Mathew is reported by the Davidson Family Genealogy as a child of Thomas B Davidson and Sarah Leeper Miller. He does not appear in the 1850 report of that family, when he would have been about 15-16 years old. And in some other genealogies reporting on this Davidson lineage, he is not listed. But in 1870 Matthew is in St Charles, Arkansas, near other members of this family. In 1870, Matthew, still single, is a Physician living with his sister Janetta (Janette) Walton. They have moved to St Charles, Arkansas County, Arkansas, where other Davidsons also moved. 1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 1 July, Prairie Township, PO St Charles, page 8, Hse/Fam #63 Walton, John R 55 M W Keeping House (sic) b Tennessee [b abt 1815] Walton, Jennette 46 F W [No Occupation] b Arkansas [should be Tennessee] [b abt 1824] Davidson, Matthew O 35 M W Physician $100 Personal Estate b Tennessee; boarding with Walton Family [b abt 1835] In the 1850 census, 15-year-old Mathew is in Franklin County, Alabama, in the household of a Clayton Davidson, age 23, who is married to Almira, and they have a son Ephraim 3 months old. There are several other Davidsons in their 20s or teens, and one Margaret Davidson age 50, who would fit the widowed mother of these Davidsons. All the household are born in Tennessee except Ephraim. These children are in fact listed as the children of Margaret Clayton Davidson in the Davidson Genealogy, which reports Margaret Clayton as the wife of an unnamed Davidson who was the father of Thomas Jefferson Davidson. 1850 Federal Census, Franklin County, Alabama, 11 August 1851(?), District 5, page 153, Hse/Fam #726 Clayton Davidson 23 M Planter $5000 Real Estate born Tennessee [b abt 1827] Almira Davidson 29 F b Tennessee [b abt 1830] Ephraim Davidson 3 months M born Alabama [b abt April 1850] Janetta Davidson 24 F b Tennessee [b abt 1826] Mathew Davidson 15 M b Tennessee [b abt 1835] The other genealogies that report on Thomas B Jefferson and Sarah Miller Jefferson's family, which includes son Thomas Jefferson Davidson, have none of the Davidsons shown in the 1850 Franklin County, Alabama, census. This Margaret could not be the mother of Thomas Jefferson Davidson, since we have a report of that family intact in 1850, still in Tennessee. It appears at this point that the Davidson Genealogy has mixed two families of likely related Davidsons, and this branch had moved from Tennessee while the others stayed. But this appears to be the Matthew O who is the physician in St Charles, Arkansas in 1870. Margaret's husband, the father of Clayton, Matthew and the others is likely a brother to Thomas B Davidson. Thomas Jefferson Davidson, Thomas B's son, also had a son named Matthew Oliver Davidson. By 1900 Dr Matthew has moved to Smith County, Texas, where he living as a boarder with a family named Sykes. He is still single. Note that though his birthday is reported as April 1835, his age is 63, which would mean birth in 1837! 1900 Federal Census, Sebastian County, Arkansas, 15 June, Justice Precinct 5, Garden Valley, Disrtict 108, page 8B, Hse #137, Fam #138 Davidson, Matthew O Boarder W M April 1835 63 Single TN NC NC Physician

The Davidson Family Genealogy provides good information on Milus Davidson and his wife Ann Sophronia Carpenter. Censuses and family information report Milus born in Tennessee. He moved to Alabama, and his daughter Malissa Edward Davidson was born in Lawrence County, Alabama in 1846. Other Davidsons reported to be his siblings were in Franklin County, Alabama, for the 1850 census. His mother Margaret (Clayton) is reported living in the household of Clayton Davidson. "Milus DAVIDSON (Mr.) was born 2 Sep 1821 in Tennessee. He died 17 Jan 1873 in Arkansas County, Arkansas and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Milus married Ann Sophronia CARPENTER on 12 Sep 1844 in Lawrence County, Alabama. Ann was born 1827 in Mississippi. She died after 1880 in Arkansas County, Arkansas and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas." Though born in Tennessee, in 1850 we find him in Franklin County, Alabama, as are his mother and sibling, in a separate household nearby. The 1850 census year has been modified by hand, apparently, to indicate 1851. The date for this section of the census is 11 January 1851. 