them.

Kaufman County, Texas, marriage records record the marriage of Isaac Jefferson

-- Kaufman County Marriage Certificates, Bk 1,
http://www.txgenweb5.org/txkaufman/marriages/marrcerb.htm?

In his Holden genealogy, S H Norton provides more detail about Isaac and his
wives.

Isaac Jefferson "Jeff" Briscoe
Birth 16 Jun 1832 in Greene [County], Missouri
Death 1919 in Harmony, Parker, Texas
Parents Isaac Briscoe 1788-1864, Hester Kyle 1796-1867
Marriage 3 Jun 1854 Kaufmann County, Texas to Edna H Biggs
Residence Moved to Parker County TX 1857
Marriage 1866 to Mary Jane Osborne Kincaide

-- Holden,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9892787/person/-727382842?ssrc=&ftm=1

It looks like the marriage was actually in 1865, since in the June 1870 census
their first child Isaac is already 4 years old. It appeared that Isaac was
the son of Mary Jane rather than Edna, but this is uncertain. So perhaps Edna
died in childbirth with Isaac in 1866 and I J married Mary Jane the same year.
Norton actually reports the birth of Isaac in 1865 as a son of Mary Jane, even
though the date he reports for the marriage is 1866. I would think this is an
error, given the era and the situation.

Isaac Thomas Briscoe
Birth 23 Jun 1865 in Parker, Texas
Death 11 Feb 1914 in Vernon, Wilbarger, Texas
Parents Isaac Jefferson "Jeff" Briscoe 1832-1919
Mary Jane Osborne Kincaide 1825-1876

The 1880 census indicates that Mary Jane has died. The last child here is 3
years old, indicating she was born before June 1877. So until I find some
further records, we can conclude that Mary Jane died between 1877 and 1880.
The entry for this last child, a daughter, looks like A E, but is actually
Alice Azalee.

Briscoe, G W At Home W M 12 TX MO TN [b abt 1868]
Briscoe, A E (A A?) W F 8 TX MO TN [b abt 1872]

The age of this J J Briscoe matches Isaac Jefferson, and the children in the
family match. But as in 1870 has JJ rather than IJ. Also now the birth state
is reported as Texas, rather than as Missouri like other censuses for I J.
However, the birthplace of the father of the children is correctly reported as
Missouri.

I note also that the enumerator listed Texas as the place of birth only by
using a ditto, following the previous entry of several children of the
previous family born in Texas. He likewise placed a ditto for the
relationship, indicating "J J" was a son! Even though he is the first entry
for a new household and family. This seems to account for the wrong birth
state, as an enumerator error.

The 1900 census records I J and his 3rd wife Hattie R Price in Parker County,
Texas.

though most members of the family spell it Briscoe.

Printed in the Daily Herald of Weatherford, Texas
Found in the Weatherford Public Library

I.J. Brisco, age 87 years, died at his home in the Harmony community Monday
afternoon [2 June 1919] at 5:30 o'clock. His death was very sudden and was a
severe shock to the family. He had been in good health until a few days ago,
when he complained of feeling badly, but was suddenly stricken Monday
afternoon and death followed in a few minutes.

Mr. Brisco was one of the pioneers of Parker county. He was born in Missouri
and came to Texas with his parents, who settled in Eastern Texas. In 1850 he
came to Parker county and settled in the Harmony community. In 1866 he
improved the home place where he continuously resided until his death.

Mr. Brisco was a prominent member of the Baptist church and during his younger
days was a very active member. He was also active in politics for a private
citizen, being a life long Democrat and a prohibitionist. In the early days
he was a member of the scouting parties and was prominent in the fights
against the Indians. During the Civil War he served as a wagoner in the
Southern army and entered the service with the commencement of hostilities.

Deceased is survived by his wife and seven children: Mrs. J. Holden, J.T. and
R.W. Brisco, of Altus, OK; Mrs. W.J. Seay, Davidson, OK; Mrs. H.A. Wooley,

Another genealogy reports his place of death and burial as Caddo Mills, Hunt
County, Texas. He is buried there in the Oddfellows Cemetery. This source
reports the same death date as found on his grave.

Isaac Newton Briscoe

Some genealogies report that Isaac Newton Briscoe who was the son of James R
Briscoe and born in 1843 had a son also names Isaac Newton, born in 1856. But
this is too young for his to be his son. Some genealogies report the later
birth date for the son of James Runnels Briscoe. But his date is on the Civil
War Roster and his grave, so the son of James Runnels was born in 1843, not
1856. No documentation or explanation is provided on these genealogies, so
there is not much way to evaluate their validity.

One genealogy with some good information about the Briscoes reports that the
younger Isaac Newton Briscoe died in the town Y, in Somme, France, but does
not have a date. He would have been about 60 at the time of the World War I,
so it does not seem reasonable he was in France related to the war.

-- Mead/Cox Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3973148/person/-1666924662

Note the difference of wives for James R and mothers for Isaac Newton. These
are reported as two wives of James R. One genealogy has 4 wives for James
Runnels Briscoe! It appears that one of two things has happened. James R had
a son with each of these wives and named them the same. The compilers of the
genealogists have confused two similar Briscoe families. I see that birth
places and dates in Texas and in Missouri are variously reported for the
different Isaac Newton Briscoes with different birth dates. I am following
public records where these occur and continue looking for more of this sort of
information to clarify the Briscoe story.

I found one genealogy which had no dates, but did provide some missing names.
No other genealogy I had seen had the name of Isaac Newton Briscoe, other than
Mary C, which appears in the cemetery listing. This genealogy gives her full
name as Mary Caruthers Mattox.

While this census reports Ike (Isaac) born in December 1853, at least two
family genealogies report he was born 11 May 1856, a great discrepancy.
Neither genealogy says where it got that date. One would assume it came from
family sources. But you will see that Ike's age in 1910 matches that reported
in 1900.

