David Beam was born in Geneva, Switzerland. His grandfather was born in Hamburg, Germany. Michael's son John Teeter Beam, also born in Hamburg, moved to Switzerland, where he married Rebecca Raynolds (Reynolds). In 1767 John Teeter moved his family to South Carolina. In 1778, Rebecca died and three years later John married a German woman in South Carolina, Elizabeth Rudolph. A Beam family genealogy provdies very good historical detail and texts form newspaper articles about this family. -- http://www.frontiernet.net/~beam/teeter/b90.htm#P19 (No longer online)
A Hamrick family genealogy reports that Martin Samuel Beam was born in Switzerland, but gives no source for this fact. But US censuses from 1850 report him as born in North Carolina, as do several family genealogies. Martin Samuel Beam Birth 15 Feb 1801 in Geneva, Switzerland Death 25 Feb 1866 in NC Burial Rutherfordton City Cem, Rutherfordton, Rutherford, NC Marriage 2 Sep 1822 to Rebecca Harrill in NC Birth 7 Jun 1802 in NC Death 30 Aug 1892 in NC -- Ancestry Trees, Hamricks of Ireland, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9887369/person/-728328093 This Hamrick genealogy appears to have confused Martin's birth place with that of his father David, reported by other sources to have been born in Switzerland on 17 Apr 1767. David Beam Birth 17 Apr 1767 in Geneva, Switzerland Death 4 Jan 1858 in Rutherford, North Carolina, United States Spouse Rachel Cain Birth 2 Oct 1777 in Lincoln, North Carolina Death 10 Apr 1865 in Rutherford, North Carolina Son Martin Samuel Birth 15 Feb 1801 in North Carolina Death 28 Feb 1866 in Rutherford, North Carolina -- Jim Blanton, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7871629/person/-222650432?ftm=1 The Hamrick and Blanton genealogies and others report the date of Martin's marriage to Rebecca Harrill as 2 September 1822. One or two report 3 September 1822. Several of the genealogies cite a marriage record for the documentation of this. There are 2 problems with this. One problem is that the name of the husband in this marriage record is David Beam. North Carolina Marriage Collection, 1741-2004, www.ancestry.com Source: County Court Records Rutherfordton, NC David Beam, Spouse: Rebeckah Harrill, Marriage 2 Sep 1822 Rutherford County, North Carolina The second is that the birth date reported by most of the genealogies for their first son is in 1818! And interestingly, that son's name is David. What is going on here? The year date of 1822 could work, as Rebecca would be 20 years old and Martin 21. But if their son David was born in 1818, it is 99% likely they married before this date., about 1917. In that case Rebecca would have been only 15, not impossible but a bit unusual, 16-17 being more common. Another genealogist reports some family details from family sources. This reports the date of marriage as 23 September 1822. This sounds more reasonable, since theire is a mismatch of the husband's name in teh 2 September record. =============================== Information about Rebecca and Martin Beam. Misses Bettie and Ida Green of Ellenboro, North Carolina, early teachers in Rutherford County schools, gave the date of birth, death, and marriage of Rebecca and Martin Beam to Irene Harrill as follows. Rebecca Harrill - b. June 7, 1802, d. August 30, 1892, m. September 23, 1822 Martin Beam - b. February 15, 1801, d. February 28, 1866 Miss Bettie was doubtless the only person living at the time of Irene Harrill's life that knew exactly where the graves of Housand Harrill and Frances Philadelphia Street Harrill were located. Miss Bettie and Ida evidently never married and they, too, were descendents of Housand and Frances Harrill. -- Harrill Genealogy, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1477149/person/-1177648013/media/3 =============================== I have not found a marriage record for a Rebecca Harrill to Martin Beam. 1850 Federal Census, Rutherford County, North Carolina, 7 September, Sandy Run, page 628, Hse #1216, Fam #1247 Martin Beam 49 M Hatter b North Carolina [abt 1801] Rebeca [sic] Beam 48 F b North Carolina [abt 1802] Amela [sic] Beam 27 F b North Carolina Mary Beam 18 F b North Carolina William Beam 17 M b North Carolina Martha Beam 14 F b North Carolina Sarah Beam 11 F b North Carolina David Beam 8 M b North Carolina John Beam 5 M b North Carolina Martin Beam 5mos M b North Carolina 1860 Federal Census, Rutherford County, North Carolina, 26 July, 2nd Broad River District, PO Webb's Ford, page 209 (scan 380), Hse/Fam #1525 Martin Beam 59 M Farmer $1200 REal Estate $1000 Personal b North