But the 1920 census enumerated Mattie Black as Martha D Black, suggesting that, despite all the records with the common nickname, her actual given name was, in fact, Martha. We do find many families in this community naming children nicknames as their given name. We also see the common format of recording people under their nicknames, even in marriage and death certificates and such, even though there is evidence of their full proper given names. This is the tendency in the US until after WWI. 1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 27 January, La Grue Township, District 12, DeWitt Town, page 20B, Hse #261, Fam #267 Black, Frank Head Rents M W 46 MS MS GA Teammaster, Livery Black, Julia Wife F W 46 AR AR AL No Occupation Black, Martha D Dau F W 21 Single AR MS AL No Occupation Bass, Agnes C Roomer F W 74 Widow AR TN AR No Occupation Note that in 1920 the birth place of Mattie's mother has changed from Arkansas to Alabama. 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 22 April, Prairie Township, District 25, Ethel and Point Rd, Page 7A, Hse #126, Fam #127 Brown, Cecil Head M W 33 IN IN IN Farmer Brown, Mattie Wife F W 31 AR AR AR -- page 7B -- Clyde R Brown Son M W 8 AR IN AR Daisy V Brown Dau M W 7 AR IN AR ernie J Brown Son M W 5 AR IN AR Cecil C Brown Son M W 1yr5mos AR IN AR [b abt Oct 1928] 1940 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 8 April, Ethel, District 1-26, page 3B, Belleview Rd, Hse #46, Owns Farm, $600 value Brown, Cecil Head M W 44 Grade 8 b Indiana same house in 1935 Farmer Brown, Mattie Wife F W 48 Grade 8 b Arkansas same house in 1935 Housekeeper Brown, Clyde Son M W 18 Single Grade 8 b Arkansas same house in 1935 Farm Laborer Brown, Dassie [Daisy] Dau F W 17 Grade 8 b Arkansas same house in 1935 Housekeeper Brown, Joe Son M W 15 Single Grade 8 b Arkansas same house in 1935 Brown, Curtiss Son M W 12 Single Grade 5 b Arkansas same house in 1935 Brown, Marion Son M W 5 Single Grade 0 b Arkansas same house in 1935 Brown, Lewis Son M W 2 Single Grade 0 b Arkansas St Charles Cemetery Gravestone Brown Mattie Dee Jan 9, 1899 Sept 28, 1986; St Charles Cemetery, St Charles, Arkansas Photo by Orville Boyd Jenkins 12 May 2017 ---------------- Martha Dee âMattieâ Black Brown Birth 9 Jan 1899 Prairie Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Death 28 Sep 1986 (aged 87) Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Burial Saint Charles Cemetery, Saint Charles, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Martha was always called by her nickname, Mattie. There is an entry and a writover in the designation for both Son-Daughter and Male-Female. The problem is, it is difficult to tell which was original and which is the writeover correction. I read it as Dauighter and Female, despite the male name Beaufort. 1910 Federal Census, Armstrong County, Texas, 18 April, Goodnight, District 7, page 1A, Hse/Fam #4 Black, Sam H Head M W 50 Married 30 years TX TN OH Farmer Owns Black, Mary Wife F W 48 Married 30 years 10 children/8 living MS AL GA Black, Alfred Son M W 20 TX TX MS Black, Lloyd Son M W 18 TX TX MS Black, Buford Son M W 15 OK TX MS Black, Orville Son M W 15 OK TX MS Black, Earl Son M W 15 OK TX MS Black, Velma Dau F W 10 OK TX MS The child designated as the son Buford in 1910 matches the daughter Beaufort in the 1900 census. When I saw Beaufort designated as a daughter I thought this strange, since that is a boy's name. It appears to be corrected now with the designation of Buford as the son. Further documentation will help us determine if the name of this son was Buford or Beaufort. I suspected it was Buford. However the confirming evidence goes the other direction, when in 1930 we see Beaufort Wallace in the household designated as a daughter, divorced, with a child. Thus Beaufort appears to be the correct form of the name, and the 1900 census entry corrected to read Daughter and Female, is the correct 1900 reading.
