Notes for India G BUTLER

India is recorded in the 1880 census with her parents William H and India
Butler and her siblings in Prairie Township (Ethel area) of Arkansas County,
Arkansas.

1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 21 June, Prairie Township,

After a false trail for an India I Parker in that area, I found India Lacotts
(Lacott) with her first husband in DeWitt, Arkansas, in the 1900 census. In
the census record for the family below, Cecil is India's son, and Clarence is
the son of John's first wife Nora E (Maiden name Unknown).

1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 1 June, DeWitt, District 1,

A couple of genealogies report India Lacott as India Parker. But I notice
that the daughter of Richard is listed as India I Parker, rather than India A
Parker, as J W Porter's wife is listed. India I Parker was enumerated in
Ethel in the 1900 census, with a sister in their widowed father's home. This
was 6 years before she married J W (William James) Porter, as reported above.
John LaCotts' wife is India Butler.

I found the 1910 census before the 1900, and they seemed to represent the same
person. But then I found India in her father's home in 1910 also. So it is
uncertain. There are instances of multiple enumerations in this area in other
censuses. But she is reported as Single here, and India Lacotts is married to
J W Porter in the other, and it is her second marriage. Three genealogies
reprot that India and John Lacott (Oacotts) divorced in 1903, after which she
married J W (William James) Porter in 1904.

I also find that in genealogies that have India I Parker's husband he is
reported as George Allen, and they married in 1917 Phillips County, Arkansas
(across the river from Arkansas County).

One undocumented genealogy also reported her middle name as Irene. This seems
to be reporting that she was India Irene Parker, daughter of Richard Parker,
is not India A Lacott (or Lacotts) who married J W Porter. The weight of
other facts do not support this conclusion.

"Will, as he was called, already had a son and daughter from a previous
marriage before he married Maggie. Will and Maggie had no children together."
-- Shirley Rowland Mitchell, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, April 07, 2015

A matching marriage record is found in the Arkansas County records for J W
Porter and India (Butler) Lacott in 1904. This appears to be the same Will
Porter, though I have learned there was a J W Porter in DeWitt. The residence
here is reported as Ethel, and 1910 census confirms they are in Ethel among
our McSwains, Criswells, Butlers and other related families in this genealogy.

I note that the census reports that India has had 3 children, but only 2 are
living. Only her second son Cecil is reproted in the 1910 census. James and
India's first child together was Imogene (Emogene in the 1930 census, Emma J
in 1920), reported as age 8 in 1920. But it could be that India's child that
died was born after she married WIll, and died before this census.

There is a marriage record dated 8 years after the birth of Will's son William
E Porter in 1914. There is a marriage record in the Arkansas County records
for one J W Porter, India Butler's previous husband, and Annie McSwain, both
of Ethel. William James' SS record has his birth date as 19 March 1882, while
J W was reported of an age to be born about 1878. Reported ages vary wildly
in that era.

This record is so close otherwise and also in Ethel, this seems to be the same
person. It is likely McSwain was Annie's first married name. Her identity
has not been established. The marriage reported in the record below occurred
almost 8 years after the birth of Will's son Will E with his first wife in
1914.

Notes for James BUTLER

This line of Butlers, from which our relatives are descended in the United
States, goes back to Scotland, according to some researchers. We have not
been able to confirm a link.

I know from previous historical study that this line is related to the line in
Ireland, which shows up in this genealogy with a few individuals related to my
LeStrange family line. The Butlers of Scotland are a branch of the original
line the Norman Earldom of Ormond in Ireland.

The Butlers of Ireland served as the representatives and managers of the Irish
estates of the Crown of England after the Irish lands were claimed by the
Norman King of England.

Spotty and conflicting data makes it difficult to substantiate details, family
lines and even names of individuals. This is one of the lower-priority goals
of this family investigation.

The following information may be for this James Butler.

Notes for James 1st Earl Of Ormonde BUTLER

This line of Butlers are associated with Ireland. There were Butlers from the
same Norman lineage in England and Scotland. The Butlers in my genealogy,
related to the McSwains in Arkansas, descend from the Scottish Butlers. The
name was spelled in medieval items in various ways: Botiler and Bottiler were
two common forms.

The Irish Butlers were allied and intermarried with the DeBurgh family, who
also have some mixed associations with the Scottish royal family. The Anglo
(Norman)-Irish Earl of Ulster, Richard De Burgh, 2nd Earl, who had deposed
Brian O'Neil, the native Irish King of Ulster. Elizabeth DeBurgh, daughter
of Richard De Burgh, was married to Robert the Bruce (De Bruis), though the
Bruce was a valiant opponent of Edward I ("Longshanks") Plantagenet, Norman
King of England.

Robert Bruce's diplomatic opposition to Longshanks burst in to an outright war
for independence when he became King Robert I of Scotland from 1304 (till his
death in 1329). This pitted him politically against his father-in-law, a
loyal partisan of his benefactor King Edward Longshanks. Meanwhile his
brother Edward De Bruce became King of Ireland at the request of anti-Norman
Irish lords opposed to the Norman oppression of Edward I in the early 1300s.

Notes for James 2nd Earl Of Ormonde BUTLER

Though some sources are confused, it seems that James Butler, 2nd Earl of
Ormonde, was born in Kilkenny town, Kilkenny County, in Leinster Province.
Kilkenny town was the capital of the old Irish kingdom of Ossory.

"Irish CILL CHAINNIGH, city, municipal borough, and seat of County Kilkenny,
Ireland, on both banks of the River Nore. The ancient capital of the kingdom
of Ossory, Kilkenny in Norman times had two townships: Irishtown, which had
its charter from the bishops of Ossory, and Englishtown, established by
William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, which was raised to the status of a city in
1609. The two were united in 1843."
-- Encyclopaedia Britannica, Electronic, "Kilkenny,"
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/317741/Kilkenny

"Kilkenny is a popular tourist destination. In 2009 the City of Kilkenny
celebrated its 400th year since the granting of city status in 1609.[4]
Kilkenny's heritage is evident in the city and environs including the historic
buildings such as Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice's Cathedral and round tower,
Rothe House, Shee Alms House, Black Abbey, St. Mary's Cathedral, Kilkenny Town
Hall, St. Francis Abbey, Grace's Castle, and St. John's Priory. Kilkenny is
regarded for its culture with craft and design workshops, the Watergate
Theatre, public gardens and museums. Annual events include Kilkenny Art
Festival, the Cat Laughs comedy festival and music at the Rhythm and Roots
festival and the Source concert. It is a popular base to explore the
surrounding towns, villages and countryside. Controversy exists at the moment
around the Kilkenny Central Access Scheme which is a road proposed to be built
through the city centre."

James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond

James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond (4 October 1331 - 18 October 1382) was a

and 1376.

The son of James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormond and Eleanor de Bohun, James was
born at Kilkenny and given in ward, 1 September 1344, to Maurice FitzGerald,
