M." Burke, Sr Birth 1843 Cocke County, Tennessee Death 1905 Big Sandy, Upshur County, Texas F.M. and brothers Willam Newton and Pleasant Joseph joined the confederacy in Newport, Cocke County TN in October of 1862. Immediately after being mustered into Confederate service they were ordered to Mississippi. Their first action of any consequence was at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou and Chickaaw Bluffs, outside Vicksburg, December 6-29, 1862. Vaughn's Brigade held the abattis on the left wing of the defenses. Reports state that the Union attack was met with firmness by be East Tennesseans. The regiment suffered only four casualties. In this battle the Federals suffered heavy losses. The next engagement was at Big Black River, May 17, 1863. Their unit was holding a hastily thrown-up line of earthworks on the left of the brigade, when it was attacked in overwhelming strength by General Osterhaus's Division of the Federal Army. The regimental colors were seized and of about 400 men who responded for duty on the morning of the 17th, only 112 were marched back to Vicksburg that evening. For the next 48 days and nights "without shelter, and with less than half rations of poor quality, the men literally ate, slept and fought in the trenches. The mortality from exposure and insufficient food was great-in fact, much greater than the casualties in battle." Along with the rest of the brigade, the regiment was surrendered on July 4, 1863. Although almost immediately paroled, the men captured at Vicksburg were not declared exchanged until June 27, 1864, and some of those captured at Big Black were not released until the spring of 1865. F.M. was held as a prisoner in Alton Illinois. W.N. and P.J. were held at Fort Delaware. Afer the Civil War F.M. moved briefly to Arkansas to be near family and then settled in Van Zandt County Texas. He was married twice. First, in Arkansas, to Diannah Quenette Gailer of Mississippi and secondly to Nora Wilson in Big Sandy TX. His death date is an estimate. ----------------- The Burkes were a strong family in Cocke County, Tennessee, along with the Mantooths, his mother's family. They may have had some interaction with another primary family line in this genealogy, my mother's family, the Gregorys. Dock Gregory and his related Gregorys and his wife's lineage of Strange were old families in this area. John went to Arkansas County, Arkansas, while the Gregorys and some of the Stranges went to north Texas, then Indian Territory. I have not discovered a marriage link between the Gregorys or Stranges and the Burkes, in Cocke or neighboring Jefferson County. Some of John's children and Dock Gregory's children were born in Newport, the county seat of Cocke County, near the border line with Jefferson County, where many of the Stranges and Gregorys lived. Dock Gregory's farm was apparently on the Jefferson side near the county line. -- Orville Boyd Jenkins ----------------- 1850 Federal Census, Cocke County, Tennessee, 4 September, p 735 (scan 368), Hse/Fam #343 John Burke 35 M Farmer No Real Estate Value Rptd b Tenn [b abt 1815] Betsy Burke 31 F b Tenn [b abt 1819] - page 736 - William N Burke 11 F b Tenn [b abt 1839] Martha Burke 9 M b Tenn [b abt 1841] Francis Burke 7 M b Tenn [b abt 1843] Nancy Burke 5 F b Tenn [b abt Jan 1845] Sarah Burke 4 F b Tenn [b abt 1846] Mary Burke 1 F b Tenn [b abt 1849] 1860 Federal Census, Cocke County, Tennessee, 24 July, P O Taylersburg, District 8, page 146, Hse/Fam #1061 John Burk [sic] 46 M NO Occup Stated $2000 Real Estate $975 Personal born SC Elizabeth Burk 42 F born TN Martha Burk 20 F born TN Marion Burk 17 M Laborer born TN Nancy Burk 15 F born TN Sarah Burk 13 F born TN Mary Burk 11 F born TN John M Burk 9 M born TN Green W Burk 7 M born TN Susanah Burk 4 F born TN Julia Burk 2 F born TN 1870 Federal Census, Cocke County, Tennessee, 24 August, Judicial District 8, PO Newport, page 11 (scan 443), Hse/Fam #80 Burk [sic], John 56 M W Farmer $1500 Real Estate $200 Personal b Tenn Burk, Elizabeth 52 F W Keeping House born Tenn Burk, Marion 26 M W Farm Laborer born Tenn Burk, Mary E 21 F W Seamstress born Tenn Burk, John M 19 M W Farmer born Tenn Burk, Green W 17 M W Farm Laborer born Tenn Burk, Susan 14 F W born Tenn Burk, Julia 12 F W born Tenn Burk, Allen R 9 M W Farm Laborer born Tenn Burk, Sarah 21 F W Farm born Tenn Burk, Victoria 10mos F W born Tenn Francis Marion was away in Mississippi in the Civil War, and was captured at Vicksburg. Sarah appears to be their daughter, though by previous age reports, she should be 23 or 23, not 21., which is the same age reported here for Mary, who was born after her. From the order of the entries, it appears the baby Victoria is Sarah's daughter. Since both Sarah and Victoria have the last name Burk(e), it appears that Sarah bore Victoria out of wedlock, very unusual for that period. John moved his family to Arkansas County, Arkansas. Most members of the family are buried in the White River Chute Cemetery in DeLuce Township, Arkansas County. John has no grave there, as is the case with his wife Julia Elizabeth Lloyd, but his memorial by Ed Burke appears on Find a Grave. The memorial reports the death date, but burial information is unknown. -------------- John Burke Birth Oct 9, 1813 Tennessee Death Jan 2, 1894 Arkansas County, Arkansas Parents: Joseph Burke (1761 - 1856) Mary Mantooth Burke (1788 - 1856) Spouse Julia Elizabeth Lloyd Burke (1819 - 1888) Children: Pleasant Joseph Burke (1837 - 1885) William Newton Burke (1839 - 1906) Francis Marion Burke (1843 - 1905) Green W Burke (1856 - 1900) Susan Burke West (1856 - 1925) Siblings: Rebecca Burke Ball (1805 - 1877) William Burke (1824 - 1895) Burial Body lost or destroyed Created by Ed Burke Mar 13, 2011 -- Find A Grave Memorial #66849207, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=66849207 --------------

Family Data Collection - Individual Records Ursula Burleson Spouse Nathaniel Self Father David Burleson Mother Ursula Weatherford Birth 1793 Anson Co, NC Marriage 1 October 1816 Rutherford Co, TN Family sources report her full name as Ursula Jane. I found her name in the 1950 census as Usley. Then in her marriage record from Rutherford County, North Carolina, I found it the same, Usley Burleson. In the 1850 census, there were three people on the same page with this name or similar. In two cases it is written Ulsey, in her case Usley, as in her marriage record. Since we know her full name was Ursula Jane, this appears to be a nickname for Ursula. Elsewhere she is reported as Ursula or Jane. And Pleasant named one of his daughters Ursula Jane. This variation in the nickname form of the name makes one wonder if it should have been Ulsey, rather than Usley, on her marriage record and 1850 census record.
