Notes for James Haskell CLEMENT

-------------------
James Haskell "Hack" Clement
Birth Feb. 22, 1920 Danville, Yell County, Arkansas
Death Oct. 16, 2012 Denison, Grayson County, Texas

JAMES HASKELL "HACK" CLEMENT, 92, former resident of Marlow, Oklahoma, died
Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Stonebrook Assisted Living, Denison, Texas,
following a short illness.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 20, 2012, in the
Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Broughton and Bro. Joe Price
officiating. Burial will be in the Marlow Cemetery under the direction of
Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow.

Family visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the
funeral home.

Born February 22, 1920, in Danville, Arkansas, to Alice and James W. "Willie"
Clement, Hack lived most of his life in the Marlow and Central High area. He
was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother. He has one
surviving sister, Betty Jo Smith of Clovis, California.

Hack attended Marlow High School where he was an All-State football player. He
married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Hill of Marlow, on January 1,
1942.

He enlisted at Fort Sill in March of 1942, and was sent overseas, where he
received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during World War II. Upon
returning from the service in 1944, Hack worked for a time as a roughneck and
ran the Whiterock Café before joining the US Postal Service in 1955 where he
was a city, then rural letter carrier for many years, retiring in 1983.

Hack and Virginia had three daughters, Jimmie Kay, Sandy and Sally. Hack was
preceded in death by Virginia in August of 1977, and by his oldest daughter,
Jimmie Clement Mathis in May of 2008.

In November 1978, Hack married long-time Marlow resident and schoolteacher,
Marian Eaves Gregston, which added another daughter to the family, Susan
Gregston.

In addition to being a member of the Masonic Lodge and VFW, Hack was active in
the church where he served as treasurer and deacon at Denton Baptist Church
for many years, and later as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Marlow. He
enjoyed cooking, fishing, tinkering with cars, gardening and building
birdhouses. An avid football fan, he seldom missed a Marlow Outlaw football
game. He and Marian enjoyed traveling throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas and
Missouri with an occasional trip to California to visit family. He especially
enjoyed spending time with grandkids and great-grandkids. Hack will best be
remembered by family and friends not only for his loving and caring ways, but
also for his raisin and pumpkin pies and holiday peanut brittle.

Survivors include his wife Marian, Stonebrook Assisted Living, Denison, Texas;
children Sandy and Mike Emmons, Sally and Steve Sparks, Susan and Billy Ewing,
all currently living in Texas, and Lon Mathis of Marlow; grandkids, Sheena
Mays and Brian Andrews; and great-grandkids, Tonya, Alin and Patrick Jr. Mays,
and James Andrews.

Pallbearers will be Steve Sparks, Brian Andrews, Patrick Mays, Rick Worden,
Bill Shook and Roger Andrews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lon Mathis, Jack Graves and Mike Emmons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Hack's name to
the American Cancer Society or Home Hospice (www.homehospice.org).

Spouses:
Virginia L. Clement (1922 - 1977)
Marian Eaves Clement (1922 - 2013)

Notes for Lola Montez CLEMENTS

Lola's family name is spelled variously Clements, Clemons, Clemens in various
documents. The to latter spellings are on death certificates of her children.
This seems to indicates the name was not normally Clements by the family, but
I cannot determine the previous generation spelling. Most genealogies have
the family name as Clements.

According to the following genealogy, Lola married William Walker Terry 10
years before their first child was born. There may have been other children
who died young. This Elliott genealogy has no documentation for most facts,
but has such detail that it appears to be reporting from family sources. i
consider this source credible.

The Elliott genealogy reprots that Lola died in Buffalo Gap, a little
southwest of Abilene, Texas.

years older than Lucinda, and birth in South Carolina. Columbus Black appears
to be a boarder in the home. Note also the black family named Loughridge
enumerated as members of the family and household. These would likely be
former slaves who are now free, but chose to stay. The woman Hannah appears
to be a widow working as a Domestic Servant now, supporting her three children.

------------------------

There is a discrepancy in the data provided in the Smoky Mountain genealogy.
J Mack is reported born in 1853, but his mother is reported born only in 1844,
which is impossible. Another one or more genealogies reports Mack's birth
year as 1863, not 1853.

Shell's genealogy below also reports that John Mack and Rhoda were marreid in
1860, which all fits together nicely. The year 1863 is confirmed by his death
certificate and grave. His death certificate shows the date was originally
typed in with the typo as 1853, but was corrected by hand to read 1863.

Also, Thelma is the name of the first daughter of Mack with his second wife
Mary Hall in 1907. The 1900 census also lists the child named as Fred in the
above list, under the name Frederick A Clevenger, reported in 1900 as born
July 1885. Frederick may be the one with descendants in Oklahoma.

"John 'PerJohn' Mack Clevenger (son of Alexander Clevenger and Elizabeth Free)
was born 1836, and died date unknown. He married Rhoda Davis on 1860, daughter
of Elias Davis and Julie Belle. [Son] John Mack Clevenger, b. 1863, d. Abt.
1928."

The Free or Clevenger Cemetery is an abandoned cemetery with many damaged and
missing stones.

Free Cemetery
Located on property of Rome Sisk, off the Cosby Road behind the home of Floyd
Brannam.
There are over fifty graves in this cemetery. The majority are marked with
only plain rocks. The cemetery was first called the Hollaway, then the
Clevenger, then the Free.
Buried here without markers are George Free and Jane Free. George was a
brother of Salley Free. There are also some Negro slaves buried here.

Free-Clevenger Cemetery
Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee USA

This abandoned cemetery is in a remote wooded area just south of Newport,
Tenn., (about mile southwest of Lowe's "big box" store) on property owned by
Carl "Duke" Sisk. The earliest burials here around 1805-1810 were Holloways,
mostly children in graves without permanent markers. So it was known initially
as the Holloway graveyard. Most burials over the next century were Frees and
Clevengers. I first visited the site on April 13, 2013, with Duke's guidance.

There are at least 50 graves here, most unmarked (some marked only by sinking
below ground level) and 2 dozen or more marked with fieldstones. Some of the
stones have chiseled inscriptions that are unreadable due to more than a
century of aging. Some headstones have been smashed by fallen trees, such as
the one that spared Abagil Clevenger's grave marker. (Near the end of an
online posting by Kirksey Database are notes on this cemetery.)

"My greatest find has not been online, but with discovery of the
long-forgotten and neglected Free-Clevenger Cemetery. Here I've found many
missing links in my Clevenger lineage. And here, much to my elation, I've
found the Civil War memorial stone for my Great-great-grandfather Sgt. Alex
Clevenger, who was among the very few Cocke Countians to serve in the Union
Army." [The marker says "Sgt A Clevenger Co A 3 Tenn Cav"]