1850 Federal Census, Franklin County, Alabama, 11 January 1851(?), District 5, page 307 (scan p 154), Hse/Fam #730 Milus Davidson 30 M Farmer $2000 Real Estate b TN Ann Davidson 22 F b TN Geo Davidson 5 M Ala Malissa Davidson 3 F Ala Elinor Davidson 2 F Ala In 1860 he is living in or near St Charles, Arkansas County, Arkansas. 1860 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 28 July, Prairie Township, PO St. Charles, page 65, Hse #482, Fam #460 Milus Davidson 38 M W Farmer $16,000 Real Estate $17623 Personal b Tennessee [head] [b abt 1822] Suffrone Davidson 35F W Housekeeper Mississippi George W Davidson 15 M W Alabama Davidson, Malitia E (Melissa Edward) 13 F W Alabama Elenora Davidson 11 F W Alabama Milus and Suffrone are next door to his brother Alexander, a single man with several siblings and their mother Margaret living with him. 1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 7 July, Prairie Township, PO St Charles, page 96, Hse/Fam #199 Davidson, Milus 49 M W Farmer $1000 Real Estate $500 Personal b Tennessee Davidson, Ann S 43 F W Keeping House b Alabama Comer, Benjamin 27 M W b SC

The wife of Thomas B Davidson reported by most sources is Sarah Leeper Miller. The Davidson of Tennessee Genealogy (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genea/Dzmrtenn.html) has a different name: "Mr. DAVIDSON married Margaret (Margaret Sarah?) CLAYTON. Margaret was born 1799 in Tennessee." (One or more genealogy sources also report this person as Thomas James instead of Thomas B.) It appears this source has placed Thomas Jefferson Davidson in another family of Davidsons who also moved to Arkansas County, Arkansas. Information provided on the other family of Davidsons is good and detailed. But Thomas Jefferson has been incorrectly reported as a son of this family. I present source information in this genealogy that indicates his provenance. These Davidsons do appear to be related, due to similar names and birth places. But I have not been able to find the intersection point with the Davidson line of Thomas Jefferson and his father Thomas B (born Iredell Co NC), grandfather Alexander and great grandfather Joseph. The genealogies providing fairly extensive information for this line lack a Davidson man who was married to Margaret Clayton, though there are Claytons in the line. Compare this to the 1850 census, where the wife of Thomas Davidson (father of Thomas J Davidson) is named Sarah, age is 53 yrs old (b abt 1797) and born in South Carolina. See more discussion on this in the Notes for Thomas Jefferson Davidson. In line with the incomplete details, lack of previous generations and lone status of the Davidson Family Genealogy, there appears to be some confusion in that source. I am following the other family information to report Sarah Leeper Miller as the wife of Thomas B Davidson and mother of Thomas Jefferson Davidson. 1850 Federal Census, Marshall County, Tennessee, 14 November, Subdivision 53, page 3, Hse/Fam #37 Thos Davidson 67 M Farmer $3250 Real Estate born North Carolina Sarah Davidson 53 F b SC Malicy [Malissa] Davidson 22 F born Tennessee Thos J Davidson 21 M born Tennessee [married Sarah "Sallie" Wakefield] Elizabeth Davidson 17 F born Tennessee William L Davidson 15 M born Tennessee Some genealogies have earlier generations. The parents of Thomas B Davidson was Alexander Davidson and Jane Henrietta Clayton, or Henrietta Jane Clayton. There seems to be a connection with the Claytons that relate to the Davidsons of Alabama who later moved to Arkansas County, Arkansas, where we find Thomas B's son Thomas Jefferson Davidson. The mother of Milus and Clayton and Alexander Davidson was Margaret T Clayton. Milus Davidson married Sophronia Carpenter. Her cousin Eleanor Carpenter married Obediah S Davidson, another son of Alexander and thus a brother of Thomas Davidson Eleanor and Obediah got married in Lawrence County, Alabama, where Milus and his siblings were living with their widowed mother Margaret Clayton Davidson. We do not have the name of Margaret's husband. This would help tie these two Davidson groups together firmly. By 1860, no more children are left at home with Thomas and Sarah. They are still in Marshall County, Tennessee, and live in Belfast until their death. 