Idanell "Nellie" Brill Connally
Birth Feb. 24, 1919 Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
Death Sep. 1, 2006 Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA

Historical Figure, Author
Former Texas First Lady from 1963-1969
Wife of Governor John Connally

Last survivor of the car that carried President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. On
November 22, 1963, it was Mrs. Connally that uttered the last words the
president heard, "Mr. President, you can't say Dallas doesn't love you,"
moments later those fateful shots rang out.

Nellie Connally was born Idanell Brill in Austin, Texas one of five children
born to Katie and Arno Brill. She had always aspired to be an actress. She
even auditioned for the role of Scarlet O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind." In
1939 while at college she met her future husband John Connally. By the time
the two married a year later her acting career took a backseat.

She would be busy raising the couples for children and helping her husband
with his political aspirations. She would do everything she could from raising
money to answering phones. Her husband's mentor was future U.S. president
Lyndon Johnson. The Johnsons and the Connallys would remain forever friends,
even though Nellie learned he was a man that could not be crossed. Once when
answering phones for him she accidentally disconnected a line and Lyndon
Johnson threw a book in her direction.

She knew not to mess with him. Lady Bird Johnson However became a lifelong
friend and someone she admired very much. Nellie was a vivacious lady full of
spunk with a great sense of humor. She was a great asset to her husband's
campaign. In 1961 President Kennedy In 1961, President John F. Kennedy named
John Connally Secretary of the Navy. He did not stay at his job instead he ran
for Governor of the state of Texas. In 1963 he was elected Governor. It was in
November when the President decided to stop campaigning. A tour of Texas was
part of the tour. John Connally told his wife that if only the people can see
him they would surely elect him once again.

The Connallys would accompany the Kennedys on their tour. On November 21 they
went from Austin to San Antonio. November 22, 1963 they went to Fort Worth and
on to Dallas. Everywhere they went Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Connally received a
bouquet of roses. Later on she thought it was funny they had always received
yellow or white, but on that day it was red. The motorcade was on that warm
morning, and by day's end the President was dead and the Governor was
seriously wounded. After the second bullet hit her husband Nellie just stayed
patiently holding the hole in his chest assuring him things would be just
fine. She knew the President was already dead, and stayed focused on her
husband.

At the Hospital Jackie Kennedy and Nellie Connally sat next to each other,
silently waiting to hear the news of their husbands' fate. An attended
[attendant] came up to Nellie and told her they could not operate on her
husband until she filled out paperwork. Years later Nellie would recall that
if she had a gun she would have used it. She was put in a separate room to
wait for word of her husband. The only visit she got was from Lady Bird
Johnson with her arms stretched out ready to comfort her. She would learn her
husband survived. She did not attend the funeral for the President; instead
she sent her son John with a note for Mrs. Kennedy.

Jackie Kennedy told her [Nellie's] son that if anything good came out of this
it was that his father had lived. The two never spoke again. Nellie Connally
felt it was not fair that her John lived and Jackie's did not. John Connally
would go on to be Secretary of the treasury under Nixon, but his career ended
when he was accused of taking a bribe. Nellie would face a battle with breast
cancer that she would win. She would continue her volunteer work for
charitable causes. In 1993 John Connally died. In 1994 Jacqueline Kennedy
passed away at age 64 of cancer.

Nellie Connally was the last survivor of that Lincoln limousine. Nellie
Connally would always argue the fact that there was a second shooter on that
faithful [fateful] day. She would appear on interviews for the fortieth
anniversary in 2003. She would tell everyone she met, "You can argue with the
experts and the Warren commission, but you cannot argue with me, I was in the
car." In 2003 she published her account of the day for the first time with the
book, From Love Field; Our Final hours with President John F. Kennedy. A very
active person well into her eighties Mrs. Connally died peacfully in her sleep
at age 87.

Note that in this census, Fannie's birth place is now Texas, and instead of
North Carolina, her parents are reported born in Tennessee and Texas, the
location we have found in other public and family sources. The child reported
previously as Martha L is now Laura Mattie. Mattie is the nickname for Martha
and the L stood for Laura. We are uncertain at this point, though, of the
order of the names. I would venture that the original was Martha Laura. But
if she had decided to go by Laura, "Laura Mattie" sounds good.

Andrew's daughter Blanche Lenora Brinkley Williams wrote some brief notes
about the family. I received a scanned copy of this from cousin-researcher
Marion Mixon on 9 July 2009. Here is my transcription and notes.

