From information on their age at marriage in the 1920 census, it appears Ray
married shortly after registering from the draft. He married divorcee Reedie
Joan Meek Christian, and they are enumerated in the same township of Washita
County, with her son Ralph Christian. The enumerator has listed Ralph with
his stepfather's surname. This is corrected in the 1930 census listing.

Note that the 1930 census reports that Reedie was first married at age 23. If
she is 35, that means she was born about 1895, it could have been 1894. That
is consistent with the record in the 1920 census. If she was fist married (to
Matthew Henry Christian) at age 23, that would make it 1918. But in January
1920 her son Ralph Christian is already 8, meaning he was born about 1911.
Since in 1920, she is age 24 and already married to Ray (Roy?) Dew, she must
be reporting the age at which she married Ray, not when she was first married,
which is what the census asks.

Notes for Elizabeth DICKERSON

Elizabeth's first married name was Long. A couple of genealogies and some
nearby families in the censuses indicate that Elizabeth's maiden name was
Dickerson. In the 1920 census, her son William is single and head of his
household, and living with him is an aunt named Eliza Dickerson. This name
being a form of Elizabeth, it would not at first seem that this might be a
sister of Elizabeth, but in fact that turns out to be the case.

In the 1850 census, found after the later censuses, both Elizabeth and the
younger Eliza Dickerson are reported as daughters of Simeon and Livie
Dickerson. (At least one genealogy reports her mother's name as Sivel,
probably due to a misreading or mistranscription of the census entry.)

1850 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 20 September, Precinct 1, page 8, Hse
#52, Fam #56
Simeon Dickerson 45 M Farmer $0 Real Estate Value declared b NC [b abt 1805]

After Peter Christian's death, Elizabeth Long is still in Cass County in the
1880 and 1900 censuses. In 1880 she is head of the household, but with the
occupation of housekeeper. She is still working a farm though, as indicated
by the occupation of Farm Laborer for her 19-year-old son William S Long (who
is called William S Christian by the enumerator).

1880 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 18 June, Precinct 6, District 15,

Christian [Long], Joan Lee W F 16 Dau Single At Home TX SC AL [abt 1864]

In 1900 she is reported as a Farmer, head of household with her two children
still in her household. Her son William Long is still single at age 39, still
working on the farm. Her widowed daughter Lee Tate, age 36, is living with
them, as well as Lee's daughter, 9-year-old Cora.

Also enumerated in the same household and family is Ransom Giles, a
25-year-old widowed black man, whose relationship is described as Servant, and
whose occupation is described as Farm Laborer.

The census reports that Elizabeth only bore two children. Her daughter Lee is
already a widow after 12 years of marriage and one child. William is still
single. The census reports that Elizabeth was married for 48 years. This
would have to be the total for both marriages.

Also she has been a widow since about 1878, when we think Peter Christian
died. That was 22 years before 1900. So it appears the 48 years refers to
how long since she first got married, which would be about age 25. This seems
late for a first marriage in those days. So that figure of 48 years is
uncertain. But in the 1850 census Elizabeth is reported as 22 years old.

No death or burial record has been found for Elizabeth. But it appears she
died between the 1900 and 1910 censuses. She does not appear with her
children in 1910. Her son William is living in the home of her daughter Lea
Tate, who, though reported as a widow in the 1900 census, is now enumerated
here with her husband John H Tate.

Notes for Elizabeth DICKERSON

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900
Benjamin Terry
Gender: Male
Birth 1704 VA
Spouse : Elizabeth Irby [Elizabeth Dickerson]
Spouse Birth Year 1708
Marriage 1724 VA

One descendant's SAR apllicaint reports Benjamin's birth place as "Presumably
Ireland." However, other evidence indicates he was born in Pittsylvania
County, Virginia. Further, tracing back the family line, we are taken to
England, instead of Ireland. It is still possible that an earlier ancestor
has roots in Ireland. Terry family tradition is very strong on an Irish
origin. My grandmother Julia Virginia Terry Jenkins used to mention the Irish
origins of the Terrys when she would tell me stories about their family. She
also said she had Indian (Eastern Cherokee) ancestors.

Researcher D Hicks comments on the original marriage record for Elizabeth and
Benjamin Terry.

"Benjamin Terry
"[On Benjamin's will, in reference to his wife Elizabeth,] Irby was
handwritten in the margin of the court records years later. Probably by a
researcher - possibly a runoff from writing on their own paper. However it
came to be, the word "IRBY" is not part of the original document and should
not be picked up be subsequent researchers and transcribers as such."
-- Marriage Record for Benjamin Terry,
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=worldmarr_ga&h=1205787&ti=0&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t12434156_p95281963_kpidz0q3d95281963z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgPLz0q3dpid

Superficially, Benjamin Terry in his will names his wife as Elizabeth Irby.

