Jean/John Burel came from France to Philadelphia, where he married a woman said to be an Acadian, though her name was Patience Hannah Bird. She was an English resident of what had previously been the French region of Acadia, but became Nova Scotia. The name of the region around Port Royal where she grew up was still called Acadia under the British. Jean Baptiste Burel was a medical doctor in the French forces allied with the American Revolutionary forces in the Revolutionary War. James P Burrell Birth 1790 Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania Death Jun. 9, 1863 Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi James P. Burrell was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1790 to Dr. Jean (John) Baptiste Elzeard Burel and Patience Hannah Bird. His father was a French immigrant and his mother was an Acadian. His family moved to Union, Union County, South Carolina in the 1800s. -- Find A Grave Memorial #18791781, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18791781 ------------------- While still living in Pennsylvania, Dr. Burel and Patience Bird Burel had six children, all born in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These children were: Louis Burrell, b. June 25, 1786; James P. Burrell, b. about 1790; Elizabeth "Betsy" Burrell, b. about 1792; John Honore Burell, b. about 1794; Thomas H. Burrell, b. about 1800; Margaret Epps Burrell, b. Aug. 1, 1804. By 1812, Dr. Burel, who had now anglicized his name to John Burel, had moved his family to Union County, South Carolina, where they settled in Goshen Hill. Little is known about why and how the family migrated to South Carolina, but like so many others during the early 1800's, John Burel may have gone to South Carolina to claim land opened up by the U. S. government for settlement. Union County, South Carolina deed records show that John Burel was already in the county on December 2, 1812 when he sold a tract of land on the Enoree River to James Flanagan of Newberry County. Patience Hannah Burel, wife of John, released her dower rights to the land on the same day. (Union County Deed Book "N," p.94 In 1829, Randolph Jenkins, the son of Randolph ... was appointed the administrator of the estate of John Burel. ... Although Dr. Burel's exact date of death and place of burial is unknown, he likely died in 1829 and was buried in Union County, South Carolina. -- Janice Tracy, Mississippi Memories, http://mymississippimemories.blogspot.com/2009/03/burel-family-pennsylvaniaunion-county.html ------------------- "Patience Bird and Dr. Jean (John) Burel were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1785, and continued to live in the Germantown area of Philadelphia until for almost twenty years." -- Janice Tracy, Cemeteries of Dancing Rabbit Creek, http://cemeteriesofdancingrabbitcreek.blogspot.com/2009/03/burrell-family-members-buried-in.html "My name is Bruce Harrington. I married Sally Stauch, the daugher of Jack Stauch and Bess Burrell. Her dad was Oliver Calhoon Burrell and that lineage goes back to Jean-Baptist Elzeard Burel, whom I see you have documented somewhat on Geneanet. I have a scanned copy of a book about the Burel ancestry and decendents that I got from Bess before she died last year. (She and Jack lived with us in Houston during their last few years.) It was compiled by Wylodean Burrell Edwards in the late 1980's." -- Bruce Harrington, Genenet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 20 January 2018 "Dr. John's grave has been located and a marker has placed. It is located in Union County, SC on the Randolph Jenkins place where he resided. Original markers of Dr. John and Patience are in disrepair and few letters can barely be made out." -- Anonymous comment on a blog, Mississippi Memories, September 22, 2013, http://mymississippimemories.blogspot.com/2009/03/burel-family-pennsylvaniaunion-county.html A photo of the new grave marker with life story details on the family is attached to this profile on Ancestry.com and to his memorial on Find a Grave. Grave Marker of Dr Jean Baptiste Elzear Burel, Randolph Jenkins Farm, Union County, South Carolina November 26, 1757 born in Ollioules, near Toulan, France... February 22, 1785 he and Patience Hanna Bird were marreid in Philadelphia The 1790 census reported them at Goshen Hill ------------------- Dr Jean Baptist Elzeard "John" Burel Birth Nov 26, 1757 Ollioules, Departement du Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France Death 1829 Goshen Hill, Union County, South Carolina Death date is estimated or reported in a range from 1825 to 1829. His will was probated in 1829. (A few present the middle name as Elezard, which makes more sense phonetically, but most family and historical sources spell it Elzeard) The family name is spelled Burelle in his marriage record. He was a medical doctor, was born in France and came to the US, settling at first in Philadelphia. He was a medical officer in the French forces allied to the American Revolutionary forces, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorkton. He met and married Patience Hanna Bird in Philadelphia on 22 February 1785. All 6 of their children were born in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They moved to Goshen Hill, Union District, South Carolina, about 1806 or so. An 1812 land transaction shows he had been there long enough already that he is selling a tract of land. He and his wife were buried on the farm where they lived, which was owned by their daughter-in-law's father, Randel Randolph Jenkins. And in 1829, his will was probated by his designated administrator, Randolph Jenkins, son of Randolph Randel. This would indicate he may have died in 1829. But some report his death was in 1825. One genealogy actually reports an exact date of 24 March 1825. But no documentation is provided. The new marker placed in 2006 reports he died in March 1828. We are told his original grave marker is so worn that the dates are unreadable, according to an anonymous comment on the placing of the new marker. John's middle name comes to us through family sources, reported in several genealogies. But I have seen no documentation. No death or burial record has been found. A couple of undocumented genealogies report his wife was Vashti or Vasti Darby. It is interesting that his wife had this well-known name from India. "John Honore Burel married Vasti Darby, born about 1808, and John died on September 16, 1844 in Abbeville, South Carolina. Burel researchers have written that Vasti Darby may have been the illegitimate daughter of Deborah Darby Burel's sister, who may have been renting a house owned by Samuel Jenkins, who lived nearby." -- My Mississippi Memories, http://mymississippimemories.blogspot.com/2009/03/burel-family-pennsylvaniaunion-county.html
