--------------------- John Burel's widow, Patience Hanna Bird Burel, was still living in the Union District of South Carolina in 1848, when she applied for a widow's pension based on Jean/John Burel's service in the Revolutionary War. In that application she declared that she "is the widow of Dr. John Burelle who was a surgeon in the French Army & Navy in America under Major General Lafayette & served in that capacity with the Allied forces from the time he entered the service in 1778 until the French Army was discharged at the close of the War, and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to the Allied forces of France and America under General Washington and General LaFayette & other French officers at Yorktown." She enclosed a certificate of her marriage and John's French medical license, which prove that Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel of Ollioules Frances and John Burel of Goshen Hill were the same individual. According to those who have written about Jean Burel's life and history, the certificate and license are in the archives of the Veterans' Administration. -- Janice Tracy, Mississippi Memories, http://mymississippimemories.blogspot.com/2009/03/burel-family-pennsylvaniaunion-county.html ---------------------- "Dr. John's grave has been located and a marker has placed. Marie Blanche was born an Hebert in Acadia and was deported by the British along with her husband John Cellier in 1755. They were sent by ship to Philadelphia where they detained aboard ship for a time. John Cellier died a couple of years after that and Marie Blanche Hebert eventually married Jonathan Bird. Marie Blanche and Cellier are well documented in Acadian lineage and Marie Blanche Hebert traces back to the original settlers of Acadia. Any questions you may have about this can be followed up on the Acadian genealogy group on Facebook. I have absolutely no info on Jonathan Bird past the fact that he married Marie Blanche. -- Butch Burel, Find a Grave Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 16 April 2016 --------------------- Thanks to Butch Burel for this well-stated summary of Patience's heritage. This clarifies that Patience was not born in Acadia, and that her father was American. Her mother was Acadian, but Hannah was born in Philadelphia. --------------------- Patience Hanna Bird Burel Birth abt 1760 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Death after 1848 Goshen Hill, Union County, South Carolina No exact date has been found for Patience's birth and death. She was born about 1760, and died after 1848, when she applied for a widow's military pension. She applied for a widow's pension in 1848, based on Jean's service with the French and American Allied forces in the American Revolution. Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. One or more commentators state that Patience was an Acadian. Her mother was Acadian, being born an Hebert in Acadia, (later Novia Scotia), Canada, a descendant of the original Acadian French settlers. But her father was American, and Patience was born in Philadelphia. Butch Burel provided a summary of Patience's heritage. ----------- Patience Hannah Bird was the daughter of Jonathan Bird and Marie Blanche Hebert (pronounced abair). She had 6 children in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before they moved to Goshen Hill, in Union District of South Carolina sometime after August 1804, when their last child was born in Philadelphia. There she and Jean/John lived out the rest of their lives, closely associated with the Jenkins family there. Patience died some time after 1848, when she applied for a military pension based on Dr John's Revolutionary War service. The story was reported in a Wisconsin newspaper, included by Staci Pollard in Ne-dah's memorial on Find a Grave. The dateline in the story in Dallas, Texas, and is dated 12 December. The date of publication is 13 December 1904, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The story has some puzzling aspects. Perhaps Aubra had some connection with Eau Claire. But the story from a Dallas dateline as well as the Eau Claire location of publication makes it puzzling that the town of Cache (in Comanche County, Oklahoma) is referred to with no further identification, as though it was very familiar to the readers. I would think even Dallas residents in 1904 would have needed or liked some indication of where "Cache" was, let alone readers in Wisconsin. With the dateline in Dallas being "Dec 12," and the Wisconsin newspaper date of December 13, 1904, it seems the marriage took place on the evening of 11 December 1904 ("last night") in Dallas. A C maried Nedah Parker, the daughter of Quanah, Parker, in 1904. But there is another marriage record for them in 1929 in Parker County, Tesas. This reports both with the surname Birdsong. This was a railroad town in Sabine Parish. The town had originally been Pleasant HIll, and was in the edge of DeSoto Parish. But the town moved to the Railroad, about two miles away and across the line into Sabine Parish. The new town was called Sodus. The name Pleasant Hill continued in use by the residents, and the railroad changed the name back to Pleasant HIll. ---------------------------- The Civil War ended. In 1881, the railroad came. Again, Pleasant Hill changed; the town moved. Since the railroad, the Texas and Pacific, did not come to the town, the town went to the railroad. The new community, about two miles away and in Sabine Parish, was called Sodus; but the residents, most of whom had moved from the old town, continued to say Pleasant Hill. In 1922, the railroad commissioners decided to drop the name Sodus. In 1876, a land transaction in which Robert Bishop willed land to John Gregory Jr (son of John Gregory and Elizabeth Bishop) probably refers to Robert Bishop Jr, the son of Robert Bishop and brother of Elizabeth Bishop, wife of John Gregory Sr. But the actual transfer took place in 1677, according to earlier records.
