Notes for William Andrew John COOK

-------------------------------
My great, great grandmother, Mary Ann Gray, married William Andrew John Cook
before 1840, and her sister, Nancy, her mother, Nancy, and her brother, Isaac,
are listed in the John Cook 1850 household, Richland Twp, Desha County (the
Emaline listed is my great grandmother). Isaac is listed in Mary Ann’s 1860
household, Jefferson Township, Desha County.

W.A.J. Cook, Mary Ann, and Mary Ann’s brother, Isaac Gray, all acquired
Desha County land patents, involving adjoining acreage, which suggests they
were planning on establishing a plantation (these patents can be observed on
the BLM-GLO site). W.A.J. died about 1856, Mary Ann died 06 Nov 1862, and
Isaac died of disease on 17 Jul 1862 while serving with Company E, 26th
Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA. My great grandmother, Emma, ended up with all
of the land, which totaled around 320 acres. She married my great grandfather,
William Floyd Meeks, on 28 Feb 1867 (he also served with Isaac in Company E,
26th AR INF, CSA), and all of that acreage then became known as the Meeks
place.

Notes for Peter Virgil COOKSEY

Pete's full name was provided by another researcher tryig to find details for a
friend who was Pete's daughter.

"I am doing research on one of my friend's ancestors. Her birth father was
Peter Virgil "Pete" Cooksey. My friend was not raised by her father and she
doesn't remember much about him. ... I think Pete married four times."
-- Donna Hunter, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 20 October 2016

Donna had been in touch with some members of the famliy on both sides.

"Here's what I know about Pete. He married 1st, Josephine (Jocie) Almond on
18 Aug 1927 in Pope Co., AR. Pete and Jocie had a child named Alfred Lee
Cooksey in 1930/1. Jocie was my friend's mother. Jocie died of TB [see report
below from Jocie's granddaughter that she died in childbirth] about 6 months
[years] (1937) after my friend was born. Pete then married Bertha Haralson on
23 Sep 1939. She evidently died in childbirth and the baby also died. Then
came Jewel [Merryman] and finally Pete married Ariva Ritter McCoy King. I
found a picture of Ariva on Ancestry. Pete is evidently buried next to his
mother in Le Flore but I didn't find him on FAG. His mother, Rosie Lee
Shockley Cooksey, is on FAG"

This genealogy has a different date of death than most. While some others
report this date, the most common is 10 March 1963. None of the genealogies I
have found give an objective source for their date, and I have not seen a
grave photo or cemetery report. My step-sister confirmed that the March date
was correct.

"That is my Grandma who lived with us until she died in March. I don't know
where the Oct 3 came from. The first grave stone put up was a homemade one by
my Uncle Earl Harmon. Mom put a new one up a few years back. I haven't seen
it. It marked Grandma's and my Daddy's grave."

Mallissa's birth state was reported as Alabama in 1910, consistently in her
record and the record for the birthplace of all the children. In 1920, this
changed consistently to become Mississippi!

1920 Federal Census, Faulkner County, Arkansas, 9 January, Wilson Township,

In 1930 other changes occur in the report. Her place of birth is back to
Alabama, but her father's place of birth is now Arkansas, instead of
Mississippi.

In the 1930 census, when Malissa (Malissia) is a widow, her grown son Climmie,
age 25, is still with her in the home, and her youngest daughter Eunice, age
17. They live next door to Malissa's son from her first marriage, Alfred
(Roberts), 31, who is listed as Alford McPherson.

Two doors down the other direction is James Harmon and family. A few months
later (28 Jan 1911) Eunice marries one of James' sons Earl.

On the Find aGrave memorial there was originally a discrepancy here on the
year of death. This wa corrected with a suggested edit to the memorial
manaager.
