The connections to ancestors of Joseph Benjamin Christian are somewhat tenuous, but it appears his father was named Benjamin Franklin Christian. Sources are sometimes confused, especially some genealogies, who don't document well. There are numerous individuals in different family lines named Christian with the name Benjamin Franklin, as well as Joseph Benjamin. Sources that appear to be for the same Benjamin Franklin Christian report birth date around 1817 or 1818. There is a marriage record in Montgomery County, Tennessee in 1939 for a B F Christian, whose bride was named Caroline Carr. This may be Caroline Mabel Gilbert. Censuses report ages that indicate Caroline's birth about 1820, so she would have been about age 19 in 1839. We know Ben's wife Caroline Mabel was the daughter of Captain Mabel Gilbert, so her maiden name was Gilbert, not Carr. At 19 it is possible she was married briefly before this 1939 marriage. The identify of a Caroline Carr has not otherwise been determined, nor a previous marriage for Caroline Gilbert. Montgomery County, Tennessee, Marriage Index, 1799-1953 Christian B F Caroline Carr (name usually found as maiden name Caroline Gilbert) Solemnized by John Cooke, JP Married 21 November 1839 Recorded Montgomery County Marriage Book, p 17 Now to account for Joseph Benjamin Christian, thought to be Ben's son, who was born in about 1835, based on later census records. This would mean that Benjamin Franklin Christian had another wife before marrying Carline Carr, if this was the same B F Franklin, making Caroline Gilbert (Carr) his second wife, while she is normallly reported as his first. B F's obit reported that he moved to Texas in 1844, settling first in Upshur County. The 1850 census reports that he owned 540 acres of land in what was listed as Upshur District of the State of Texas. Only the Agricultural schedule of the 1850 census has been found. It is possible he still owned land in Upshur after moving to Bonham, which is in Fannin County. 1850 Federal Census Upshur District, Texas, 2 Oct, Agriculture Schedule, page 819 B F Christian 35 acres improved, 505 acres unimproved, $150 land value, $60 implement value, 1 horse, 1 mule, 6 milk cows, 8 cattle In 1860 B F and his wife C M are living near his parents James W and Louisa in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. 1860 Federal Census, Fannin County, Texas, 19 June, Beat 1, P O Bonham, p 32, Hse #219, Fam #221 B F Christian 43 M Farmer $4500 Real Estate Value $522 Personal Estate b Tenn [b abt 1817] C M Christian 40 F b Pennsylvania [b abt 1820] It seems that C M's maiden name was Gilbert. Another researcher had found the name C M Gilbert as the wife of Joseph Benjamin Christian, who seems to be B F's son. Her full name was Caroline Mabel Gilbert. Ben's obituary identifies her as the daughter of Capt Mabel Gilbert. Some genealogies have confused Joseph Benjamin Christian Sr with his father Benjamin Franklin Christian. "My investigation has identified Benjamin Franklin Christian. first wife (CM) as Caroline Mabel Gilbert (1820 PA - 1863 TX)." -- Loyd Keith Farris, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 March 2017 1860 Federal Census, Fannin County, Texas, 19 June, Beat 1, P O Bonham, p 31, Hse #209, Fam #211 J W Christian 70 M Farmer $5660 Real Estate Value $10,600 Personal Estate b NC [b abt 1790] Louisa Christian 61 F b Tenn [b abt 1799] James D Christian 20 M b Tenn [b abt 1840] Louisa P Christian 17 M b Tenn [b abt 1843] A book on the history of Grayson County, Texas, reports that B F Christian was born about 1814 in Tennessee. But his grave memorial says his birth date was 1 July 1817. The actual gravestone has the date of death and age down to the day.The 1817 date is a match, as such records go, for the age of B F Christian in the 1880 census making birth about 1818. His wife is reported as Louisa. But some genealogies have mixed sources for our B F Christian and similar records for another Benjamin Franklin Christian in Missouri whose wife's name was Lavinia. Some genealogies have her as Lavinia Louisa. That Ben and Lavinia died in Atchison County, Missouri, not Texas. Texas, Select County Marriage Index, 1837-1965 Benjamin F Christian Louisa Davis License issued 5 October 1864 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas Marriage performed 6 October 1864 by M Y Brockett, Minister of the Gospel Ben was