Notes for John BUTLER

John's mother Mary James Abernathy died after he was born in about 1852 and
before the 1860 census. John and his older brother Thomas E, along with a
young uncle Robert James Butler, are found as residents in a hotel, perhaps
under the care of the Inn owners, E B Wells and her son F M.

The RootsWeb entry for Ida Knowlton and her husband, listing all their
children, confirmed the middle name of Benjamin for son John B (called Benny
during his lifetime), the same name as his father. One uncertainty had been
why his brother also had the middle name Benjamin. Ida Knowlton and her
husband John Benjamin Butler name two sons with the same middle name:

The gravestone has his name as "John B Butler." This is how he was listed in
the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

Benjamin married Ida Knowlton on 1 January 1891.

In 1900 Benjamin and Ida and family are living next door to Frank Nicholson
and two of his chidlren, Huldah and Wilber.

I see that in 1900 the birthplace of Ida is reported as Alabama, both on her
entry and those of her children. But in 1910, on her entry, her birth state
is shown as Arkansas, but on the children's entries, it is reported as
Alabama.

In this census living next door (Hse/Fam #196) to John Benjamin and family is
a black family also named Butler, head of household Haley 32, born in
Virginia, with wife Matilda 38, born in Mississippi, and their 7 children, all
born in Mississippi.

I note that in the slave census of 1850, there were numerous black slaves
listed under the name of John Benjamin's father, Thomas F, in Panola County,
Mississippi. Note that Matilda Butler and all her children were born in
Mississippi.

Both children of John and Malissa were born in Arkansas, and the last child of
Haley and Matilda was also. The first child of John and Malissa was named
Mary Suffronia, or Suffrone. The last child of Haley and Matilda was named
Suffronia. Mary Suffronia is 5 and Suffronia is 9 months, with birth month
being reported in the census as September 1869.

These factors seem to indicate that this is a family that moved with John
Benjamin and family from the Butler home place in Panola County, Mississippi,
to Prairie Township of Arkansas County. This would be a free family at the
supposed time of the move to Arkansas. Many free families continued their
association with their former slave owners after the war and emancipation.
This appears to be one case of that.

1880 Arkansas County, Arkansas, census has the family of John Benjamin Butler
(Sr) with some variations of names or initials. But all entries match names
we have.

John Isaac Butler
Birth Dec. 21, 1809
Death Mar. 7, 1863 Tennessee

John Isaac Butler was the child of John Butler and Mary (Hunt) Butler. His
father, John Butler brought his family to Giles County from Granville Co.,
N.C. and settled at Aspen Hill, which at that time was the area of Tarpley
Shop southward across Richland Creek including the present community known as
Aspen Hill. The area extended down Highway-31 to about Conway. John Isaac
Butler was the first white child born in the area of Aspen Hill and is buried
in the Butler Graveyard on a hill overlooking Richland Creek. John Isaac
Butler was one of a number of children of his father, John Butler and his
mother Mary Butler, and all of his siblings stayed in the area except for
brother Thomas, who moved to Alabama and then to Mississippi. One of Thomas's
children was George W. Butler and he fought in the Civil War.

Notes for John Pomfert BUTLER

Sources consistently spell John's middle name Pomfert, and his mother's maiden
name (including the name of his father) as Pomfret. Some sources also have a
middle name for one of John's sisters as Mary Pomfret Butler.

I have seen no reference in any source to this difference in spelling. I
would think it inadvertent, since it is an easy typo. But because the
difference is consistent it seems to be purposeful. The Vermont town is
spelled Pomfret.

I have found that David Lee reports this person, who married Mary Polly Hunt,
and father of William H Butler, as John I Butler, but with the same dates and
info as the sources reporting his name as John Pomfret Butler.

David Lee also reports different birth information for William H Butler, with
birth date 4 April 1800 in Granville Co NC, and death in 15 Mar 1861 in Panola
Co MS. Other sources report William H (Hunt) Butler born in 1816 in Giles Co
TN.

Notes for Kenneth Clark BUTLER

Kenneth Clark and wife Phyllis Beck divorced in 1965 after their daughter
Angela Renee was born in February 1965.

I do not have the date of the divorce. Cousin Edith McSwain Jenkins reports
that Kenneth retained custody of the 4 daughters.

Edith reports that she seems to recall that Kenneth remarried his first wife
Phyllis Beck at some time after his divorce from his second wife Susie.

Kenneth was killed in a car accident on a highway near Stuttgart, Arkansas,
Arkansas.

Notes for Kirby Bonner BUTLER

----------------------------------------
Hello, Thank you for your email. Matthew O. Butler was my great grandfather.
I did not know him, but I did know Fairlee Tichenor, my great grandmother.
They actually had four children: Matthew, Kirby B., Rosebud (who married and
became Rosebud Nicholson), and Benjamin Calvin. Matthew died as a baby or
small child. Rosebud, my favorite great aunt, died a couple of years ago at
around 93 years. Benjamin Calvin died in 1985. He either killed himself or
was murdered. Kirby B. was my grandfather; he died of a stroke or a heart
attack in 1975. Kirby Bonner Butler, Sr. (my grandfather) had 3 children:
Kirby Bonner Butler, Jr. (my dad), Pamela Butler, and Greg Butler. My maiden
name is Laurie Lee Butler. I have a twin sister and two brothers.

John Benjamin Butler's parents were Thomas F. Butler (born in Granville, NC in
1802, died in Panola, Mississippi in 1851) and Mary Elizabeth Ingram (born May
30, 1809 in Brunswick, Virginia and died May 10, 1855 in Panola, Mississippi).
They had 8 children: Rufus A Butler, John Benjamin Butler, Infant Butler,
William H Butler, Frances M Butler, Francis M Butler, George W. Butler, and
Robert James Butler.

Thomas F Butler's parents were John Pomfert Butler (born March 31, 1770 in
Granville, NC and died June 18, 1837 in Giles, Tennessee) and Mary Polly Hunt
(born May 21, 1771 in Granville, NC and died in 1857 in Giles, Tennessee).
They had 9 children: Mary Butler, Sarah Butler, William H Butler, Thomas F
Butler, Nancy Butler, Elizabeth Butler, Jane H Butler, John Isaac Butler,
Memucan Hunt Butler.

John Pomfert Butler's parents were Isaac Butler (born abt 1744 in Culpepper,
Virginia and died May 13, 1809 in Granville, NC) and Mary Ann Pomfret (born
March 31,1749 in King William, Virginia and died in 1821). These are a list
of children I found for them, I'm not sure of the accuracy: John Pomfert
Butler, William Butler, Nancy Butler, James Hunt Butler, Polly Butler, Patsy
Butler, Isaac Butler, Sarah Sally Butler, Mary Pomfret Butler, Ormand Butler,
Elizabeth Butler.

Isaac Butler's parents were E G Butler (born in Berwick, Scotland and died in
