Notes for James W CHRISTIAN

"My Ancestry.com research identifies Benjamin Franklin Christian (1818 TN-1886
TX) as being a son of James W. Christian (1790 NC-1865 TX); and it appears
that JWC's father was Drury Christian (1766 VA-1833 TN))."
-- Keith Farris, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 7 March 2017

In the 1790 census for Chatham County, North Carolina, James' father Drury is
reproted on page 36. In his household is reported 2 males over 16, 1 female
(not age grouped) and 2 slaves, for a total of 6 household members. James W
Christain is reported born in 1790, so he is probably the 1 male under age 16
in Drury's household. Nearby are two other Christian households, whose names
appear to be Drury's brothers, James (p 33) and thomas (p 34).

"Drury married Betsy Brewer (1766 -1820) in 1789 and married Sarah N Payton
(1787 NC - 1823 TN) in 1805. It is possible that Drury's father was also
named Drury Christian (1730 VA - 1783 NC) and he married Lucretia Williams
(1727 VA - 1786 NC) in 1751."
-- Keith Farris, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 15 March 2017

The following marriage record appears to match the James Christian and wife
Louisa who moved to Fannin County, Texas. But it matches also a burial in
Atchison, Missouri for a James and Lavinia Christian. The marriage in
Davidson County matches the 1850 census in Davidson County, reporting J W and
Lavina Christian with four children. The Fannin County, Texas, 1860 census
reported the same last two children James D and Louisa P as reported in
Davidson County, Tennessee, in 1850. Lavinia in 1850 matches Louisa in 1860.

So the couple married in Davidson County, Tennessee, and James W and Lavinia
would seem to be confirmed as the same couple as reported in Fannin County,
Texas, under the names of J W and Louisa Christian.

This matches a listing in the 1820 census, enumerating James W Christian and
his household in Dickson County, Tennessee. His father Drury was listed a few
houses away, below him on the same page.

-----------------
A Find a Grave memorial has reported a burial that also matches James and
Louisa, but it is in Atchison County, Missouri. The wife is named Lavinia
Joslin Christian, but the gravestone name has only the first name Lavina, and
wife of Ja's [James] Christian. A James W Christian is there as her husband.
This could be a different family and the memorial manager reported Joslin as
her maiden name, mistakenly confusing her with the Davidson County, Tennessee,
couple who seem conclusively to have moved to Texas.

It is possible, but not very likely in that era, that they did die in Texas
and were taken back to Missouri for burial. But then why not to Davidson
County, Tennessee? Nothing else connects them to Missouri. Further, James
Christian in Missouri was born in 1803 and died in 1871. Lavinia was born in
1807 and died in 1863. he James in Missouri is found with another family,
probably a daughter, in 1870, the year before he died. So he was not in
Texas.

Even more definitive is the finding that James and Lavinia Christian were
reported in the 1850 census in October in Buchanan County, Missouri, while
James W and Lavinia were reported in August 1850 in Davidson County,
Tennessee, the county where they were married.

Notes for James Waldon CHRISTIAN

This James appears to be an adopted son, who was a younger brother of Peter's
second wife Mary (Polly) A Waldon. In 1960, there are several Waldon children
living with Peter and Mary and Peter's children. James Waldon is 5 in this
census.

Other Waldon children in the Christian household in 1960 are Sarah E age 11,
Mary age 9, Thomas age 7, then James is the youngest. In 1870, James is the
only one of these children with a matching child in the Christian household.
The likelihood that this James is the James Waldon of 1860 is strengthened by
the ages reported.

In 1860 both James Waldon Christian and Bartlett Christian are reported as 5
years old. In 1870, both James Christian and Bartey Christian are reported to
be 11 years. Originally I had only the 1870 census, so this same age in the
census led me to conclude that Bartlett and James were twins.

After the further evidence detailed above, I rather think that James was the
young brother of Bartlett's step-mother, who happened to be the same age
(misreported as it may have been in one of the censuses) and that he was later
adopted by Peter Christian.

