In the 1860 census Susan is in her father's household with her stepmother Sarah
Morgan Gibson.

Sarah Gipson married Jorial Barnett on 15 January 1857 in Jefferson County,
Illinois. The mother of Clarinda and Susan, as well as their brother Zachary,
is Nancy Powell, Jorile's second wife. This means Nancy died sometime in late
1852 or later, after the birth of Susan. Jorile and his family became part of
the continuing stream of families moving west. Jorile first took his
motherless children to Illinois, where he met and married Sarah, then at some
time after 1860 they moved on with their blended family to Hill County, Texas.

A couple of genealogies with no sourcing information appear to represent
family information in Susannah's date of birth and, as I did, uses the date of
her father's will as a reference for her death prior to that date.

Several genealogies have death information of 31 Dec 1826 in State Park,
Richland, South Carolina. None of them have any note or explanation. Is this
a town name? A township? Was she visiting a state park when she died? There
is no official place named State Park, South Carolina. There is no state park
listed in Richland County. There is a National Park, Congaree National Park.

Notes for T John BARNETT

The various records and genealogy trees present confused evidence about the
place of birth, marriage and death. It is presented variously as St James
Santee Parish in Charleston County, church and parish area of the same name in
Berkley County, or St James Town, which is in Orangeburg County, South
Carolina. The RootsWeb Marriage Index says it was Santee County, South
Carolina, and I cannot find any information indicating there was ever a county
in the state by that name. Santee is a River so many locales may have been
called after the name of the River.

Several Ancestry.com transcription collections present the location as St
James, Santee Parish, as though it was a town or location named St James
within a Parish (town? church?) area of Santee in one county or another, but
with no county name. I cannot find anything definitive to resolve this, but
am following the designation that seems most consistent and most likely from
the searches I have done, from genealogies that report the location to be St
James Santee Parish (church area, location) in Clarendon County, Virginia.

Notes for Thomas BARNETT

In the first US census reporting the names of every member of the household,
Thomas Barnett is in the home of his father Jorile (Jorial) and stepmother
Nancy (Powell) Barnett in Monroe County, Tennessee, adjacent to Cherokee
County, North Carolina, where he and his siblings were born.

1850 Federal Census, Monroe County, Tennessee, 12 November, 14th Civil
District, page 229 (scan 115), Hse/Fam #1608
Jariel [Jorial] Barnett 42 M Farmer $600 Real Estate. $200 Personal b SC
Nancy Barnett 25 F b SC
-- page 230 --
Thomas Barnett 15 M b NC

In 1860 we find Thomas has moved to Washington County, Illinois, with his
father and siblings, but is not in his father's household, having married and
established his own household with Mary E Morgan. He married Mary in December
1858, about a year after his father Jorile married Sarah Morgan Gibson. It
appears that Mary Morgan is the daughter of one of Sarah's brothers, William J
Morgan.

One discrepancy occurs, in that the marriage certificate gives the name Mary
E, while Sarah Morgan's niece is named Mary J Morgan in the Morgan genealogy.
Middle initials vary widely in the records of that period. Assuming the
identity of these two entries on the basis of all the other supporting family
information, I have entered the relevant information from an anonymous
genelaogy in Ancestry World Tree that has good details about the Morgan
family, including Mary J Morgan, but lacks Mary's husband.

Illinois Marriage Index, Book B, Entry 58
Barnett, Thomas - Morgan, Mary E 01/14/1858 Washington County

Some present a Civil War service record as Thomas. The name was Thomas R
Barnett. This Thomas is from Washington County, Illinois, where our Thomas
lived, but the birthplace of Thomas R Barnett was Pennsylvania, while Thomas
Barnett, son of Jorile, was born in North Carolina.

-- http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2845213&id=I740&ftm=1

The genealogy gives no death date for Mary J Morgan. The compiler proposes
two possble marriages, neither of them being to Thomas Barnett. Evidence is
strong that this Mary Barnett is the one recorded in the Illinois Marriage
Index as Mary E Morgan, the bride of our Thomas Barnett. From all the good
information, including census records, wills and other documentation and
family information, I would think the initials and other details of the
genealogy are from Morgan family information. I am reporting Mary's name on
that basis as Mary J Morgan.

The dates and relationships reported from the spotty records are not easily
reconciled. John Barnette died before 1910 and was survived by his wife
Margaret, who moved into William's home, and died before 1920. But Emily
Foster Barnett Beach lived until 1938, surviving her husband William Beach,
who died in 1930. William B Barnett is reported in Emily's obituary as one of
the sons surviving her.

William's death certificate reports that his father was John Barnett and his
mother was Caroline Foster. His obituary mentions among survivors a
half-sister who is reported as a daughter of Emily Caroline Foster in the
latter's obituary. His obituary also mentions two half-brothers named Beach,
and another Beach sister. In Emily's obituary, William is the only Barnett
child listed among her children.