This source reports that James' son Isaac died in France, but does not report
the date. Thjis seems to be an error. The location in France does not seem
to fit with other information we have about Ike. He would have been about 66
when he died. I have found no information explaining why he would have been
in France. This was two years after the end of WWI.

The enumerator got confused somehow. The birthplace of parents for the

There are several Briscoes buried in the Hess Cemetery, including Isaac's son
Daniel Jefferson Briscoe and members of his family. Isaac's wife is not
buried here. I discovered this set of records in the Hess Cemetery only in
December 2010, thanks to a fellow researcher Wanda Cox in Weatherford, Texas.
The details of the Texas and Oklahoma records for Isaac Thomas indicates that
these other Briscoes are part of our Briscoe family as well. The Hess

------------
Llano County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of
Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 19,301. Its county seat is
Llano, and the county is named for the Llano River.

In 1869, pioneer rancher John Wesley Snyder led a cattle drive from Llano
County along the Chisholm Trail to Abilene, Kansas.

In the 1870s, a pioneer community known as Baby Head existed in Llano County.
According to local legend, a small child was killed by Native Americans, and
her remains were left on a hill called Baby Head Mountain. Hence Jodie May
McKneely (died January 1, 1884) originated the Baby Head Cemetery. The
community no longer exists.

Francis Briscoe

I'm looking for information on Francis M Briscoe and came across the Source
Citation for the 1910 Federal Census, Tillman County, OK in your tree where
there's a transcript that states she was married to Edmond W Briscoe but says
he's her 2nd husband. I believe, from what I have heard, this is true.
Although I cannot find anything anywhere else to prove it. No prior marriage
license, newspaper articles, death certificate.

I heard from my mom, who would have been her granddaughter, that her first
husband was shot. Interesting, but I can't find anything on that and really
not much on her. I know that marriage produced a son, Herman, who went by
Briscoe (1881-1915). I have proof the last name was Johnson from a list of
deaths in my grandfather wrote in his Bible. My grandfather was James Lester
Briscoe (1892-1972) from her 2nd marriage.

In 1920, I found James L Briscoe in Montana, married to Amanda Carpenter, in a
household with their parents and working a farm there. The Carpenters are
from Iowa, where Amanda was born. We can tell from the birthplace of the
children that they married in Oklahoma, probably about 1911. Ilene was born
about 1911 or 1912. James and Amanda later moved back to Iowa.

There is an amazing duplication of James and Amanda's family enumeration in
the 1920 census. Earlier in the month of January 1920, they had already been
registered in the census, while they were still in Frederick, Oklahoma, where
her parents were living at the time of the 1910 census. They had moved from
Oklahoma to Montana sometime before 1917, since Carmen was reported as 2 years
8 months in the Oklahoma census.

Their next child Helen was also born in Montana in July 1920. Perhaps they
were on a visit back to Oklahoma and just happened to get enumerated a second
time. But they are in their own household, according to the listing. So I do
not have a satisfactory explanation for this interesting situation.

Note also the difference in age reported for Carmen in the two census records.
If the Montana record is correct (3 yrs 7 months) then she was born in 1916.
This conflicts with the date of death (1917) on her gravestone. Given the
date on the grave, I would declare the Oklahoma report of age 2 yrs 8months to
be the correct one. The age reported in 1930 matches birth in 1917.

Later records I found indicate that Helen is the daughter of James and Amanda
who was born in July 1920. She is buried in Concord Cemetery, Contra Costa
County, California, as they are. In the 1940 census, she is living in her
parents' home, but is working as a stenographer.

Notes for James Runnels BRISCOE

One source reports that James' son named Isaac Newton Briscoe was born in 1856.
Some others report this also. But this is an error, based on other records
and reports.

James Runnnels Briscoe
Birth 1820 in Hawkins County, TN, Death 08 Nov 1863
Parents Isaac BRISCOE 1788-1864, Hester Kyle 1796-1867
Son Isaac Newton BRISCOE, Birth 11 May 1856, Death in Y [Somme, France]
-- Mead/Cox Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3973148/person/-1666924662

This source reports that James' son Isaac died in France, but does not report
the date. But the location in France does not seem to fit with other
information we have about him. He would have been about 66 when he died. I
have found no information explaining why he would have been in France. James
died in Austin, Conway County, Arkansas in 8 November 1863.

There are discrepancies in the birth date and probably the confusion of two
different Isaac Newton Briscoes. Public records, including cemetery
gravestones, report that James' son named Isaac Newton was born in 1843 and
died in 1920. One genealogy reported that he had another son of the same name
with a second wife. One even reported that he had two sons named the same
with the same wife.

When I found censuses, I discovered what the problem was. Several genealogies
have confused have confused a John Runnels Briscoe and a James Runnels
Briscoe, who were brothers, sons of Isaac Briscoe. They share the same middle
name and they both had a son named Isaac Newton Briscoe. Rebecca Wray was
married to John, while Sarah Jane Walton was married to James. According to
Judy, compiler of the Lovett-Seymour-Edelman Genealogy, John's son I N was
called Newt, while James' son went by Ike.

1850 Federal Census, Kaufman County, Texas, 16 October, page 263, Hse #334,
Fam #335
James R Briscoe 25 M Farmer $320 Real Estate b Tennessee [b abt 1825]
Sarah Briscoe 15 F b Arkansas [b abt 1835]
Thomas J Briscoe 10mos M b Texas [b abt November 1849]

Note that the age given here in the census would make James born in abt 1925,
the year his brother Robert was born. But the year reported by family
genealogies is 1820, which would make James only 20 at the time of this
census.

The Lovett genealogy provides birth and death information for all James'
children.