reported in the tax list for Grayson County, Texas, in 1886, reported as a Hotel Keeper in Sherman. This matches the report of occupation in his obituary for his residence in Sherman, Grayson County. May 1886 Tax List, Grayson County, Texas, p 21 Benj F Christian Residence Sherman Occupation Hotel Keeper Some records suggested that Benjamin Franklin Christian may have lived in Marion County, Texas. There are black Christian families with similar names in that county, and the Christian families in this genealogy lived in surrounding counties of East Texas, especially Cass County, to the northwest, and Titus County, a little farther northwest. In light of fairly continuous and now voluminous records in Grayson County, Texas, the Marion County connection seems unlikely. And since other Christians that seem to be connected are in that area, his connection to the Cass County and Marion County families may not be as firm as earlier thought. The same or similar name may occur among the Cass-Marion Countires Chrsitan family. Other Christian families assert a connection, as in the family information and research of descendant Keith Farris, who has been in correspondence with this genealogy since 2015. "Mineola Christian Battles (1890 - 1972) was my maternal grandmother. Her father was Joseph Benjamin Christian and his father (my second great grandfather) was Benjamin Franklin Christian (1817 - 1870)." -- Loyd Keith Farris, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 31 December 2015 The Benjamin Franklin Christian I find with these birth and death dates is reported in numerous genealogies, but has no son named Joseph Benjamin Christian in any of them. Furthermore, he was born and died in Georgia. Thus we have no basis for 1870 as a date of death for our Benjamin Franklin Christian. Some genealogies have confused Benjamin Franklin Christian with Joseph Benjamin Christian as the husband of Louisa Taylor in Cass County, Texas, whose second husband was Joseph Sanford Jenkins. Joseph Benjamin, born about 1835, seems to be the son of Ben Franklin Christian, but the dates of marriage form Ben's obit for his marriages would put the birth of Joseph Benjamin before the first known marriage of Ben to Caroline M Gilbert. Caroline's age reported in the 1860 census, also, would make her birth in about 1820, making her only about 15-16 years old when J B was born. Possible, but not likely. Ben may have been married first in Tennessee before coming to Texas in about 1844 where he married Caroline Mabel Gilbert in Fannin County. No marriage record has been found that firmly matches and nothing was mentioned in his fairly detailed obituary about a wife before C M Gilbert. ----------------- Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. The genealogy also reports that he married his first wife, a "daughter of Capt. Finally, when Keith Farris mentioned in our correspondence that he had found it, with some more searching I did manage to locate it. It contains an obituary that appears to be contemporary with his death, but the memorial gives no credit or documentation. No burial information has been found for his wife Louisa Davis (who may be the same person as Ellen B Davis reported as his wife in the 1880 census above). His genealogy says he was born in Tennessee; assuming it is right then indicates the error in the 1860 census, reporting him born in Texas. Considering that the info in the obituary probably came from a family source, we will follow this report, rather than the census. ----------------- Benjamin F "Ben" Christian Birth Jul 1, 1817 Death Oct 16, 1886 Whitesboro, Grayson County, Texas, USA When a man dies and those who knew him all say he was a good man, and his life has been worthy to be an example for every young man, then those who knew him not will appreciate anything that will perpetuate the memory of such a noble character. Such a man was Benjamin F. Christian, who first saw the light in Tennessee about the year 1814. He came to Texas in 1844 and settled in Upshur County. He removed from there to Bonham shortly afterward, and married a daughter of Capt. Mabel Gilbert. In 1858, he located in Sherman and engaged in the hotel business. His wife died in 1863, and in 1864 he was married to Miss Lou Davis, daughter of Micajah Davis, one of the earliest settlers of Grayson County. After the loss of the late war he removed to