Notes for John O'Neal CHRISTIAN

John O'Neal Christian is buried in a triple grave with his grandparents Henry
and Ida, in the Denison Cemetery, Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma.

Transcription of Gravestone of Henry and Ida Christian
A triple grave
Christian
Henry 1866-1944
Ida 1869-1951
O'Neal 1909-1950

John O'Neal is the son of William V and Rosa Mae Christian. Henry is his
grandfather's brother. William V is the son of William James, whose father
was William Peter Christian.

Henry Harvey Christian is also the son of William Peter, and a half-brother to
William James. William James, the father of William V, is the grandfather of
John O'Neal. Thus Henry Harvey Christian is the great-uncle of John O'Neal
Christian. An interesting relation for his to have been buried in an unusual
triple grave with Henry Harvey and Ida.

But additionally, I learned from Anne Thompson that Rosa Mae Christian was the
daughter of Henry and Ida. Anne writes:

"I know his mother was Rosa Mae Christian, daughter of Henry and Ida
Christian. ... In looking up census records after reading your information, I
believe Rosa Mae married her cousin William V. Christian and perhaps left him
before and just after Hack (Hathaway) [Rosa's brother] was born. On the 1910
census they were living in Washita Co. OK."
-- Anne Thompson, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 April 2011

In the 1910 census, John O is reported to be age 6 months. Later ages do not
match this, being either one or two years older. The names in the 1920 census
seem to indicate that John's initial O stands for O'Neal.

1910 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 28 April, Oakdale, District

Rosa M Christian Wife F W 20 Married 3 yrs TX TX TX [b abt 1890]
Christian, John O Son M W 6 months [b abt Oct 1909] OK TX TX

I had not figured out Rosa's maiden name until April 2011 when Anne began
corresponding with me about the Christian family. So Rosa married her cousin
of the same surname, and Henry Harvey was also John O'Neal's maternal
grandfather. However, soon afterwards I found Rosa Mae in the 1920 census,
in the household of Henry and Ida, in White Township of McCurtain County,
Oklahoma. But she is designated as a Boarder, not a daughter. This seems to
indicate she is not their daughter.

In 1920, a census record for what appears to be this Christian family reports
O'Neal is in his father's home with his stepmother Fannie in Parker County,
Texas (Weatherford area). O'Neal is reported here as 12 years old, which
would put his birth date before February 1908, not in October 1909, as seems
indicated by the age in1910. If the age in 1910 is correct or close, John
would not have been 12 years old until October 1921. Note that in 1930 he is
21, which would fit the birth in October 1909.

Notes for Joseph Benjamin CHRISTIAN

Christian Family Provenance

Details are unclear on the first husband of Louisa Taylor, who married a
Christian. She had a son named Joseph B Christian, and it seems likely her
husband was named the same. Harold Keith Christian did the first thorough
research on this family in the 1970s and 1980s.

"The Hinds County, Mississippi, 1850 Slave Census enumerates a Joseph B.
Christian who could be Louisa's first husband. For some reason his family was
not enumerated in the regular 1850 census for that county, however. Hinds
County was near Yazoo and Attala counties, where a number of Taylors, Jenkins
and Days lived in the 1840-1950 time period."
-- Jenkins Family History by Harold Keith Christian Online, p 9,
http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf

Harold Christian did not discover the parents of Joseph Benjamin Christian
form Hinds County, Mississippi. He must be kin to all the other Christians
living along the trail from Tennessee to east Texas, some of whom also moved
to Oklahoma Territory or Indian Territory around the same time. Joseph and
Louisa Christian's son Joseph Benjamin married Catherine Smith, sister of the
first wife of Joseph Asa Jenkins, Hester Smith.

No entries have been found for Joseph B Christian in the tax rolls of Cass
County, though there are many records for the Jenkins family in the county.
Louisa is listed in a couple of records as Louisa (or L) Jenkins, after the
time of her marriage to widower Joseph Sanford Jenkins in 1872.

