Notes for Alexander DAVIDSON

Sources report on Alexander Davidson, father of Thomas Davidson and grandfather
of Thomas Jefferson Davidson. A Culpepper Genealogy reports the following
information about Alexander.

Alexander DAVIDSON
ABT 1745 - 1818
· BIRTH: ABT 1745, Statesville, Iredell, NC
· DEATH: 1818, unknown, Bedford, TN
· BURIAL: Round Hill Cem, Belfast, Marshall, TN

5. Thomas DAVIDSON
6. Henrietta Elizabeth DAVIDSON
7. Obediah S DAVIDSON
-- http://www.culpepper.net/chickasaw/d0028/g0000032.html

Another source on the Carpenter family reports the name of Alexander's wife as
Henrietta Jane Clayton. Henrietta was a cousin to Ann Sophronia Carpenter,
who married Milus Davidson, whose mother was Margaret Clayton. But the name
of his Davidson father is not known in the sources reported on Margaret and
her children. Margaret is a widow in the census of 1850 in Lawrence County,
Alabama. This Carpenter Connection, and the Clayton connection are
indications that these Davidsons are part of the same family. Margaret and
most of her children later move to Arkansas County, Arkansas, where we also
find Thomas Jefferson Davis, grandson of Alexander (son of Thomas).

Notes for Clayton DAVIDSON

The Davidson Family Genealogy reports information about Clayton and his family.

"Clayton DAVIDSON (Mr.) was born 1827 in Tennessee. He died 10 Aug 1862 in
McNairy County, Tennessee and was buried in Sanders Cemetery, McNairy County,
Tennessee. Clayton married Elmira (Lucretia Elmira) SHEFFIELD, daughter of
Ephraim Hogan SHEFFIELD and Sarah E. DAVENPORT, on 20 Dec 1849 in Lauderdale
County, Alabama. Elmira was born 5 Feb 1830 in Lauderdale County, Alabama. She
died 5 Feb 1915 in McNairy County, Tennessee and was buried in Sanders
Cemetery, McNairy County, Tennessee."
-- Davidson of Tennessee Genealogy,
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genea/Dzmrtenn.html

In 1850, we find Clayton as head of the household including his widowed mother
and most of his siblings. He has been married for about a year and he and
Elmira (Almira) have a three-year old son Ephraim who was born in Alabama.
They are living in Franklin County, Alabama, thought all except Ephraim were
born in Tennessee. Note that, in contrast, the Davidson family information
rpeorts that Elmira was borni n Lauderdale County, Alabama.

The printed year date of the census 1850 has been overwritten with a 1, which
seems to indicate that the census in this county was not taken until August
1851. I have found one other case of such a date change. This mark may, on
the other hand, have been because of some other unexplained factor.

The Davidsons moved to Arkansas in 1851, after Clayton bought land from a
neighbor Benjamin Pearsall in January of that year.

"Benjamin Pearsall applied for bounty land on 9 Jan 1851 in Franklin Co. AL,
and received 160 acres in the Military District of Arkansas under BL Wt.
10089-160-50. He sold his warrant to his neighbor, Clayton Davidson, who moved
to Arkansas and occupied the land. Neither Benjamin nor his widow received a
pension. Information from descendant Mary Tratumann, 2080 Cornell Road,

information about his father and other famliy members.

----------------------
"G. W. Davidson is a native of Alabama, and is a son of Milus and Sophrina
(Carpenter) Davidson, who were of Tennessee and Mississippi birth,
respectively. Milus Davidson went to Alabama when a boy, and remained there
until 1851-52, when he came to this county, here remaining until his death in
1872, at the age of fifty-two years. When the war broke out he joined the
Confederate army, and served in Price's raid through Missouri, being captured
by the Federals, though soon after he made his escape.

Mrs. Davidson died in 1885 at the age of fifty years. Of their family of
children two are still living: Melissa (now the widow of J. B. Butler,
deceased), and G. W. The latter, the eldest child, was born in Lawrence
County, Ala., in 1845, and was reared in this county, having come here with
his parents when about six or seven years old. He commenced farming for
himself at the age of twenty-one, and in 1871 bought his present farm,
erecting in 1886 the mill and gin which he still owns and operates.

Mr. Davidson is a Republican in politics, and a member of the County Wheel,
and was nominated by the Republicans and Wheelers as sheriff of the county.
[p.654] His wife was formerly Sallie E. Butler, a native of Mississippi. They
are the parents of four children: William M., Anna C., George W. and Guy. Mr.
and Mrs. Davidson are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mr.
Davidson was postmaster of St. Charles from 1872 to 1875. He is one of the
leading farmers and millers in the community, and a highly respected citizen."

Notes for Janetta DAVIDSON

Ephraim Davidson 3 months M born Alabama [b abt April 1850]
Janetta Davidson 24 F b Tennessee [b abt 1826]

In the 1850 census, Janetta (Jennetta or Jannette) is enumerated in Franklin
County, Alabama, in the household of her older brother Clayton Davidson, age
23. Their widowed mother Margaret Davidson age 50 is in the household, as
well as most of their siblings. Milus was already married (1844) also living
in Franklin County in 1850. The Davidson Family Genealogy reports on
Janetta's marriage: "Jenetta married John R. WALTON on 1 Dec 1860 in Arkansas
County, Arkansas. John was born 1815 in Tennessee."
-- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genea/Dzmrtenn.html

They moved to Arkansas before the 1860 census. David Lee had discovered most
of the census records related to this family, which are also reported in the
Davidsons of Tennessee information. In 1860 Janetta (Jenetta) is in the
household of her brother Alexander in St Charles, Arkansas. St Charles was a
ferry station across the White River until a few years ago.
