Notes for Andrew Jackson DEMPSEY

A census record in Bolivar County, Mississippi for an Andrew Demsey may be a
record for Andrew Jackson Dempsey. The age matches our Andrew Jackson Dempsey
who lived later in Arkansas County, Arkansas.

One discrepancy is that this record reports Andrew as born in Arkansas, rather
than Mississippi, as later Arkansas censuses report. But James C Dempsey, who
is likely his brother, was born in Mississippi.

Many families in the Ethel, Arkansas, area were back and forth to counties in
Mississippi across the river, from which they moved to Ethel. Other families
with a presence in Mississippi border counties on their migration westward,
and where some stayed, are Jenkins, Butler and Davidson.

1850 Federal Census, Bolivar County, Mississippi, 9 November, Bolivar
District, scan p 382, Hse/Fam #73
Benjamin Perryman 71 M Farmer Tennessee [born abt 1779]

Rachel Smith 17 F Mississippi [born abt 1833]
Andrew Demsy 26 M Laborer Arkansas [born abt 1824]
James C Demsy 22 M No Occupation Mississippi [born abt 1828]

The 1850 census does not report the family relationships of individuals.
Looking at the configuration of this household, I would guess that Mary E
Smith is the daughter of Ben and Mary Perryman, and Albert her husband.
Andrew and James are likely brothers. It would appear that Andrew is working
for Mr Perryman on the farm. I have found no earlier information on Andrew
Jackson Dempsey's parents or family to confirm this fraternal relationship
with James.

Both Jack and his father are enumerated here as Jackson. In 1850, his father
was listed as Andrew. Neighbors knew the son as Jackson, but his full name
was Andrew Jackson Dempsey, like his father. His gravestone has his full
name, as does his father's.

In 1880, Jack is living with his sister Mollie (Mary) Henderson, next door to
a family named Vanderford, with whom their father Andrew Jackson Dempsey is
living and working.

It appears that Jack married about 1884. No marriage record has been found.

In 1910 Jack and his family are living on the White River. Most people in
this section of Prairie Township are fishermen. Note that both Andy Middleton
and Jackson Dempsie are reported as Head of this household and owners of their
home. For some odd reason, the enumerator has recorded no first name for the
Jack's wife or his two daughters. No firm documentation has been found for
Jack's wife, not even a marriage record, but there are some indications that
she was a Middleton. That matches their residential situation in 1910, being
resident in the household of one Andy Middleton. Andy is reported as a
50-year-old widower. He is likely the brother odf Jack's wife.

Justin Dempsey has very complete information on Jack's family with exact dates
for all his children, including those who died young, unidentified in the
censuses. Howsever, note that he identifies Jack's wife as Emma Vanderford.
Justin has no documentation on his genelaogy, so we have no way of evaluating
the validity of his information..

Ancestry transcribes the 1910 census name of Roe as Roc. From early
indications, I thought Roe was the son of Jackson Dempsey, born in 1858. The
I found this 1910 census, indicating that Roc's father Jackson reported as age
40 was born about 1870! Yet in 1930 Roe/Roc's father Jack is reported as 72,
a gain of 30 years in 20!. All the other census ages make him born about
1858. So for some reason, Jack was reported as about 10 or 11 years younger
than he was.

By 1930, Roe had married, they had moved inland and he was then raising
cotton. This census also has his name as Roc.

Linnie Dempsey was Jack's son. Jack, age 82, is in the household of Linnie
and Gladys Dempsey, confirming that my Jackson Dempsey, father of Roc, is the
same person as Jack Dempsey, father of Linnie, whose connections we knew
otherwise.

----------------------
Andrew Jackson Dempsey was born Arkansas and his brother James C. Dempsey was
born Washington Co., MS. They lived with their stepfather, Benjamin F.
Perryman and mother Rachel Dempsey Perryman who had married by 1836. In the
1850 census the wife had title "Mrs." before her name Rachel. In other
families, the wives were also titled "Mrs."

Their parents were Barnett Dempsey and Rachel (maiden name unknown), but might
be Smith. Barnett Dempsey and family were listed 1830 Washington Co., MS,
census as "Barnard" Dempsey although numerous records collected listed his
first name as "Barnett." They lived in Arkansas County, AR, about 1818 tax
list for Arkansas County, which at that time included three townships. They
lived in the southern twp. which became Chicot Co., AR, identified by numerous
neighbors on the list around Lake Village, Chicot County.