"In the name of God Amen I, Benjamin Terry Senr. of Pittsylvania County and
Parish of Camden being in my perfect sinces and memory thanks to God for the
same but considering the frailty of this Life and the uncertainty of Death,
... Item, I lend to my beloved wife Elizabeth [Irby] ..."
-- Transcribed by Julia Clark,
http://genforum.genealogy.com/terry/messages/7273.html

But there is evidence the name "Irby" was added, in another hand. there is
some damage to the will manuscript. Extensive examination and analysis has
been done on this document, and all related documents, by Margie Brown. Heavy
circumstantial evidence from family names indicates that Elizabeth's maiden
name was Dickerson.

Elizabeth is reported by one or more genealogies as having died in 1760, the
same year her husband Benjamin wrote his will. She is named as executor for
her husband. I have not found evidence of her actual death. Probate does not
seem to comment that she was not still living when the will was probated in
December 1771, but does appoint only the two sons as executors.

---------------------------------
The above Last Will and Testament of Benjamin Terry Deceased was presented in
Court by Nathaniel Terry and Benjamin Terry the Executors therein named and
proved by the oaths of two of the Witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded
and on the motion of the said Executors who made oath according to Same.

Certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form given
Security whereupon they together with Isaac Read their security entered into
and Acknowledged their bond according to Same.

A few years ago, another researcher, Charles Owens, insisted that Champness
Terry was the husband to Elizabeth Irby (some have her maiden name as
Dickerson). Others have her husband as Benjamin, which frankly doesn't make a
lot of sense to me, but maybe it was another Benjamin? I believe Benjamin was
their son, who also married Elizabeth Irby or Elizabeth Parker (? cousins).

Anyway - I am writing you to let you know that I have DNA matched from my
Elizabeth Truheart Garland to the Irby line. This tells me that Elizabeth
Garland likely had 3 husbands; Nathaniel Dickerson, James Overton (I also am
DNA matched to), and unknown Irby (poss. Edmund?).

I followed the E B tree all the way down to E B (Sheryl is the manager). He
is a descendant of Irby, who owned many slaves. I believe that Elizabeth Irby
(not Dickerson) was the daughter to Elizabeth Truhart Garland Dickerson
Overton Irby, and married into the Terry family (a Benjamin or Champness). I
have yet to find DNA evidence for Dickerson, but still looking.

Perhaps there was a Benjamin Terry who married Elizabeth Dickerson who was a
daughter to Nathaniel Dickerson and Elizabeth Truhart Garland Dickerson. This
may have led to some of the confusion. Don't know. Thought you might like to
know about this new DNA evidence. I will transfer some of your data to my
tree. Thanks.

Terry/Irby/Garland, etc.)

Dickinson. Birth states match those reported in 1850, and we can recognize
and match most of the children. The child reported as C T does not match any
of the 1850 children by name. But being female, in the order of birth, this
should be Frances (spelled Francis in 1850). PA would be Ann, and E must be
Eliza, though the age we woudl expect is 22, not 28. Elizabeth was already
married by thiat time. Since the youngerst child W H is reproted as 7 years

memorial for her son James Whitson Green on Find a Grave. Ann M probably
somehow represents Elizabeth, unless Marvel had four wives. Marvel's FAG
memorial says he is buried with Lucina, his third wife.

late 1853 or early 1854. Marvel married Ella Wood in May 1854, and
Elizabeth's last child Martha was born in late 1853 to early 1854, according
to her reproted age 6 in the 1860 census.

Notes for Ida May DILLINGHAM

Massachusetts, Birth Records, 1840-1915
Ida May Dillingham
Birth 2 May 1896 Boston, Massachusetts
Father Frank Dillingham
Mother Elsie

Ida May married Benjamin F Lovin. They lived in Dallas, Texas. It is not
known where they met or married. Before that marriage Ben had been married to
Ruby Larkin, with whom he was enumerated in the 1910 census in Alex, Oklahoma.
Ruby's granddaughter reports that Ben divorced Ruby but he took the children.
But only one child is recorded from that marriage, named Clyde. He appears in
the household with Ben and Ida May in the 1920 census, along with Ida Mae's
1-month-old son Clarence, in Dallas, Texas.

Ruby Larkin's grandson reports that her son Clyde was born in 1917. In 1918,
Ben reported himself Single, with his mother and one child dependent on him.
He in Liberty County, Texas, near Houston, but this time.

U.S. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

Born 28 July 1890 Washita (Caddo County), Oklahoma
Residence Gladsell (Liberty County), Texas
Single, Occupation Log Hauler, Grogan Mfg Co
Reports his mother and one child are dependent on him.
Gray Eyes, Light Hair
Registration 5 June 1917 Liberty County, Texas

This means that he and Ruby divorced soon after the birth of Clyde in 1817.He
would have married Ida May some time in late 1918 or early 1919, since in the
January 1920 census, Ida May's son is reported as 1 month old. He and Ida May
must have met in the Houston, Texas, area, where he was living in 1918. I
have not found their marriage record. They are reported in Dallas in January
1920.
