The hand of the enumerator is almost illegible. Some of these names are
indecipherable, and I cannot see how the ancestry transcriber got some of the
names they came up with. I have tried to determine something close to the
possible letters intended by the enumerator.

The name transcribed by Ancestry as Patric is actually Felix. This was an
older brother of Tilman Porter Cohron. The age here of 19 in 1920 matches the
grave information for F L Cohron in Throckmorton Cemetery, Throckmorton
County, Texas. The dates given there for birth and death are 1901-1951.
Family sources indicate the full name of Felix was Felix Lacy. F L married
Marie Jackson, while Tilman married her half-sister Pauline Mae Jackson.

Many of the details of the members of these families have been analyzed in
email discussions and joint research of Marion Mixon, Wanda Tate Cox and
Orville Boyd Jenkins. This involved
family information, physical investigation of cemeteries, posted records from
censuses and other public documents, cemetery registers and analysis of these
and other sources.
Tilman's father's name is virtually unreadable here, appearing to have been
overwritten. Ancestry.com transcribes it as Tera, but in 1930 his name is
clearly W S Cohron. His mother in 1920 is Caldonia J, but in 1930 she is
called Carolina J.

In 1930, we find Tilman married to Pauline. From family sources we know this
to be Pauline Mae Jackson, daughter of Toliver and Elizabeth (Griffith)
Jackson of Parker County, Texas. From their ages we can tell they have been
married a little over a year.

Notice that both the Texas Death Index and the Social Security Death Index
spell his name Tillmon. This may indicate this was the formal way it was
spelled, though it appears as Tilman in censuses, and in family sources as
well.

My distant cousin and co-researcher Marion Mixon discovered that Tilman and
his wife Pauline were buried in different cemeteries:
"It appears Pauline Mae and Tilman P. Cohron are buried in two seperate
locations. Reseach indicates she is buried in Curtis Cemetery Weatherford,

which was his place of residence. However, the Texas Death Index reports that
he actually died in Stephens County, Texas. The date of death reported her is

Notes for William Sira COHRON

The name recorded for W S Cohron in the 1920 census is puzzling, but
characteristic of the unclear hand and errors of the enumerator on that page.
W S is listed with a basically unreadable name, appearing to have been
overwritten. Ancestry.com transcribes it as Tera, but in 1930 his name is
clearly W S Cohron. In 1920 W S's wife is correctly recorded as Caldonia J,

Note that there is about a three-year discrepancy between the ages and/or ages
of marriage of Payne and Allie. The date on the mrriage record in 1917, so
the age and age at marriage match on Payne's record but not Allie's.

The same problem is found in her daughter Violet's family records in the same
household. The reported age of Violet at marriage does not match the reported
as of her daughter Betty Jo as 4 years and 2 months. That would put Betty
Jo's birth before the marriage date. With Joe's reported age at marriage, it
would still be a year before the marriage. Ages and reported ages at marriage
are off.

Notes for Andrew Morgan COLBERT

Undocumented genealogies report that Andrew Morgan Colbert was born 1825 in
Cotton Gin Port, Monroe, Mississippi. This was before the Chickasaw Removal
in 1837.

---------------
Cotton Gin Port is a ghost town in Monroe County, Mississippi, United States.
... Cotton Gin Port was the first town in north Mississippi, although
initially it was part of Marion County in the Alabama Territory. The new
demarcation lines of 1820-21 put it in Mississippi. The site was located on
the east bank of the Tombigbee River at a crossing of vital Indian trails. It
was a base of expeditions of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1736 and
Vaudreuil in 1752. The Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad caused
extinction as the townfolk moved to the new town of Amory.

The early U.S. government built a cotton gin in 1801 at Cotton Gin Port as
part of a "plan of civilization" for the local Chickasaw Indians, and soon
became recognized as a Chickasaw Indian trading post. A road, Gaines Trace,
was built to the town in 1811 and 1812.

Notes for Francis COLBERT

I note that there is variation in census ages.

