Notes for Manuel Harvey CRISWELL

In 1880 Harvey is recorded as a 5-year child in the home of his parents in
Attala County, Mississippi.

In 1900, we find Manuel Harvey Criswell living in the household of Phillip K
McSwain. He goes by Harvey. About 3-4 years later, Harvey will marry a niece
of Phillip, Callie McSwain, sister of Wiley Carew McSwain. In 1900 Wiley is a
single head of household, taking care of younger siblings, including Carrie,
after their parents George and Harriet have passed away.

1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 19 June, Prairie Township,

Criswell, Harvey Boarder W M Jan 1876 24 Single MS VA AL Farm Laborer

The birth date in this census is January 1876, but his gravestone, which has
only the year of birth, says 1875. This is consistent with the age reported
in the 1880 census, when in the June census he was 5 years old. It appears
that he was born in 1875 instead of 1876. This type of error is common in the
1900 census.

By 1910, Harvey and Callie are married and have three children.

Manuel Harvey's first name in this census is terribly scrawled and actually
would be indecipherable by anyone who did not know what to expect. Knowing
his two names, it is discernible that the enumerator meant to write Emanuel H.

In this census, the birth state of Harvey's father has changed from North
Carolina in 1900 to South Carolina. In 1920, the birth state of his father
was also reported as South Carolina. Also in 1930, there was no state of
birth given for his mother, whereas Alabama had been previously reported.

Gladys Dempsey shown here as Harvey's niece, is Gladys Lucille McSwain,
daughter of Wiley Carew McSwain, Callie D Criswell's brother. Linnie (spelled
Leenie here), Gladys' husband, is thus shown as the nephew-in-law. They been
married just about one year.

Notes for Margaret E CRISWELL

It seems there were two children in this family named Margaret. Here Maggie E
is reported at age 12, and with a birthday of April 1888. I assume that
Maggie here is, as usual, the nickname for Margaret. But there is a child
reported as Margaret who is age 3 in 1880. That would make her age 23 in
1900. But how could a 23 year old be mistaken for a 12-year-old, as Maggie is
reported here.

Thus I conclude that there wa an earlier child named Margaret, then a second
child also named Margaret (called Maggie here). Or maybe it is possible they
named here Maggie, the nickname, as a primary name. Was this because the
earlier Margaret had died young? This was sometiems the case with familes in
the1800s.

These two censuses show Maggie born in Arkansas, whereas a Simons family
genealogy reports her born in Attala, Mississippi. We know that the family
lived in Attala before they moved to Ethel, Arkansas, so perhaps the genealogy
generalized that as the birthplace of all the children as well. John, the
oldest son, is the only child reported by the genealogy as born in Alabama.
Attala is also reported as the birthplace of father William H. I have
confirmed that this is an error.

William was born in South Carolina. The 1900 census erroneously reports him
born in Alabama. But all other sources indicate he was born in South
Carolina, and some genealogies specifically give his birthplace as Abbeville
District. William's father James Henry was born in South Carolina. It is
possible that the family resided in Alabama for some time before moving on to
Mississippi. Perhaps further information will clarify if this accurate.
Maggie is still single and living in her father's household at age 30, at the
time of the 1920 census.

Margaret married John Bell Holden. John is reported byt he following
genealogy to have died in 1882. But he disappears form records before the
1880 census.

John Bell Holden
Birth 1844 in Rutherford Co., TN
Death 23 Dec 1882 in Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas

Though John is reported in the genealogy to have died in 1882, in the 1880
census, Margaret is found in her father's home, with the surname Wigley, and
reported as a widow. Note also that the above genealogy reports that
Margaret's husband John Bell died in Ft Worth, Texas. Two of her
granddaughters moved to Dallas later, so there must be some family connection
in the Dallas-Ft Worth area. But if John died in Ft Worth in 1882, why was
Margaret in her father's home in 1880, with her stepchildren from her first
marriage?

