Notes for Jeremiah A CHAPEL

I learned from Jeremiah's death certificate that Jeremiah (Jerry) A Chapel was
born in an unincorporated town called Caro, in Nacogdoches County, Texas. in
1861. Caro is north of Nacogdoches town, and south of Longview.

"CARO, TEXAS. Caro is just off State Highway 204 ten miles north of
Nacogdoches in north central Nacogdoches County. It was named for José
Antonio Caro, who received title to the surrounding land in 1835. The area was
settled before the Civil War, but a community did not grow up until the end of
the nineteenth century, when the settlement became the center of intensive
logging operations. A post office and a school opened in 1904. Around 1906 the
Caro Northern Railway linked the town with Mount Enterprise. Caro flourished
in the period just before World War I; in 1914 the town had two drugstores, a
general store, a physician, a grocer, a large sawmill, and a reported
population of 1,300. After the war, however, the sawmill closed and the town
began to decline. By the mid-1930s the population fell to 150. The population
remained steady through the 1970s, but in the intervening years the school,
the post office, and all of the businesses closed. By the early 1990s Caro was
a dispersed community. The reported population in 1990 and again in 2000 was
113."

"Thanks for contacting me. John Evan Chapel is in my genealogy because his
mother, Mary Lydie Jenkins, was my grandfather's sister. My grandfather was
Joseph Asa Jenkins. From John Chapel in my tree you can easily navigate to
him to see Mary's and JA's Jenkins family in Cass County, Texas. My father
was Orville Lee Jenkins, son of Joseph Asa Jenkins and Julia Virginia (Jennie)

I researched John Evan [Chapel] quite a bit. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Before he married my great-aunt Alice, he was married to Nellie Hustead in
1919. It didn't last long as Nell died from a ... gunshot to the liver in
1920. ...

Not sure how he [John Evan Chapel] met Alice. He was quite the character and
well known in gambling circles in Houston. They lived in a very fashionable
area. His final years were very puzzling. My father worked for John before he
died, then in the 1940's my dad worked for the Sam Maceo at his club in
Galveston, the Balinese Room.

"John Evan was a bit of an enigma. He and Alice owned a very large home,
which at the time, was in the exclusive Montrose area in Houston JE bought
during the Great Depression. However, in the years before he died, he lived at
other addresses in downtown Houston, some probably hotels. Perhaps gambling
sites. Even his Death Certificate address was not Hawthorne. He was a heavy
drinker and would awake in the middle of the night to have a few. After he
died, Alice never worked and continued to live at the Hawthorne address. I
found a newspaper article written about him and his fine gambling integrity.
Famous individuals like Lester Goodson, Pontiac dealer, attended his funeral."

As often seems to be the case, the 1900 census reports one year difference in
the birth year for both Thomas and Mary. Thomas' known birth date from family
sources is 2 December 1857, Mary's 20 January 1857.

The census reports that Thomas and Mary were running a hotel. In his Jenkins
history, Harold Christian comments:
"The family suffered the loss of Great Grandfather Joseph Sanford on 26 May
1893.... By this point in time Joseph's brother-in-law Tom Chapel and Joseph's
sister Lide were running a hotel in Marlow. The Marlow Magnet, Marlow's first
newspaper, contains advertisements of Chapel's Hotel in many of its 1893
issues. (Copies of issues of this paper are on file in the library of the
Oklahoma Historical Society near the State Capitol in Oklahoma City.)"

In these censuses, the family name is spelled Chappel. But I note that in the
city directories, it is spelled Chapel, while there are other families whose
name is spelled Chappel. This seems to indicate that they spelled the name as
Chapel.

Notes for Trudie Zelma CHAPEL

Jenkins family sources consistently spell Trudy's name Trudy, whereas Jimmy
Epperson consistently spells it Trudie, from the Epperson family information.
There were two other Trudie Eppersons also, a granddaughter of this Trudie
Chapel Epperson, and a daughter of Finis Jerome Epperson, half-brother of
Trudie Chapel Epperson's husband, James Troy (Big Pop) Epperson. -- OBJ

The place of birth of the children's parents indicates that George's father is
different from the father of James, Dora and Viola. George's father was
reported born in Tennessee, but the others' father was born in Georgia. But
the last name of all of them is Chappel. If that is correct, it would mean
that Nancy was married to two men named Chapel.