Whitesboro and engaged in the mercantile business with Capt. Sam B. Savage. He died October 16th, 1886. His last wife survives him. "Uncle Ben," as he was familiarly called, was a devoted Odd Fellow. It may be justly said of him that he was the father of Odd Fellowship in North Texas. For years he traveled from the Sabine to the extreme western frontier, even when the Indians deprecated the western counties, organizing Lodges and lecturing. Under dispensation of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Grand Lodge, he instituted the first Lodge in the Indian Territory, at Caddo. He was a charter member and organized the Lodge at Whitesboro, which was named for him, in the year 1868. In 1872 he was elected Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas. He was a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and one of the most active workers in the Old Settlers' Association, having delivered a most touching valedictory at the reunion in Sherman in August 1886, about two months before his death. He was buried at Oak Wood Cemetery in Whitesboro, Texas. The 1900 census gives Peter's birth date as September 1888, with his age as 11. This age and birth date differ from that reported by Amanda's brother Bud Jenkins, who lists all her children in a book. The date for Pete there is 17 November 1887. Because there are several errors in the birth dates for 1900, it is uncertain how reliable this date for Peter is. At least this age matches the reported birth date, whereas reports for some of the children do not. The place of birth seems to be Naples, Morris County. This was a town near the farm, mentioned in family information and by Joseph Asa Jenkins in a TV interview in 1955. Joe mentions that the Jenkins family bought supplies in Naples. In Pete's World War I Draft Registration Card, his place of birth is written Maples. This appears to be a mis-write of Naples. There is no town in Texas named Maples, though there is a Maple, Texas, no where near any area associated with the Christian and Jenkins families. Peter is listed oddly in the 1900 census by an enumerator with very poor and inconsistent handwriting and spelling. Ancestry.com has done some poor transcriptions, also, adding to the confusion. 1900 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 3 August, Union Township, District 211, page 13A, Hse/Fam #189 Willie Christain [sic] Head W M Oct 1857 42 Miss England GA Farmer Mandy Christain Wife W F Mar 1858 42 MS MS MS William Christain Son W M Oct 1886 13 TX England Miss Farmer Oscar Christain Son W M May 1887 (? 1882) 18 (?) They transcribe it as Rut. When I first saw the entry they transcribed as "Rut," my first thought was "Put." I still think the first letter is a P, not an R. The R's on the page are looped differently. Also, the first letter of "Rut" looks the same as that on the name Pearl in the first family on the page. The enumerator always links a capital P with the following vowel (except I found one name out of several pages where he did not). In comparing vowels in other names on the page, this name seems to be "Peet," a strange but phonetically correct entry for "Pete." The entry also matches the place of Peter in the sequence of children in birth dates we have and other censuses. All the E's on the page are closed. The E in his sister Iler's name looks like an I, but it is not dotted. When I compare the strokes inside Peet with a couple of names that have a known u, like Susa (which seems to be an entry for Susan, and he left off the final vowel, like other name unfinished in the page). The U's have a flat up stroke on the right, whereas the two strokes are fully formed in the entry "Peet," which supports the reading of Peet for Peter. 