These age reports yield a likely birth year as follows:
Dawes 1898 age 67 born 1831
Census 1900 age 55 born Aug 1844
Census 1910 age 73 born 1836-7

Fanny is also reported by a genealogy as included in the 1855 Choctaw Roll,
Skullyville County, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (no age reported). The
Chickasaw History reports that Frances (spelled Francis there) was born 15 Aug
1831, matching the Dawes roll age in 1898. It is interesting that the two
Dawes records and the Chickasaw History's exact date match, while the censuses
are all different. I will report her birth as the Chickasaw records show it.

Frances (Fannie) had five marriages, and was widowed 5 times. Sherman says
she married her first husband, Samuel Hunter Cochran, about 1867. Sam was
born 10 October 1807 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, died 13 May 1884 in Indian
Territory. The Sherman genealogy reports one child from the Cochran marriage,
William Hunter Cochran, born February 1868 in Indian Territory.

This birth information comes from the 1900 census, which I transcribe below.
Sam Cochran is reported to have died in 1869. Frances married again in 1871.
In January 1870 she hired Toliver Green as a farmer, securing a residence
permit for him in Chickasaw Nation. This was the start of a permanent
residence for this Green family in Indian Territory and the State of Oklahoma.

Chickasaw Nation work permits indicate that Frances Cochran (spelled Chockrain
in the record) hired T Green (apparently Toliver Green) for one year as a
farmer, which was the basis for a residence permit issued to Green. In 1871,
Frances married Toliver Green's son Daniel David. The residence registration
records were found by Jackson-Green researcher Kati Jackson Cain in Chickasaw
Nation archives.

Other names included in the registration of residence permits in 1869 and 1870
were several Jackson names, who are likely family members of Abraham Jackson,
who married Toliver Green's daughter Talitha. Other records place Abraham and
other Jacksons and several members of this Green family in Chickasaw Nation
during the US Civil War. These residence permits for these families fills in
one major gap in their timeline.

"I have found permits for 'T. Green' and his license is issued under Francis
(Colbert) Cochran, now we also know how Daniel Green and Francis Colbert met.
There's also a permit for a William Jackson. He ended up married to a
Chickasaw woman named Annie Donovan."

and date above written.

Frances married her second husband Daniel David (Dan) Green on 8 October 1871,
in Indian Territory. I found the record of their marriage on the Chickasaw
History website, which had intriguing information about the Colbert family
tradition among the Chickasaws.

"She married Daniel Green in Berwyn, Pickens Co., Chick Nation, IT, 8 OCT
1871. (Daniel Green is #26909.) Daniel was born circa 1848. Daniel died before
1879. Marriage records show his name as 'David' but Dawes records for his son
give the father's name as 'Daniel'."

They lived in Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. The area
where they lived later became Love County, Oklahoma. Dan died in 1878, so
there is no census documentation of their marriage or family. In the 7 years
of their marriage, they had three children that are recorded by Sherman. The
names of the two boys are unusual and appear to include nickname forms of the
first son's first name, Reddick.

Reddick "Redie" Green
Daniel Redric Green
Minnie Lee Green

The second son's middle name Redric also looks like a variation of Reddick.
But their birth dates are different, Reddick in Feb 1869 and Daniel on 1 April
1872. A couple of other genealogies, that look like they all copied from each
other, also report these three children. Documentation is spotty on all these
genealogies. The Chickasaw History reports Redie (nickname for Reddick, or
Redrick) Jackson Green, born about 1871, later than dates in the genealogies.

The Chickasaw History reports the second son as simply Daniel:
"Daniel Green (#26910) was born in IT circa 1874. Daniel enrolled in Marietta,
Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, IT for the Dawes Chickasaw Roll on 3 OCT 1898
and appears on Dawes card number 1615.(1716)"
-- Chickasaw History, Francis Colbert,
http://www.chickasawhistory.com/colbert/i0026899.htm#i26899 (no longer online)

For a long time, I could not find any census record confirming the existence
of the child reported in the genealogy as Daniel Redric. The name Redric
looked like an error or a variation for Reddick, his older brother's name. I
have found no documentation of a middle name of Redric that some of the
genealogies have. But in 1900 he is in his widowed mother's household as Dan
Green. In September 2010, I found census entries that appeared to match this
reported child Daniel. The 1910 and 1930 censuses report him, however, as
Daniel G.

