She was not literate, and signed the document with Her Mark, after the Notary Public had filled in the details for her. (The signature of the Notary matches the writing on the form.) The application states that her husband died on 5 February 1894 and "She is 84 years of age and is very near rundown." One application is dated 15 January 1902. She filed applications in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905 and 1907. The gravestones of both William and Zenith are broken. They are in the Jerusalem Cemetery, Pickens County, Georgia. Zenith's stone seems to have misspelled her name. The legend reads "Zenisth [sic, or perhaps Zenista] Forrester Age 80 years." There is clearly an S between the I and the T, but the last letter is partially damaged. The left arm, however, is straight up like an H, not slanted like the A on the word "Age." Resolution of the photo is not sharp enough to read dates on the standing part. William's stone is also partly unreadable in the photo. The readable parts of the legend there read: "Husband of Z E Forrester W M Forrester Died Feb 5, 1894." This seems to provide Zenith's middle initial, which I have not seen elsewhere. Her daughter Thalia had a daughter name Zenith Elvira Mullins. Perhaps Elvira was Zenith Barnes Forrester's middle name.

But both Susan and Amanda appear under those names in the 1870 enumeration for this family. In 1880 Susan A is still in the household, but Mandy/Amanda is gone, probably married and in her own household. 1870 Federal Census, Prentiss County, Mississippi, 11 June, PO Booneville, Township 6 Range 7, pages 5-6 (scan 428), Hse/Fam #31 (page 5) Barnett, John 55 M W Farmer $200 real $1125 personal Georgia [born abt 1815] Barnett, Manerva 53 F W Keeping House Georgia [born abt 1817] (page 6) Barnett, Amanda 12 F W Mississippi [born abt 1858] Amanda first married Jesse A Gooch 2 November 1876, according to family sources. I have not found any record. Notes on Amanda's Find-a-Grave memorial indicates she and Jesse moved to Young County, Texas, some time before 1900. But note that in the 1880 census their first child W M (seems to be Willey in family notes provided by Jared Kirk) is reported to have been born in Texas. But the 1880 census indicates they moved to Yell County, Arkansas, in the meantime, where they are recorded in the1880 census. They are found in Love County, Chickasaw Nation and Oklahoma later. This is ian interesting pattern, since Love County, is in South Central Oklahoma (Indian Territory at that time), while Yell County, Arkansas, is in the west central area of Arkansas along the Arkansas River, considerably north and east of Love County, Indian Territory. Young County, Texas is south and wst of Love County, Oklahoma. It would be interesting to know what led them to Yell County, Arkansas, rather than going north into Indian Territory from Young County, Texas. They may have traveled diagonally through Indian Territory, or they could have stayed in US territory by going east across North Texas, then up into Arkansas. They were enumerated in the 1880 census in Yell County, Arkansas, east of Ft Smith. Amanda's name is written Mandana, like it was started with the nickname Mandy. They had been married about 5 years at that time. 1880 Federal Census, Yell County, Arkansas, 10 June, Spring Creek Township, District 231, page 16, Hse/Fam #63 Gooch, Jesse A W M 21 Farmer MS MS MS Gooch, Mandana [Amanda] W F 19 Wife Keeping House MS GA GA Gooch, W M W M 2 Son Single TX MS GA Note that the enumerator has a different state of birth for W M's mother than he has for "Mandana," apparently just copying down the same item from Amanda's mother. "Jesse and Amanda had a son named John Pearl Gooch, who was my great grandfather. An Alabama marriage record seems to be for Asa Barnett and his first wife Gracey. Some genealogies report Gracey as the first wife of Asa, marrying Asa in January 1827. But she died the next year. No ages are given, but the marriage date of January 1827 would make Gracey Urquhart about 14 years old at the time this marriage license was issued. Alabama, Select Marriages, 1816-1957 Gracy Urquhart Marriage 31 Jan 1827 Montgomery, Alabama Spouse Asa Barnett I found the original posted and discovered that the execution line had been canceled. Information had been entered, but then