In many genealogies, there is a serious discrepancy between the reported birth dates of John H Barnett and his son John B Barnett. Some genealogies report John B's father as John Henry Barnett. John Henry Barnett's birth date reported on his grave as 14 August 1813 is impossible given the details we know about John B Barnett's life. Censuses report ages making his birth about 1822-1824, except 1870, which makes it about 1815. The report of John B's participation in the Seminolian Wars (in about 1836) also makes it unlikely he was born much later than about 1820. It makes me think the wrong grave has been referenced, for another John Henry Barnett, instead of the John H Barnett who was the father of John B Barnett who married Minerva Owens. From the names of the children in the household of John H and Mary E Barnett in 1850 and later, it appears to me that their son John is John Wesley, not John B Barnett. In the 1850 census, the son named John is named John W, matching John Wesley Barnett, son of John Henry Barnett. Further, John W is only 1 years old in the 1850 census, making him born about 1849, while John B Barnett had to be born in 1920 or earlier to participate in the Seminole Wars, and he was married in 1841. The 1870 census also has the son as John W, age 17. Because they both lived in Mississippi, the Barnett family of John Henry and Mary E Hudson are probably related to the Barnetts of John B and his father John H at some point back in the generations, but I have not yet found the link. They are both possibly connected in some was to the line of Joseph Royall Barnett of Virginia, descended form a European line originally named Barnard, whose name was change to Barnett in the colonies. As of May 2014, I have not been able to determine a link between these three Barnett lines. It appears several genealogies have mixed two families, copying each other, mixing John H, father of John B Barnett, with John Henry, who appears to be the father of one John Westly/Wesley Barnett, born about 1849, according to the 1850 and 1860 census.. One early genealogy I found that had John Henry Barnett and an unknown wife in Mississippi as the parents of John B Barnett, has the unworkable dates of birth. This family was hard to reconstruct. One of the problems was the variety of first names of the husband/father of this Barnett family. Some sources seemed to have the name Josiah, but most had Joriah or Josial, or some other odd forms like Josill, which turned out to be one of the common mis-transcriptions we find on Ancestry.com. Josial and Joriah were likewise errors or misreadings of the census listings for Jorial. Some listed him in genealogies or records as Jorial. The 1860 Illinois census and his record of marriage to Sarah Morgan Gibson spell his name as Jorial. The 1870 census spells it Jorile. Once I saw the 1870 census in actual handwriting, this name made sense to me. His name is the same as the middle name of his grandson, the son of Clarinda Barnett and Jackson Green, my great-grandfather. We have good records in our family on this name. Great Grandpa Green's full name is Toliver Jorile. The first name of Clarinda Barnett's father in the 1870 census looks exactly like this Jorile. It is so unusual, it is no wonder so many had trouble figuring it out. The name is confirmed in the family naming patterns. Toliver is the name of Jackson's father, Toliver Green. So Toliver Jorile was named after both his grandfathers Toliver Green and Jorile Barnett! This makes sense of the name of Clarinda Barnett's father. It also explains the sometime spelling of the name as Jorial, which is another spelling for the same phonetic name. In searching with this more detailed Barnett information, I also found that there was another line of Barnetts, many of whom came to Texas from Alabama. Their ancestors were also from South Carolina, and have many similar names in their line. These Barnetts appeared to stem from a common ancestor. The genealogy of the Virginia-Carolina-Alabama Barnetts does not report all the lines from the Virginia and South Carolina individuals. Some details are missing on several of those who are reported. Dates of birth also vary among the few genealogies reporting on this line of Barnetts. A striking feature of these Carolina-Alabama Barnetts is the name Jorial which continues in various forms throughout the generations. This also gave insight into the origin of the name Jorial. Forms of the name in this line appear as Jorial, Joroyall or Rial. The variation Joroyall gives some clue into the linguistic origin of the unique name. Variations of this name will be found for individuals with the name. A Joseph Barnett, born in 1731 in Goochland County, Virginia (just west of Richmond), had a son named Joseph Royall. I found that Joseph Royall's