Notes for Delora Alma BLACK

Delora was enumerated in her first census, at age 1, under her middle name
Alma. All later records refer to her as Delora or Delora A.

1900 Federal Census, Stonewall County, Texas, 18 June, Justice Precinct 3,
District 46, page 2B, Hse/Fam #26

Delora's married name from her first marriage was McKeen. Her maiden name was
Black. As a widow she married Thomas Gilbert Green in Fresno County,
California, about 1929.

The 1930 census reports that Thomas was married for the first time at age 38,
and he is 39 in that census. But Delora was married for the first time at age
20. Thus she was married the first time about 1919. Her two daughters from
her previous marriage are listed in the Green household in the 1930 census.

Mary and Florence McKeen's father is reported born in Oklahoma. But further
investigation indicated that their father was Alonzo Thomas McKeen, born in
New Mexico, where Delora also married him. A genealogy reports that Delora's
maiden name was Black. The California Death Index reports Thomas McKeen's
birth in New Mexico as well as his death in San Bernardino County, California,
in 1978. This fact indicates the Thomas and Delora were divorced, then she
married Thomas Green in 1929. They would have divorced after the 1921 city
directory.

The genealogy reports that Delora married Thomas Keen in Eddy County, New
Mexico, probably in Carlsbad, the county seat.

Gunter's parents, John O and Jennie McKeen, are living next door to them on
the Olive Sands Ranch, where both John and Gunter are working as laborers on
the ranch. Both couples are reported as renting their home, though housing
may be provided as part of the employment. Gunter's brother John is also a

Notes for Margaret Rebecca Eliza BLACK

Margaret is commonly referred to as Maggie, in records and family references.
The name given her on her memorial on Find a Grave is Mary Margaret Black

Catherine. The three given names on her death certificate are Margaret
Rebecca Eliza.

The birth states are confused on both the 1920 and 1930 censuses. In 1920 and
1930, Margaret Black is reported as born in North Carolina. But her
children's reports all report the mother born in South Carolina. Oliver is
reported in 1920 as born in South Carolina, but in 1930 it is North Carolina.
In 1880 his birth state was reported as South Carolina. Does this mean that
some or all of Margaret's children were the children of a first husband, not
Oliver?

Notes for Martha Dee BLACK

Edith McSwain Jenkins initially provided the given name of Mattie. George
McSwain provided the maiden name. In the 1900 census, Mattie is enumerated by
her nickname Mattie.

Most records have her name as Mattie, the common nickname for Martha. Some
families did name the children nickname forms, like Mattie's granddaughter
Mattie Ruth McSwain. But the 1920 census enumerated Mattie Black as Martha D
Black, suggesting that, despite all the records with the common nickname, her
actual given name was, in fact, Martha.

We do find many families in this community naming children nicknames as their
given name. We also see the common format of recording people under their
nicknames, even in marriage and death certificates and such, even though there
is evidence of their full proper given names. This is the tendency in the US
until after WWI.

The entry for the child Beaufort is difficult to decipher. There is an entry
and a writover in the designation for both Son-Daughter and Male-Female. The
problem is, it is difficult to tell which was original and which is the
writeover correction. I read it as Dauighter and Female, despite the male
name Beaufort.

The child designated as the son Buford in 1910 matches the daughter Beaufort
in the 1900 census. When I saw Beaufort designated as a daughter I thought
this strange, since that is a boy's name. It appears to be corrected now with
the designation of Buford as the son. Further documentation will help us
determine if the name of this son was Buford or Beaufort. I suspected it was
Buford.

However the confirming evidence goes the other direction, when in 1930 we see
Beaufort Wallace in the household designated as a daughter, divorced, with a
child. Thus Beaufort appears to be the correct form of the name, and the 1900
census entry corrected to read Daughter and Female, is the correct 1900
reading.

There were no chuildren in their home in 1920.