Fannie also had a third husband, Charles Adams, in about 1879, according to a
genealogy. This is also reported by the Chickasaw History (no longer online).

"She married Charles Adams circa 1879. (Charles Adams is #26911.) She
married Dr. Theophilus H. East in Berwyn, Pickens Co., Chick Nation, IT, 13
MAY 1884. They had no children." [Other sources report two children Charles
and Oliver.]

Charles was born in Georgia (no other information known) who died sometime
before 1884 when the Chickasaw History reports she married Theophilus East.
Other sources indicate the date was more like 1888. But then, too, they were
divorced then remarried. See details below. Theophilus was born about 1850
in Iowa.

Charles abandoned Fannie in October 1880, according to testimony in her suit
for divorce in 1881.

-----------------------
"Evidence taken in the divorce case of Francis Adams vs Charlie Adams."
Date of testimony not stated on this document page; based on the last
statement in the testimony, it would have been no later than 1 April, 1881.
[Note: The lines appear just as they are here with no punctuation. Some
letters are capitalized along in the sentence; I have not tried to duplicate
these. W M Dixon states he has been living there for five or six months, and
his testimony indicates he was there at least in early October. -- OBJ]

Summary:
Says he left her about the 1st of October 1880. Based on the testimonies, her
son by Charles Adams wasn't born before he left. So it must have been a short
union in early 1880.

Fannie married Dr Theophilus Wst in 1884. Marriage license information from
Chickasaw Nation shows Fannie and Theophilus East had two different wedding
ceremonies, 13 May 1884 and 12 April 1888.

The two ceremonies are recorded on the same page and record. I found these
transcriptions online in about 2008, but had not seen these documents myself
until I found them posted by researcher Cindy Pannell in September 2010.
Theophilus East reported to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs that there had
been some irregularity (which he does not specify) with the first ceremony or
recording and he and Fannie were remarried. (See Notes for Theophilus East.)

The Colbert family genealogy that had all these details about Fannie reported
that Theophilus and Fannie died the same year, 1910. But this can't be right,
since I found the 1900 census record for 1900 showing her as a widow named
Francis East. Perhaps the date of Theophilus' death was in 1900 (before the
census) instead of 1910. Or maybe she reported herself as a widow instead of
divorced again?

All those reported as Indian are designated as Choctaw. Chickasaw History
reports that they were first registered as Choctaw, then later switched their
registration to the Chickasaw Nation. The Colberts were Chickasaw, and came
to Indian Territory from Chickasaw Nation, Mississippi, in the Removal. The
reporting here as Choctaws is probably due to the earlier registration in
Choctaw Nation, before moving south into Chickasaw Nation.

Another interesting aspect of this report is that both Oliver and Dan are
reported as 3/4 Indian (whether Choctaw or Chickasaw). But for that to be
true, Daniel David Green, and Charles Adams as well, would have been full
blood. Adams could have been, coming from Georgia, but though Green came from
Georgia, we have no information that would indicate he and his family, my
lineal ancestors, were full blood Chickasaw, or as much as 1/2 or 1/4. We do
have some Cherokee in the line. So I cannot account for this report, other
than a math error on the part of the enumerator. There is a similar
discrepancy in fractions in the Cochran report below for Fannie's son William.

Oliver would be a son of Charles Adams. A genealogy reports 2 children of
Charles and Fannie, the other son being Charles, born about 1885 also in
Indian Territory. Dan is, of course, the son of Daniel David Green. Note
that Dan has already been married and widowed. This is confirmed in the 1920
census, where we are told that his marriage with Sarah Powell is the 2nd
marriage for both. There were apparently no children from Dan's first
marriage, and I have no name for the wife, nor even a reference.

