Notes for Jennett COWAN

"The 1890’s brought more tragedy for the West Family. Lightner’s
grandmother and the family matriarch, Jennet (Cowen) West, died in about 1888
after a long decline that left her able to walk only on crutches. During 1891,
flu or other illness decimated the area and four of George W. West’s
children (Lightner West’s aunts and uncles) passed away within the year. In
1895, George W. West, who had remarried the widow Nancy (Bagwell) Clayton,
also passed away. His farm in the Hightower District of Forsyth County was
sold off. Lightner West’s only three remaining aunts and uncles on his West
side had all immigrated to Arkansas by the mid-1890’s. The West family of
Forsyth County, Georgia had effectively moved on."

that he registered for the draft in Fannin County, Tennessee, and his

Notes for Bonnie Mae COWART

Bonnie's age was first written as 7/12, then corrected to 8/12, which matches
the reported birth month of October 1899. Note that both the daughters are
married but neither husband is in this household. In 1910, the whole family
are together in their own household in the same location.

Notice that in this 1910 report, Bonnie is only 9 years old. But in the 1900
census, she was already 8 months old in June 1900, being born in October 1899.
So in 1910, she is actually almost 11 years old.

Note the ages of the children. The oldest daughter is only a few years
younger than Bonnie. All besides the baby were born before 1910, when Bonnie
herself was only 9 years old. These older children are the children of
Martin's first marriage. The baby Grady Atherton is Bonnie's first child.

In the 1920 census, Bonnie was reported by the census as married to James
Martin, but on her memorial on Find a Grave, her husband's name is James
Martin Lance. Is this a second husband, whose first and second name just
happen to be the same as the 1920 reported husband's first and last names?
But I also note that the date of death on the grave of Bonnie Cowart Lance is
1932. I have not found them in the1930 census to search for further insights.

RobertThompson commented on the family name in the 1920 census, stating that
the original information in the census was incorrect.

"James Martin Lance rather than James Martin. The original data on the record
is incorrect."

Notes for Cynthia A COWART

Cintha may be actually named Cynthia. The form Cyntha is found, however, in
many families in this era, and records for most ofthem vary between the two
forms. The 1870 census has her as Cynthis but in 1880 she was Cintha and
other records have the Cyntha or Cintha form. Her death certificate and grave
have her name as Synthia.

Some genealogies report that her middle name was Lena. A daughter named Lena
is linked to Glenn and Martha Jane on their Find a Grave memorials. But so is
Eleanor. Further, that Lena's birth place is reported as Towns County. There
is no indication that Glenn and Martha lived in Towns County. The birthday of
the Lena in Towns County is reported to be in 1973, while the ages reproted
for Eleanor in the censuses makes her birth about 1869. This matches the
burial memorial for Eleanor L Cowart Taylor.

Notes for Glenn H COWART

Glenn's last name is sometimes spelled Coward. This s true also of his sisters
Winny Coward and Martha Coward. Glenn's name was spelled Coward on his
marriage license. Several trees report him as David Glenn Cowart, and his
memorial on Find a Grave has David "Glenn" Cowart, indicating that Glenn is
only a nickname, but I have been able to find nothing that refers to him by
both these given names. None of the trees I have checked have any
documentation for the double name.

A daughter named Lena is linked to Glenn and Martha Jane on their Find a Grave

and all the other chidlren are accounted for. Further, Lena's birth place is

in Towns County. The birthday of the Lena in Towns County is reported to be

A 1917 WWI draft registration matches Glynn, and is in the same plcce where
his brother Ben Hill Cowart registered. They were both living in Copperhill,
Tennessee, and working for the Tennessee Copper Company. Their mother was
later living here as a widow with their sister Ida in her household in 1930
and 1940. This was also Glynn's mother's residence when she passed away in
1949. In 1917, This registration is in the name of Tatum Cowart.

U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
Tatum Cowart
Copperhill (Polk County), Tennessee
Birth 31 Aug 1888 Bartow County, Georgia
Occupation Switchman, Tennessee Copper Co, Copperhill, Tenn
Married with 3 children
Tall, Blue Eyes, Dark Hair, Broken Left Arm
Registered 5 June 1917 Copperhill, Polk, Tennessee
Signed Tatum Cowart

Tatum reports that he is married with 3 children. This matches the family
configuration in the census of 1920, except for the addition of a fourth child
reported as 1 year and 2 months old. All factors match Tatum C Cowart as
being the same person as Glynn T Cowart. His grandson's name as Glynn Tatum
Cowart III gives us a valid middle name for Glynn. This was his mother's
maiden name. And in the 1920 census he was enumerated under the name Tatum.
Puzzling, however, is the middle initial C. This name appears on his grave
and some records.

