Lucy's death certificate, though, reports her father was born in Louisiana. But it also says she was, and this does not fit the records and to ther family residence information. Further, Lucy Belle and two sisters were all reported with the surname of Winter also. John married Mattie Katherine Gregory (1888-1962), daughter of Andrew Jackson Gregory and Letha Few on 24 December 1926 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. He died of a coronary occlusion on 15 Jul 1953. John's father has two burial plots, one in their original home of Jefferson County, Kansas, and the other where John and his mother moved and later died and were buried, in Jefferson County, Tennessee. The other memorial for the Kansas burial of John's father William Henry Bradshaw is #52996799. The Kansas memorial for W H tells us he had lived there most of his life and had taught school there the year before he died. The memorial for his Kansas burial provides the name of William Henry's wife, John's mother, as Elizabeth Cline, matching the burial under that name in Strawberry Plains Cemetery. The burial plot and marker for William (W H) in Tennessee is thus a memorial to complete the family group in the Strawberry Plains cemetery. Parents: W. H. W H Bradshaw Birth Jun. 30, 1845 Death Aug. 19, 1890 Inscription: "In Memory" Memorial monument in Strawberry Plains Cemetery, Strawberry Plains, Jefferson County, Tennessee Created by CA-M Nov 16, 2004 -- Find A Grave Memorial #9910687, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=9910687 There are two different grave memorials in different states with the same dates of birth and death. The other burial is in Kansas, and has the name of W H's wife as Elizabeth Cline, matching a grave in the Strawberry Plains Cemetery. There is no matching grave for Elizabeth Cline in the Kansas cemetery. The Kansas grave has his full name as William Henry Bradshaw. It is in a group of Bradshaws, and the obituary says he was resident there and had taught in the school the previous year. So this must be the actual place of death. The grave in Tennessee is likely a memorial. His wife and son must have moved to Tennessee after William's death. But his son John was born in Tennessee in 1886, two years after their marriage. Some genealogies report that William married Cassandra Elizabeth Cline in Tennessee on 10 March 1884. This makes sense, because of multiple documentation of the birth of their son John P Bradshaw in Jefferson City, Jefferson County, Tennessee. But it makes us wonder what the obituary meant about William living most of his life in Jefferson County, Kansas, near Winchester, and teaching school there and serving as superintendent of schools. With his teaching there the year before he died, this sounds pretty permanent. It sounds like at least the last 3 years (2 as superintendent and one as teacher at Center) he was definitely resident in the Winchester, Kansas area. ------------------------ William Henry Bradshaw Birth Jun. 30, 1845 Death Aug. 19, 1890 William was the son of Lewis Bradshaw & Catherine Lamar. William was the husband of Elizabeth Cline. (Cemetery book) Winchester Herald, August 22, 1890 "DIED - Wm. Bradshaw, August 19, 1890, at his home northwest of Winchester. He was for two years county superintendent of Leavenworth county, and taught the Center school last year. Mr. Bradshaw has long been a resident of this county, and is well-known in this vicinity. Mary Ann's maiden name came from Steve Squier's tree. We had worked together on our common branch of the Gregory lineage. But he has no documentation or citations, so it was valuable only as a clue. William died in August 1837 and his father was appointed the administrator, but then died beforre the process could be completed. One of the provisions of Tennessee law is that a widow is entitled to dower rights, that is the produce of crops and edible yield as well as some of the livestock of the land for one year. In the original probate decisoins in 1837, one record indicates such a privision was implemented. Tennessee, Wills and Probate Records, 1779-2008 Wm Gregory Allowance to Widow Mary Ann Jefferson, Tennessee: supplies, livestock and crops equivalent to the support for 1 year. Three men were assigned to do this, and they signed the probate record to that effect. The case was still open by 1859, when Mary Ann and her new husband Andrew Mason sued her father's estate for dower lands due her by Tennessee law. My thanks to co-researcher Erin M L for pointing me to this and other relevant Tennessee Supreme Court cases in June 2019. This summary record tells us Mary Ann and William had one chld, a daughter Darthula (or Dorthula, as transcribed in the record). ------------------------------- 1859 Andrew L & Mary Ann Mason v B J & Dorthula A Ward Jefferson County, Tennessee Fraud Defendant's name is Benjamin F Ward. William Gregory died owning land on south side of French Broad River, leaving plaintiff Mary Ann (who later married Andrew) as his widow. Richard Gregory, deceased, administered William's estate but never assigned dower to Mary Ann, so Plaintiffs now claim dower out of that land. William & Mary Ann had 1 child, Defendant Dorthula. Catherine Brandon married Thomas Young, who predeceased her. Mary mentioned her children in her will, written 31 August 1819. It was entered into probate on 6 January 1815, placing her death in early January or perhaps later December 1814. Among the children mentoined in her will were two daughters, Mary Ann and Lettice, who both married Gregorys. Mary Ann (or Marian) married Robert Gregory (born about 1790), son of Isaac Gregory (born about 1729-1734). Mary Ann Gregory and her sister Lettice (Letes) Gregory married .