nickname was Joroyall. One of Joseph Royall Barnett's sons, Micajah Cicero, named one of his sons Joroyall. Another genealogy reports that this Joroyall's name was also spelled as Jorial. Joseph Royall's son John also had a son whose name he spelled Joroyl. Another son, Richard, named one of his sons Jorial. Richard's son Joseph named one of his sons Rial. Rial named one of his sons Rial T. When I saw these variations it gave me a clinching insight to the name forms, and the origin of the name Jorile/Jorial. The pronunciation represented by these spellings indicates a vowel change between English dialects that is documented today. It is well-known that in Northern Ireland, the OI/OY diphthong is pronounced as a standard English "long I" as in right or sight. Thus the normal word spelled ROYAL would be pronounced RILE! This is exactly the phonetic change we see in this line of Barnetts to give us the name sequence JosephRoyall-Joroyall-Jorial/Jorile. The strongest confirming evidence of that is that Joroyall's name is also spelled Jorial. The short form Rial automatically follows as a nickname or variation of the new name Jorial/Jorile. The spelling Jorile is used for the name in our line of Barnett-Greens. These Alabama Barnetts wound up in Kaufman and Cherokee Counties of Texas, or nearby Texas counties. Jorile and Sarah's final residence was in Hill County, Texas, a little west of Kaufman County. Their daughter Clarinda married Jackson Green in Hill County before moving to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Rial T Barnett in our Alabama line was born in Kaufman County 1871. He moved from Kaufman County, Texas, to Maricopa County (Phoenix), Arizona, where he died in 1940. The accumulated body of facts indicates that Jorile Barnett, who was born in South Carolina, married in North or South Carolina, lived in Tennessee and later in Illinois, and finally moved with his third wife to Texas, is a cousin descended from one of the earlier generations in this same Barnett line, with the early name Royall handed down in various phonetic forms. Jorile/Jorial Barnett is reported in several sources as Jorial R Barnett. The middle initial R probably stands for the proper second name Royall in the full name Joseph Royall, as we find for many individuals int his lineage, for which Jorial/Jorile was originally a nickname. It is the proper middle name for the grandson Toliver Jorile Green. I have found that the Barnetts were one of several prominent families in Goochland County, Virginia, and all these families have the name Royall, Joroyal, Joroyl or variations, deriving from a family name Royall. The Royalls were related to the Farrars, Barnetts, Bowmans and some other families in Goochland, all of which use the name Royall as a given name in their lineage from this Royall family. The Barnetts of Virginia appear to derive from an ancestor who was originally named Bernard. I have reconstructed the Bernard line back to the Norman Fitzbernard nobles in 1145. There are indications going farther back, but I have not felt as confident of reports earlier than 1145. Jacob Green's wife Susan Barnett was not Clarinda's sister, as I had originally surmised from the fact that Clarinda had a sister named Susan. But Susan's father was John B Barnett from Alabama, and seems to be kin to the line of Barnetts originally from Virginia with many branches in Alabama, which I discuss above. I have not found the direct connection of John B Barnett's line to Jorial's line of Barnetts (as of December 2013). But there are many signs that the lines are related. See entry and Notes for Susan A Barnett. I found a listing for what appears to be this Jorile/Jorial Barnett in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in the 1830 census. 1830 Federal Census, Spartanburg County, South Carolina Jorial Barnet Head of household Males 1 under 5 years, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 20-30 Females 1 x 20-30 There are two males in the age range of 20-30 years. It appears one of Jorial's brothers is staying in his household. We find Jorile and his first wife with their family in Cherokee County, North Carolina in the 1840 census, initially transcribed for me by Nadene Snyder. 