Notes for Patsy BUTLER

Two One World Tree sources give two different dates for the birth of Mary
Pomfret Butler: 1786 and 1803. The normal cutoff date used in genealogy for
childbearing years is age 50. The last two birth dates are past the 50-year
mark. For this reason I am using the year 1786. No source gives any further
explanation about birth dates.

Notes for Petronilla BUTLER

Burke in his Complete Peerage, gives some information about Petronilla
(Petronella) Butler and her parents. He knows her by the name Pernel, a form
of the name we now know primarily as Parnell.

"GILBERT (TALBOT), LORD TALBOT, ... married, 1stly, before 8 September 1352,
Pernel, daughter of James (BUTLER), 1st EARL OF ORMOND [IRL], by Eleanor,
daughter of Humphrey (DE BOHUN), 4th EARL OF HEREFORD and 3rd EARL OF ESSEX,

living, 28 May 1365, and is said to have died in 1368."

Notes for Polly Ann BUTLER

It appears from records that Polly was her full given name, rather than just a
nickname for Polly which it normally is. Some records spell her name Pollye.
Of three city directories, one spells it that way, but the other two have
Polly. Her grave and obituary have Polly. Censuses have Polly.

Edith McSwain Jenkins, who knew Polly and grew up in the same community, says
Polly spelled it without the E. But we also note that both her marriage and
her divorce record notices in the newspaper had it spelled Pollye, which would
seem to indicate the spelling used in the official legal proceedings for those
events.

Butler, Elsie Wife F W 43 Grade 10 b Ark same house in 1935
Butler, Polly Ann Dau F W 16 5ingle Grade H-1 b Ark same house in 1935

Polly married James Tinsley, and they had two daughters. It is thought they
divorced but later remarried.

"Polly was Junior's [Oregon Butler b1891] sister. They lived in St Charles
when I knew them. They may have met in the service. They divorced, I think.
They had two girls. The oldest was Anna Ruth, but I don't remember the other
one's name,"
-- Edith McSwain Jenkins, personal communication to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 2
November 2018

A later marriage record in 1952 supports their divorce and indicates a
remarriage. The record reports both having the last name of Tinsley when they
married.

Marriage License Notices
James F Tinsley, 30, North Little Rock, and Pollye Ann tinsley, 28, Ethel.
-- Arkansas Democrat, 6 May 1952 p 11A

But there is one anomaly. Polly and James appear in three North Little Rock
city directories, but the first one is in 1951, then again in 1954 and 1957.
So it appears they were still married in 1951, but divorced then remarried
before the 1954 directory came out.

Otherwise, why would both their surnames be announced as Tinsley? A later
divorce in 1957 is found, however, posted on Ancestry by the same genealogist
who posted the 1952 marriage record, "gilmonts." I have other couples in my
genealogy who were divorced and remarried more than once.

Reid's grandson, Reid Alymer Butler III, indicates that the middle name three
of them share comes from an earlier relative, Ross Almyr Butler.

"Thank you for solving the mystery of where my middle name came from. Even
though it is spelled different my middle name is Alymer most probably came
from Ross Almyr Butler. I wad told it was a family name just like my Uncle

In 1900, Reid is a 3-year-old in the home of his parents Bernard and Anna, in
Bolivar County, Mississippi, on the Mississippi River, across from Arkansas.
They have lived in Arkansas for some time since their marriage, since the
first child William B was born in Arkansas.

The birth date given here, May 1897, differs from the date reported by family
sources and the Social Security Death Index, 3 July 1897.

In the 1910 census, we find that Reid's mother Anna is a widow. Note also
that Anna's age is reported as 36 instead of 46.

Before 1918, Aylmer had moved to New Orleans, where he registered for the US
WWI draft. He reports his wife as Willa. His middle name is spelled on this
card as Almyer. This record also reports he was born in Alligator,
Mississippi.

In the 1920 census, Reid is enumerated in the home of his sister Annie B

across from Phillips County, Arkansas. On the west side of Phillips County is
Arkansas County, where members of this Butler family moved in the late 1800s.

