An early anonymous genealogy reporting very early dates for all the children of George W and Sallie Butler reported that Robert H was born in 1869. However, in the 1880 census, (reported as Harvey), he is only 7 years old. In 1900, reported as Robert H, he is 25, with a reported birth date of April 1875. This is a 2-year discrepancy, from 1773 to 1775. 1880 Federal Census, Coahoma County, Mississippi, 11 June, Beat 3, District 99, page 14, Hse #88, Fam #99 Buttler, Geo W W M 40 Farmer AL TN AL Buttler, Sallie A W F 32 Wife Keeping House MS VA MS Buttler, Havey [Harvey] W M 7 Son Single School MS AL MS 1900 Federal Census, Coahoma County, Mississippi, 20 June, Beat 3, District 23, page 14B, Hse/Fam #307 Butler, George W Head W M Dec 1889 60 Widowed 7 children/7 living AL TN AL Farmer Owns Butler, Robert H Son W M Apr 1875 25 Single MS AL AL Farm Laborer Robert Harvey Butler Birth Apr. 1, 1873 Death Oct. 30, 1936 Parents: George Washington Butler (1839 - 1907) Sallie A Brown Butler (1848 - 1903) Burial: Jonestown Cemetery, Coahoma County,Mississippi Created by: Jack77 May 11, 2011 -- Find A Grave Memorial# 69677455, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=69677455

Two sources list Sarah as Sarah Sally Butler. Since Sally is the common nickname for Sarah, I assume this is the nickname for her given name Sarah. I have not sen a second given name in the sources.
Sarah F Butler appears to have been named for her mother, known in the family and in records as Sallie, the common nickname for Sarah. An early anonymous genealogy had very early dates for the children of George Washington Butler and his wife Sarah (Sallie) Brown. The date for Ben B Butler's birth was 1871, but in the 1880 census, Sarah is only 3, thus born about 1877. 1880 Federal Census, Coahoma County, Mississippi, 11 June, Beat 3, District 99, page 14, Hse #88, Fam #99 Buttler, Geo W W M 40 Farmer AL TN AL Buttler, Sallie A W F 32 Wife Keeping House MS VA MS Buttler, Mary B W F 9 Dau Single School MS AL MS Buttler, Sarah W F 3 Dau Single MS AL MS 1900 Federal Census, Coahoma County, Mississippi, 20 June, beat 3, District 23, page 14B, Hse/Fam #307 Butler, George W Head W M Dec 1889 60 Widowed 7 children/7 living AL TN AL Farmer Owns Butler, Sarah F Dau W F June 1877 22 Single MS AL AL Mrs Sarah Butler Longino Birth Sep. 28, 1879 Death Nov. 28, 1937 Parents: George Washington Butler (1839 - 1907) Sallie A Brown Butler (1848 - 1903) Spouse: John Thomas Longino (1872 - 1955) Burial: Jonestown Cemetery, Coahoma County, Mississippi Maintained by: Jack77, Originally Created by Bill White Nov 07, 2010 -- Find A Grave Memorial# 61235875, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2136970&GRid=61235875& The birth date on Sarah's gravestone is two years and three months later than her birth date reported in the 1900 census.

