Notes for Lida B COCHRAN

The name is more often found as Lyda or Lida, and it is likely this was
actually the spelling more commonly used. I even found the Social Security
records recording her name as Lida B Criswell.

Though some early patchy sources seemed to indicate the actual name was Lydia,
it appears it was likely Lida. The only document I have found where it is
spelled Lydia is the 1900 census, which is not very reliable, being filled
with all kinds of errors of spelling and dates and birth states.

In October 2008, I received information from Libby Beliew, a granddaughter of
Lida's sister Emma Jane Cochran. Libby says "You are correct in your notes
that her name was Lida (pronounced LIE-da) and not Lydia as some records say.
Although she was probably named for her maternal aunt, Lydia Hanna."

In 1900 it appears to be Lida's family living next door to Thomas' family.
Her mother is a widow managing the home with 6 children. Lydia is 13 years
old. The family name is spelled Cocran (for Cochran).

Lyda/Lida was married to a McSwain before marrying Thomas Criswell. For a
long time I could find no connection to identify this McSwain. Only in
November 2011 in a new round of searches, I discovered Lida's marriage record
and found that she had married Albert McSwain. The ages fit Albert McSwain,
son of William McSwain and Sarah Lowe.

In the 1910 census in Prairie Township, Arkansas County, Lydia is married to
Thomas Criswell, at age 24, and they have been married 4 years. It is his
first marriage, but her second. Living with them is Albert McSwain reported
as the "Step-son" of Thomas; Lydia (Lida) is shown as in her 2nd marriage.

Lucious H Criswell, reported here as 3 years old, was born 20 December 1916
and died 26 August 1921 and s buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel,
Arkansas County, Arkansas. He shares a grave with his brother Alfred P
Criswell, born 26 January 1907 and died 15 December 1907.

In 1930, this son of Lida is reported as Lee. It appears that his name was
Albert Lee McSwain.

1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 21 April, District 25, Page
7A, Prairie Township, Ethel & Point Rd, Hse #124, Fam #125

Criswell, Lyda Wife Fem W 43 M age at first marriage 15 AR MS MS
McSwain, Lee Son Male W 25 Ark Ark Ark

Lee's age matches the age of Albert in 1910. Lee is reported as son of Thomas
rather than step-son. This may indicate that Thomas adopted Albert Lee.

Information in 1930 is not in the same format as in 1910, age at first
marriage is reported, but not how long these tow have been married. I note
that in 1910, Albert was 5 years old, and Lydia is 24. She has been married
to Thomas Criswell 4 years. This would mean she was first married at least
two years or so before her second marriage. This would put her age at first
marriage about 18.

The 1930 census, however, says she was 15 when first married. If this is
correct, then she and her McSwain husband were married about 4 years before
Albert was born. Her first husband would have died about the time Albert Lee
was born, or soon thereafter. There is about a year's period between the
birth of Albert and the second marriage. Lyda and Thomas married about 1906,
to have been married 4 years before the census of 1930. That census was
April, so they would have married between January and April in 1906.

It appears that Thomas and Lyda moved to Texas. It was in Texas that Lida's
Social Security Number was issued.

Born 14 Apr 1887
Died 15 Jul 1988
Last Residence 76365 Henrietta, Clay, Texas
SSN 450-86-4730 issued Texas 1965

The Texas Death Index reports her death with the same date as SSDI, but gives
the location as Wichita County. I expect she died in a hospital in Wichita
Falls, Wichita County, a little north of Henrietta.

In the 1910 census, Samuel T Cochran is reported as 10 years old. He was born
after 1 June 1900, however, since he does not appear in the 1900 census of
this family. The census date in 1910 was 15 April. So he was actually not
yet 10 years old at census time, or by the date the enumerator actually
recorded this family on 14 May.

Note that William is reported as 3/4 Indian (Choctaw, though in reality he is
Chickasaw), even though his father was White! He should be no more tha 1/2
Indian. But the report on his Chickasaw registration informs us his mother
was also half white, so William is actually only 1/4 Chickasaw. Even more
surprising is that his children are reported with an even higher percentage,
at 7/8, even though their mother also is White! Someone did not understand
math. A similar error occurs in the report for William's half brothers in the
house next door. William is living next door to his widowed mother Fannie
Colbert and two of her sons. Math was not the strong suit of the enumerators!

