Amon was born in Georgia. Genealogies report his parents as: Parents: Michael Cline 1795 - 1860 Rachael Susannah Amburn 1796 - 1848 Amon's age varies in censuses, but generally indicates birth as late as 1847. This would have made him only 3 years old in 1850, again not believable when he was reported as 10 years old. His age in 1930 was reported as 96 years old, matching age reported in 1910 of 76, which makes birth about 1834. In 1850, Amon was in his parents' household, but reported as 10 years old, which is wy young. He shoud have been about 143 then. But this seems to be the correct Amon cline. The family was in Polk county, Tennessee, which is in the southeast corner of Tennessee, sharing a border with Cherokee County, North Carolina, and Fannin county, Georgia. His age in 1860, after ghe married Sarah Ann Frances Manders, was age 24, which matches other sources. 1850 Federal Census, Polk County, Tennessee, 27 August, Civil District 1, p 388, Hse #23, Fam #24 John Cline 45 M Carpenter $550 Real Estate b N NC [b abt 1805] Elizabeth Cline 44 F b NC [b abt 1806] Maston A Cline 23 F b NC Farmer [b abt 1827] Louisa Cline 23 F b NC [b abt 1827] John F Cline 19 F b NC Farmer [b abt 1831] Miles Cline 16 M b NC Farmer [b abt 1834] Sarah C Cline 15 M b NC [b abt 1835] Wm M Cline 12 M b NC [b abt 1838] ** Amon C Cline 10 M b GA [b abt 1840] ** James D Cline 7 M b Tenn [b abt 1843] Rhoda E Cline 4 M b Tenn [b abt 1846] Frances M Cline 9mos M b Tenn [b abt Dec 1849] He married in 1855. He was with Company A. 43 Regiment, Georgia Infantry. The following is the history of Amon Cline's military duties. 43rd Regiment, Georgia Infantry 43rd Infantry Regiment, organized at Big Shanty, Georgia, in April, 1862, contained men from Cherokee, Pickens, Cobb, Hall, Forsyth, Jefferson and Jackson counties. The unit moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi, where it was placed under the command of General Barton in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It took an active part in the conflicts at Chickasaw Bayou and Champion's Hill, and was captured when Vicksburg fell. After being exchanged, the 43rd was assigned to General Stovall's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It was prominent in the numerous campaigns of the army from Missionary Ridge to Nashville, and ended the war in North Carolina. In December, 1863, it totalled 283 men and 251 arms, and in November 1864, there were 130 fit for duty. On April 26, 1865, the unit surrendered. Its commanding officers were Colonels Hiram P Bell, Skidmore Harris, Henry C Kellogg, and Major William C Lester. -- original source unknown, Posted on ancestry by tawquish 28 Oct 2008, accessed 4 May 2017 ---------------- 1870 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Georgia, 15 August, Harbins District, Canton, p 249, Hse/Fam #290 Cline, Amon 33 M W Farmer $0 Real Estate Value $0 Personal b NC [b abt 1837] Cline, Sarah A F 31 F W Keeping House b GA Cannot read or write [born abt 1839] Cline, Elizabeth E 12 F W Keeping House b GA [born abt 1858] Cline, James A 5 M W b GA [born abt 1855] Cline, Nancy M E 3 F W b GA [born abt 1867] Cline, Buena Vista 1 F W b GA [born abt 1869] 1880 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Georgia, 9 June, Harbins, Georgia Militia District 1008, Enumeration District 21, page 14, Hse/Fam #117 Cline, Amon W M 44 Head Farmer NC NC NC Cline, Sarah Ann W F 44 Wife Keeping House GA GA GA Cline, James E W M 16 Son At Home on Farm GA NC GA Cline, Bunevista [sic] W F 11 Dau With Mother GA NC GA Cline, Susan E W F 9 Dau GA NC GA Cline, Benjamin F W M 6 Son GA NC GA 1900 Federal Census, Pickens County, Georgia, 19 June, Town District (Jasper), District 39, page 13B, Hse #178, Fam #180 Cline, Amon Head W M -- 1833 67 Married 45 years NC NC NC Farmer Owns Cline, Sarah A F Wife W F Aug 1838 61 Married 45 years 7 children/5 living GA GA GA Wilson, Susan E Dau W F Nov 1871 28 Married 12 years 0 children GA NC GA Cowart, Vista Dau W F June 1869 30 Married 2 years 2 children/1 living GA NC GA Cowart, Bonnie M Gdau W F Oct 1899 8mos GA GA GA Note that both the daughters are married but neither husband is in this household. According to family sources Sarah died after they moved to Oklahoma, where they were living in Wray Township of Jefferson County. Her memorial on Find a Grave reports that she died in 1904 in Jefferson County, Oklahoma. So Amon and Sarah Ann moved to Oklahoma, where she died shortly afterward. Amon returned to Georgia apparently to marry and bring his new wife back to Oklahoma Territory. Their marriage record records that Amon and Rebecca Jane Pitman in Cherokee County, where Amon and Sarah were living before they moved to Oklahoma Territory. Amon married Rebecca Jane in Cherokee County. According to family sources Sarah died after they moved to Oklahoma, where they were living in Wray Township of Jefferson County. The year of death is reported as 1907. The place of death is confirmed in Sarah Ann's memorial later posted on Find a Grave. But she died in 1904, according to her gravestone. This is consistent with the marriage record of Amon to his second wife Rebecca Jane Pitman in 