1840 Federal Census, Cherokee County, North Carolina, page 236 Joriael Barnet Males 1 under 5 (William?), 3 between 5-10 (James, John, Thomas), 1 30-40 (Jorile/Jorial) Females 1 under 5 (Evaline), 1 5-10 (??); 1 10-15 (Nancy), and 1 30-40 (1st wife) There is an additional female child here in 1840, aged between 5 and 10, whom we do not see later. This is probably a child who died before the 1850 census. In 1848, Jorile married Nancy Powell, after the death of his first wife. His name in this record is written by the clerk as Josiah. Later information indicated that this Nancy was actually Jorile's second wife Nancy Powell. Nadene Snyder had found church records indicating that Jorial and his apparent wife named Nancy had joined a newly organized church on 8 June 1844. The records of Hanging Dog Baptist Church in Cherokee County, North Carolina, report that Jorial and Nancy Barnett joined that congregation on 8 June 1844. The church had been organized only in May of that year. Minutes through 1847 show Jorile (Jorial) chosen as a deacon (August 1844), then church clerk (April 1845), then ordained as an elder (April 1846). The day after Nadene sent me that information, (in June 2008) I found information on a genealogy discussion list giving several helpful details about Jorial (Jorile) Barnett. Barbara Stevens informs us that Jorial married his second wife Nancy Powell in 1848. This indicates that the Nancy who joined the church with Jorial in 1844 was his first wife. Thus both his first and his second wife were named Nancy. Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002, page 78, entry 226 Josiah [Jorial/Jorile] Barnett, Spouse Nancy Powell, Marriage 27 Oct 1848 Monroe County, Tennessee -- http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1169&enc=1 The date given is the date the license was issued, but the date of the actual ceremony was not entered later as usual. In seeing the name Nancy Powell, I realized that her name had also appeared in the membership records of the Hanging Dog Baptist Church. Nancy had joined the same congregation on 9 November 1844. I have not yet found the death and burial information of the first Nancy Barnett, but this combination of facts indicates that she died there in Cherokee County, North Carolina, in the community near Hanging Dog Baptist Church. Her name does not occur in the partial transcription of cemetery burial records of that church. Nancy Powell Barnett, according to the 1850 census, was born in South Carolina. Note that all Jorile's children with his first wife were born in North Carolina. It is helpful to note that Monroe County, Tennessee, borders Cherokee County, North Carolina, so they were just a few miles from where he had lived before, and still near the Hanging Dog Baptist Church. However, I do not find any reference to Jorile or Nancy Powell Barnett after 1846. Note in the 1850 census the spelling of Frances is the female spelling. In 1860, Frances is reported as Female, but in later censuses the name is spelled Francis and this person is reported as Male, including the 1880 census showing F M Barrett as the husband of a family living next door to his father J R Barrett in Hill County, Texas. The spelling of Jorile's name as Jariel probably indicates that the name was pronounced as Juh-RILE. This follows the accent of the name Joroyall, a combined form from Joseph Royall. The descendants of his grandson Toliver Jorile Green pronounced the name as JOE-rile. In 1850, another Barnett lived 5 houses down from Jorile and was enumerated on the same page. 1850 Federal Census, Monroe County, Tennessee, 12 November, 14th Civil District, page 229 (scan 115), Hse/Fam #1608 Michael Barnett 21 M Farmer $No Real Estate b Tenn Melissa Barnett 20 F b Tenn William Barnett 1 M b Tenn A Harding family genealogy tells us he was the son of Thomas Barnett. His and Melissa's marriage records spells his name Michial. This may indicate his name was pronounced MITCH-ee-ul, rather than Mitchell or Michael. But most family trees spell his name as Mitchell. Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002 Michial Barnett Spouse: Malissa Mcnutt Marriage 3 Apr 1848 Monroe County, Tennessee The Thomas Barnett reported as Mitchael's father in the Harding genealogy is a Barnett I did not previously have in my tree. The Harding tree had no parents for Thomas. It seems likely that this Thomas is from the same lineage as Jorile and the other Barnetts in neighboring counties of North Carolina and northern South Carolina. Thomas' wife was Elizabeth Davis, whose father is from Virginia like the Barnetts and related families. Mitchael and Melissa's son William also moved west and settled in Oklahoma. When she died, Elizabeth was living in Fannin County, Texas, which borders Oklahoma on the Red River. Barnetts in Jorile's lineage live all across north Texas. The 1950 entry for Mitchael and Melissa appears to be a duplicate of the same family enumerated nearby across the county line in Polk County under the names Mitchell and Malissa, with Wm R, age 1. Nearby are his parents Thomas and Elizabeth, and other members of that Barnett family. From 1860 Thomas and Elizabeth and other members of their family are enumerated in Monroe County. Some time after the death of his second wife Nancy Powell in Tennessee, Jorile moved his family to Illinois. He was there by some time for the 1855 state census. 