Athens News Courier Personality Spotlight, By United Press Internatioial

John Bowden Connally was one of the nation’s kingpin Democrats until he
bolted his party in 1972 to take part in the re-election campaign of President
Richard Nixon. A protege of Lyndon Johnson, his career and Johnson's ran
parallel courses for some 30 years. The coalition between the two men
powerfully affected Texas Politics for two decades, and dominated the natinoal
scene while Johnson served inthe White House.

Connally was born Feb 27, 1917, on a small farm near Floresville, Tex. He
worked plowing peanuts and hoeing cotton. He attended the University of
Texas, where he met his future wife -- Ida Nell Brill.

The son listed as A Connally would be Andrew and J is James. These are the
two sons of Ann Hunter, Jones' first wife. Daughter E Connally would be Eddy,
born after her father died, Mary Ellen and Nat's daughter. The last child,
1-year-old A Connally, would be Arizona, the first child Mary Ellen had with
Jones.

Mary Ellen was the second wife of Jones Connally, after his wife Ann C Hunter
died. Her first husband was his younger brother Nathaniel Edwin Connally.

In his genealogy posted on Ancestry World Tree
(http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bigwills&id=I43141, no
longer online), Johnny L Williams reports that Mary Ellen died at Eddy,
McLennan, County, Texas. Eddy is about 10 miles south of Waco, and is now
called Bruceville-Eddy. This is close to Lorena, which is about 5 miles from
Waco on I-35. Lorena is the town nearest to the place where my grandmother
Julia Virginia Terry was born in 1880. Julia Virginia's father Thomas Duncan
was a 1st cousin to Mary Ellen.

============================================

"Jones and Ann were married 18 Nov 1852 in Murray County, Georgia. Ann died in
1863, presumably while Jones was off to war in the 1st Texas Lancers. His
younger brother Ned Connally died 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville (while Mary
Ellen Terry Connally was carrying their daughter, Eddie, born the following
September). Then the widower and widow got married in 1867, producing five
daughters and a United States senator."
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 13 August 2017

--------------------------
Arizona is the really interesting one of all the senator's siblings. Seems to
have married a vaquero, with whom she went into the boarding business.

There is a "rest of the story" sticking in my mind from somewhere, which is
that when Ann died, her distraught parents painted "GTT" [Gone to Texas] on
their wagon and invited Jones to come along with them to Brazoria. Or was it
the other way around?

Had it not been for the Comanches, Kiowas, and Cheyenne, and the fact that
dry-land farming was no good west of the 100th parallel, emigration to Texas
might have depopulated the older, cottoned-out parts of Dixie worse than it
did.

"I have documentation for my third great grandfather, Russell T. Jones Sr.,
who was in the Continental North Carolina Light Dragoons. His daughter-in-law,
my second great grandmother, was Margaret Connally, wife of Col Thomas Jones,
War of 1812. Margaret is actually my Rev. War tie-in to the Connally's. One of
Russell Sr.'s daughters married General Daniel. Did Price Daniel descend from
him, I wonder?"
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 28 August 2017

"Another name in the will [of Drury Christian] jumped out at me: Joel T.
Haley, related somehow to Margaret Connally Jones, married Thomas Jones's
daughter Frances. Their great niece Lucy Cline wrote a stunning description
(in RootsWeb entry for Russell T. Jones Sr.) of the glory that once was the
Thomas Jones home, with seven large fireplaces and chimneys, by Fort Lamar on
Athens Road, Georgia Hwy 106, outside Danielsville, Madison County, Georgia.
Joel carved his 1802 birth date on top of the mantel in the front parlor.
There was a Joel T. Haley Jr., then the Third. The family made it big in the
grocery business in Chattanooga."
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 January 2018

"Mary Polly, one of Thomas's sisters, married Gen. Allen Daniel. This
northern portion of Madison was once part of Franklin County, when Thomas's
father, Russell T. Jones Sr., originally settled there. During the
Revolution, when he was in the NC Light Dragoons, the family lived in Wilkes
County, North Carolina, after their original home in Albemarle County,
Virginia, in the vicinity of Monticello and Charlottesville, became overrun
with the British. Russell was a bricklayer and building contractor as well as
farmer. Jefferson biographer Dumas Malone said Jones boys were clients of
young attorney Thomas Jefferson but neglected to say which ones and why they
needed legal representation."

Her [Christian relatives] (2) Cenas married Jones's brother's [son] William L
Connally, and (3) Pyrene married Samuel W Connally."

Notes for Thomas CONNALLY

His memorial on Find a Grave has a dedicatory military fiootstone, but the
photographer who posted it has not given permission to copy and use it here.
The stone notes he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was 82 years old
(presumably meaning at his death). No dates are included on the stone.

A comment is posted on the memorial concerning the cemetery.

Connally Cemetery Gwinnett Co. Ga.: "This cemetery is on private property near
Duluth. It is small and an earlier record exists of the graves. It appears he
was visiting his daughter when he died and that is why this Connally grave is
not in East Point."