Some dates or places are wrong somewhere. Or she was either divorced or her
first husband died, and she remarried and that second husband also died before
the 1880 census, not in 1882. The Wigley children would appear to be her
stepchildren, since her first child was William Holden, born about 1859, the
same year of birth as Amanda Wigley here.

In 1900, Margaret is living with her son William Holden. Margaret is still
going by the last name Wigley, as in the 1880 census record. John neer eshows
up again, so he must have died in Tennessee or Mississippi, despite the report
by the Tangled Roots genealogy.

In this census, Margaret is reported as born in North Carolina, but William's
record reports his mother as born in Mississippi. In the 1910 census,
Margaret's birth state is South Carolina. In 1910, Margaret is living with
her granddaughter Ethel Holden McSwain's family.

Note that Margaret is reported as Russel's grandmother. Perhaps the
enumerator misunderstood when told she was Ethel's grandmother. The
relationship of John Holden to Russel is also incorrect, from what we know.
John Holden is Ethel's brother, and thus Russel's brother-in-law.

So it is unclear why he is reported as Russel's nephew. Maybe John's mother
Jane was a sister of Russel. Jane's maiden name was McSwain, but I have not
identified her parents.

I don't have many details on Mary Frances. Her last child, Wince Jones, was
born in 1903, and she died in 1904.

Descendant Jimmy Jones reports to me in email correspondence the names of
three children: Bill (William H), Jim (James) and Helen. Helen seems to
match the child found in some family lists as Mattie. I have no additional
information on a child named Helen. Wince was also her son, since she died in
1904.

Mary Frances Criswell died 25 October 1904. William Thomas Jones married
Cornie Cochran in 1906.

Mary Frances Criswell was the wife of William Thomas "Willie" Jones. They were
married in Arkansas County, Arkansas, on 12 December 1894. they lived out
their lives in Ethel, a small farming and fishing community on the White
River.

Mary Frances and Willie had four children:

Mattie Helen Jones, b abt 1902, d unknown
Wince Jones, b 1 Sept 1903, d 9 Mar 1918

Mary Frances died about 13 months after the birth of Wince. A little over a
year later Willie married Cornie Cochran, who also widowed Willie in 1919
after bearing 5 children. Willie married a third time, this time to Ida Myrtle
Criswell, who bore four children, and survived Willie, who died in 1948.

Son Wince Jones 1903-1918

The Jones Family Cemetery is a private cemetery located on the Jones Farm on
Belleview Road in Ethel, now owned by a McSwain descendant. It is not
regularly tended and it is uncertain if any stones are still standing.

In the 1958 St Louis County Directory, Nora was reported as the widow of Elvis
(spelled Alvis), but his grave says he did not die until 2012. They
apparetnly, then, were divorced, but she must have reported herself widowed or
the directory personnel misunderstood her. Perhaps also, the Missouri record
is a conincidentally similar record for a different couple.

Notice that the order of names here would be Bryan Robert. In February 2010,
I found Robert's WWI Draft Registration, which records his name as Robert
Bryan. I will follow this name order over the census. See the following
notes on his signing the registration with this name.

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
Robert Bryan Crisswell
Residence St Charles, Arkansas County, Arkansas
Birth 11 Mar 1900 (place of birth not reported)
Farmer, employed by J B Crisswell, also nearest relative, address St Charles
Medium height, Slender build, Blue Eyes, Light Brown Hair
Registration 19 July 1918 Stuttgart, Arkansas, Arkansas
Signed Robert Brind Criswell

This record helps us with the order of Robert's names. I had surmised from
the census records that the name order was Bryan Robert, but have adjusted to
follow this record, which I will assume to be more first-hand information. He
signs the name in this order, though with this spelling: ROBERT BRIND
CRISWELL. This birth date helps with the exact date of birth.

Note the spelling of his last name, which as far as I can tell, was never used
by this Criswell family. I did, however, find one early listing with this
spellling in the funeral home records for one early Criswell.

record, his name is written (or transcribed by Ancestry) as Creswell.