1910 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 28 April, Oakdale, District 263, page 20B-21A, Hse #309, Fam #390 Christian, William G Head M W 60 MS England AL Farmer Christian, Amanda L Wife F W 45 MS GA GA Christian, Iler F Dau F W 20 TX MS MS Christian, Charles Son M W 17 OK MS MS Farming Christian, Robert Son M W 13 OK MS MS Christian, Anna Dau F W 10 OK MS MS Christian, Henry Son M W 8 OK MS MS An email from Judy Oldziewski informed me that she discovered that Peter's gravestone has his name spelled Peat. "Drury (or Drewry) Christian, whose birth date ranges between 1750 and 1793 in various trees, but the best support is for the way you have it, namely about 1760. He had three wives that we know of, Mornin (or Mourning) Christian, daughter of Charles Hunt Christian and Mary Leake; Frances Elizabeth Oglesby, whom for the moment we have no choice but to accept as mother of Cenas, Pyrene, and Sally; and Frances Connally. Only for Mornin Christian do we have actual Virginia marriage records, one each for 4 Mar 1784 and 4 Mar 1785. After the last child was born of this marriage, in 1799, there was a jump until 1808, when Cenas and Pyrene were born, followed by Sarah Frances "Sally" in 1811. Unless all the trees that list Frances Elizabeth Oglesby as their mother is wrong (I have found no actual marriage record, [Frances Oglesby is the mother of these three daughters].)" -- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 January 2018 "One thing really interesting to me is the apparent attraction the Connally boys had for my grgr grandmother Sally Christian Jones and her Christian family sisters. Charles is listed by that name alone, or as Charles H in most censuses. The 1900 census has his name as Henry C, though the next-born child was also named Henry. His son Ishmael's obituary gives his father's name as Charles Henry Christian. "Ishmael Leland "Ish" Christian, Age 82, of Globe, passed away November 16, 2004, at Heritage Health Care Center. He was born in Mountain View, Oklahoma on October 3, 1922, the son of Tersal Georgine (Tabor) and Charles Henry Christian. ... Left behind in loving memory are: his wife of 36 years, Mary E. Christian of Globe, AZ; ... brother, Dwayne Christian of Iowa; sister, Betty Jo Byrd of Willcox, AZ; brother-in-law, Bill Duncan of Catalina, AZ; ... His parents and sister, Billye Duncan preceded him in death." -- Obituary of Ishmael Leland Christian, Unknown Newspaper, Tucson, Arizona, 23 November 2004, http://ancstry.me/UfHMvd Here are the variations of Charles' name I have seen from sources: Henry C - 1900 census Charles -- uncle Bud Jenkins' list; 1910 census Charles H -- 1920 census; WWI Draft registration (Charles, But signed C H) Charlie H -- 1930 census It is not certain that Henry was also the name of this child. But the predominance of sources indicates that the name beginning with the H was the middle name, not the first, though he is Henry C in the 1900 census. His younger brother Henry is listed as simply Henry in all censuses and his uncle's list of children, except the 1930 census for Oakdale, Washita County, Oklahoma. There he is listed as Henry C. Thus we have Charles H and Henry C. This might explain why the 1900 census enumerator got confused on the name of Charles and listed him as Henry C, which seems to be the younger brother's name. I don't know what Henry's initial C stands for nor what Charles' initial H stands for. 1900 Census, Union, Washita County, Oklahoma, District 211, page 13A (147A), Hse/Fam #189 Willie Christain [sic] Head W M Oct 1857 42 Miss England GA Farmer Mandy Christain Wife W F Mar 1858 42 MS MS MS Henry C Christain Son May 1892 8 [seems to be Charles] Chickasaw Ind Terr England Miss Farmer 1910 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 28 April, Oakdale, District 263, page 20B-21A, Hse #309, Fam #390 Christian, William G Head M W 60 MS England AL Farmer Christian, Amanda L Wife F W 45 MS GA GA Christian, Charles Son M W 17 OK MS MS Farming In this census the birth place of his father was mis-recorded on every child's entry, showing England, which was their grandfather's birthplace. It shows exactly the same as for Elizabeth, as though he were her brother, rather than her son. But it seems highly likely this is Zene and Elizabeth's son, but the enumerator made an error. It appears that Waller's entry should show TX MS TX. In 1900 Zene is still in Cass County, Texas with his family, but he is now a widow. 1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 13 January, Justice Precinct 3, District 22, page 13A, Hse/Fam #40 Christian, D Z Head W M Feb 1858 42 Widowed MS England AL Farmer Christian, Walter Son W M Nov 1879 20 TX MS TX Farm Laborer Christian, Jack Son W M Jan 1883 17 TX MS TX Farm Laborer Christian, Cleveland W M Apr 1884 16 TX MS TX Farm Laborer Christian, Ora Dau W F Apr 1887 13 TX MS TX At School Christian, Minnie Dau W Sep 1889 F 10 TX MS TX At School In 1910, Daniel Walter is married, and his widowed father is in his household. His brother Andrew Jackson (Jack) Christian is also living with him. According to the 1910 census, Daniel W Christian was born about 1881 or 1882. Though there is a discrepancy in age from that reported in 1900, this would be the child reported as Walter in 1900 and Waller in 1880. But the ages in 1900 and 1880 match. The clincher on birth year, however, is the 1880 census, since he had to be born before the 1880 census, and not in 1881 as his age in 1910 would erroneously suggest. 