Next door to Fannie and these two sons is another son, Hunter Wm Cochran.
This would be William Hunter, apparently the only child of Fannie's first
marriage with Samuel Hunter Cochran. As in Fannie's household, all those
reported as Indian are designated as Choctaw.

William is reported as 3/4 Indian (Choctaw, though in reality he is
Chickasaw), even though his father was White! So he is actually a 1/2 blood.
A greater error is made somehow with the children, who are reported as 7/8,
even though their mother also is White!

In 1902 there was an Indian census. The census cards report the tribal
affiliation, the Dawes roll number and the census card number. Fannie, her
children and grandchildren were registered. The reports of percentage of
Indian genetic heritage is more accurate.

Thanks to Green family genealogist Jamie Pannell for two documents she
procured for transactions by Francis. A land allotment card and Power of
Attorney she authorized for her son to represent her to get the allotment.

Francis was applying for the allotment of her portion of the Chickasaw Nation
lands in November 1903, when they were divesting the Nation and
individualizing the former tribal communal land in preparation for the merger
into a new state and assimilation of the Indian Nations into the general
population. This was a new policy of the US Federal government, already
accomplished with the plains Indian reservations in the Unassigned lands just
to the west of Chickasaw Nation, where the Oklahoma Territory had been
proclaimed in 1899.

Thanks to Jamie Pannell also for finding a registered mail receipt signed by
Frances. Note that the postmaster has filled her name in the from with the
normal feminine spelling of Frances. But she has signed it in the masculine
spelling. Other records also spelled her name the same as a man's name
Francis. This probably indicates that she and her family spelled it Francis,
rather than Frances as modern sensibilities might expect. Note that her son
William Hunter Cochran signed as her "agent" (representative). Her signature
on her assignment of Power of Attorney to William in 1907 indicates she could
not sign, making her mark at her name written for her.

In the 1910 census Fannie is living with her son Charles Adams. The entry is
curious. They are the second family group in Hse #85. The first family is a
white family named Ross, whose head is reported as Renting. But Fannie is
reported as Owning.

This age of Charles presents a problem, since this would make his born the
year or the year after Fannie married Theophilus East, after Charles' father,
Charles Adams Sr, had passed away. So this is unclear. This is also
inconsistent with the age reported in the 1902 Indian Census, which puts his
birth at about late 1880 or early 1881. One source reports that Fannie had no
children with Charles Adams. Yet both his sons in these censuses here were
born during the time after their marriage. Fannie's age is off also, since
she is only 2 years older than reported in 1902. Age 73 in 1910 would make
her born in 1837. So we have Fannie's birth reported as 1831, 1844 and 1837.

In the 1910 census Fannie and Charles and the hosting Ross family are living
next door to Fannie's son D G Green and his wife Sarah Powell in House #85,
with Sarah's parents also in that household.

The 1900 census reported Fannie not as Divorced, but as a widow. Perhaps this
was because she reverted back to her widow status that she had before she
married Theophilus. But they were divorced, not married.

Theophilus testified in his 1904 interview with the Dawes Commission in regard
to his citizenship in the Chickasaw Nation that Fannie had left him and they
divorced in about 1892 in Canadian County, Oklahoma Territory. The transcript
reports that he provided papers, but they were included in the transcription.

The Colbert family genealogy I found with all this great information reported
that Theophilus and Fannie died the same year, 1910. But death records report
that Theophilus died in 1917 in Colorado, from complications during surgery.

The name of her gravestone is spelled Francis, as are most of the documents
during her life.

Notes for George Tootemastubbe COLBERT

--------------------------
George Colbert

George Colbert, also known as Tootemastubbe (c. 1764-1839), was a Native
American leader of the Chickasaw people in the early 19th century. He
commanded 350 Chickasaw auxiliary troops, whom he had recruited, as a militia
captain under Andrew Jackson during the Creek War of 1813-1814. Later he
joined the US Army under Jackson for the remainder of the War of 1812.