struck out. It appears this marriage license never was executed, so Asa and Gracey never were married. At any rate there were no children from the marriage. Details are not clear otherwise. One of several seemingly knowledgeable trees provides extensive information on Asa and Elizabeth and full names for their children, though some events are not documented, one being the marriage of Asa and Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the URL of this tree was not captured. At least one other genealogy reports James as born in 1770, and identifies James' father as a John Barnett married to Ann Pratt. The dates of birth vary among the various genealogies. John's father is identified as William, who was born in Londonderry, Ireland. The latter is the line of Susan Barnett, who married Jacob Green, son of Toliver Green. Jacob's brother Jackson married Clarinda Barnett, but her lineage derives from an English-French line settled early in Virginia, unrelated to Susan Barnett Green's Barnetts. In the 1850 census, Elizabeth is reported 17 years older than Asa, but in 1860 her age is 10 years younger. Also Elizabeth's birth place is reported as South Carolina in 1850, but Alabama in 1860, though Asa's state is South Caorlina both times. 1850 Federal Census, Pike County, Alabama, 11 June (?), page (scan 407), Hse/Fam #902 Asa Barnett 41 M Farmer $900 Real Estate b SC Elizabeth Barnett 57 F b SC Colonel W Barnett 15 M b Alabama Frances Barnett 9 F b Alabama Eugenia Barnett 7 F b Alabama Josephine Barnett 4 F b Alabama J McCaleb [or J W Caleb] Wiley 1 M b Alabama The last child is reported as Willy in 1860. 1860 Federal Census, Pike County, Alabama, 16 August, Western Division, PO Brier Hill, page 134, Hse/Fam #905 Asa Barnett 56 M Farmer $3500 Real Estate $8000 Personal born SC [b abt 1804] Elizabeth Barnett 46 F born Alabama [b abt 1814] Colonel W Barnett 25 M Clerk born Alabama [b abt 1835] Eugenia A Barnett 17 F born Alabama [b abt 1843] Josephine Barnett 14 F born Alabama [b abt 1846] Willy Barnett 11 M born Alabama [b abt 1849] Boyd Barnett 9 M born Alabama [b abt 1851] Victoria Barnett 5 F born Alabama [b abt 1855] Infant Barnett 1 F born Alabama [b abt 1859]

One discrepancy occurs, which is similar to common errors in censuses. The birth state of Clarinda in the 1860 census with the Barnett family reports her birth state to be Tennessee. In later censuses information for her sons Taylor (James Taylor) and Joe (Toliver Jorile) report the birth state of their mother Clarinda as Illinois. In 1910 Taylor's mother's birth state is reported as Unknown In 1920 it is Illinois In 1910 Joe's mother (should be the same as Taylor's) is reported as born in Alabama. In 1920 it is Illinois. From the 1860 Illinois census, we know the family had Illinois connections and one group of children of the name Gibson are with the Barnett family in that census. So Clarinda came to Texas from Illinois. We can cut the census enumerator some slack for confusing the birth place. It was in Illinois that Clarinda's father married his third wife, Sarah Morgan. We must keep in mind that in that era objective details and a focus on information were not a part of the culture as it became in the course of the 20th century. We are detail oriented now. We like closure on every possible item of information. That was just not the way they lived back then. Clarinda the daughter of Jorile (Jorial) was reported in the 1860 census as born in Tennessee. But Jorile had moved to Illinois between 1852 and 1857, when he married Sarah Morgan Gibson, a widow living in Washington County, Illinois. We find their blended family in the 1860 census, where all the Gibson children are reported born in Illinois, while the older Barnett children were born in North Carolina and Clarinda and her sister Susan were born in Tennessee. It is easy to see from this information why Clarinda's birth state might have been reported as Illinois in the later censuses. Stranger discrepancies have certainly been sprinkled all through the US census records. Her children remembered that she had come from Illinois, and that would be reinforced by the fact that her stepmother Sarah was born in Illinois. But sometimes they remembered a family past farther back, even though Joe got it wrong in 1910 by saying it was Alabama instead of Tennessee.