1906. He went back to Georgia, and they married in Amon's old place of residence, Cherokee County. They then he took her to Oklahoma Territory. They are enumerated there in the 1910 census, and this is reported as Rebecca's first marriage, consistent with the marriage license title of Miss. Bonnie's age was first written as 7/12, then corrected to 8/12, which matches the reported birth month of October 1899. In the 1910 census, Vista is in her own household with her husband Martin and their two children. Dorothy Mullinnix reports in her Mullinnix Files (http://www.gencircles.com/users/annmull/1/data/4799) that Vista Cline was the second wife of Martin Monroe Cowart. Martin's first wife Annie America (Americus) West died in about 1897. Martin and Vista's daughter Bonnie Mae Cowart was born in October 1899, according to the 1900 census. This means they were married about 1898. In the 1910 census, Bonnie is reported as only 9 years old, but she was already 8 months old int eh 1900 census, and her birth date reported as October 1899. 1910 Federal Census, Pickens County, Georgia, 15 April, Jasper, District 128, page 2A, Hse/Fam #22 Cowart, Martin M Head M W 50 Married 12 years GA GA GA House Painter Rent [b abt 1860] Cowart, Vista B Wife F W 39 Married 12 years GA GA GA [b abt 1861] Cowart, Bonnie M Dau F W 9 Single GA GA GA [b abt Aug 1901] Cowart, Paul L Son M W 6 Single GA GA GA [b abt Aug 1904] In 1920, Vista is a widow living with her daughter Bonnie Mae Martin. 1920 Federal Census, Pickens County, Georgia, 19 January, Truck Wheel District, Enumeration District 143, page 9B, Hse #165, Family #170 Martin [should be Lance], James Head Rents M W 34 GA GA GA Farmer (b abt 1885) Martin [Lance], Bonnie Mae Wife F W 20 GA GA GA (b abt 1899) Martin [Lance], Dellta Dau F W 14 GA GA GA (b abt 1905) Martin [Lance], Ollie Marie Dau F W 10 GA GA GA (b abt 1909) Martin [Lance], Grady Atherton Son M W 3mos GA GA GA (b abt Sept 1919) Cowart, Vista Mother-in-Law F W Widow 49 GA GA GA (b abt 1850) ---------------- Buena Vista Cline Cowart Birth 1868 Georgia, USA Death 1933 Georgia, USA Parents: Amon Cline (1833 - 1932) Sarah Ann Frances Manders Cline (1838 - 1904) Spouse Martin M Cowart (1859 - 1919) daughter Bonnie Mae Cowart Lance (1900 - 1932) Siblings: Elizabeth Cline Smith (1858 - 1917) James A. I always thought maybe 'the baby' died, but my mom, who is still as sharp as a bell at almost 90, said that it was Elizabeth, who was my Grandfather's mother, who had been injured, and the accident caused her to be sort of crippled, and pretty crabby because of it. Of course, my mom wasn't even in the family till 1945, but she took care of my Grandpa Amon Smith, after he was diagnosed with diabetes as an adult, and he must have told her all the juicy family stories!" -- Nancy Smith Ward, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 03 May 2017 1860 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Georgia, 3 August, Harbins District, PO Wallesca, page 224, Hse #1619, Fam #1729 Amon Cline 24 M Laborer $0 Real Estate $200 Personal b GA [b abt 1836] Sarah A Cline 20 F b GA [b abt 1940] Elisabeth Cline 2 M born GA [b abt 1858] 1870 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Georgia, 15 August, Harbins District, Canton, p 249, Hse/Fam #290 Cline, Amon 33 M W Farmer $0 Real Estate Value $0 Personal b NC [b abt 1837] Cline, Sarah A F 31 F W Keeping House b GA Cannot read or write [born abt 1839] Cline, Elizabeth E 12 F W Keeping House b GA [born abt 1858] ---------------- Elizabeth Cline Smith Birth Mar. 17, 1858 Death Jan. 13, 1917 Parents: Amon Cline (1833 - 1932) Sarah Ann Frances Manders Cline (1838 - 1904) Spouse Rufus Smith (1857 - 1928) Siblings: James A Cline (1864 - 1953) Buena Vista Cline Cowart (1868 - 1933) Susan Elviry Cline Wilson (1871 - 1953) Benjamin Franklin Cline (1874 - 1922) Burial Terral Cemetery, Terral, Jefferson County, Oklahoma, Row D Created by Jean Oct 05, 2007 -- Find A Grave Memorial #21975840, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21975840 ----------------

James is usually reported with the middle intiial E, but in 1870 he is James A. This could be due to a dialectic pronunciation of the letter E, which sounds like A in American contry and mountain dialects. 1870 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Georgia, 15 August, Harbins District, Canton, p 249, Hse/Fam #290 Cline, Amon 33 M W Farmer $0 Real Estate Value $0 Personal b NC [b abt 1837] Cline, Sarah A F 31 F W Keeping House b GA Cannot read or write [born abt 1839] Cline, James A 5 M W b GA [born abt 1865] 1880 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Georgia, 9 June, Harbins, Georgia Militia District 1008, Enumeration District 21, page 14, Hse/Fam #117 Cline, Amon W M 44 Head Farmer NC NC NC Cline, Sarah Ann W F 44 Wife Keeping House GA GA GA Cline, James E W M 16 Son At Home on Farm GA NC GA [born abt 1864] 1930 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 2 April, Starr Township, District 31, page 1A, Hse #/Fam #1 Cline, James E Head Rents M W 65 First married at age 24 GA NC GA Farmer Cline, Emma L Wife F W 55 First married at age 16 GA GA GA Cline, Danner (?)