At the time of Indian Removal, when he had succeeded his late brother Levi
Colbert as chief, he was a planter who owned significant land and more than
150 slaves in Mississippi, and a ferry in northwestern Alabama.

The second of six mixed-race sons of James Logan Colbert, a North Carolinian
settler of Scots descent and his second wife Minta Hoye, a Chickasaw, George
Colbert was born in present-day Alabama about 1764. As a youth he began to
rise in prominence in the Chickasaw nation, as he gained status from his
mother's clan as well as his actions. The Chickasaw had a matrilineal kinship
system, in which children were considered born into their mother's clan;
positions of hereditary leadership were passed through the mother's line.
...
He and his brothers Levi and James were among the primary negotiators of
treaties between his people and the United States government in the early 19th
century. The Chickasaw ended up ceding much of their land to the United States
in an attempt to preserve peace after repeated conflicts with settlers. The
Colberts received several valuable tracts for their service.

In the late 1830s, Colbert was serving as chief of the Chickasaw, following
his brother Levi Colbert. Together with most of his fellow Chickasaw, by 1839
he removed to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) with his family, taking 150 slaves
with him, under the Indian Removal Act. In the 1850s, his nephews Winston and
Holmes Colbert helped develop the constitution and government organization of
the Chickasaw in Oklahoma after removal.

Notes for James Logan COLBERT

James Logan Colbert is usually reported as born in "the Carolinas." Some
sources report he was born in Scotland. Contemporaneous sources tend to
report he was born in Carolina, and one close associate (cited below) reported
it was likely South Carolina. No sources I have found have provided any source
or documentation for the place of birth they report, except the passage quoted
below from Chickasaw History. I have found one that has a more specific
location in Scotland, Inverness. All report the same year of birth, 1721.

James Logan Colbert (son of D'Blainville Colbert) was born 1721 in Inverness,
Scotland, and died January 07, 1784 in Creek Nation, Alabama. He married Sopha
Minta Hoya. Children of James Logan Colbert and Sopha Minta Hoya are:
+Levi Colbert, b. 1759, Chickasaw Co., MS, d. June 02, 1834, Colbert Co.,
Alabama.

The names of James Logan Colbert's three Chickasaw wives are not given in many
sources. I am reproducing here a very good life summary of James Logan
Colbert, Sr, from the Chickasaw History online.

In the Civil War, the Chickasaw Nation was an ally of the Confederate States
of America. James Colbert served as a Private.

======================================
James Logan Colbert (#1014) was born in Carolinas circa 1721. In a
declaration made by Silbestre Labadie, 5 JUL 1782, (Labadie had been a captive
of Colbert in the spring of 1782), he stated that Colbert, "was about 60 years
old, possessed of good health, and a strong constitution. An active man,
despite his years, he had a 'violent temper', and was capable of 'enduring the
greatest hardship.' He had lived among the Chickasaws for 40 years and boasted
that he was owner of a 'fine house' and 'some hundred and fifty' blacks. He
said he had several sons by Chickasaw women, who were 'very important chiefs
in that nation."

Based on this declaration, Colbert would have been born about 1722, and would
have started living among the Chickasaw in about 1742.

Malcom McGee, in an interview in 1841, stated that Colbert was, "a native of
the Carolinas, probably S. C. & came to the Chickasaw Nation prior to 1850."
[Dates conflict here, since the interview was given before the time reported.]

Apparently, in a letter dictated to Gov. Harrison of VA, by Colbert on 25 JUL
1783, Colbert stated he wished to, "serve the Country in which he lives and
was born." James died 7 JAN 1784 in AL, at 62 years of age. After conducting
some business in St. Augustine in 1873, he began his journey home. He stopped
by Creek leader Alexander McGillivray's house for a short stay. He the left
there on about 4 JAN 1874. Three days later his horse threw and killed him on
7 JAN 1784.