Carolina [abt 1801] Rebbeca [sic] Beam 58 F b North Carolina [abt 1802] William Beam 17 M b North Carolina Martha Beam 14 F b North Carolina Sarah Beam 11 F b North Carolina David Beam 8 M b North Carolina John H Beam 5 M b North Carolina Martin Beam 5mos M b North Carolina Mary McDaniel 30 F b North Carolina Louvisa McDaniel 5 F b North Carolina Rachel McDaniel 3 F b North Carolina Mary McDaniel appears to be the person enumerated in 1850 as Mary Beam age 18. Parazade and Pansey are commonly reported by genealogies as the same wife, and the mother of all the reported children. There are considerable discrepancies in the census record details under each of these names. The name of William B Hill's wife was reported in 1900 as Pansey. Parazade was the thrid wife of William Buster Hill. 1900 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma Territory, 4 June, Cloud Chief Township, District 207, page 3A, Hse/Fam #45 Hill, William B Head W M Jan 1854 45 married 13 years [mar abt 1887] KY MO MO Farmer Owns Hill, Pansey Wife W F Mar 1877 23 married 13 yrs 6 child/6 living MS GA SC Hill, Leona Dau W F Aug 1888 11 TX MS KY [? The top part of the formula from the family below covers part of the name record for the last child. I cannot tell if the "S" is part of that tally or an initial for the child. It l ooks like Mik or Mike. But other sources tell us his name is actually McQueen C HIll. Also if McQueen's age is correct, he was born about 1884, before William and Pansey married, not 1888 as the enumerator wrote. So this must be the child of a wife before Pansey, whose name was Nancy Sullins. This is supported by the report of a different birth state for McQueen's mother, Missouri, while the mother of the other children is reported born in Mississippi. The 1900 census reports that Pansey has borne 6 children in those 13 years. And there are 6 children listed before the entry of Mike S Hill. The total number of children born reported in 1900 and 1910 is less than the number of children listed in the two censuses. The reports of the number of years married do not match, which does happen often in the census estimates and poor memories that seem to be reported. The length of marriage reported in 1910 overlaps with the birth period of children reported in the 1900 census. But it is not long enough to account for the earlier children. Note that the birth place of the father and mother is opposite on Leona, the first child, from the following 5 children or Pansey. This could be just an enumerator error on that one entry. But could this be an indication of some other factor? I note that William is reported in the 1920 census as having been married three times. Parazade (Parazied) is the third. (Note that the Ancestry.com transcription for some reason reverses the birth states of William and Pansey, reporting William born in Mississippi and Pansey born in Kentucky. Then other sources report William born in Missouri.) Pansey was reported born in Mississippi, but in 1910, P is reported only as born in the US, as are her parents. In 1920, Beardon (Parazade) is reported born in Mississippi, but her parents were born in North Carolina, while Pansey's were reported born in Georgia an South Carolina. We had originally accounted for these discrepancies by considering Pansey and Parazade two wives, with an earlier unknown wife as the mother of Mike. While there are errors in the census reports, the similar ages and broad similarity of the names Pansey and Parazade support the conclusion that Parazade and Pansey are the same person. Their birth times and ages also match in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. In 1920 the wife is reported as Beardon (this would be definitely be Parazade Bearden) and we are told they have been married 20 years, meaning they married about 1890! This makes it appear that Pansey of 1900 and Beardon of 1910 are the same wife, with some error in reported length of marriage. Pansey appears to be an enumerator misunderstanding of the name Parazade. The name on her grave is spelled Parazied. The 1920 census does not report length of marriage or year of first marriage. The following notes came from Pamela Dyess Mann. It appears from sources cited that Richard lived to be two weeks short of 100 years old. However, the actual age reported in the June 1860 census was 103, which would make the birth year 1757. This source has an exact birth date, which would make the age 100 on July 6 1860. The notes below from that same source say Richard was 92 in 1850, and Sarah age 85. In the 1860 census Sarah does not appear.
