Notes for John Joel BAREFOOT

In the 1910 census Joel was reported with his parents and several stepsibnlings
and a stepbrother. According to this census, Joel was as 2 yrs old in May
1910, but in the January 1920 census, he was only 11 yrs old. This would
indicate he was born Jan-May 1908.

Laurie Kurtz, a granddaughter of Jessie Barefoot Thomas shared a story with a

Barbara relayed informatIon between Laurie and this researcher and another

originally came from Laurie's mom. Laurie originally sent the information
about Joel in an email several years ago.

"John Joel had Muscular Dystrophy. They found treatment and a nice clinical

John Tipton Barefoot is reported by one or more genealogies as the son of

Jane McClane (or McClain or McLane Mobley). Their son Thomas Duncan's

requested divorce, which wa granted. She went on to marry Gilbert Spurlock
Details are provided by several genealogies. I am providing the info from the

arcane reasons, which I honor.

Nancy Barefoot's Petition 39-1825

To the Honourable the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee now in
session-The petion of Nancy Barefoot most Humbly showeth that your petitioner
intermarried with Dillon W. H. Barefoot in the year 1817.

That about six months after our marriage and before we became housekeepers, my
said husband took to rambling, and your petitioner hearing of him at Knoxville
went from her fathers house in Maury County to that place in hopes to engage
his attention and induce him to settle he promised to do so and we settled
in sequatchie valley, but he having no disposition to provide a living by
industry I soon became in a distressed situation from poverty and went and
returned to my fathers house again in Maury County.

In the course of last year I made another attempt to settle with him & try to
make our living but within a few months he determined again to ramble. I once
more returned to my father, he having declared his intention to go to South
America and join the patriots & your petitioner not having heard of him in the
course of the year, and being fully persuaded from former experience that he
has no disposition to locate himself anywhere or use any exertions to support
a wife and child, most humbly prays that your Honourable body will grant her
divorce from her said husband, and your petitioner as in duty bound will ___
pray.

We the undersigned subscribers do certify that we have been acquainted with

Laura was the second wife of Elisha Richard Grubbs. James' previous marriage
is reported in the 1910 census. From both the 1900 and the 1910 census we see
they were married about 1893. The marriage record was found in a new round of

Notes for Livie BAREFOOT

The family name appears as Barfoot in her marriage record. This form varies
with the spelling Barefoot. There are now family lines with each spelling.
We find some examples of the two spellings for one case. It is possible, even
likely, that the spelling should have been Barefoot. The variable and flighty
approach to spelling and the lack of set forms for spelling in that era would
allow that.

The transcription of the record also has her first name as Sivel, which doe
snot make sense. There is no image available and that may be a misreading and
mistranscription. In the 1850 census, the enumerator had a very clear and
consistent readable hand, and we find her name there as Livie.

1850 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 20 September, Precinct 1, page 8, Hse

Francis Dickerson 7 F b Tex [b abt 1843]
John Dickerson 1 M b Tex [b abt 1849]
William McCrow 18 M Laborer b Tex [b abt 1832]

Livie died some time before the 1860 census, when C Dickinson is reported with
children in the home matching those in the 1850 enumeration. Since the last
child was born in about 1853, we can say Livie died after that time.

The first child in 1960, named P A, appears to match Ann. The older E
Dickinson seems to be Eliza, since Elizabeth was married. the age is niot
right for the age reported for Eliza in 1850, but this is a common problem.
The initials CT don't match any child re[proted in 1950, and the age is not
helpful. Being female, CT is in the place where we would expect Frances
(spelled Francis in 11850). J W matches John and W H was born since 1850.

yrs old in Jan 1920. This would indicate he was born Jan-May 1908.

Notes for Winnie Lee BAREFOOT

Winnie's parents had both been widowed, and married in July 1907. Winnie's
brother John Joel Barefoot was born in abotu 1909, and Winnie about 1911. She
was enumerated with her again-widowed mother and three siblings in Baylor
County, Texas.

---------------
I received an email from my cousin TeLowa last night. She did not know about
the daughter Mattie Bell! She did know about the last husband [of Mattie's
mother Katie Magby]. His last name was Luttrell. He lived in Seymour, TX.
And had several children, which TeLowa believed were from a previous marriage.

TeLowa Kay was Winnie's daughter, she is an only child. She inherited the
sweet personality of the Barefoot side. We love her to pieces. TeLowa has 4
grown children with families. I will forward all of this information to her.
Another treasure trove.

Thanks. Laura

In 1920 Winnie was reported in her first census, at age 9. Her brother Harvey
was the head of the household, which included her widowed mother Katie
Barefoot and two other siblings.

T D died in 1917, widowing Katie for a second time. In 1920, she was reported
in Baylor County, Texas, in a household of her children, with her son Harvey H
Dennis reported as the head of the household. Katie is reported as Single,
rather than Widowed.
