I have not identified Yancy's family before 1900. There are many Bledsoe families in Henderson and other counties of Tennessee. In censuses, Yancy's age varies, yielding a birth year of abt 1866 or 1870. There is also another Yancy Bledsoe, also born in Tennessee, and whose census ages usually suggest birth in the year 1866. This Yancy may be a cousin, from Henderson County, Tennessee, and in Texas about the same time as our Yancy and his family. The fathers of both Yancys are Physicians, which seems to make it likely they are brothers, or perhaps cousins. Yancy's grandson Charles Christian, tells me that the Yancy family moved to Texas about 1893. He also told me that Yancy's parents were Jacob D Bledsoe and Mary W Allen. ----------------- Yancy B Bledsoe's father was Dr. Jacob D Bledsoe, mother was Mary W Allen. Dr. Jacob D Bledsoe was born in 1838 in Milam, Tenn.. He Married Mary in 1863 and they migrated to Deport, Texas about 1893. They had two son's Yancy B and Oscar Newton. Yancy married (Lorena Luceny Stallings) November 1896 in Detroit, Texas,Red River County. Ceny Stallings was originally from Alamo, Tenn.. They had two children a son Claire and a daughter Ruth. Ruth was born 11,22,1900 in Deport Texas. Oscar Newton Bledsoe married Annie Morgan they had no children. Yancy and family moved to Idabel, Ok around 1910, Claire was 12 years old and Ruth was 10. Dr. Jacob D Bledsoe served in the civil war with the rank of Captain and was reported wounded in the battle of Atlanta. Dr. Jacob moved to Detroit,Texas about 1893 then moved to Idabel, Ok.around 1907. He did not practice medicine in Idabel due to failing eyesight. He died March 11, 1925 and is buried in the Dennison Cemetery in Idabel, Ok. His wife Mary W died 1926 and is also buried in the Dennison Cemetery in Idabel, Ok. Oscar Bledsoe died Jan 6, l926 in Idabel, Ok. Burial unknown. No record of wife. Yancy Bledsoe died Dec 20 1925 and is buried in Dennison Cemetery in Idabel, Ok.his wife Ceny Bledsoe died in 1961 age 90 and is buried in Dennison Cemetery, in Idabel, Ok. -- Charles Christian, personal email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 January 2008 ----------------- In 1900 we find Yancy and his family, along with his parents, in north Texas, near Paris in Lamar County, close to the Red River. The 1900 census gives us month and year of births. While we have found those to vary wildly with amazing discrepancies, I will use the birth dates given in the census for the Bledsoe family. The birth date of Yancey here is May 1866. His wife's name is spelled Ceny in every census, except this one, where it is Scenie. In 1900 Yancy and Ceny (Scenie) are living next door to what appears to be Yancy's parents. The names are somewhat obscured, especially the husband's. It appeared to be John and Willie. John is a Physician, which matches Yancy's father Jacob. The name in the 1900 census is uncertain because the tally marks for the page are right over the elder Bledsoe's name. It begins with a J and then it looks like an O, but it is difficult to decipher. Besides the tally marks, the name above is Lizzie, and the tails of the two Zs are full and long and also cover most of the Bledsoe name area. The name Willie or Willy could be for the middle name of Yancy's mother, Mary W. 1900 Federal Census, Lamar County, Texas, 23 June, Justice Precinct 7, District 86, page 19B, east of Bee Bayou, Hse #335, Fam #346 Bledsoe, John (?) Mary Keener commented on a photo on her genealogy of the cemetery where Armstead Blevins and his wife Juleyann Campbell were buried, with the following comment. "Blevins Family Cemetery. Reverend Armstead Elza Blevins Jr and his wife Juleyan Campbell Blevins are buried here. Juleyan's parents Adam and Lucretia Green Campbell are buried a few miles away. Cullman County, Alabama" Posted 12 February 2015 (Photo by Deborah J Thompson) An anonymous user on Ancestry added the following comment about the burial. "We know from Cynthia Almedia Blevins 'Mama' White that Armstead Sr and Celia Blevins were buried on top of a mountain where Rock Creek meets the Sipsey River. There is a Wilson Cemetery in this area where several other Blevins and Campbells are buried. And there are a large number of old, unreadable stones. It is possible that Armstead and Celia's are among those. The location and age of the cemetery fit what we do know about their burials." From The Cullman Democrat 18 Dec 1924 Submitted by Robin Sterling Pioneer Minister Buried Rev. Arm Blevins, one of the oldest and most respected ministers in the county, died at his home on Bremen Route 1, on Monday. He was 83 years of age at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away two years ago. Mr. Blevins spent his long life mostly in this county. The funeral was conducted by the Masons and he was buried Wednesday in the Blevins cemetery in Bremen. From "Mama White" Cynthia Almeadia Blevins: Armstead Jr. was her grandfather and says that he wanted badly to go to war but his parents and his brothers wouldn't let him go. So he ran away, traveled up the Sipsey River to the Tennessee River where he swam across and joined the Union Army. He spent only about 8 months however, in the army and most of that was in a hospital in Nashville. From History of Methodism in Alabama and West Florida, by Marion Eliza Lazenby, 1960, North Alabama Conference and Alabama-West Florida Conference of the Methodist Church, page 698 Submitted by Robin Sterling A.E. Blevins enlisted March 1, 1865, in the Union Army and was mustered out in October 1865. In 1867 he was born of the spirit and united with the M.E. Church. He was licensed to preach in 1890. He served from 1897 until 1913, when he retired. He loved the church and went cheerfully to every charge to which appointed. Buried Blevins Family Cemetery, Cullman Co., AL A letter from Keener Barnes, The Director of Archives and History for The United Methodist Church, North Alabama Conference wrote a letter of reply on Jan 7, 1971 to Mrs. Lee Blevins 405 White Circle, Cullman, AL and relayed this info: "In 1867, Armstead E. Blevins was recorded in the history of the Methodism Episcopal Church. He was licensed to preach in 1890. He served from until his retirement in 1913. "He loved the Church", the historian Dr. M. E. Lazenby stated, and "went cheerfully to every charge to which he was appointed." This would seem to explain why his name was not listed on the Centennial program in Gadsden, Nov 16, 1970 as he was not licensed to preach until 1890." The 1860 Census shows the family living in Winston County, AL and that all the children were born in AL. They homesteaded 160 acres of land in the eastern section of Winston County in the southern part of Flat Rock Community near Rock Creek, now Smith Lake. Armstead Jr. (later Reverend), enlisted in the Union Army when he was about 18. The History of Methodism in Alabama and West Florida by M.E. Lazenby has the following to say about "Uncle Arm": In 1867, Armstead E. Blevins was born of the Spirit and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, licensed to preach in 1890, joined the Alabama Conference in 1897, he served charges from 1897 until 1913 when he retired. He loved the church and went cheerfully to each charge to which he was appointed." "Uncle Arm" as he was called by his friends, faithfully served the Flat Rock Charge from 1907 to 1912. Eldredge Thomas had this to say about "Uncle Arm": "He was a minister I always enjoyed hearing preach. He would tell jokes part of the time and war stories. He would always spend the night with Uncle Tom Morrow and they would talk most of the night about their experiences in the Civil War."
