Notes for William Magness CHENAULT

Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002
License Number 11063
W J Chenault
Spouse: Rebecca J Alexander
Marriage 28 Nov 1871 Maury County, Tennessee

In this marriage record, note that William's initials are W J (Ancestry
transcribes it as W I). In other sources he is named as William W (usually in
the abbreviated form Wm W), William W or just William. Note in the record of
his second marriage his middle initial is M, matching his full name in
genealogies, William Magness Chenault.

Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002
W M Chenault
Spouse: M E Wells
Marriage 23 Dec 1885 Giles County, Tennessee

Some Chenault genealogies provide information on the three wives of Rev
William Chenault. The following fills out our profile of the first two and
reports the year of marriage to Mary (Molly) Simons Stroud).

William Magness Chenault
Birth 2 July 1850 in Lawrence County, Tennessee
Death 9 April 1929 in Grady County, Oklahoma
Marriage 28 Nov 1871 Maury County, Tennessee
to Rebecca Jane Alexander
(Birth 6 May 1854 in Alabama, Death 10 August 1881 in Lawrence County,
Tennessee)
Marriage 23 Dec 1885 Giles County, Tennessee
to Maggie Ellen Wells
(Birth 19 October 1857 in Tennessee, Death 3 June 1903 in Texas)
Marriage 1903 to Mollie Respy Simons [in Kaufman County, Texas, ref 1900
census]
-- Moncrief, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/18702437/person/2053200034

Note that there is a difference in the year of death recorded on William's
gravestone (1851) and the exact date of death in the genealogy above. The
date on the grave is likely the one that is in error. There are some other
details incorrect in William's obituary published in the newspaper, including
his step-daughter Mollie's name! She is named as Mollie Lane. This is in
1929, and she married Toliver Jorile (Joe T) Green in Marlow before 1920!

In the 1860 census, for some reason William's middle initial is given as an A
instead of an M, for his name Magness.

The designation for Asberry is confused, stating that Asberry is a Daughter
but Male. In 1910, this child (Asbry) is reported as a Son and Male. When
William's wife Maggie died in 1903, he married a neighbor widow Mary (Mollie)
Simons Stroud.

Stroud, Jay H Labor [sic] M W 28 Single TX TN AL Farm Labor

The enumerator has spelled the initials J H as the name Jay H, for John Henry
Stroud. This is Mollie Stroud's son, so it is interesting he was listed
simply as a Laborer, rather than a stepson of William. Notice that John (Jay)
is reported as being born in Tennessee, as the Chenault sons, although John
was born in Texas.

Next door to William and Mollie is another of Mollie's sons, James M. I see
that James' wife Laura is reported as having borne 3 children but only one is
living, yet two children are reported as his daughters. And the last one,
Lela (name is hard to read) is 10 years old, while James and Laura have been
married only 7 years. Also the older child is listed after the younger
daughter, usually a sign of different parentage. So James was previously
married.

The Obit index summary impolies that death occurred in Portland, but the Death
Index reports that death occurred in Washington County, in the Portland Metro
area. The obit was published in Portland. Portalnd is listed in three
neighboring counties, and is also partly in Washington, County. so death may
have been in Portland. The state Death Index reports on ly the county of

Notes for Amanda CHILDERS

----------------------
My father was Jack Osborne McSwain, he died in Pembroke Pines, Florida, his
father was William Boyd McSwain, who was married to Bonnie Mitchell, had 3
boys, she died and he remarried Mary Kiser, they had 2 girls.

Next comes Osborne Benjamin McSwain, he was married to Amanda Childers, they
were from down about Cherokee county S.C., Osborne's father was Thomas Asbury
McSwain, mother Alice (Aly Ann) Carpenter, then comes Charles McSwain who was
married to Luraner Washburn McSwain, he and she had abt. 16 children together,
she died, I should have her death date somewhere in my records, probably in
the 1840s, he then married my g.g.g.grandmother Sarah L. Throckmorton.

Charles's father was David McSwain, I think his mother was Catherine
Robertson.

reporting her grave give her birth year as 1817.

The name of Robert's wife in the 1870 census is Nancy, making it appear this
is a new wife, or another name for Patia. But Patia is still living in 1880,
when she was enumerated under the name of Patience as widowed head of the
household, with three grown children still at home with her. So the
identification is definite. This makes it appear that her name Patia or Pacia
in other enumerations was short for Patience. But her name on the grave is
Patia Martha Moss. Since we find Patia/Patience in the 1880 census, it seems
that Nancy in the 1870 census is also Patience.

Robert died some time after the 1870 census. Notice that Patience is reported
here as 73 years old, but in 1870 Patia was 69, and in 1860 54. Households
named Moss are living nearby, one next door, head of household Anderson, age
33.

Notes for Synthia CHILDERS

Some sources spell her name Synthia and some Cynthia. On her grave, the name
is actually spelled Syntha Mullinax.

Note that her grave reports her birth date as 28 Feb 1817. But the 1860
census age would place her birth in 1827.

It is puzzling that Cyntha is reported under her maiden name. She is reported
to have married Francis Marion Mullinax, and borne two children in 1843 and
1845. She is not in her parents' home in the 1850 census, so that matches.

Notes for Hannah M CHILDS

On the death certificate of her daughter Letha, Letha's father's name was
mistranscribed by Ancestry as Feese, but it was written as Few. Her mother
was named Harriet Childs. Other sources, including Letha's gravestone,
indicates her maiden name was not Feese, but Few.

Tennessee, Death Records, 1908-1958
Letha Gregory [Letha Few]
Residence Dandridge, Tennessee
Age 75, Birth abt 1855 South Carolina

Informant Jack Gregory, Dandridge, Tennessee

In what appears to be the right family census enumeration, the first name is
Hannah, not Harriet as reported by Letha's husband on Letha Few Gregory's
death certificate.

After the death of her husband Francis Marion Few, Hannah/Harriett married the
elderly John Hance. On her second marriage record, Harriett's last name was
recorded as Fuse.

Some genealogies report that Hannah's real name was Harriet M Childs, and
Hannah was a nickname. She appears in the 1880 census as Hariet, wife of the
elderly John Hance. Her two daughters, Jane Few and Emma Few, are in the
household.