======================
Brinkley-Hill

A W Brinkley, my father was born in April 14 1861 at Dyersburg Tenn; came to
Texas after he was grown but I don't remember just how old he was. They lived
in Ellis Co, and went to a little church called Glenco church, close to the
line of Hill Co; my grandfather Hill owned a farm that lay in Ellis, Hill, and
Johnson Co; my father and mother met at church where they both sang in the
choir. They had known each other about a year, when they were married in a
little chapel close to grandfather Hills [sic] farm: by Rev. D. I. Smith who
married me around 16 years (maybe not quite) later.

Dad and mother Frances Leah Hill were married in the summer or spring of 1882.
I was born in 1884.

My mother was born March 25 1862. Married when she was 20 years old; so it
was probably in 1882 when they married.

Was borned [sic] in Cass Co. Tex where her father [w]as sheriff there 4 years,
before he bought the farm in Ellis, Hill, and Johnson: as the 3 counties
cornered on the farm. He paid taxes in the 3 counties.

[This line added in a different hand] Written by Blanche Williams

In Blanche's handwriting, scanned by Helen Lopez
Received from Marion Butch Mixon 9 July 2009

Transcribed by Orville Boyd Jenkins 10 July 2009
I have tried to keep the spelling, paragraphing and punctuation the same as
the original.

The note was written on the back side of a two-hole-punched half-size page of
loose-leaf notebook paper.
======================

Note that her dates are one year off from the Williams genealogy source. It
appears that the Williams dates are correct, and for some reason Blanche has
remembered them differently. Notable is her mother's birth date, on which she
bases an estimate of the year her parents married. The dates in the Williams
genealogy will match Blanche's report that her mother married at the age of
20. This makes Frances Leah Hill born in 1863 and the couple married in
September 1883, which is after Frances' 20th birthday in March 1883.

Blanche reports her father born in 1861 instead of 1862 as the Williams
genealogy says. She also names the place of birth as Dyersburg, rather than
the nearby town/city of Newbern, as reported by the Williams info. Seeing the
geographical and demographical setup, my suspicion is that they lived in the
rural community of Dyersburg, but he was born in the nearby city of Newbern.

I later got a copy of the document.

Forrest and Fannie Brinkley with their first two children are recorded as a
family in the in 1910, in the census for Weatherford, in Parker County, Texas.

Forrest's birth date in the WWI registration card is a year earlier than that
commonly reported by the family. The date of birth on his death certificate,
reported by the informant, Forrest's daughter Mrs Urban Morris, is 2 Feb 1887.

Note that here the middle initial of Fannie is reported as T, while family
sources have it as C. The birthplace of Fannie's father is now reported as
Mississippi.

In 1930, Forrest's father Andrew W is living with Forrest and Fannie. Forrest
is listed this time as Lee.

I find it interesting that in 1930, the family is back at the same address
where they were reported in 1910, but in 1920, they had a different address.
The daughter listed as Lucile matches Myrtle L in 1920. We can deduce that
she was named Myrtle Lucile. Leora is out of the house, likely married, at
age 19.

The daughter is erproted again as Myrtle L in teh 1940 census.

Robert here is reported as born in 1876. Marion and I have been working on
this Brinkley family in October 2009, and Marion finally found them in the
1870 census. Family information knows of the Robert C Brinkley born in 1876.
But we discovered that the 1870 census shows another Robert born in 1868. He
is reported as 2 years old at that time. This census reports a second son
George as expected. The census reports that George was born in January 1870
and is 5 months old.

Family information reports the death of James' first wife Margaret (Maggie)
Burton in 1877. Family sources report the death of Maggie was in Newbern,
Tennessee, where they had been living earlier. Yet censuses and family
sources report the next two children, James M and Robert C, were born in
Arkansas in 1872 and 1876 respectively.

We have not yet found the public documentation for Maggie's death.
Information from Helen Brinkley Lopez tells us that James Anderson Brinkley
married his brother's widow Martha Garrison after they had moved to Texas.
This information was reported to me by Marion Mixon.

There are some discrepancies in this memorial record. The date of birth has
the year 1877, instead of the year 1872. Did Ms misread the date, taking the
2 of 1882 as a 7 to get 1877? should be 1872]. The date of death given is
Oct. 1, 1954, while several family genealogies report the date of death as 29
September 1954 (apparently from family sources, since they include other
details like James' middle name, though otherwise undocumented). Was 1
October 1954 the date of the burial? There is no photo of the gravestone on
this memorial for us to compare.