William and his children were listed in the 1902 Indian Census.

The percentage reports in 1900 are accurate.

A transcription summary has the date of WIlliam's new Chickasaw Enrollment
Census card as 25 September 1902. But his original Choctaw card reports it
was cancelled and the information transferred to the new Chickasaw card on 14
October 1902 The actual enrollment date stamped on the Chickasaw card has two
dates, 6 Mar 1903 for William and the children and 16 Nov 1904 for Carrie,
when her file was transferred from her separate Choctaw registration as an
intrermarried white card #529.

William and his family, in a line with his sister Minnie Lee Thompson and his
mother Frances Colbert Green East, was listed in the final Chickasaw roll of
citizens by blood. This list was compiled from the information on the 1902
census cards for each family. The broader list has additional hand notes from
later dates giving information on cancellations, deaths, modifications, etc.
None of those annotations appear on this page.

In the 1910 census, the Cochrans are now correctly identified as Chickasaw.
Willie, who was reported as 7 years old in 1902-1903, is missing from, the
1910 census, so we may presume she died in the interim. A new child named
Vaughn is reported in 1910 as age 7, so he must have been born later in 1903
after the publication of the 1903 final roll based on the 1902 census cards.
A separate card approved in 1905 reported Vaughn born 10 February 1903.

There was an additional child born after the final 1902 list (which was the
basis for the 1903 "final" roll), as reflected int eh 1910 census. This
reproted that Carry (Carrie) had had 5 chioldren but only three were living.
A child named Etta fits that gap, buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in Marietta,
Oklahoma, as are many members of this famliy lineage. THe 1903 list was
prepared from the 1902 names. Etta grave says she was born on 14 July 1902,
about the time of the census.

On this census page, their neighbors on one side are Chickasaw and on the
other side are Choctaw. The fourth family on the page is also Choctaw. All
these families are mixed either White or Negro as reported on this census. As
a general pattern, these families graduallly faded into the "White" stream,
and are generally reported as White in subsequent censuses, as reflected in
the 1920 census following.

In 1920, the Cochrans are all reported as White. They are no longer in the
city, but now in Hickory Township, west of Marietta. Will is no longer
reported as a Marshall, but is now a farmer.

Notes for Sabra Jane COGGINS

In 1870, Sabra is a 16-year-olld in her parents' home a few doors away form the
Barnett series of households in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Before
1880 she married Micajah Cicero Barnett.

In 1880 she is reported as Sabre. Her gravestone has only initials, S J. In
her memorial on Find a Grave she is reported as Sallie Jane. Sallie is the
common nickname for Sarah and has been used as a given name in its own right.
While her proper name seems to be Sabra, she apparently may have gone by
Salile among her family.

Note that Micajah Cuicero's wife is named Sabre in 1880, and in 1870 it was
spelled Sabra. Her grave has only initial S J. Her name has been reported on
her Find-a-Grave memorial as Sallie Jane Coggins. Sallie is normally a
nickname for Sarah. Perhaps she chose or was given Sallie as a nickname, even
though it appears her name was Sabra.

Notes for Adolphus L COHRON

The 1920 census reports that Adolphus was born in Texas, and other records
indicate that the siblings born before him and after him were born in Erath
County, Texas, where the family was living at the time of the 1920 census.

But a detailed genealogy of the family reports he was born in Sugden,
Jefferson County, Oklahoma. The Social Security Death Index reports the same
date as the genealogy, but reports no place of birth. The California Death
Index, however, does report that the birth was in Texas.

Adolphus Lee Cohron
B:07 MAR 1902 in Sugden, Jefferson, Oklahoma,
D:20 DEC 1977 in Bakersfield, Kern, California
Spouse Lilly Dicky 1905 -
-- Campbell-Wellborn,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12051120/person/-345196176?ftm=1

The genealogy reports one source for this Oklahoma birth place in the One
World Tree genealogy collection on Ancestry.com. One World Tree includes 7
genealogies, six of which report this same Oklahoma location as the [place of
birth. The 7th has no place of birth. None, however, report any source
documentation for this place of birth. I did find one which reports that the
place where Adolphus married Lilly Dicky was Sugden. It could be that this
one confused the place of marriage with the place of birth of Adolphus.
