Genealogies tell us John H Brinkley's parents were William Brinkley and Fortuna Howell, who were marreid in North Carolina. A descendant of John Brinkley, Bill Alexander, has compiled a detailed genealogy of his Brinkley ancestors. In that genealogy, he reports the name of this John Brinkley as John Anderson Brinkley. Other sources, however, family and public, report him as John H Brinkley. The middle name of his son James was Anderson. The North Carolina record of John's marriage to Jane Parrish (sometimes spelled Parish) reports John as John H Brinkley. The marriage took place in Granville County, North Carolina. This child's name looks like Rabie or Raby in all the censuses. It is found as Robie on one or two genealogies. In the Social Security Death Index the name is Rabie Brinkley. Several genealogies just copy names they have found from one or more censuses, including a mistranscription of the name of one of Rabie's brothers Elmer. The following genealogy, still, provides some additional information that seems to come from family sources, like Rabie's middle name of Lee. This genealogy lacks Rabie's brother James Page Brinkley. Genealogies report that the place of his birth was Walters, later to be in Cotton County, Oklahoma, formed in 1912 out of Comanche County. This was part of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation that was opened up for white settlement in 1906. this appears to be when James and Etta Brinkley moved up from Texas. Walters was on the Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which connected Waurika and Lawton. The following explains briefly the history of the area. "In 1855 a Choctaw-Chickasaw agreement held that they would lease a part of their land, to the United States for the Wichita and other Plains tribes. After the 1867 Medicine Lodge Treaty the area became part of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation. Cotton County's eastern portion opened to non-Indian settlement in the 1901 Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Opening, which distributed land by a lottery system. In 1906 settlers claimed the remainder of the county's land when the Big Pasture, grazing land reserved for Kiowa-Comanche and Wichita-Caddo livestock (with many acres leased to white ranchers), became available through a sealed bid process. The federal government platted five townsites for the Big Pasture opening, Randlett, Eschiti, Ahpeatone, Quanah, and Isadore, with the latter two in present Tillman County. Randlett is the only original town still incorporated. Other incorporated Cotton County towns are Devol, Temple, and Walters." -- "COTTON COUNTY," Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture, Oklahoma Historical Society, http://digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia/entries/C/CO067.html 1910 Federal Census, Comanche County, Oklahoma, 15 April, Walters, District 65, page 2B, Hse/Fam #46 Brinkley, James Head M W 38 Married 15 yrs AR TN TN Laborer Rents Brinkley, Etta Wife F W 31 Married 15 yrs 4 children/4 living TX TN TN Brinkley, Rabie Son M W 3 Single OK AR TX U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942 Rabie Lee Brinkley Birth Date 29 Sept 1907 Walter [Cotton County], Oklahoma Residence Wilton, Little River County, Arkansas Age 33 Contact Mrs Anna May Brinkley (wife), Wilton, LR, Oklahoma Employer W E Kinsworthy, Wilton, LR, Oklahoma (back) 5' 10" 145 lbs Brown Eyes, Brown Hair, Dark Complexion Scar edge of hair, over right eye Registered [no date reported] Ashdown, Little River County, Arkansas 1920 Federal Census, Little River, Arkansas, 6 January, Lick Creek, District 34, page 3B, Hse #51, Fam #58 Brinkley, Jim M Head Rents M W 47 AR TN TN Farmer Brinkley, Etta S Wife F W 42 GA GA GA Brinkley, Raby Son M W 13 Single OK AR GA Laborer 1930 Federal Census, Little River County, Arkansas, 22 April, Lick Creek Township, District 16, page 2B, Hse #35, Fam #36 Brinkley, J M Head Rents M W 58 First Married at age 23 TX TX TX Farmer [b abt 1872] Brinkley, Etta Mother F W 49 Married at age 20 AR TN TN [b abt 1881] Brinkley, Raby Son M W 21 Single OK AR GA [b abt March 1909] Arkansas Marriage Index, 1933-1939 Volume 0001, Certificate #14095 Rabie L Brinkley Gender: Male Spouse Annie M Tyson License 14 Sep 1935 Little River County 1940 Federal Census, Little River County, Arkansas, [no day] April, Wilton, District 41-6, page 2A, Hse #32, Rents $5 Brinkley, R L Head M W 33 Grade 8 b Okla parents b Ark Tex same place in 1935 Salesman, Retail Liquor Brinkley, Annie Mae Wife F W 26 Grade H1 b Ark same place in 1935 Brinkley, Betty Sue Dau F W 4 Grade 0 b Ark