One might expect to find one or two for her as Louisa Christian, after her
husband's death, but none have come to light. The name Joseph Christian is
common and occurs in many instances in various locations but none definitively
refer to J B Christian who married Louisa Taylor and lived in Cass County.

There is a city directory entry for a Joseph B Christian in Memphis, Tennessee
for 1872. This directory entry in an 1872 Memphis city directory may be for
someone related to Louisa Taylor Christian's husband or son, but could not be
for her husband, who died before Louisa's marriage to Joseph Sanford Jenkins
in 1872.

Some other genealogies, such as a Funsten family tree, report that Louisa
Taylor Christian's husband was named Benjamin Franklin Christian, and only the
son was named Joseph Benjamin. The dates do not fit, with a generation or
more missing. And none of these genealogies have any discussion or
explanation or even notes on the dates provided. Sourcing is also lacking, so
these genealogies are not credible.

But dates match fairly well for Benjamin Franklin Christian to be her
husband's father, and her husband and son both named Joseph Benjamin
Christian.

One Christian family genealogist made contact in December 2015 to provide
Joseph Benjamin Christian's father's name.

"Mineola Christian Battles (1890 - 1972) was my maternal grandmother. Her
father was Joseph Benjamin Christian and his father (my second great
grandfather) was Benjamin Franklin Christian (1817 - 1870)."
-- Loyd Keith Farris, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 31 December
2015

The Benjamin Franklin Christian I find with these birth and death dates is
reported in numerous genealogies, but has no son named Joseph Benjamin
Christian in any of them. Louisa's son Joseph Benjamin did have a daughter
named Mineola, born about 1892. If this is the same Joseph Benjamin
Christian, then his reported daughter Mineola Christian is an additional child
to the known Christian children of Louisa (Taylor?) Christian and her husband.

Further cooperative research with Keith in 2017 yielded some resources
indicating that Joseph Benjamin Christian Sr's parents wre Benjamin Franklin
Christian and Caroline Mabel Gilbert form Tennessee.

"My investigation has identified Benjamin Franklin Christian. first wife (CM)
as Caroline Mabel Gilbert (1820 PA - 1863 TX)."
-- Loyd Keith Farris, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 March
2017

B F's Find a Grave memorial inlcudes his obituary published at the time of his
death, which reports he married C M after he moved to Texas in 1844, so she
could not be the father of Joseph Benjamin Chrtistian Sr , born about 1835.
This was about 11 years before BF himself came to Texas, but perhaps BF was
married earlier and JB was born in Tennessee. No children or wife bfore C M
were mentioned in BF's obituary.

Move to Chickasaw

Louisa's second husband Joseph Sanford Jenkins moved to Chickasaw Nation with
his son Joseph Asa and his family about 1890. J A reported that he moved
there with or shortly after Joseph Benjamin Christian Jr. Joe Christian was
married to Catherine Jane Smith, the sister of J A Jenkins' wife Hester Ann
Smith. J A's sister Amanda Lucinda Jenkins had married William James
Christian. These couples moved to Chickasaw Nation around the same time.

J A Jenkins' sister Mary Lydie married Thomas Jefferson Chapel. They also
moved to Chickasaw Nation. So there was a migration of some Cass County
families to Chickasaw Nation around 1885 to 1890. But Louisa Christian
Jenkins is not included in this migration. No word is heard of her and no
record found after the 1880 Cass County census.

The following genealogy article about the Funsten family mentions the
Christian family and Louisa Taylor Christian Jenkins. Only four Christian
children of Louisa are mentioned. The name of Louisa's original husband named
Christian, father of the children listed here, is not given.

---------------------------------
MRS. G. FUNSTEN Bilbrey, Rt. 2, 824 N. 5th, Frederick, Okla. 73542, is re …
[a line of text was left out of the printed article], born 1827, Louisiana and
married first, Nancy (maiden name unknown), born South Carolina. Their
children, all born in Cass County, Texas, were David, Laura, George, John and
Robert. His second marriage was to Frances Elizabeth Christian in 1877. They
had six children and he disappeared in 1889.