1910 Federal Census, Kiowa County, Oklahoma, 4 May, Mtn View Township, District 179, page 9A, Hse/Fam #107 Christian, Daniel W Head M W 28 Married 7 years TX TN TX Laborer, Farm Hand Owns [b abt 1882] Christian, Lillie Wife F W 22 Married 7 years 4 children/3 living TX TX TN [b abt 1888] Christian, Imalove Dau F W 6 TX TX TX Christian, Norman Son F W 2 OK TX TX Christian, Hazel Dau F W 4mos OK TX TX [b abt Nov 1909, based on census date of 1 April] Christian, Daniel Z Father M W 50 [Marital Status unreported] Tenn England Alabama Farmer Christian, Andrew J Brother M W 25 Single TX TN TX Farmer U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Age 38, Birth Date 11 Nov 1879 Residence Carnegie, Caddo County, Oklahoma Farmer Nearest Relative (wife) Lillian Christian, Carnegie Short Medium Build, Gray Eyes, Black Hair Registered 12 September 1918 Signed D W Christian 1920 Federal Census, Caddo County, Oklahoma, 12 January, Carnegie, District 2, page 6A, Second Street, Hse #182, Fam #183 Christian, Daniel W Head Owns M W 40 TX MS TX Trader, Farms and Stock [b abt 1979] Christian, Lillian M Wife F W 31 TX TX AL [b abt 1889] Christian, Imalove Dau F W 16 TX TX TX [b abt 1903] Christian, Daniel W Son M W 12 OK TX TX [b abt 1907] Christian, Hazel Dau F W 10 OK TX TX [b abt 1909] Christian, Joy C Son M W 6 OK TX TX [b abt 1913] Christian, Letha E 4yrs5mos F W 20 OK TX TX [b abt June 1915] Christian, Woodrow Son M W 1yr8mos OK TX TX [b abt April 1918] U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, City Directory, 1942, p 155 Christian Danl W (Lillian) janitor h 46 Madison av I note that thte directory reports his address as 42 Madison, but in 1942, on his WWII draft card, he reported the address as 146 Madison. 1870 Federal Census, Titus County, Texas, 6 August, Mt Pleasant, page 161, Hse/Fam #1120 Peter Christian 56 M W Farmer England Polly A Christian 36 F W Alabama Daniel Christian 12 M W Mississippi In 1880, there is another Christian family 2 houses down from Bart. A Gain (?) P Christian is the same age as Bart, 23. His characteristics are close to those for Daniel in other reports. Perhaps "Gain" is a mis-write for Zene. Both "Gain P" and Bart were born in Mississippi. The father of both was born in England, which makes it seem that both Gain and Bart are sons of Peter. And it appears on final analysis that Daniel and Bartlett were born only one year apart, as recorded in 1870: Daniel age 11 and Daniel age 12. There is no child in 1860 that would match Gain's age. But this is consistent with great age variations in this family, as indeed in many of the census reports in this period of history. Between the 1860 and 1870 censuses, there is only a 4-year difference in the age reported for Daniel, from 8 to 12! In the 1880 census, a Henry Christian, age 13, is living with Gain and described as a brother, born in Texas, father born in England, mother Alabama, which matches Peter and his second wife. These characteristics match the child Henry, last-born of Polly/Mary Waldon Christian. This strengthens the likelihood that "Gain" is "Daniel Zene." In addition, the wife of Gain matches Elizabeth, Daniel's wife, in name and age. Circumstantially, further, we note that all these brothers remain close together in their move through different Texas Counties and into Oklahoma Territory and to their death in the Mountain View-Oakdale Area of Kiowa-Washita Counties, Oklahoma. 1880 Census, Cass County, Texas, 10 July, Precinct 3, page 59, Hse/Fam #559 Christian, Gain P [Daniel Zene] W M 23 Farmer MS England AL Christian, Elizabeth W F 20 Wife Keeps House TX KY TX Christian, Walter W M 8 months, born October 1879 Son TX KY TX [ TX MS TX?] Christian, Henry W M 13 Brother Farming TX England AL The report of birthplaces for Waller and parents is odd. He is now living with his son Jack in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in the southeastern corner with Arkansas and Texas.
