Notes for Emmet Earl COX

One source has his name as Emmet Edward instead of Emmet Earl Cox. In the 1896
census, the first child's name looks like Nethi, but other records indicate
her name was Nellie. The third child, 2 years old in the 1896 census, had not
yet been named, or the enumerator failed to get the name.

Note that the census reports that Emmet has been married 17 years (first
marriage) and Nah mack ir only 8 (second marriage). The age of the first
children reported in 1900 indicates that they are children of the first wife.
Naunocca married Emmet Cox in January 1893. I later found one website
genealogy that had the name of the first wife but few other details, though
they did report her father. This genealogy even had a photo of Nahkiape's
father. They also provided details on Nell, who is the only child reproted
there for themarriage fo Emmet and Nahkiape.

Note also that this genealogy had Emmet's name as Ememt Edward, rather than
Emmet Earl.

Both Emmet and Nau-noc-ca are reported to have been married twice. This may
be an error on the record for Nau-noc-ca. On the second section of the
record, reporting tribe and percentage of blood, no second marriage is
reported for her, but it is for Emmet. Since Emmet is so much older than her,
it seems likely for him, but I have not found a record of his first marriage
or any first marriage for her. A few genealogies report a previous husband
for Cynthia Ann Naunocca, but with no details and no documentation.

In the 1920 census, Cynthia Ann is reported as Mary N. The middle initial
would match her Comanche name, in common form usually found as Naunocca, or
int eh earlier censuses, as Nah-mack-ir or Nam-ma-kah.

In 1926, the Comanche census reports Emmet and Nau noc ca with two of their
children still in the home. In the next several entries are other children,
some alone with their own household number. Each of the children's household
in this family group are given a designation of a fraction of the parents'
household number. It seems whimsical, since they don't follow any definite
order. The husbands of daughters Nora and Nellie (Naunocca's stepdaughter)
are not listed, which would indicate they are white.

Notes for Mary COX

"Gentry West tells me John A, son of R A West and Mary Cox, died a young boy
and is buried in Lone Tree Cemetery near Stuttgartt, AR. We have no
information on H, the 4 year old son."
-- Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin, April 1991, pp 45

According to the 1910 census, Asberry and his second wife Susan Burke had been
married 32 years, meaning marriage about 1778. Thus H West, reported in 1880
as 4 years old, was the son of Mary Cox.

war. He later married Mary Ann Cox. They both are buried in the Orr Cemetery
in Orr, Oklahoma, a small town by Healdton, Oklahoma. I have pictures of
their grave site. I'm surprises that you found Isaac Briscoe's dad's name.
Me and others have searched and searched for it."

Notes for Mary Bell Nan-nio-nina COX

Some genealogies list Mary's Indian name as Nannie Nina, following the
transcription of Ancestry.com on the 1900 census. It appears to me to read
Nan nio nina. Most genealogies report Mary and her older sister Nellie as the
daughters of Naunocco (Cynthia Ann) Parker, but Naunocco did not marry their
father Emmet Cox until January 1883. Cynthia Ann Naunocca is reported to have
married Emmet Cox in 1893, which would mean that Norah was her first child,
and Nellie and Mary (Nan nio nina) would be daughters of the first wife.

One genealogy identifies Nellie's mother as Nahkiape. Mary is not reported as
a child of Nahkiape on that genealogy. I found one genealogy that reports
Mary as the daughter of Naunocco with a prior husband named Quohaddy. There
was no documentation or detail. I have not been able to find any other
references to this.

In the 1900 census, all the children are reported as 5/8 white except Nellie,
who is only 1/2 white, since her father Emmet Cox is White and her mother
Nahkiape was full-blood Comanche. But Mary is reported as 5/8 like the
younger children of Emmet with Naunocco. So this would seem to indicate some
difference in her parentage. But the percentage still would not match, if
Quahaddy was full-blood Comanche. So it is still uncertain. This kind of
detail is often reported incorrectly in the censuses. The math involved is
often way off.

In 1900 the child matching Mary is reported under the name of Nan nio nina.

considered to be correct although there is doubt that Mary was a daughter of
Emmet Cox (some believe that Mary was Nau-no-ca's daughter prior to her

thought to be Napiape. Also there is uncertainty as to Nellie's birth date.
Her tombstone indicates 13 Dec 1882, was created during her fathers lifetime
and is confirmed by her daughters while the annual Comanche census indicates
her birth year as1886 or 1887. Of course her birth year would have likely been

tend to copy earlier information forward)."

Since Nellie is reported as only half white and the other children are
reported as 5/8, this may be an indication that Nellie is the daughter of
Emmet's first wife. However, Mary, the second daughter in 1896, was reproted
born in 1890, which was before Emmet married Nau-noc-co (Jan 1893). The child
matching Mary is named Nan nio nina in 1900, and is reported as age 10, with a
birthday in June 1890. And Nan-nio-nina is reported as 5/8 white like hte
younger chidlren. This is not very definitive.