1860 Federal Census, Marshall County, Tennessee, 1 June, District 5, PO Belfast, page 1, Hse/Fam #2 Thos Davidson 77 M Farmer $10,000 Real Estate $3200 Personal b NC Sarah Davidson 62 F b SC ------------------- Thomas B Davidson Birth May 29, 1783 Rowan County, North Carolina Death Mar 3, 1864 Belfast, Marshall County, Tennessee Parents: Alexander Davidson (1745 - 1818) Henrietta Jane Clayton Davidson (1750 - 1816) Spouse Sara Leeper Miller Davidson (1798 - 1874) Children: Malinda Pamelia Davidson Davis (1818 - 1887) Sophrona Davidson Chapman (1819 - 1885) Cyreenia Ameline Davidson Coffey (1821 - 1896) Napoleon Bonaparte Davidson (1823 - 1841) Mary Jane Davidson Hardin (1827 - 1903) Henrietta Elizabeth Davidson Wood (1832 - 1905) William L. The Davidson Genealogy website (Davidson of Tennessee Genealogy, http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genea/Dzmrtenn.html) reports that Thomas Jefferson Davidson's mother was named Margaret Clayton, with a possible middle name of Sarah. However, several genealogies report that the mother of Thomas Jefferson was Sarah Leeper Miller. His father is reported as Thomas B Davidson. The genealogies show no other wife. T J does not appear in censuses of the family of Margaret. In 1850 she is a widow in Alabama, in the household of her son Clayton. The siblings there match those reported by the Davidson Family Genealogy, except for T J and Milus, who is older and already married, also living in Alabama. The Davidson Family Genealogy has apparently erred in placing Thomas Jefferson Davidson as a sibling to Clayton and Matthew O, sons of Margaret andDavidson. But they must be kin, since T J had a son also name Matthew Oliver. They were all born in Tennessee. Ages match for Margaret's husband to be a brother or cousin of Thomas Jefferson's father Thomas B Davidson. As of October 2008, when I started added this family to my Butler genealogy, I have not found the connection. In 1850, the wife of Thomas J's father is named Sarah, matching the reports that Sarah Leeper Miller was his mother. Sarah Leeper's birth state of South Carolina matches the census report for Sarah Davidson in 1850. Her birth date in the genealogies is 29 December 1798, also matching her age of 53 in 1850. One of the genealogies that reports on Thomas B Jefferson and his wife Sarah Leeper Miller is the Clayton Family Genealogy. This tree does report a Margaret Clayton, around this same period, but she married a person reported only as Neel. No dates are given for her birth, but her father George Clayton was born in 1723. The Davidson Family information has no previous generations, and reports the father of Milus, Thomas Jefferson, Matthew and their siblings with unknown first name. so tit is possible some generational confusion has had effect here. 1850 Federal Census, Marshall County, Tennessee, 14 November, Subdivision 53, page 3, Hse/Fam #37 Thos Davidson 67 M Farmer $3250 Real Estate born North Carolina [b abt 1783] Sarah Davidson 53 F b SC [Sarah Leeper Miller] [b abt 1797] Thos J Davidson 21 M born Tennessee [b abt 1829] 1860 Federal Census, Crawford County, Arkansas, 30 June, Richland Township, PO Van Buren, page 52, Hse #348, Fam #346 Thos J Davidson 31 M Farmer $10,500 Real Estate b Tennessee Sarah A Davidson 17 F b Tennessee [Sarah "Sallie" Amanda Wakefield] In 1870, we find T J and Sarah in Arkansas County, where other Davidsons have moved.