R A's grandson Reid Butler III, tells a story about his grandparents'
marriage.

"My Grandfather Reid Butler and my Grandmother Willa Birdwell (b1903 d 1972)
were married in Texas were they eloped to because her Dad hated my grandfather
who "stole" my grandmother from his hand picked man to be my grandmother's
husband, who introduced them when my grandfather accompanied him to the
Birdwell house."
-- Reid Alymer Butler III, email message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 15 December
2012

Reid and Willa married about 1927. A listing in the 1930 census matches them,
except Reid's age is wrong. In this 1930 census record, Reid (Reed) is
reported as 27 years old, although he was already 23 in 1920. Willa is
reported as 22 years old, although in the 1940 census, she is 33, 11 years
older, which is reasonable. The ages at which they were married match the
current ages reported, indicating marriage in 1927.

Also Reid A Butler Jr was born in March 1930, and also is missing here. I
have worked with Reid A Butler III on reconstructing his grandfather's family.
In our email discussion on this matter he comments:

"I know my grandparents married in Harrison County. TX in ____ and I know my

Notes for Rhett BUTLER

"My cousin Rhett Butler, age 1 1/2 in 1974. RIP Rhett. ... My cousin Rhett will
be interred with my parents and my oldest grandchild in the Butler grave in
that cemetery as well [buried with graveside services]. According to Rhett's
cousin Reid A Butler III, he was born 11 November 1971. His parents were
Marshall Archibald Butler, the youngest child of Bernard Benjamin Butler, and
Janet Bartley."

"[Cousin Rhett's dad was Marshall Archibald Butler the youngest of my dad's
siblings, who was the tallest of my dad's family at six foot three. Rhett was
born November 11th 1971. My uncle's wife and Rhett's mother was Janet Bartley.
His closest relatives are his aunt and uncle George Bartley and his sister
Joann Wisdom. I don't know if they'll actually post anything in the
obituaries but they have elected to not have any services other than at the
gravesite. ... My cousin Rhett will be interred with my parents and my oldest
grandchild in the Butler grave in that cemetery as well."

A Wisdom Family genealogy has some basic info on Janet Bartley and her family,
but has Rhett's birth date as 11 November 1972, rather than 1971. This date
in 1972, however, would match the comment Reid Butler reports of his
grandmother that the photo of Rhett at age 1 1/2 was in 1974.

Notes for Rhett Lee BUTLER

"Jamie M Butler: 'Didn’t y’all have a sibling named Rhett that died during
child birth?'
"Reid Butler III: 'Yes she would have been 68 she was 2 years older then me.
She is buried in the Hamilton Grave. ... And as she died at child birth no
birth certificate was issued, like she never happened. Her name was Rhett
Lee. On a side note my sister Roxanne named her youngest daughter Leann
honoring her oldest and youngest sisters combining their middle names Lee and
Ann. ... Yes, she was buried in Greenwood and yes that's my sister Rhett
listed in my mother's name as stillborn. The reason she died in childbirth
was the doctor's forceps slipped crushing her head'."

It appears that this is the infant's burial memorial, though the name Rhett is
not included. Marcella was her mother's name.

Notes for Robert Alfred BUTLER

David Lee has Robert's name as Alfred Robert. But siblings report Robert's was
Robert Alfred.

"Robert Alfred Butler October 4, 1914"
-- W H Butler Family Notes, by children of W M Butler, private paper, access
through Jack Dodson, 30 August 2011

In two censuses as a child he is listed as Alfred R, seeming to indicate the
name order is Alfred Robert. Is it possible that even the sibling(s) who
compiled the family information got his names reversed?

His WWII Enlistment records have his name as the family reports it.

time of death as Alligator in Bolivar County, Mississippi. One family
genealogy that does not give any sources reports the place of death as
Clarksdale (Coahoma County), Mississippi, which is quite likely if he died in
a hospital. Note that this source also switches the name order from that
reported by the family in the 53-page document we have seen (in the possession
of Jack Dodson, Clarksdale, Mississippi).
