The above genealogy and the FAG memorial below both report that Sally died in
1915. No photo of the grave is provided for the memorial on Find a Grave.
But in the 1910 census, the wife of Jefferson Davis Luttrell is named Mattie
and is only 27 years old, whereas Sally was 37 in 1900.

Further in the 1910 census the youngest chidlren are entered first, followed
by the older ones. This is another indication that the older children were
the children of a previous wife -- Sally in this case. Other records I have
been running across tell us this Mattie was Mattie Shaw, whose first husband
was named Price. This is also affirmed by the name of the first child in the
1910 census, James Price.

Dora Luttrell's mother is commonly reported in genealogies as Sally Draper.
But the 1910 census would seem to indicate that Dora was the daughter of
Mattie Shaw Price Luttrell. This also matches the report in 1910 that Mattie
and Mr Luttrell had been married 6 years. This means they married about 1904.
This would mean that Andrew Luttrell, age 5 in 1910, was Mattie's first child
with Jeff. Andrew was the informant for Mattie's death certificate when she
died in 1955.

Mattie and Jeff were divorced a few years later, since she lived until 1955,
and Jeff married Katie Dennis Barefoot some time after 1920, when Katie was
reported alone with her chidlren in Baylor County, Texas.

Notes for Joan DU MARAIS

This family name appears in many forms from the spelling of the time and later.
The most common modern English form of this name, I believe, is Marris. It is
found in French as Marais. the latter name is also well-known in South Africa
among the Afrikaner community, from the strong Huguenot stream that joined the
Dutch Afrikaners in Southern Africa during the Catholic persecutions of the
French Protestants. The name of this woman appears in genealogies and
histories as Marreis, Mareis, Marais and De Maris, De Mareis, De Marais or Du
Marais. It appears Joan was the first wife of Theobald (Theobold) Second
Butler of Ireland, with marriage in about 1222, when she was 22 years old.
But Joan died soon after the marriage. Some factors indicate that she died in
childbirth, with the son Theobald who became the 3rd Butler of Ireland. Some
genealogies report Theobald as a child of the second wife, Rohese (or Rohesia)
de Verdun. But the most careful information seems to indicate the facts of
the matter to be that Joan was Theobald's mother, and the other children were
Rohese's children. Some sources report that Joan was the mother of Theobold
3rd Butler, while others indicate his mother was the second wife, Rohese De
Verdun. Some sources report Theobald 3rd Butler as born in 1223, which would
be before Joan's death, while another date reported for his birth is 1227,
making Rohese his mother. Few sources report all these wives, children and
facts together. Some have only two wives, some only one wife with Theobald as
Joan's son, some with three wives and no children of Joan, and none of the
third wife. Thus dates of marriages are not necessarily given by the same
sources reporting on the children or their particular dates. I am following
the most complete and seemingly consistent sources and filling in details from
others where missing.

Notes for Sarah Ann DUCKETT

Sarah Ann Duckett is most often found in genealogies under the name Sarah A
Nichols, the name on her marriage record with Z T Barnett. She is clearly
documented in early life and in her burial information as the daughter of John
A and Jane (Hamilton) Duckett. Perhaps Nichols was a first married name. I
have not yet found documentation for her change of name from her maiden name
of Duckett to the name of Nichols on the marriage record.

In the 1850 census Sarah A Duckett is 6 years old, making her born about 1844.
This early report is more likely to be accurate than later ones and the common
one found in genealogies of 1850. 1860 is similar, reporting her 15 yeras old
(b 1844-1845).

In the 1860 census, Sarah is reported as Sarah A E Duckett. The 1900 census
tells us the A stands for Ann. I have not found any documentation for the
initial E. Her Civil War pension record has her name as Sarah A J Barnett. I
have not found what this J initial stood for either. She is normally referred
to as Sarah A. One instance of her middle name Ann occurs. Her grave has
Sarah A, but the funeral/obit card carrying the record of her burial, while
providing much family and personal information, has her as Sarah H.

Sarah's related funeral card has her name as Sarah H Barnett. This card gives
us further information that might indicate this Sarah and Taylor are a
different couple from our Zachary Taylor Barnett and Sarah Nichols. Sarah's
funeral card reports more family information including Sarah's parents' names.
Her father is reported as John A Duckett, whereas the name of Zachary Taylor
Barnett's wife was reported on their marriage record as Sarah Nichols.

The name Nichols might have been a previous married name, accounting for the
name difference. Or perhaps John Duckett was actually Sarah's stepfather, the
second husband of her mother Jane. I have not found any records for Sarah
before the 1900 census.

Sarah's name on the Funeral Card is Sarah H Barnett, while her grave and the
memorial on Find a Grave, as well as the photo of her gravestone, have her
name as Sarah A Barnett, matching the Civil War pension record name of Sarah A
J Barnett. I have not seen any other documentation or discussion on her other
middle initial J.

Notes for Sarah Jane DUFFEY

I suspected that S J Green's first name is Sarah, and this was finally
confirmed when a memorial for her on Find a Grave came up in a search only
after extensive searching on 1 October 2016. The memorial reveals she was
Sarah Jane Duffy. Other records spell the Duffie and Duffee. And it is
Duffey on her son Berlie's death certificate.

U.S., Confederate Pensions, 1884-1958
Widow, Pension File #16831
Spouse Mrs S J Green, Age 63 [b abt 1846]
Resident of Texas 53 years [since abt 1856]

Application 17 Aug 1909 Upshur County, Texas
Thomas James Green
Service, Cavalry, 4 years
Death 13 Feb 1898 Upshur County, Texas
Marriage 6 Feb 1871 Upshur County, Texas
Affidavit Signed by J A Derrick and R A Muncrief

In 1850, Sarah Jane was reported as 4 years old, in Henry County, Georgia.

1850 Federal Census, Henry County, Georgia, 21 October, District 43, page 3

The next census reports them in Upshur County, Texas, near Simpsonville.

Sarah Duffey 15 F born GA [b abt 1845]
Mary Duffey 8 F born GA [b abt 1852]
Ellen Duffey 5 F born GA [b abt 1855]

The report that all these children were born in Georgia informs us that the
Duffey family moved to Upshur County after 1855. This correlates with Sarah's
report in 1909 that she had lived in Upshur County 53 years. That would make
the move about 1856.

In 1880, Sarah Jane Duffy is reported as the wife of Thomas J Green, under her
middle name Jane. Thomas' father Rev Anderson Green, is also in the
household. Though Anderson is reported married, no wife is reported in the
household.

----------------------
Several genealogies have the following record attached to S J, wife of Thomas
James Green. The bride is named "Miss S J McQuary" and the groom simply J T
Green The date of marriage differs from that on SJ''s widow's pension
application, yet these genealogies, or at least some of them, also has the
apparently correct widow's pension application attached to her too, and the
censuses for Nancy Easley and Thomas James Green.

Note also that in the Hamilton Count marriage record, the husband's initials
are J T, instead of T J (for Thomas James), which probably indicates a
different person. While this marriage took place in Hamilton County, SJ says
on her application that she has lived in Pittsburg, Upshur County, for 53
years, that is since her family moved there from Georgia.

But that genealogy assigns this date of 25 Nov 1880 to the marriage of T J
Green and Sarah Jane Duffy. The pension record has to be the correct one,
since it is filled, signed and witnessed before the County Judge in the place
where they lived. The S J McQuary in the Hamilton County marriage record is
apparently a different S J than the S J Green who applied for the wife's
pension of Thomas James Green in Upshur County, Texas in 1871.