Several genealogies report William Beach as Emily Caroline's only husband.
Genealogies list a large number of Beach children, ranging in birth dates from
1880 to 1895 (three with unreported birth dates). SOme genealogies have the
firsT Beach child as Edward born in 1879. So Emily and William Beach probably
married about 1878. Tthey were still married when he died in 1930, at least
from the unconnected records we have. Her age at marriage would be about age
17 or 18, a more common age of marriage.

Was Emily married to John Barnett before he married Margaret and then John and
Emily divorced? Maybe, but that was quite unusual for that era. Another
possibility also stretches credulity. William Barnett was born in 1872. And
Emily was born about 1856, To be William's birth mother, she would have had
to have William when she was bout 16, and married at about age 15. That is
possible, but how likely?

A genealogy has some details to fill in WIlliam's famliy, but interestingly,
has no information on his parents. Thsi clarifies his middle name. But look
at the birth date. Ths cannot be right, since he is enumerated in the 1970
census as 1 year old. Also this is a different William Barnett, because he
was born in Greenville, while our William wasborn in Spartanburg, like his
parents. So this middle name maybe wrong for our William after all.

Notes for Zachary Taylor BARNETT

Note that even though Zach was reported as only 9 months old in November 1850,
in 1860 he is reported as 12 years old. Even better, in the 1900 census he is
reported as 60 years old, making him born in18409, not 1850. The 1900 census
reports his birthday as Dec 1840.

Several records under the name of Taylor Barnett appear to refer to Zachary
Taylor Barnett.

Some report him as a Civil War veteran. He could have served but would have
been only about 13 or 14. The record indicates he was in a Tennessee regiment
for the USA. I have not found any Civil War record for his father Jorial
Barnett. But Zach's induction into service in the USA army in Tennessee in
November 1864 seems odd, since the Barnetts were enumerated in Illinois in
1860. This might be a different Taylor Barnett. But the connection with
Tennessee fits. If this is the same person, Zachary would have traveled back
to Tennessee to enlist, rather than enlisting in an Illinois Regiment, seems a
little strange.

The Taylor Barnett who served in the Tennessee Union Mounted Infantry moved to
Oregon where he died. The information on his wife matches Zachary Taylor
Barnett's wife, Sarah. Civil War pension records report her as Sarah A J
Barnett, widow of Taylor Barnett.

The 7th Tennessee Mounted Infantry was a Union regiment organized in Tennessee
late int eh war.

The Z T (Zachary Taylor) Barnett in this mariage report seems to be the same
perosn as Taylor Barnett who married Sara Nicols (Duckett), and is so reproted
by numeros genealogies. Public records correlate well. He and Sarah were
married in Hill Countym, Texas, wher his grandfather Jorile Barnett was
enumerated in 1870. (I have not found Jorile in 1880) However, it is odd
that they were married in Texas then appear in 1880 back in the county where
Taylor was born, Monroe County, Tennessee.

Sarah's related funeral card has her name as Sarah H Barnett. This card gives
us further information that might indicate this Sarah and Taylor are a
different couple from our Zachary Taylor Barnett and Sarah Nichols. Sarah's
funeral card reports more family information including Sarah's parents' names.
Her father is reported as John A Duckett, whereas the name of Zachary Taylor
Barnett's wife was reported on their marriage record as Sarah Nichols. The
name Nichols might have been a previous married name, accounting for the name
difference.

Sarah's name on the Funeral Card is Sarah H Barnett, while her grave and the
memorial on Find a Grave, as well as the photo of her gravestone, have her
name as Sarah A Barnett, matching the Civil War pension record name of Sarah A
J Barnett.. In the 1900 census she was Sarah Ann. I have found nothing
further on the additonal initial J.

Margaret is reported in this census as William's mother, and this is also
reported in one or two genealogies. But several documents and records,
including his death certificate, report that his mother was Emily Foster.

The date of marriage for John Barnett and Emily Caroline Foster is uncertain.
She is reported as the mother of William B Barnett (Barnette), but married
William Beach in 1877 or 1878. Hers and William's obits and several Beach
children obits, as well as William's death certificate, all support William B
Barnett as her only Barnett son.

William B Barnett was born in 1872. And Emily Foster was born about 1856. To
be William's birth mother, Emily had to have had William when she was about
16, and married at about age 15, which could be possible. She married William
Beach in 1880 & lived till 1938. No marriage for Margaret and John has been
found.

In the 1910 census John's wife Margaret was reported as a widow, living in the
house of William B Barnett and his family. She was reported as the Mother of
William. It appears from all the evidence that this should have said
stepmother.

No death record has been found for Margaret, nor her maiden name. She is not
found in the 1920 census.