1855 Illinois State Census, Washington County, 3 Jul 1855 Jorial Barnett 1 male under 10 years, 2 males 10-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50 3 females under 10 years, 1 female 10-20, 1 female 20-30 Nearby is another Barnett household. Illinois Marriage Index, Book 2, Page 16 Barnett, Jorial -- Gipson, Sarah 1/15/1857, Jefferson County, Illinois We find Jorial enumerated with his third wife Sarah in Washington County, Illinois in June 1860. 1860 Federal Census, Washington County, Illinois, 22 June, Ashley, page 42, Hse # 298, Fam # 270 Jorial Barnett 52 M Farmer $600 Real $200 Personal South Carolina Sarah Barnett 38 F Missouri Frances Barnett 19 F North Carolina Isabella Barnett 17 F North Carolina Z Taylor Barnett 12 F North Carolina Clarinda Barnett 9 F Tennessee Susan J Barnett 8 F Tennessee Jane Gibson 13 F Illinois Arminda Gibson 9 F Illinois John Gibson 8 M Illinois In June 2008, I got more information explaining these Gibson children. Nadene Snyder, another Barnett researcher, contacted me with information on this Illinois family, indicating that the Gibson children are Sarah's children from a previous marriage to Charles S Gibson of Washington County, Illinois. This, then, would also mean that Sarah is not the mother of these Barnett children. The ages of the Gibson children run concurrently with the Barnetts, and John Gibson is the same age as Susan J Barnett. Nadene had identified additional census information that added or confirmed information on this family. In the 1850 census, 42-year-old Jerial (Jorile) is already a widower. In the 1840 census, which did not give names other than the head of the household, there is a female of the same age range as Jorile. Nadene had also located the marriage information for Sarah Morgan and Jorial Barnett in the Illinois Marriage Index. Sarah Morgan had married Charles S Gibson on 26 January 1841 in Washington County, Illinois. The index tells us that Sarah Gipson married Jorial Barnett on 15 January 1857 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Thus Jorile's first wife, whose maiden name we do not know, died before he married Nancy Powell in October 1848. Sarah Morgan's husband Charles Gibson died some time before January 1857 when she and Jorile married. Sarah and Jorial were not married until 1857, so Sarah is not the mother of Clarinda or Susan Barnett, having had her last child John Gibson in Illinois in 1852, the same approximate time as the birth of Susan Barnett in Tennessee. The mother of Clarinda and Susan, as well as Zachary, is Nancy Powell, Jorile's second wife. This means Nancy died sometime in late 1852 or later, after the birth of Susan. Jorile probably moved to Illinois after Nancy died, but I have not found her death or burial information in North Carolina or Tennessee. In the 1860 census, there are two children, Clarinda and Susan, who were born after the 1850 census, Clarinda in 1851 and Susan in about 1852. But Jorile and Sarah married in January 1857. This means that Jorile had a second wife after Zachary's mother died and before he married Sarah Morgan. Jorile and his family were living on the North Carolina side of the state border, in Cherokee County, when Zachary was born in November 1850. Jorile had moved across the line to the neighboring Monroe County in Tennessee sometime before the 1850 census. He married there and his next two children Clarinda and Susan were born there in 1851-1852. This would mean their mother died in Tennessee sometime after Susan's birth in 1852 and before Jorile's marriage to Sarah Morgan Gibson in January 1857. From there it is easy to envision them as part of the continuing stream of families moving west. Jorile first took his motherless children to Illinois, where he met and married Sarah, then at some time after 1860 they moved on with their blended family to Hill County, Texas. 1870 Federal Census, Hill County, Texas, 23 August, PO Hillsboro, page 39, Hse/Fam # 265 Barnet, Jorile 62 M W Farmer No Real Estate value $150 Personal South Carolina Barnet, Sarah 49 F W Missouri Barnet, Clarinda 19 F W Tennessee Barnet, Susan J 17 F W Tennessee Barnet, John [John Gibson] 16 M W Illinois [b abt 1854] The fact that John is reported as John Barnett rather than John Gibson might indicate that Jorile had legally adopted him. We see that Jorile's son Francis (Frank) and his wife Nancy Jane (Gibson) also moved to Texas with Jorile and Sarah. They are living a few houses from Jorile and Sarah, and are enumerated on the page before them. The ages of their two daughters indicate that the Barnetts moved to Texas about 1867. Fran and Nancy Jane's first daughter Sarah was born in Illinois in about 1846-7, and the second Maude was born in Texas about 1868. 