U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 William Wallace Bliss Spouse Name Mary Elizabeth Taylor Marriage Year 1848 Louisiana Marriages to 1850 Name Bliss, William Spouse Taylor, Elizabeth Marriage 4 Dec 1848 This source has a date a day earlier than all other sources, family or official. The accepted date of the marriage is 5 December 1848. I suspect the date on this Louisiana source is the date of issuance of the license, with the marriage taking place the next day. The image of the record was not available, only a transcription on Ancestry.com. "William Wallace Smith Bliss (August 17, 1815 - August 5, 1853) was a United States Army officer. He was born in Whitehall, New York. He was the son of Captain John Bliss (of Lebanon, New Hampshire) and Olive Hall Simonds (of Todd County, Kentucky). John Bliss was a graduate of West Point in 1811. ... On December 5, 1848, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he married the general's youngest daughter, Mary Elizabeth Taylor ("Miss Betty"). When General Taylor became President of the United States, on 4 March 1849 he became Private Secretary to the President. ... Following a visit to plague-ridden New Orleans on behalf of Tulane University then named the University of Louisiana, Colonel Bliss died of Yellow Fever at Pascagoula 5 August 1853, aged 38. ... A twenty-foot memorial of Italian marble was raised to the memory of Colonel Bliss, "a finished scholar, an accomplished gentleman and a gallant soldier", in the Girod Street Cemetery, New Orleans. In 1955, the cemetery being condemned for the building of a highway, Colonel Blissâ remains and monument were moved to Fort Bliss [which was named for him in 1854]." -- Wikipedia, William Wallace Smith Bliss" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wallace_Smith_Bliss

I found a UK Birth Index that provides only an index by quarters, giving us a range of 3 months for Alice's birth date. England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 Volume 3b, Page 224 Alice Maud Bodger Date of Registration Jan-Feb-Mar 1869 Peterborough, Northamptonshire [Huntingdonshire] Two years later Alice was enumerated with her family in the 1871 census of Huntingdonshire, England. 1871 England Census, Huntingdonshire County, 18 April, Orton Longville, page 141, St Thomas Green, Hse #3 Charles Bodger Head M 24 Laborer b Thornbaugh, Northampton, England Mary Ann Bodger Wife F 25 b Longstantion [Longstanton?], Cambridgeshire Charles J Bodger Son 9 M Scholar b Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire William Bodger Son 7 M Scholar b Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire Fanny Bodger Dau 5 F Scholar b Orton Longville, Huntingdonshire Emma J Bodger Dau 3 F Scholar b Orton Longville, Huntingdonshire Alice Bodger Dau 2 F b Orton Longville, Huntingdonshire Harriett Green Servant 19 F General Servant b Eye, Northamptonshire Mary Norman Servant 14 F General Servant b Eye, Northamptonshire William Watson Servant 16 F Groom b Newborough, Northamptonshire Note that Alice's birthplace is different. The birth record reports birth place as Peterborough, and infers that is in Northamptonshire, but the 1871 census 2 years later reports she was born in the current village of residence, Orton Longville, in Huntingdonshire. This is also the same county where her father was born. It would seem this is correct. The discrepancy is explained historically by later changes in county boundaries, which placed Peterborough within the bounds or Northamptonshire. At the time of Alice's birth, Peterborough was in Huntingdonshire. "The area corresponding to modern Huntingdonshire was first delimited in Saxon times, and the modern boundaries have remained largely unchanged since the 10th century. "Status "In 1889, under the Local Government Act 1888 Huntingdonshire became an administrative county, with the new County Council taking over administrative functions from the Quarter Sessions. The area in the north of the county forming part of the municipal borough of Peterborough became instead part of the Soke of Peterborough administrative county, in Northamptonshire." -- "Huntingdonshire," Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntingdonshire But another part of the discrepancy is the actual name of the village. The census says she was born in Orton Longville, not the nearby city of Peterborough, as reported by the birth index. For that detail, it seems more appropriate to follow the Birth Index record. Likely they were living in Orton Longville, but she was born in Peterborough. In 1881, we find Alice living in London with her aunt's family, as a "scholar," meaning student. 1881 England Census, Huntingdonshire County, [no date], Hammersmith, Chelsea, page 74, 5 Crofton Terrace, Hse #337 Ruben W Tavener Head M 35 Linen Draper b Marylebone, London, England Jemima Tavener Wife F 39 b Thornbaugh, Northamptonshire Mary J Tavener Dau 1 F b Hammersmith, London N---? From the birthplace, we can tell that Jemima Tavener is the older sister of Alice's father Charles. In the 1920 census, Alice is enumerated as a widowed head of household with three teenage children. At the time of finding this census, I did not have Alice's name or her husband's name or anything else except the info from the two children from the 1930 census, Eurich V and Betty Lou. These two seemed to match two of the three here, Eyrick V and F Louise. This directory entry was the first record providing Alice's husband's name and her middle initial. Cyril and Eyrick of the 1920 census are here, and still in her household. We learn that she owns a Carpet Cleaning business and Eyrick is working in the business while Cyril is a student. We find other Eynons here. It appears that David is a son of Frank and his wife. All the others may also be, but the Miner might be a brother of Frank, whom I assume is Emyr's brother. Alice is listed in the 1925 and 1926 Seattle, Washington, city directories. Eyrick is with her in 1925. In 1926 no children are with her; she is the only one with this surname in the directory. The residence address changes between the entries. Her grave information has her name as Maude Alice. But the California Death Index reports her name as Alice Maude. On Alice's memorial on Find a Grave her name is a bit confusing, because there are two forms that are not clearly explained. Her entry name is given as Maude Alice Bodger Bernard. This form and order normally indicates that Bodger was her maiden name and Bernard one of her married names, usually the last one. But the confusing explanatory subtitle tells us her original name was Maude Alice Bernard, which seems to mean this was her maiden name from her father. But we know from earlier that her maiden name was Bodger. Maude Alice Bodger Bernard Original name: Maude Alice Bernard [? Father's name was Bodger] Birth 1869, England Death 1959 Salt Lake County, Utah Spouse Emyr Eynon (1860 - 1912) Burial Mount Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah Plot: R_121_10F Imported from UT State Historical Society, Record added Feb 02, 2000 -- Find A Grave Memorial #172429, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=172429 However, Bernard was apparently a second married name. I can't figure out why the Find-a-Grave memorial puts the married name as the "original name." The California Death Index has her registered under the name Bernard but notes her father's name was Bodger. Note also that the memorial reports that she died in Salt Lake City, but there is an entry in California Death Index reporting her death in Los Angeles County, California. I take this legal index as correct. It may well be that her residence was still Salt Lake and that she was in Los Angeles when she died, either on a visit or for medical treatment.
