In the 1900 census no children are in their household but they have been married 12 years. This census reports Callie's birthday as May 1872, but the year of death on her grave is 1871. This is a common conflict in the 1900 census birth dates. The grave has only the year of death. Lacking no other sources, I usually favor the grave in these cases. This census reports Green's birthday as Jan 1850, but he is not in the 1850 census. Further, the last child is his sister Nancy, who is reported as only 11 months old, So the later birthday of about 1854 makes sense. 1900 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 29 June, beat 4, District 10, Page 2B, House #354, Family #355 Burell, Green Head W M Jan 1850 50 Married 12 yrs MS SC SC Farmer Owns Farm Burell, Callie M Wife W F Mar 1872 [cf grave, 1871] 28 Married 12 yrs 0 children/0 living MS MS MS In 1920 6 nieces and nephews are living with an elderly Green and Callie. The memorial of James Peter Burrell lists Isabella as one of his chidlren. They are living among related Jenkins-Burrell families in Attala County, Mississippi. Isabella's husband John's identity is uncertain. He is reported by at least one genealogy as another son of Samuel M Jenkins, but approximate birth dates of other chidlren don't leave room for John's reported birth in 1825. 1850 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 5 September, page 105B, Hse/Fam #135 John Jenkins 25 M Farmer $0 Real Estate Value stated b SC [b abt 1825] Isabella Jenkins 27 F b SC [b abt 1822] The Sunday Post, Vicksburg, Mississipppi, "Info on Jenkins Family Shared," p B5, 10 July 1988 A long list of names are given with birth dates and some marriage dates. James P Burrell, Birth 1790 Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania Death [Jun. 9, 1863 Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi] [it seems like this date is for his son James Henry who was born in 1832. It is thus reported by genealogies. In 1863, James P would have been 73 years old, and surely did not fight at Vicksburg] Married Nancy Elizabeth Darby about 1815 They had 6 children: Mary, William Riley (1817 - 1894) John Berry Anne Elizabeth (1822 - 1849) Isabella Avilla, and James Henry -- Find A Grave Memorial #18791781, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18791781 1850 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 4 September, Township 12, Range 5E, page 104B, Hse/Fam #126 James Burell 60 M Farmer $110 Real Estate Value b SC [b abt 1790] Nancy Burell 60 F b SC [b abt 1790] James Burell 18 M b SC [b abt 1832] Lucinda Burell 20 F b MS [b abt 1830] Jane Burell 5 M b MS [b abt 1845] Elizabeth Burell 1mo M b MS [b abt July 1850] The sequence of the census listing looks like Lucinda is James Henry's wife. And Lucinda is the name of one of his two wives reported by some genealogies. But note that the first child under Lucinda, either Jamie or Jane (spelled Jame by the enumerator) is 5 years old. James Henry and Lucinda are too young to have a child 5 years old. The 1860 census is helpful here, because these two girls are still in the home of James and Nancy, but James Henry and his wife are not there. And this time the girls are given the surname of Jenkins. This helps us put them with the proper family line and maybe their parents. Further the baby in 1850 called Elizabeth is enumerated as Mary Jenkins in 1860. The characteristics of these two girls match pretty closely to be the children of James and Peter's daughter Ann Elizabeth Burell and her husband Samuel Jenkins. The oldest girl Jane would match their daughter Jane Elizabeth, whose birthday was October 1846. The younger one is younger than the last child of Sam and Ann Elizabeth. Ann Elizabeth died in childbirth with their daughter Mary Ann on 11 January 1949. But this is a problem since the youngest child in the 1950 census above is reported as only one month old, which would mean she was born in 1850 And the name Elizabeth for the baby does not fit what we now from other sources. Maybe the girls are from separate related families. At any rate we now know their surname is Jenkins and not Burell. 1860 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 20 October, Township 13, Range 5, PO Attalaville, page 233 (scan 493), Hse #1476, Fam #1618 James Burell 66 M Farming $100 Real Estate $300 Personal born South Carolina Cannot read or write Nancy Burell 65 F born South Carolina Cannot read or write Jane Jenkins 15 F born Georgia Mary Jenkins 11 F born Mississippi According to the following genealogy, Lucinda died a little over a year after the 1850 census. Confederate Military records for James lack his birth date. This may be one reason some researchers have confused him with his 73-year-old father in identifying his military burial place. "Although the exact date that James Burel and his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Darby, arrived in Mississippi is unknown, the U. S. Census of 1850 shows they were already living in Attala County. However, from some family information in genealogies, we get a couple of clues. A couple of genealogies report that one of James Henry's wives was Lucinda Myers. But genealogies report that Lucinda was born in 1826, which would mean she should be about 24 in this census. The identity of these two children is not clear. The first one (spelled Jame; maybe Jamie, or Jane?) was born when James Henry was about 13. So he would not be her father. The 5 year old matches pretty closely with the daughter of James Perter and Nancy's daughter Ann Elizabeth Burell, who married Samuel Joseph Jenkins. But the baby one is hard to account for. Ann Elizabeth died in childbirth with her last child Mary Ann Jenkins in January 1949. IN the 1860 census, the girls have the last name of Jenkins instead of Burell, making the case stronger for them as grandchildren of one of James and Nancy's daughters. In 1860, baby Elizabeth is called Mary, adding another complication. Also in 1860, Jane is reported as born in Georgia, rather than Mississippi as in 1850. Nancy is now listed as Elizabeth . 1860 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 20 October, Township 13, Range 5, PO Attalaville, page 233 (scan 493), Hse #1476, Fam #1618 James Burell 66 M Farming $100 Real Estate $300 Personal born South Carolina Cannot read or write Elizabeth Burell 65 F born South Carolina Cannot read or write Jane Jenkins 15 F born Georgia Mary Jenkins 11 F born Mississippi Next door is James' brother Thomas H Burell. 1860 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 20 October, Township 13, Range 5, PO Attalaville, page 233 (scan 493), Hse #1475, Fam #1617 Thomas H Burell 60 M Farming $0 Real Estate $200 Personal born South Carolina Cannot read or write Margaret A Burell 45 F born South Carolina Maria G Shoat 22 F born South Carolina Chas M C Burell 14 F born Georgia Sarah M Burell 11 F born Georgia James F Burell 7 M born Miss Frances Burell 3 M born Miss James Henry Burel Born in South Carolina in 1832 Father James P Burrell Mother Nancy Darby Born 1790.