1870 Federal Census, Hill County, Texas, 23 August, PO Hillsboro, page 38, Hse/Fam #259 Barnet, Francis 25 M W Farmer $100 Real Estate born Alabama Barnet, Nancy 23 F W born Illinois Barnet, Sarah 3 F W born Illinois Barnet, Maude 2 F W born Texas Nadene Snyder shared with me the entry she had found for Jorile and Sarah in Hill County in the 1880 census, along with other censuses. An anonymous Ancestry.com genealogy gives information on her marriage to Joshua B Pugh, born in St Clair County, on 22 May 1856. They are recorded in the 1850 census for Washington County, Illinois, living a few houses down from Jorile and Sarah. This entry of their daughter Ella in her grandmother's household probably indicates that her parents had both passed away at that time. Various genealogies had different children with various genealogies having some of the same children. Estimated birth dates for the same or similar children varied considerably, making it difficult to know if they were speaking of the same individuals or different children with similar names. Finally one of these had our Jorile with the same wives and children, with a birth year of 1802, and reporting his death in Hill County, Texas. This last detail was a definite confirming factor that they were referring to the same Jorial Barnett as ours, though the reported birth year was a bit different. No other family of this Barnett line in genealogies I had previously seen reported a Jorial that would match ours, and none reported any members moving to Hill County, only Kaufman or Cherokee County, Texas. One question arose when I found Micajah C Barnett's will. Several children are mentioned, including some who had died, whose children (Micajah's grandchildren) are mentioned in the will. Why is Joroyal/Jorile not mentioned? It may be that he had moved away from the homestead area. There is a small chance that we have not properly placed Jorile Barnett as the son of Micajah C Barnett Sr. But the other known facts support this relationship. But in Micajah's will a son named Joseph is referred to. Since we know that Jorile/Jorial/Joroyall and other variations found in Jorile's and various other Barnett's names, Jorial stands for Joseph Royall. Joseph seems to refer to Jorial/Jorile. _____________ 8th All the remaining part of my estate real and personal to be equally divided between my beloved children Jessey Barnett, Elijah Barnett, Joseph Barnett, and Mikajah Barnett and Gency [Genny?] Corder and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my beloved sons Jessy Barnett and Javan Barnett Executors of this my Last Will and testament -- Will of Micajah Barnett Sr, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8180737/story/c4359186-7de9-43b4-934a-77a9c2cbae2d?ftm=1 ______________ Nothing is known about Jorile's death and burial. DEDICATION OF HEADSTONES AT BARNETT CEREMONY On the afternoon of Aug 2nd, 1997, a number of the descendants of Micajah and Joroyal gathered together at the Barnett Cemetery in Camp Croft to dedicate these stones; this followed the annual Reunion of those descendants at Quincy`s on Reidville Road, near Spartanburg. At the dedication service, a memorial to these two ancestors was delivered by Rev. Joel H. Fisher, husband of Lorene B. Fisher. The following is a copy of his remarks (with minimum editing): We are gathered here today, to honor the memory of two of our ancestors: Rev. Joroyal Barnett, born Oct 10 1758 in Virginia, died June 6, 1812 in South Carolina, and Rev. Micajah C. Barnett, Sr., born May 13, 1760, also in Virginia, and died on January 9, 1837, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. These two brothers were sons of a Spartanburg County pioneer family, that of Joseph Barnett (born 1731, died 1802) and Lucy Wade Barnett, from Goochland Co. Virginia. We are standing in Joseph & Lucy Barnett family cemetery for this ceremony. I`d like to say a few words remembering and honoring Rev. Joroyal Barnett. He married Agnes (we believe she was a Glenn), who was born about 1757-60, in Virginia, and died in 1852, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, well into her 90`s. They had 11 Children. Joroyal was a charter member of Cedar Springs Baptist Church. He held these offices there: Association Messenger, Church Clerk, Ordained Elder, Deacon, and Ordained Minister. He was their beloved minister when he died in 1812 of a colic disorder. Historian John R. Logan said of him, quote (Elder Joroyal Barnett was a member of the Cedar Springs Baptist church and was one of the pioneer ministers of the Broad River Association. In 1811, he was chosen Moderator of the body which is evidence of his high and respectable standing in the Association of that day and time) On 22 March 1812, Elias Stone, Ordinary of Spartanburg District, South Carolina, certified that he had publicly read the citation to Administer