Birth Date: Martha A Butler, Aug 19, 18 [only 3 numbers here, an erasure and incomplete overwrite] Most of the birth dates in this list have been changed or obliterated. -- Family BIble entry, scan courtesy of Jack Dodson, 28 August 2011 In the 1880 census, the name of this child is faded and is transcribed by Ancestry as Wirtner. However, the general configuration of the name is very similar to the name in the 1900 census that is clearly Martha. I think the mark interpreted by Ancestry as an R is the left leg of initial A, matching the name in family sources, Martha A Butler. The 1880 census reports the month of birth, which agrees with the month reported in the 1900 census. But there is a discrepancy on the year. In 1900 birth year is reported as 1880 (which would have been after the 1880 census, when she was already reported as 10 months old). In 1900 Martha is consistently reported to be 19 years old. This is a common discrepancy in 1900 census birth dates. Lacking any other information about a daughter named Wirtner, I am considering that these two entries refer to Martha A. 1880 Federal Census, Coahoma County, Mississippi, 11 June, Beat 3, District 99, page 14, Hse #88, Fam #99 Buttler, Geo W W M 40 Farmer AL TN AL Buttler, Sallie A W F 32 Wife Keeping House MS VA MS Buttler, Martha A W F 10 months born Aug 1879 Dau Single MS AL MS 1900 Federal Census, Coahoma County, Mississippi, 20 June, Beat 3, District 23, page 14B, Hse/Fam #307 Butler, George W Head W M Dec 1889 60 Widowed 7 children/7 living AL TN AL Farmer Owns Butler, Martha Dau W F Aug 1880 19 Single MS AL AL

The report of her age here in 1870 does not match the reported birth in October (1869). If this baby was 4 months old she was born in January if they used the proper census date of 1 June. If they went by the actual date on this page, 30 June, it might have been February. Several sources suggest March was the month, but this would not work out to 4 months. Further uncertainties arise when later family sources record the year as 1871, including the grave. The family knows of no other child born before Mary who might be referred to in this 1870 census record. So we know the date of 1871 is too late. Mary was born a few months before June 1870. Family sources report her full name as Mary Brown Butler. Three One World Tree sources give three different dates for the birth of Mary Pomfret Butler: 1795, 1801 and 1803. The normal cutoff date used in genealogy for childbearing years is age 50. The last two birth dates are past the 50-year mark. For this reason I am using the year 1795. No source offers any further explanation related to the years of birth.

Libby Beliew first reported to me that Matt's middle name was Oliver: "I believe it probably stood for âOliverâ. My ggg-grandparents, the previously mentioned Thomas Jefferson and Sallie Amanda Wakefield Davidson, had a son named Matthew Oliver Davidson (b. 1873). I believe that Thomas J. Davidson and Malissa E. Davidson Butler were cousins, though Iâm not sure exactly how. I assume that Matthew O Butler was either named for Matthew Oliver Davidson or they were both named after the same person (who was apparently important to the Davidson family)." I later found the WWI and WWII registrations, which confirm that Matthew's middle name is Oliver. We also see an exact birth date, which differs from the date reported in the 1900 census: Dec 1879. Note also that the name on both draft registrations is spelled with two Ts: Matthew. WWI Draft Registration, 1942 Matthew Oliver Butler Residence Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas Birth 22 Dec 1879 [no location reported on this form] Occupation Farming, self-employed wife (nearest relative) Fairlee Butler Eyes Grey, Hair Black registration 12 Sept 1918 Stuttgart, Arkansas, Arkansas Signed Matthew Oliver Butler WWII Draft Registration, 1942 Matthew Oliver Butler Birth 22 Dec 1880, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas Residence Ethel, Arkansas, Arkansas wife (nearest relative) Fairlee Butler signed M O Butler The birth date on the two registrations differ. The year of birth is transcribed by Ancestry.com as 1878 for the WWI registration, but in fact the last number is smudged, and perhaps was partially overwritten, and could very well meant 1879. For WWI it was definitely 1880. This is probably a sign that he was uncertain, like so many other families of that time. Exact dates were not always a priority. The gravestone reports simply the year 1880. But census reports below make it more likely he was actually born in December 1879. The Social Security Death Index supports the 1880 birth date. Social Security Death Index Mat Butler Born 22 Dec 1880, Died Feb 1963 No Residence address reported SSN 432-70-6039 issued Arkansas (1956) No residence information was provided in the SSDI. I assume it was still Ethel. The census reports support a birth date in December 1879. The 1910 census reports Matt's age as 30 for the April census. If correct, this would place his birth in 1879. This date is consistent with the 1880 census report that in June 1880 he was 5 months old (born December 1879). 1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 16 June, Prairie Township, District 2, page 23, Hse #155, Fam #164 Benj Butler W M 52 TN SC VA Farmer M E Butler W F Wife 34 AL TN MS Housekeeping Mat [Mathew O] Butler W M 5Mos Son AR TN AL 1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 14 June, Prairie Township, District 7, page 10A, Hse #160, Fam #164 Butler Malissa Head W F Nov 1846 53 Widow AL TN MS Farmer Butler Mathew Son W M Dec 1879 20 Single AR TN MS Farm Laborer Butler Malissa Dau W F May 1886 14 Single AR TN MS Farm Laborer In 1910, Matthew has been married just a short time to Fairlee Tichenor. The name is spelled variously in Davidson and Butler sources and censuses, as Melius, Milius, Milas, etc. The 1880 census which we site spells the name Melus. Both these names, Milus and Marion, occur in Butler families from Carolina to California. The strong Butler stream in migration from north to south and west seem to be all related. I have attempted to fill out all the connections in this genealogy, whose primary focus is on other families to whom the Butlers are related. But there are signs of connection in that migration band from east to west. 1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 16 June, District 2, page 23, Hse #155, Fam #164 Benj Butler W M 52 TN SC VA Farmer M E Butler W F Wife 34 AL TN MS Housekeeping Melus [Milus] Butler W M 4 Son AR TN AL Gravestones of Mt Pleasant Cemetery Milus Marion Butler Sept 22, 1877 Mar ??, 1894 Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas Photo by Orville Boyd Jenkins 13 May 2017 Milus Marion Butler Birth Sep 22, 1877 Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Death Mar 1894 Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Milus was the son of John Benjamin Butler (1829-1887) and Melissa Edward Davidson (1846-1904) Siblings: Mollie S.