The Christians [sic] children included Joseph Benjamin, Frances Elizabeth,
Lucinda and Emily, all born in Cass County between 1854 and 1862. Joseph
Benjamin married Catherine Smith; Lucinda, Larkin Dycus; and Emily, Jason
Forsyth.

Their mother, Louisa, married a second time, J. S. Jenkins, March 7, 1872, and
had one son, Henry. After her death in 1900, Joseph Benjamin Christian sold
the family farm to Lonzo Hicks. Family tradition states that there is a
lineage connection to the Hensley family but this has not been proven.
-- Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 22 August 1971, p 9G
---------------------------------

This reference to her death in 1900 is very interesting. The family has no
definite information on a date of death and has found no grave or
documentation of her death. The date in 1900 is especially intriguing since,
in about 1890, her husband Joseph Sanford Jenkins moved to Indian Territory
with his son Joseph Asa. That story includes no information about Louisa.
Joseph himself died near Marlow and was buried there in 1893, just three years
after moving into Chickasaw Nation. There is no record for Loiuisa after the
1880 census in Cass County, Texas.

Joseph Sanford Jenkins' farm was next to Louisa Christian's farm when both
their spouses died. They married but kept their separate farms and
households. It is thought that Joseph sold the Jenkins farm before moving to
Indian Territory in about 1890, with his son Joseph Asa and Louisa's son
Joseph Benjamin Christian and others. Perhaps Louisa chose to remain on the
Christian homestead instead of moving to new territory with her husband.

However, if Louisa did in fact stay in Cass County, when her son Joseph
Benjamin Christian and second husband left, that would mean that her son had
to travel back to Cass County to handle the sale of her farm about 10 years
later. Why would Louisa have stayed behind? On the other hand, it is likely
that the year is vaguely remembered. We know from other sources that the
Jenkins-Christian families moved to Chickasaw Nation in 1890 or very close to
that. Joseph Sanford Jenkins died in Marlow, Chickasaw Nation, on the
Chisholm Trail, in 1893.

---------------
Joseph Benjamin Christian
Birth abt 1835 Tennessee, USA
Death abt 1870 Cass County, Texas, USA

Few details are known about Joseph B Christian. Even his parents are
uncertain, although there are other apparently related Christian families in
the Cass County, Texas area and nearby counties, no clear connection of Joseph
has been made.

No birth record or census record has been found, but it appears from other
family information he was born about 1835, and died some time before 1872,
when his wife Louisa Taylor Christian married again.

The family has not been found in the 1860 or 1870 census. It is estimated he
and Louisa married about 1853, based on the birth date of their first child
Frances Elizabeth on 7 July 1854.

No death or burial record has been found. Many people in that era were buried
on the family land, with no official report in government records. Their farm
was in Cass County, near Bryans Mill. Joseph and Louisa's children were born
on this farm.

His wife Louisa continued to live on the farm. Louisa maintained the farm and
the residence for her children, even after she married farming neighbor,
widower J S Jenkins.

Burial Non-Cemetery Burial
Thought to be buried on the Christian family farm, near Bryans Mill, Cass
County, Texas. No death or burial record has been found.

This census entry tells us that Joe and Emily's father Joseph Benjamin
Christian Sr was born in Tennessee. The agricultural schedule for this census
also reports details of Joseph's arm. Here we include just the basic facts of
the farm. Several others of families related to the Jenkins through marriage
are also listed ont eh same page as Joseph.

The 1880 census also had a listing for a Ben Christian in Precinct 1 of Marion
County that might be part of this same family, perhaps a cousin of Joseph.
Marion County is just south of Cass County, and this precinct would have been
just a little south of the Christian family farm in Cass County. The primary
entry for this Ben Christian has not been found.

This census record name would also be consistent with the name reported by
some famliy sources for Lousia Taylor's husband, Benjamin Franklin Christian.
The Benjamin Franklin Christian found in several genealogies seems instead to
have been the father of Joseph Benjamin Christian Sr, Louisa's husband. Ages
do not match for Ben F Christian to be Louisa's husband and father of her son
Joseph Benjamin Christian, who was only 25 years old in 1880.