Brinkley, Rabie Lane Son M W 2 Grade 0 b Ark Brinkley, Etta Carolyn Dau F W 7mos Grade 0 b Ark Social Security Death Index Rabie Brinkley Born 29 Sep 1907 Died Nov 1982 Last Residence Wilton, Little River, Arkansas 71865 SSN 429-16-1169 issued Arkansas (Before 1951) --------------- Rabie Lee Brinkley Birth Sep 29, 1907 Comanche County, Oklahoma Death Nov 26, 1982 Wilton, Little River County, Arkansas Parents: James Matthew Brinkley (1873 - 1954) Etta Starnes Brinkley (1877 - 1938) Spouse Annie Mae Tyson Brinkley (1914 - 1988) Children: Rabie Lane Brinkley (1937 - 2004) James William Brinkley (1944 - ____) Siblings: William Elmer Brinkley (1900 - 1946) Lonza Zelma Brinkley McCown (1900 - 1994) Burial Oak Hill Cemetery, Little River County, Arkansas Created by J R Hinton Apr 15, 2015 -- Find A Grave Memorial #145064856, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=145064856 ---------------

Reuben Cole married again about 1922. Information on the birth of their first child indicates they were still living near Westover in Baylor County. Their son Jerold Lee Brinkley, was born 15 June 1923. But he lived less than two years. The Westover Cemetery transcription reports the death date on his grave is January 10 1925. (Since the census date is 1 April, this means she was already 28 by 1 April.) This would mean she was married about 1925, yet her first child with Reuben was born in mid 1923. (I am assuming they were married at the time of Jerold's birth, which seems to be the case. I have not yet found the marriage information as of 28 August 2009.) Family sources, reported in the genealogy of Marion Mixon, report her date of birth as 5 Aug 1902. This would mean that she would not have been 28 until August 1930. But this census is almost 5 months before that. If she was first married at age 24, on the other hand, she would have been married in about 1926, still well after the birth and death of Jerold, and even too late for the birth date of her first daughter Kathaleen in February 1926. So I cannot account for this. The birth of Kathaleen, according to this census, was before 1 January 1926. The Texas Birth Index, however reports she was born on 19 February 1926. So her age of 26 is not as of the census date, but has been rounded up to the next birthday, about 50 days later. So it appears they were not very precise on their dates and ages. Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997 Kathaleen Brinkley Birth 19 Feb 1926 Parker County Father Reuben Cole Brinkley Mother Vera Pearl Russell This record, as well as the census, tells us that at some time after the death of Jerold, Reuben and Vera moved back to Parker County. Robert is a 2-year old in the 1870 census in Dyer County, Tennessee. There was some confusion in trying to find the documentation for the children in this family and reconciling that with family information. There was a Robert C Brinkley documented in later censuses matching family information on a Robert Brinkley born in 1876. He is 4 years old in 1880. This Robert C is documented as R C Brinkley in the 1900 census in Johnson County, Texas, where we know Brinkley family members moved. James Anderson married his second wife Martha Garrison in Johnson County. My cousin and coresearcher Marion Mixon suggests: "The Robert listed born 1868 is a different one than the one born in 1876 and perhaps died, then the other Robert in the 1880 census with the 1876 birth was named after him. Family records, which I have [contain] no documentation other than census and what others have, shows Maggie died in 1877." -- Marion Mixon, Personal email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 6 October 2009 We have not found any of this family in the 1860 census to confirm any of the missing early details. The first Robert, reported here in the 1870 census, must have died between 1871 and 1876, if the later child Robert C was named for him. Robert probably in Arkansas, The nest child, George, was born in 1870 in Dyer County, Tennessee, as Robert was. The next child, James Matthew, was born in Green county, Arkansas. The second Robert was Robert Clarence, born in 1876, also in Arkansas. Robert Clarence married and moved to Walters in Cotton County, Oklahoma. It appears that at the time Robert C died, they actually were living in the part of Walters that is in Comanche County. Robert Clarence was buried in the Walters Cemetery in Cotton County, Oklahoma. 1870 Federal Census, Dyer County, Tennessee, 21 July, Civil District 6, Page 33 (scan 99), Hse/Fam #241 James Brinkly 24 M Farmer b Tennessee Maggie Brinkly 22 F b Tennessee Robt Brinkly 2 M born Tennessee
