Joan is known by several names, which may be confusing to some readers. She is commonly reported as Joan of Pontieu, but her name may be given in the French form, Jeanne of Ponthieu. The Dutch form is Johanna. "Eleanor was born in Castile, Spain, daughter of Saint Ferdinand, King of Castile and Leon and his second wife, Jeanne, Countess of Ponthieu" -- Wikipedia, "Eleanor of Castile," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_of_Castile She is also identified with her place of birth Dammartin, as in her surname on the memorial on Find a Grave. ---------------------- Jeanne de Dammartin Birth 1220 Death Mar 16, 1279 French and Spanish Nobility. Queen of Castile. Born the eldest daughter of Simon de Dammartin and Marie de Ponthieu. She married Ferdinand III of Castile in 1235 and bore him five children, including Eleonore, later Queen of England. She succeeded her father as Countess of Aumale in 1239 and her mother as Countess of Ponthieu and Montreuil in 1251. After Ferdinands death she quarreled with her stepson Alfonso X of Castile over the lands and income she should have received as dowager queen. Due to her strained relations with Alfonso she returned to Ponthieu where she married Jean de Nesle in 1261. Her daughter, the English queen Eleanor of Castile, was her successor in Ponthieu. Her son and co-ruler in Aumale, Ferdinand II, Count of Aumale, predeceased her, so she was succeeded by her grandson John I, Count of Aumale, deceased at the Battle of Courtrai, 11 July 1302. Joan was the eldest daughter of Simon of Dammartin, Count of Ponthieu (1180- 21 September 1239) and his wife Marie of Ponthieu, Countess of Montreuil (17 April 1199- 1251). Her paternal grandparents were Alberic II, Count de Dammartin and Mahaut de Clermont, daughter of Renaud de Clermont, Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis, and Clémence de Bar. The Millennium File compilation reports that Margaret Erdington was born in 1353, but other sources report that she married Roger Corbett in 1363, so surely her birth was before 1353. James Kirby's tree reports she was born in 1345 and married in 1863. Millennium File Margaret Erdington Birth 1353 Death Jan 1395 Spouse Roger Corbet Children Robert Corbet

Sources differ on the wives of Griffith and his son Owen, Prince of Powys. It appears that Hawyse Le Strange, daughter of John IV Le Strange of Knockin, married Griffith (Welsh spelling Gruffydd), and their son Owen married Joan Corbett. The Tudorplace genealogy of Corbett, Le Strange and Plantagenet reports that Hawyse had a sister Catherine not reported by some other sources. This Catherine seems to be the wife of Robert Corbet (born abt 1223) and the mother of Joan Corbet, who married Owen ap Griffith de la Pole, Prince of Powys. Some sources include the de la Pole on the names of the children only, while I have found one source that includes this for the father Griffith. de la Pole is found as de la Poole in some sources. The dates given for the marriage of Griffith ap Wennonwen to Hawyse Le Strange would mean she was married at age 8. This seems strange, but child marriage was a common pattern among the Norman and other nobility in the Middle Ages. Few details are available in sources, so I am following this information from the Tudorplace genealogy, until I find more firm information that provides a better date or additional information to clarify this situation.
The Strube genealogy for the Plantagenets reports that Hawyse (Hawise) married Owen Ap Griffith de la Pole, Prince of Powys. The Tudorplace Strange information reports that Hawise married Owen's father, Griffith A Wennonwen. The latter further reports a daughter that other sources do not have, a sister of Hawise named Catherine. This says that Catherine married Robert Corbett (Born abt 1223), whose daughter Joan Corbet (born abt 1253) married Owen ap Griffith de la Pole, Prince of Powys. A descendant, William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, married a daughter of Geoffrey Chaucer and Maud de Berghersh. -- http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/STRANGE.htm