Joseph Benjamin married Catherine Jane Smith in 1883.

Harold Christian reports this marriage in the Jenkins Family History (private
paper):
"Joseph [Asa Jenkins] said he loaded all of his possessions into two covered
wagons for the move. It took him sixteen days to make the trip from Dalton,
Texas, to Healdton, Indian Territory. Two of Joseph's brother-in-laws are
believed to have been living in Healdton at that time. One is believed to have
been Joseph Benjamin Christian and his wife Catherine Smith, sister of Hester
Ann."
-- Jenkins Family History (Private Paper), p 13

We know from Jenkins Family History that several of the Christian and Jenkins
households moved together to Chickasaw Nation around 1890. In the 1900 census
of Indian Territory, we find Joe and Catherine Christian in Marlow.

The last child Joseph L here is later known as Leroy in some sources. See the
obituary of his sister Zora below. Minnie was Mineola. Note that the 1900
census, as we often find, reports one year different from the year of birth
reported by her grandson, Loyd Farris.

"Mineola Christian Battles (1890 - 1972) was my maternal grandmother. Her

The years married indicates Joseph and Catherine married about 1884. The
report in 1910, though, would seem to put the marriage in 1883, which matches
the date in the marriage records, December 1883.

The birth places of the children seems to indicate that Joseph and Catherine
did not moved into Indian Territory until within a year of the 1900 census.
Yet the notes from family sources reported above by Harold Christan seem to
indicate that Joseph and Catherine had already moved or moved about the same
time as Joseph Asa Jenkins which was in about 1890. Joseph Asa's father J S
Jenkins moved with them and he is buried in Marlow, Oklahoma.

This may be accounted for in another story concerning Louisa and the Christian
family farm, mentioned incidentally in a story about the Funsten famliy.
Maybe Joseph Benjamin Christian did not move to Indian Territory until after
his mother died in 1900. No death or burial information has been found for
Louisa, and her husband Joseph Sanford Jenkins died in Marlow, Chickasaw
Nation, in 1893.

Joseph and Catherine's 11-year-old son Ern (Ernest in 1920) was born in Texas
about 1899. Joseph Christian's brother-in-law Joseph Asa Jenkins (married to
Catherine's sister Hester) moved into Chickasaw Nation about 1890, and would
have already been in Marlow when Joseph and Catherine moved there. Note that
Catherine Jane's middle initial here is C.

The entries for Zoar (Zora) and Thomas are curious. They are both reported as
married (note they were both single in 1900). But there is an arrow from
Zoar's entry to Thomas' entry, and to the right of her name has been written
"wife," with what looks like an "H" (for husband) to the right of Thomas'
name.

This seems to indicate that Zoar O is Thomas' wife! But they were both listed
with the Christian last name in the 1900 census as children of Joseph and
Catherine and Single, at age 15 and 13 respectively. At these ages they were
highly unlikely to be married. So this entry makes no sense.

Notes for Joseph Oscar CHRISTIAN

Joseph Oscar Christian was called Joe by some of the family, or at some stages
of his life, and by Oscar at other times or by other people. In the 1900
census he is Oscar. His uncle William (Bud) Jenkins, in a list of birth dates
of all of Willie Christian's children, enters him as Joe. In his WWI draft
registration his full name is Joseph Oscar Christian.

There is a discrepancy between sources on the birth date of Joe (Oscar) as on
some of the other children. His WWI draft registration reports his birth as
10 April 1886. You would tend to think this is correct, since he signed the
card. (Incidentally, he signed with his full name Joseph Oscar Christian.)

But other family sources report a different date, which also differs from the
birth date recorded in the 1900 census. The latter looks like May 1887, and
is listed after William, whose birthday in that census is October 1886. There
are only 7 months between these two birth dates, so something is wrong. The
date looks pretty clear, compared to some of the others, which are scrawled or
smeared.