Barnett Dempsey was previously married per numerous sons but no data has been
found as to whom married or migration pattern to Arkansas. He did marry
Rachel about 1818. On the early tax list for Arkansas County, AR (which
included Chicot Co. and two others, Desha and Arkansas Co.) a Frederick Smith
was listed as adjoining neighbor for several years. Rachel was possibly a
daughter.

The Dempsey family had land grants in the northern tip of Washington Co., MS,
that became Bolivar Co., MS, 1836. Per deed records, a son (likely stepson by
first wife) William H. Dempsey deeded land to "Rachel Perryman and her four
children: Eliza Jane McJunkin, Andrew J. Dempsey, James C. Dempsey, and Mary
Eveline Dempsey. " (My ancestor was Eliza Jane Dempsey (b. abt 1819 AR) had
married Samuel McJunkin, a near neighbor to the Dempsey family of Washington,
now Bolivar Co., MS.

I agree with your conclusion that Mary E. Dempsey had married Albert Smith,
but the Rachel Smith listed in the 1850 census may be a daughter of Rachel
Dempsey Perryman, if Rachel was pregnant when Barnett Dempsey died Feb. 1833
per deed record. But she was not identified as one of the "four children"
listed in the abovementioned deed. If the 1850 census age was slightly wrong,
she could be daughter of Benj. Perryman and Rachel. It is a HARD puzzle to
solve as to ancestry of this family.

Notes for Azalia DEMPSEY

For some reason, the enumerator failed to record any given name for the wife or
the two daughters of this family. The second daughter, reported born about
1905, may be Azalia, whose birth date on her gravestone in Mt Pleasant
Cemetery in Ethel is Jan 1906.

In 1910 Jack Dempsey and his family were living in the household of one Andy
Middleton, widow. Both Andy and and Jack are reported as Head of this
household and owners of their home. The enumerator has recorded no first name
for Jack's wife or his two daughters. No firm documentation has been found
for Jack's wife, not even a marriage record, but there are some indications
that she was a Middleton, including the fact that the head of this household
is Andy Middleton, of an age to be the older brother of Jack's wife.

In 1940 Elvis is reported in the household of his stepfather Rube Ellenberg,
whom his mother married about a year after Elvis' father Roe Dempsey died in

Elvis' sister Rosella is reported here as the daughter of Rube instead of the
stepdaughter. And his brother Thelma is understandably reported as a girl.

Notes for Frank B DEMPSEY

All the records we have found for Frank have his name as either Frank or Frank
B. At least one genealogy reports his fuill name as Benjamin Franklin
Dempsey. No documnetation of this full name has been found.

Ages reported for Frank by censuses or other records indicate birth in 1880 or
1881. His parents married after the census in 1880, so he would have been
born in 1881. His grave has the year only as 1880. This is not definitive.
We have found a year or more error in many gravestone dates for both birth and
death. No death record has been found.

Justin Dempsey has a few details in a sparse and undocumented genealogy, that
may be helpful. He has what appears to be Gladys' married name Edwards, but
does not have the name of her husband.

With that surname I was able to find the marriage record, which give Gladys'

Notes for Jackson T DEMPSEY

It is unclear how this Jackson T Dempsey is related to the family of Linne O
Dempsey and Gladys Lucille McSwain. Their son "Jack" was Carew Jackson
Dempsey, and his details were published in an obituary referenced in this
database. It appears Jackson T was a cousin, as their ages are not far apart.

Notes for Linnie O'Dell DEMPSEY

Linnie's Social Security records report him born in 1902. So he should show up
in the household census in 1910. But in what appears to be his father's
household, there are three children, Roe and two daughters whose names are not
given, one born about 1900 and the other about 1905. Where was Linnie in
1910? For that matter, where was he in the 1920 census?

In 1929, Linnie married Gladys McSwain, daughter of Wiley Carew McSwain and
Susie Frances Lowrey.

In the 19309 census they are reported living with Manuel and Callie Criswell.
Manuel's wife Callie is a McSwain, the daughter of George B McSwain and
Harriett Padgett, and thus Gladys' aunt.