He married three times. He married First Fullblood Chickasaw in Chickasaw
Nation, circa 1740. (First Fullblood Chickasaw is #1706.) He married Second
Fullblood Chickasaw before 1742 . (Second Fullblood Chickasaw is #1707. He
married Halfblood Chickasaw before 1768. Halfblood Chickasaw is #1708.)
Halfblood died 1822 in Tockshish, Chickasaw Nation, MS TER.

Conflicting evidence states that James was born in SCOTLAND, circa 1721.
James immigrated, 10 JAN 1735/6. Destination: Darien, GA. Early family
stories have him comming to America as a stow away. These stories have never
been proven and are rather doubtful. James's occupation: Trader in Chickasaw
Nation, 22 JAN 1766. On list of Traders & Packhorsemen, found in the records
of England, "James Calbert" is listed as a trader in the Chickasaw Nation as
of 22 JAN 1766.

James's occupation: Trader in Chickasaw Nation, before 1784. One source
states that, "Among the most influential mixed-bloods of the Chickasaws, were
the five sons of James Logan Colbert, a Scotsman who came to live among the
tribe in 1729 and married three Chickasaw women.

Four of his sons became chiefs of the tribe. One Colbert had three wives, one
Indian and the other two were white women. Both were sisters with the last
name Allen" ("Chickasaw Chiefs and Prominent Men"). Another source states
that James Logan Colbert came to America aboard the PRINCE OF WALES, which
landed at Darien, Georgia on January 10, 1736. Also on board were John
McIntosh, Lachlan McGillivray, and John's older brother, Lachlan McIntosh. All
these men played significant roles in the history of the "Five Civilized
Tribes." -- (Martini).

Chickasaw interpreter, Malcom McGee, in an circa 1841 interview with historian
Lyman Draper, stated that James Logan Colbert was from the Carolinas. Colbert
himself stated at one time he was born in the Carolinas.

About 1740, he moved to the Chickasaw Nation and married into the tribe.

One of the earliest reports of James Colbert and the Chickasaws may be found
in The South Carolina Gazette, No 1368, OCT 11 to 18, 1760. Therein was
published a journal by one Langley. His SEP 26 entry, (made at Fort Prince
George), stated, "Soon three or four other fellows (Indians) came, and were at
our bake house when to our surprize, JAMES COLBERT appeared coming up, with
signal and two letters upon a stick.

As soon as he spoke to us, the Indians went off. He then returned to the
mouth of Crow Creek, about 400 yards off, and brought in 4 Chicasahs that were
concealed there. The poor fellows were extremely fatigued and their leader
Jockey's Son was sick, having a fever every other day. They left Augusta
about the 18th of August, and on their way staid some time at a fort the
inhabitants were building twixt this and Savannah river, and were obligrd to
leave others of their party sick, in the woods a days journey from the said
fort."

===========================================

This account notes that he died three days ride away from the home of a friend
in Creek Nation, and that his death occurred in Alabama. A genealogy
reporting James concurs with this and provides further detail, giving the
actual location. However, this sources does not provide a source or any
explanation of this information. This source also reports his birth was in
North, rather than South Carolina, and even gives a specific location, Plum
Island, but unfortunately, again there is no documentation.

While this is more specific information, and the more detailed death
information concurs with the Chickasaw History report, I am hesitant to give
this undocumented source priority over an eye-witness report from Malcom
McGee, who reported that James' birth was probably in South Carolina. A
couple of other similar genealogies also report Plum Island NC as the birth
place, but again give no documentation or explanation.

James Logan Colbert

-- Sierra Brown,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/160066/person/-2117201191?ftm=1

Sierra seems to be wrong about Levi's mother being the First Fullblood wife.
The Chickasaw History, and several family genealogies report it was the second
wife. Several also report her name as Sopha, although the Chickasaw History
reports no name for any of the three wives of James Logan Colbert.

Some sources refer to James as
Captain.
