Notes for Walter Silas BURRELL

Walter Silas Burrell was enumerated under his second name in the 1900 census,
at age 8. His birth date was reported as June 1891, but the census date for
1900 was 1 June. So this matches. But in his 1918 draft registration, Silas
reported his birth date as 19 June 1890. If this was correct, he should have
been 9 years old on 1 June 1900. His grave has the year as 1892.

birthplace was Attala County, Mississippi. This is where he is enumerated in
the census. But he reports in both his draft registrations that he was born
in Goodman, Holmes County, Mississippi.

From a Burris Family newsletter dated July 1991:
"John Burris: The original John Burris of 1738 tombstone was found in 1975 in
Boxley, IN. The story is a farmer wanted to clear off his land for farming,
this also included the old cemetery property where John Burris was buried. The
tombstones had been thrown into a ditch. Phillip Cline and others brought suit
against the farmer to stop any further destruction, and restore the cemetery
to its original condition. The tombstones were then placed into the farmer's
basement awaiting the court's decision. The United States government has
installed a Revolutionary War Veterans stone for John Burris, in honor of his
service during the Revolutionary War...."

Burl Lawrence Burton, 89, of Fayetteville, AR, left his earthy journey on
Sunday, August 11, 2019 in Fayetteville. Many only knew him as “Peaches”.
He was the second child born to Lynn Sr. and Winifred Ellenburg Burton on
October 26, 1929 in Tinchor, Arkansas.

Burl retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 20 years. He was a 50+ year
member of the Masonic Lodge.

After returning home, he was in the furniture business and later sold to
Sam’s Club as a Bassett furniture representative, where he met the love of
his life, Virginia Witherspoon.

He played guitar and sang in bands while serving in the Air Force. He had a
passion for quail and turkey hunting and enjoyed many great friendships in
Nocona and Quanah, Texas where he had a bird lease for years.

Burl is preceded in death by his parents, Lynn Burton, Sr. and Winifred
Ellenburg Burton Kennedy; his first wife, Bettye Rutherford Burton; his son,
Doug Burton; and brother, Lynn Burton, Jr.

This genealogy reports that C A died in Dixie, Oklahoma. I cannot find any
town or settlement named Dixie in Oklahoma. The whole southeastern region was
originally called Little Dixie, and is still known by that name. This area is
basically the same as Choctaw Nation, and was opened to settlement by white
settlers from 1898. There is a Dixie Cemetery in Stephens County, which
borders Little Dixie on the west. I found an online registry, but it does not
have a burial listing for C A Burton, or anyone recognizable as part of his
immediate family.

Death Abt 1877 in Newbern, Dyer, Tennessee
Marriage 23 Sep 1866 Newbern, Dyer, Tennessee, to James Anderson Brinkley
-- Williams/Brinkley/Mason/Vaughn,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/49994/person/-2062686592?ftm=1

Here we see that family sources report the death of Maggie occurred in
Newbern, Tennessee, in about 1877. Yet family sources also report that two of
her children were born in Arkansas, in 1872 and 1876. The 1870 Dyer County,
Tennessee, census reports James M born in Tennessee, which makes sense, since
they are still in the county where they married and are still living. Yet
later censuses report both him and later brother Robert C (born 1876) as born
in Arkansas. This period of the family's life is confusing and family members
are searching for corroborating evidence to clarify and fill in the gaps.

Perhaps Maggie actually died in Arkansas, and was taken home for burial?

Robert C Brinkley appears to be a child of the same James and Maggie Brinkley
who earlier had a son named Robert, who must have died after the 1870 census
in Dyer County, Tennessee. It has been proposed that they named the later
Robert C after the lost child. We find Robert C in later censuses, married to
Beulah, living in Johnson County, Texas, where the family finally settled.