There is an entry for the birth of Thomas David Butler in the family Bible birth list, along with all the other children born earlier. On this page, the birth and death dates for Sarah (S A Butler) have been erased, and no new dates written in. We note also that the birth date for Mary Brown Butler is a year later than reported on her grave and in the 1870 census. The birth list says born 1 March 1871, but the grave says 1 March 1870, almost matching the report of "Baby" Butler, 4 months old in the 1870 census. The birth date of the second child, Ben B Butler, has been changed form Aug 7, 1871 to Aug 7, 1872, perhaps to allow for the change of birth date for Mary from 1870 to 1871. Could a similar problem have occurred with the birth date for Thomas David, 3 years after the death of S A, wife of his father George Washington Butler? Perhaps they erased the death date for S A thinking it was wrong, but never entering another date. Both birth and death dates for Sarah (SA) have been erased. However, he provides no documentation or commentary on most individuals and facts. I have photos of graves in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery, taken by my wife, Edith McSwain Jenkins. This includes the Butlers. I thought this included all the Butlers, but I have no photo of a grave in the name of Thomas E. I have found no public documentation of Ethelbert as a middle name for this Thomas E. An earlier Thomas Ethelbert Butler, cousin of this Thomas Ethelbert, was born June 1850 (and reported in some documents and family genealogies as born in 1872). Theolder cousins was named after his maternal grandfather Ethelbert Abernathy. Perhaps the second Thomas Ethelbert, boin in 1875, was named "symapathetically" after the same person. I have found no other family name Ethelbert in the background of the second Thomas E Butler, born 1875. Some genealogies have Thomas' middle name as Ethelbert, after his maternal grandfather, Ethelbert Abernathy. I have not found a record substantiating the middle name directly, or a report from a specified family record. However, on his son Thomas' WWI draft registration, the son's full name is Thomas Ethelbert Butler. A direct descendant wrote with this personal information on Thomas Ethelbert. "My dad was his grandson and he spoke often of him. He told about his middle name being Ethelbert and how his grandaddy wasn't very fond of the name. I think Thomas Ethelbert's son was Jr. but he went by Thomas Elton Butler." -- Janice Burgess Lipford, Ancestry Messaging, 23 September 2011 Since he is referred to in at least one census as Thomas E Jr, I feel that substantiates his name as Ethelbert like his father. That makes three of them, according to some genealogies. The other one reported in some genealogies. including David Lee, was born in 1875, son of John Benjamin Butler and Malissa Davidson, according to family sources . This is a common pattern. Where the name came from for the Thomas Ethelbert born 1875, a younger cousin of this one, I cannot find. I wonder if this is not an error in genealogy sources, based on analogy or confusion with the 1850 Thomas Ethelbert. I have found no documentation for Ethelbert as the middle name for the 1875 Thomas E. 1850 Federal Census, Panola County, Mississippi, 24 October, District 13, p 686 (344), Hse/Fam #533 Rufus A Butler 23 M Farmer $0 Real Estate b Tennessee [born abt 1827] Mary Butler 18 Tennessee [born abt 1832] Thomas E Butler 4mos M Mississippi [born abt March 1850] Elbert S Abernatha 14 F b Tennessee [born abt 1836] 1860 Federal Census, Panola County, Mississippi, 11 August, Page 45, House/Fam #300 F M Wells 34 M Hotel Keeper $0 Personal Estate $2200 Personal b Miss [born abt 1826] C C Pence 26 F b SC [born abt 1834] E B Wells 60 F b Virginia Cannot read or write [born abt 1800] W S Wells 23 M House Carpenter b Alabama [born abt 1837] Thos Butler 10 M b Miss [born abt 1850] John Butler 8 M b Miss [born abt 1852] Robert Butler 17 M Merchant's Clerk b Miss [born abt 1843] I have not found a census record for Thomas for 1870. 1880 Federal Census, Fayette County, Tennessee, 9 June, Civil District 7, Enumeration District 23, page 4, Hse/Fam #40 Butler, T E W M 27 Farmer MS TN TN [born abt 1853] Body, Sanford B M 28 Servant Married Works on Farm Cannot read or write TN TN TN Body, Caty B F 21 Married Works on Farm Cannot write TN TN TN Body, Peyton B M 7 Son Single TN TN TN Marriage Records, Shelby County, Tennessee T E Butler and Miss Evalena [Evie Lena] Brown Issued 22 Jan 1886 Bond of $1250 signed by T E Butler and G W Brown Married Jan 23, 1886 by H J Turner, Minister of the Gospel Family genealogies report the name of Thomas' wife as Evie Lena Brown. He was her daughter-in-law's brother. Evie Lena married him after Thomas E. died. I think the Stauffer guy was younger than my great grandmother. I couldn't find my great grandmother's death certificate because I was searching for Butler instead of Stauffer. I found a marriage record for her and Mr. Stauffer making it easier to find her death cert." -- Janice Burgess Lipford, Ancestry Messaging, 23 September 2011 Thomas' birth certificate reports his birth date as 26 Dec 1852, which cannot be, since he was already 4 months old in the 1850 census. In the 1880 census, his age makes his birth about 1853, and in 1900 it is Nov 1852. Somewhere along the way, Thomas adjusted his age, or remembered wrong, or someone incorrectly reported his birth date. Since he reported was in the 1850 census, we know he was born before that date. Thomas moved his family from Giles County, Tennessee, to Alabama, between 1829 and 1834, then to Lauderdale County, Alabama, until between 1840 and 1843, when he moved to Panola County, Mississippi. Thomas and Mary had 7 children, 3 born in Tennessee, three in Alabama and one in Mississippi. I do not list them all here.