His son and grandson''s names are also spelled Glynn, and the name occurs
several tiems in the Cowart lineage. Thus this appears to be the family's
spelling of the name. There was a Glynn Tatum Cowart Jr and Glenn Tatum
Cowart III. The Social Security record of Glynn Tatum Cowart, born in 1914,
reports his father's name was Tatum C Cowart, matching the censuses and WWI
registration mentioned above. Tatum C Cowart is a name on the footstone of a
Cowart burial in Jasper, Georgia, a location that matches with this familly.

The grave birth date in August 1888 is close to the birth date reported for
Glenn T Cowart in the 1900 census, July 1888. In fact, this census birth date
is closer to correct that most 1900 census birth dates, which are usually off
by at least one year and often have the wrong month.

Glynn and other members of his family worked for the Copper Mine in Copperhill
or the Coal Mine in the area. The 1940 census reprots that Glynn (Tatum) nwas
a mechanic for the copper mines.

The 1920 census for Tatum C Cowart matches the individual previously reported
as Glenn T Cowart in 1900 and 1910. He named his first son Jefferson D, after
his father, and his first daughter Mary, after his mother. Glynn's mother is
reported as Myrtle Barnes, who is buried in the same cemetery as Tatum C
Cowart.

Return to Glynn Tatum COWART

Notes for Glynn Tatum COWART

Glynn's Social Security record gives some insight on his father's name. His
father is reported here as Tatum C Cowart. Yet the 1900 and 1910 census
reports his father as Glenn T Cowart. The name is reported in numerous city
directories in later life as Glynn T Cowart. Glynn's wife in city directories
from about 1948 is Helen W Cowart.

Glynn Jr's mother is reported as Myrtie Barnes (or perhaps this is a typo for
Myrtle). In census from 1920 to 1940, Tatum C Cowart's wife is named Myrtle.
A grave is also found in the name of Tatum C Barnes in Jasper, Georgia,
Cemetery, where other members of this family are buried. The enumerations for
1920 and 1930 include a son Glenn age 5 in 1920 and 15 in 1930.

Notes for Jefferson Davis COWART

Cowarts lived in Chickasaw Nation and Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, in the same
proximity as Tatums. The family tradition says that Mary had 4 girls and 1
boy, but names were not known.

The family's enumeration in the 1900 census lists 2 girls and 4 boys at that
point.

Obituary
J H Cowart, Who Died In Plains, Ga, Buried Here Tuesday

The body of Mr J H Cowart, 66 years old, who died in a hospital at Americus
last Sunday morning at an early hour, was brought to Cartersville, reaching
here Monday. It was carried to the home of a daughter, Mrs J J Smith [Olivia
Cowart Smith], and from there carried to the Baptist Tabernacle Tuesday
morning at ten o'clock for the funeral.

Quite a large number of friends gathered for the last sad rites, the services
being conducted in a most impressive manner by Rev George V Crow, pastor of
the Tabernacle. Following these services, the body was borne to Oak Hill
cemetery, and there interred in the family lot. The pallbearers were Messrs T
A Jenkins, Lee Smith, F M Smith, Gus Ingram, H L Spence and John Spence. The
arrangements were in charge of G M Jackson & Sons.

Besides his widow, the deceased is survived by the following sons and
daughters: Mrs J J Smith [dau Olivia], of Cartersville; Mrs R L Ingram (dau
Lillian) of Canton, Ohio; Mr J G Cowart [son James Glenn] of Columbus; Mr O H
Cowart [son Oscar H] of Tampa, Fla; Mrs J W Casey [dau Ophelia] of Dawson, Ga;
Mrs Shep Smith [dau Flonnie] of Americus, Ga.

Before moving to Plains some years ago, where he has since been one of the
leading farmers, Mr Cowart was a citizen of Bartow county. He has scores of
friends throughout this section who will be grieved to learn of his death, and
will extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