"Lewis Burwell II, grandfather of the builder of Carter’s Grove, built
Fairfield circa 1694. Lewis’ father, of the same name, patented the 2,350
acres on the south side of Carter Creek in 1648. Lewis Burwell II was a member
of the Governor’s Council, and he gained financially from his marriage to
Abigail Smith of York County, heiress of Council president Nathaniel Bacon
(the elder). Upon Lewis’ death in 1710, Fairfield passed to his son
Nathaniel, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert “King” Carter; and
upon Nathaniel’s death, the plantation passed to his son Lewis. This third
Lewis (1710-1752) was president of the Council and acting governor of
Virginia. His son, also named Lewis, sold the Fairfield tract to Col. Robert
Thruston in 1787. Thruston, his wife Frances Simmons Jones, and descendants
are buried in unmarked graves at Fairfield. A plat was drawn of the farm in
1847 when William A. Leavitt began to acquire Fairfield Plantation. When the
house burned in 1897, it was owned by the Elizabeth G. Booth estate. The
property returned to the Burwell family in 1930 when it was purchased by
Gerard Lambert."

----------------------
Mr. Howard Lamar Butcher
BORN June 16, 1946
DIED February 22, 2018
LOCATION Nesbit, Mississippi

Howard Lamar Butcher, 71, of Nesbit, Mississippi, passed away on February 22,
2018. He was born on June 16, 1946, in DeWitt, Arkansas.

He grew up in a small farming community and attended high school in St.
Charles near the banks of the White River. Those years allowed him to meet the
love of his life, Peggy Lou Horton, of Ethel, Arkansas, with whom he shared 51
years of love, marriage, family and service to many.

At the encouragement of his high school coach and life-long mentor, Dr. Kellar
Noggle, Howard earned his Certificate of Technical Education in Architectural
Drafting from the Pines Vo-Tech School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1966. After
job searching in nearby Little Rock and Louisiana, he landed a job in Memphis
with Ralph Jones, an architect who became a life-long friend that treated him
like the brother neither of them ever had. He stayed 20 years until he decided
to take the entrepreneurial plunge and open his own office in Southaven.
Howard loved designing custom-built homes and faithfully served the residents
of DeSoto County and beyond for 30 years.

Howard and Peggy made their home in the Colonial Hills subdivision of
Southaven, Mississippi and spent many happy and fulfilling years there. The
friendships and ministries they developed during those years were very dear to
him. His passion was in loving, giving, serving and praying for his family and
friends. He was an avid Razorback fan who loved watching his kids and
grandkids play sports. He was always up for a little hunting or fishing with
his boys as well as the good food that usually followed.

Howard took great pleasure in studying and sharing the truth found in God's
Word with others. He spent the majority of his adult life serving His Lord and
the church as deacon, Sunday School teacher, and on various building and
finance committees. Howard also ministered to many youth boys over his
lifetime both on and off the basketball court. He was even a one-time
songwriter and a poet. His silly humor and laughter, loving hugs, gentle
manner, humility, engaging demeanor, and heartfelt prayer support will be
greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Lamar Butcher and Alice Faye
Ingram. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lou Horton Butcher of Nesbit;
children, Leslie Carr (Phillip) of Water Valley, Cindy Lamb (Joe) of
Senatobia; Dick Butcher of Senatobia; and Dean Butcher of Olive Branch;
mother-in-law, Alice Horton of DeWitt; sister, Janette Poe of Little Rock;
brother-in-law, Charles Horton, Jr. (Dana) of DeWitt; grandchildren, Destiny
Smith (Daniel), Sean Lamb, Tressa Lamb, Hannah Burton (Ricks), Reid Butcher,
Emily Carr, Abby Butcher, Nathan Lamb, and Tate Butcher; great-grandchildren,
Carson Smith and Cohen Smith; nieces, Julie Caldwell (Joe) and Jessica Johnson
(Trevon); nephews, Neal Poe, Heath Horton and Warren Horton.

Let it be said that Howard loved and lived well. He also fought a good fight
against the cancer that invaded his body. We know that he is with our Lord
experiencing all the glories of heaven even now and look forward to seeing him
again one day.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 25th at Essex Funeral
Home. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00. Burial will follow in Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery.

On Monday, February 26, visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30pm at
Carriage Hills Baptist Church, 8352 Farmington Drive West in Southaven, MS. A
memorial service will commence at 6:30 with visitation resuming afterwards.

Memorials may be made to Love Community Baptist Church, P.O. Box 521,
Hernando, MS 3632.