To complicate this, the age reported in the 1900 census is 18. He is listed
after William, who is age 13, which matches his reported birth date of October
1886, for the June 1900 census. So the age seems wrong, since older children
are normally listed first. But it is a funny 8, and looks like a later
over-write.

Hse/Fam #189

William Christain Son W M Oct 1886 13 TX England Miss Farmer
Oscar Christain Son W M May 1887 (? 1882) 18 (?) TX England Miss Farmer

Several of the ages in the census for the Christian family were corrected, by
a reviewer apparently, to match the birth date and year. For instance
William's age had first been written as 14, but since his birthday was
reported as October, this was corrected to 13. It looks like Oscar's age
should be 13, but the original number looks like a 1 or 7 (11 or 17),
overwritten to make it look more like an 8, for 18. So who knows?

Oscar's birth date recorded by his uncle, in a list of all of Amanda and
Willie's children, was 5 March 1886. So this gives us three different birth
dates for Joseph Oscar.

In the 1910 census, Joseph is living between his brother William and Pete. He
is now married toe Delia E Riggins. (Her name is here spelled Dilia.) I
learned Delia's maiden name from a Christian genealogy developed by a
descendant, Audre Mari, in London, Arkansas.

In the original document of this draft registration, Joe's wife's name is
written clearly as Della. Originally I had used this as the name, since the
census spellings differed, and are often unreliable. But Audrey Christian,
wife of a descendant, has the name in her genealogy as Delia E Riggins. This
is actually consistent with the last sentence of the spelling attempts in the
censuses of 1910 and 1920, where the name is Delia and Dillia. Thus I have
changed the name to Delia.

Living next door to Joe and Delia in 1920 are Delia's parents John and Martha
Riggins and two of their children, Viola 22 and Oscar 16.

The 1930 census reports a Joe Christian in Los Angeles, California, who
matches details of our Joseph Oscar who was married to Delia Riggins. This
record reports that Joe is divorced. He is a boarder in a home in Los
Angeles, California. I have not found details about the divorce or the move
to California. The California location does match a death record reporting
the mother of Joseph O Christian to be surnamed Jenkins.

However, the 1930 census in Los Angeles, California, reports that Joe was born
in Oklahoma, but several public records, early census reports, and other facts
about this family indicate he was born in Texas. His WWII draft card reports
his birth place as Cass County, Texas, where the Christian family lived before
moving to Indian Territory.

The Christian genealogy that gave me information about Delia has no mention of
the divorce. But by the same token, it does not give information about the
marriage either. However, there is another record in Washita County,
Oklahoma, which eluded me for long. This appears to be our Joseph Oscar,
since names of the children match for the most part.

But the name of the wife there is Macey, while previous information has
indicated Joseph Oscar's wife is Delia E. Oscar's 1942 WWI registration
reported his contact as Macie Christian at his own address. Ancestry.com's
transcription as Mary was a mistranscription of Macey. Ancestry.com
mistranscribes the wife's name as Mary.

If seems likely that the last child is Fern, but the enumerator forgot to add
the cross on the F. Her name is defintely Fern in 1940. The birth place of
Tern (Fern) and her parents indicates she has the same parents as the other
children. Macey here is reported born in Arkansas, as was Delia. So why is
the mother of any of the children reported as born in Oklahoma? Fern, at 5
months of age, would be the daughter of Macey. The census says Macey and Joe
(Oscar) have been married one year.

After quite some time I finally found Delia in the 1930 census, living alone
and reported divorced.

Oscar was reported in the 1935 Tucson, Arizona, City Directory, along with his
brother Charles H and his wife Tresel. No wife is reported for Oscar. Why
was Macey not reported? This is surely the right Oscar Christian, since his
brother Charles and wife Tresel are also reproted there.

But in the 1940 census, Joe and Macie were reported back in Oklahoma, in
Hobart, Kiowa County, next to Washita County. Note that he 1940 census
reports that in 1935, Oscar, Macie and their children wre in Kiowa County,
where they were reported in 1930. So perhaps the Oscar Christian reported in
the 1935 Tucson directory is a diffferent Oscar.