Nellie's age and birth date do not match either. Note that she was 7 in 1896
but four years later in 1900 she is reported as 14. If she was 14, she would
have been born before June 1886, yet her birth year is reported sa 1883. In
1896 she was reported as 7 years old, or born in about 1889, or 1888. If she
was born in 1883, Cynthia Ann, who is reported as her mother, would have been
only 10 years old.

From their ages in the censuses, we can tell that Nellie and her sister Mary
(Nam-mah-ka) are children of the first wife Nahkiape. They were both born
before 1893 when their father married Cynthia Ann Parker.

Nell is the daughter of the first wife, but 1883 is still too early to match
the other information. Her age of 14 matches reported ages in other years.
Her 1910 reported age was 24, which would make birth in 1885 or 1886. 1886 is
a reasonable year to account for the facts we have. In the 1914 Comanche
census her birth year was reprotee as 1897 (age was not reported).

The Earl Family genealogy had some helpful details on Nell and her mother
Nahkiape, who is not reported by most sources. This source does confirm that
her year of birth was 1886, as I reckoned in my analysis.

Bill Cook had additional comments that help us uinderstnad Nellie's situation
and accomplishments. He made the following comments on another Ancestry
genealogy. He indicates she was a highly edicated language teacher, teaching
both Spanish and English.

---------------------------
Here are comments to the claim that Mildred Nell "Nellie" Cox was white.
1. The annual Comanche census indicates her as a part of the Emmet Cox family
but, although individuals who had no Comanche blood were generally not
included in the census there are other cases where they were, so it isn't a
determinant factor in establishing Comanche blood.

2. In 1985 Nellie's daughters went to Lawton to research their mother's
mother. At the time of Nellie's birth in 1882 there was no civil system for
marriage records so they engaged the assistance of Arthur Lawrence who many
believed was the foremost Comanche historian of the time period. Arthur and
his father had operated the Red Store at the Fort Sill Sub-Agency and Arthur
had made it his life's work to keep records of the individuals and events of
the Comanche tribe. His card file and clipping collection form a significant
part of the Comanche documentation at the Museum of the Great Plains. Arthur
made contacts at the Anadarko Agency and replied that the their records
indicated Emmet's first wife was Nap(h)iape the daughter of band chief
Quirtsquip (Chewing Elk). It is unknown when Napiape left the union with
Emmet.

3. The awarding of allotments involved a determination of Comanche blood much
more robust than claims on the annual census. Nellie received an allotment of
160 acres.

4. Perhaps Nellie was perceived as "white" due to her speech. By adulthood she
had been very well educated both at Carlisle Indian Industrial School followed
by Bloomsburg State Normal School (both in PA) and graduate work at OU (where
she knew and visited with Arthur Lawrence). She also had taught language in
both English and Spanish."

I found the dates on her gravestone very interesting. There her birth date is
reproted as 13 Dec 1882, a date even earlier than the earliest suggested by
any census. In the 1900 census her birth date was reported as Dec 1883, but
conflicted with her reported age of 14, being 3 years or so earlier than that
age woudl allow.

It seems odd that all the other ages are consistent with birth in about 1886,
as reported by the Earl Family Tree. However the day of the month is
different, since the Earl genealogy reports the date as 13 Dec 1886. The
genealogy also reports a different day of death, but the same year, 20 April
1926, while the gravestone says 25 April 1926. could the date on the
gravestone be the date of burial?

The child born in 1894 matches the 1900 child named Nora (Noera) and Norah in
1910. The 10-year old child reported in 1900 matches Mary of the 1896 report.
Mary's name in 1900 is Nan nio Nina (transcribed by Ancestry as Nannie Nina).
Ages varying a year or two is very close for the census reports. After
getting the 1900 census, I could tell this Unknown 2-year-old child of 1896 is
Norah. The actual year of birth for Norah looks like it should be 1894 at the
latest, not 1895, as reported here.

Norah's age is reported as 5 in 1900, but 13 in 1910, making it appear she was
born in about 1896 or 1897. In the 1900 census she was reported as 5 years
old, yet with a birthday in December 1895. In June 1900 she would be only 4.5
years old, and should be reported as 4 years old. If really 5 years old, then
she was born in 1894.

Note that in the 1896 census Norah was reported as already 2 years old. If
born in December 1895, she would have still been an infant about 6 months old.
This is a common problem in the 1900 census, often reporting the birth a year
later than actual. it appears that poor math was involved, probably largely
because very few people were edicted. It appears the procedure was for the
enumerator to ask for the age, then the birth day or birth month, then infer
the year, often in error. Many people would not know or focus on dates, which
we now take as so utterly necessary.

If she was born in December 1894, she would have been 1.5 years old in June
1896. so technically, to be really 2 years old in June 1896, she would have
had to be born in December 1893. But in practical terms, it was probably
1894. Her gravestones has 1895 as the birth year, which does not match the
ages reported in censuses, but does match the 1900 report.
