Notes for Thomas Jefferson CRISWELL

1880 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 24 June, Beat 4, District 17,
p 51, #461, Fam #465
Criswell, William 40 Farmer MS MS MS (b abt 1840)
Criswell, Martha W F 38 Wife Keeping House b MS MS MS (b abt 1842)
Criswell, Thomas W M 10mos Son MS MS MS (b abt 1879)

The 1900 census reports that Thomas was born in March 1881. Yet Thomas is
reported in the 1880 census! He is already 10 months old at that time, and
thus born in about July 1879. Thus in 1900 he should have been 20 (1 month
short of 21), not 19. The age of 30 in 1910 supports this.

1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 16 June 1900, Prairie
Township, District 7, Page 11B, Hse #192, Family #195:

Martha A Criswell Wife W F Apr 1840 60 Alabama Georgia Georgia
Thomas Criswell Son W M Mar 1881 19 Miss Alabama Alabama

Thomas' birth date here can't be right, since he was recorded in the 1880
census. His WWI registration reports his birth date as 28 August 1878, even
though the 1880 census said he was only 10 months old in June 1880. So it
seems more likely that the year of birth was 1879.

I find it interesting that in the censuses from 1900 to 1930, the birthplace
of Thomas and his parents keeps changing:
1900 Mississippi Alabama Alabama
1910 Arkansas Mississippi Mississippi
1920 Mississippi Georgia Mississippi
1930 Arkansas Mississippi United States

Since the 1880 census reports that TJ was only 10 months old at June 1880
census time, the year here is probably early, and the correct birth date is
probably 28 August 1879. It is not likely his parents in 1880 would have
confused a 10 month old with a 22 month old.

Lee. In this 1920 census TJ and Lyda are living next door to TJ's brother Lee
and his family.

I found this 1870 census record after all the others below. I see that here
William's wife's name here is Mary E, while in the 1880 and later censuses the
wife is Martha A, whom we know to be Martha a Jackson. Mary E is reported
born in Mississippi. Martha A is reported born in Mississippi in 1880, but in
Alabama in 1900 and 1910.

I have found no definitive information about a wife named Mary. And the 1900
census says that William and Martha have been married 40 years, which would
mean they married about 1860. The enumerator in 1870 must have written down
Martha's name and her middle initial incorrectly.

A daughter named Caledonia (Callie) is reported by genealogies as born in
March 1871. But she does not appear in the 1880 census, when she should have
been about 9 years old.

The 1900 census gives birth month and year of birth:

This census reports both William and Martha born in Alabama. Note that the
1880 census reported both born in Mississippi. Most sources report William's
birth place as South Carolina. The latter seems to be correct. I find that
family genealogies usually report William was born in South Carolina,
Abbeville District, specifically.

The Simon Family genealogy reporting on the Criswells gives his and his wife's
birth as Attala, Mississippi, where many of their children were born. This
genealogy was apparently following the 1880 census report. In several of the
children's census reports, their father's birthplace is reported as South
Carolina, and once in Harvey's record, it is North Carolina. Martha's birth
state is usually reported as Alabama.

Note that in the following census, 1910, as well as 1920, William is reported
as born in South Carolina.

In the 1920 census, William is a widower. More notable, he has gained only 6
years in age. He is reported as 74, when he was 69 in 1910. The 1910 age
matches his specific birth date given in the 1900 census, March 1940. His age
should have been reported as 79 in the January 1920 census.

Even though just a few weeks away from his 80th birthday, he is still the head
of the household, and still farming, though renting the farm. He has two
children, 24-year-old son Jesse (spelled Jessie here) and 30-year-old daughter
Maggie, who are both single. There is also a 4-year-old grandson Woodrow
Criswell. Woodrow must be the son of one of William's older sons. I do not
have all the details on them. It would be expected that both Woodrow's
parents had died, if he is in his grandfather's home and cared for by an
unmarried aunt and uncle.

Susan Criswell Ecker has provided an excellent biographical summary for
William's memorial on Find a Grave.

-------------------
William Henry Criswell
Birth Mar 3, 1841 Abbeville County, South Carolina
Death Jan 10, 1924 Arkansas County, Arkansas

William Henry Criswell joined the Confederate States Army as a private in Co.
E, 24th MS regt. which mustered into service in mid 1861. He fought bravely on
Sept. 18, 1863 under Brig. Gen. Edward C. Wathall, CSA commander at the battle
of Chickamauga, and Captain J.D. Smith, who was commanding the 24th.

According to Captain Smith's report they were exposed to extremely heavy fire
not only from enemies' infantry and artillery but was mistaken for Yankees
from Forrest's artillery and suffered severely, having both field officers and
seven company officers wounded; 10 were killed, 103 wounded, 19 missing-12 of
whom were captured and seven unaccounted for.

He was at the battle of Chattanooga, Oct. 6, 1863. He was captured Nov. 24,
1863, taken prisoner and transported to the prison in Louisville, KY. William
Henry Criswell survived the war and prison and returned to his home in Attala
County, MS.