on the Estate of the Rev`d Joroyal Barnett, deceased. He read that at a meeting of the Methodist denomination in about a mile of the house of the deceased on the 22nd of March 1812. (Estate file #432). We assume this was at Antioch Methodist church. I suppose Elias Stone was a Methodist and that is why the citation wasn`t read at Cedar Springs, and the Methodist Church was only 1 mile from Joroyal`s residence. Old Cedar Springs Baptist was about two miles from his house. We can only speculate. We do not know positively if Joroyal is buried here, but we are pretty safe in assuming that he is. His father died 10 years prior to Joroyal and he is buried here and his stone survives. Joroyal`s military service came before his ministry. I chose to mention it last. I ordered a copy of Joroyal's Revolutionary War service record-three pages arrived with very little data. He served in Roebuck`s Regiment in the militia (since the fall of Charleston) and was paid on June 30, 1786. We regret we do not know any particulars of his service. Bobby G. Moss records him in his Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution. His account # is AA297. Joroyal died 185 years ago. He lived only 53 and 3/4 years. His descendants number in the thousands. He has left us a legacy well worth emulation. One researcher has suggested that the first name here should be Katie, but the initial letter is clearly an S and the writing is clear. The name written here is clearly Sattie. Besides, the middle initial C would be for for Catherine or Katherine, for which Katie is the nickname. Could the enumerator have misheard Cindy, a short form of Lucinda? 1870 Federal Census, Prentiss County, Mississippi, 14 June, PO Booneville, p 4, Hse/Fam #22 Rogers, Benjamin F 25 M W Farmer $0 Real Estate Value $250 Personal b MS [born abt 1845] Rogers, Sattie C 21 F W Keeping House b AL [born abt 1849] Rogers, Lora 1 F W b NC [born abt 1869] Rogers, Mattie E 6mos F W b NC [born Jan 1870] 1880 Federal Census, Prentiss County, Mississippi, 14 June, District 3, Enumerator District 172, page 14, Hse #124, Fam #131 Rogers, B F W M 36 Farmer MS Tenn NC Rogers, Lucinda W F 32 Wife Keeping House MS GA SC Rogers, Lora W F 11 Dau Single Cannot write MS MS MS -- page 15 -- Rogers, Mitte W F 10 Dau Single At Home Cannot write MS MS MS Rogers, Earnest P W M 7 Son MS MS MS Rogers, America C W F 3 Dau MS MS MS Rogers, Addie U W F 6mo b Dec Dau MS MS MS The daughter America C is documented as Americus Centennial on her grave near her mother in Dibble, Oklahoma Cemtery. 1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 30 June, Township 6, District 157, page 6A, Hse #95, Fam #100 Rogers, Benjamin F Head W M Dec 1842 57 Married 32 yrs MS TN NC Farmer Rents Rogers, Kati Wife W F Dec 1847 52 Married 32 yrs 10 child/7 living MS GA GA Rogers, William M Son W M Mar 1882 18 Single MS MS MS Farm Laborer Rogers, Mary D Dau W F Dec 1888 11 MS MS MS "Susan's sister, Lucinda Catherine Rogers is said to have died at "Criner Creek" and there is a "Criner Road" south of Hwy 19, between Dibble and Purcell. HATTON wife of Frederick Hatton who departed this life July __th 1840 Aged ___ years 1 month & 5 days Dr.Thomas H. Robinson's Historical Sketch Of Old Hanover Presbyterian Church....., 1878, says she was born 2 Jun 1795 and died 7 Jul 1840. At this time, the gravestone looks like it says aged 55 years (33 or 35) maybe, but not 45. Robinson based the birth date on the age at death, but I believe he made a mistake. This F.A.G. program won't let me erase the birthdate so I had to change it instead, so I chose 1785 if aged 55 years. JSerio gave me her maiden name and parents. There is an entry and a writover in the designation for both Son-Daughter and Male-Female. The problem is, it is difficult to tell which was original and which is the writeover correction. When I saw Beaufort designated as a daughter I thought this strange, since that is a boy's name. It appears to be corrected now with the designation of Buford as the son. Further documentation will help us determine if the name of this son was Buford or Beaufort. But the confirming evidence goes the other direction, when in 1930 we see Beaufort Wallace in the household designated as a daughter, divorced, with a child. Thus Beaufort appears to be the correct form of the name, and the 1900 census entry corrected to read Daughter and Female, is the correct 1900 reading. 1930 Federal Census, Armstrong County, Texas, 10 April, Justice Precinct 3, District 4, page 4B, Hse #71, Fam #75 Black, Sam H Head Owns M W 70 Married at 20 TX TN TX Wheat Farm Operator Black, Mollie E Wife F W 68 Married at 18 MS GA SC Wallace, Beaufort Dau F W 34 Divorced Married at 22 TX TX MS Wallace, Wayne Grandson M W 7 TX TX TX A photo and some details were provided by one genealogy.
