I got Mattie Bell's name first from her grandson, my first cousin, Asa Lee Jenkins in 2007. Asa Lee gave me a lot of Jenkins family information on 3 May 2007, when we gathered in his son Randall Jenkins' home in Chickasha, Oklahoma, along with Randy's son James and all our wives and my mother Lou Ila Jenkins for a famliy evening after many years separation. Asa Lee told me Matties's father's name was James Grubbs and her mother was named Martha Bell Barefoot. I was surprised some years later to find that Asa Lee Jenkins' granddaughter-in-law, Erica Casperson Jenkins, reported in her genealogy that Mattie Bell's parents were John Payton Dennis and Katie Magby. After John's death, Katie married Thomas Duncan Barefoot II, who died in 1907. After Thomas' death, Katie married Jefferson Davis Luttrell. This confirms Erica's report that Mattie's father was John Dennis. Thomas Duncan Barefoot was Mattie's stepfather. However, even though Mattie's mother signed her marriage license as Katie Barefoot, Mattie's name on her marriage license is Mattie B Dennis. A conundrum, and no doubt why Erica Jenkins reported Mattie's name as Mattie Dennis and . Mattie Bell married James (Jim) Grubbs. The head of the Kansas household of Grubbs is also James. Their marriage license was signed by her mother and his father. The ages in the census indicate she was about a year younger than James, and born about 1890. But a photo of what appears to be her grave, posted on a memorial on Find a Grave, shows the date of birth as 8 Dec 1898. The date on the grave must be wrong, though this otherwise appears to be the correct person's grave. They originally lived in Tuttle where she is buried, before moving to Anadarko where he was in business. This is not the first grave I have found that has the wrong birth date. Mattie's husband died in 1941. She moved some time later to Oklahoma City and was reported there in several city directories. Her obituary in 1990 reported she had moved to Oklahoma City 47 years before. That would be about 1943. The place would be either Grady County, or Brady, a town in Garvin County, near Grady County. At the time of his birth, this was Pickens County of Chickasaw Nation. Residential information for Robert Dennis' family places them in Pontotoc County for the 1910 census. But Pontotoc ran across the north of Chickasaw Nation, and expanded to the southeast in a jagged boundary with Pickens County. Chickasha, the county seat of current Grady County, was right at the boundary between Pickens County and Pontotoc County, Chickasaw Nation. But current Grady County, Oklahoma includes parts of both old Pickens County and Pontotoc County, Chickasaw Nation, in the northwest corner of the Nation.
