Notes for Edward Caliste DUMOND

The Dumond family had no information on the Dumond ancestors, and only some
vague memories about Collise. There was a family legend that the first Dumond
of their line had come to Arkansas as a stowaway on a ship from France. There
were no documents with the spelling of the name or any information.

The name was know in oral memory and recorded by Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain,
my mother-in-law and Edward C's granddaughter. She had collected all the
information she could gather form her memory, family members, and records she
could get access to. She had written the name as Edward Collise Dumond. She
had no names farther back than him.

In February 2008, I was able to locate some additional information for the
first time. I found some censuses with Edward and even his parents. I found
that the middle name, also the name of Edward's father, was the French name
Caliste. This led to some genealogies of the Dumond/Dumont family lines in
Quebec and back to France. I found several different family lines and some
discussions of Dumont/Dumond researchers mostly in Quebec.

The oral memory of a stowaway on a boat could still very well be true, being
handed down from as far back as the early migration from France to Quebec. On
the other hand, it could be related to the migration down the Mississippi
River system from Canada to Arkansas when it was still French territory.
Several other Quebec families moved to Arkansas Post under French and Spanish
administrations. The related Depuis family from Quebec likewise came down the
rivers to Arkansas Post and St Charles under the Spanish administration of the
territory, when Arkansas was part of Spanish New Madrid Territory.

One of the Quebec researchers had hired a professional genealogist to discover
information on his line. This clarified the distinctions between two similar
lines and confirmed the parentage at one point, where apparently some earlier
genealogies had confused two lines of Dumonts. I am using those genealogies
along with censuses I have found to reconstruct the Dumond Arkansas line.

Other variations of the name are DuMond and Demoe.

The spelling of Edward's name in all these genealogies is Edward Caliste.
This is a proper French-language name form. The family were in Arkansas
County in 1860, and Edward is with his parents in Arkansas County, Arkansas.
In the 1860 census they were enumerated in Old River Township, with a Swan
Lake post office.

In 1860, the head of the family is Caliste (though spelled here as what looks
like Calist), wife Sara M and Edward
C is 8 months old, with two older sisters.

In 1870, his mother has married a man named William DeBalt, and they are
recorded as a household in Cypress Bayou Township of Arkansas County, near
Arkansas Post. Note the unusual way in which the names of Caliste (Calista)
and Solomon are reported, as though the enumerator was confused about the
surname of these two, though he got Sarah Dumond's name right.

Calista Edward [sic] 11 M W Arkansas
Lewis Solomon [sic] 9 M W Arkansas
DeBalt Mary A 2 F W Arkansas

Caliste is listed here as 11 years old, but his known birthday is in January
1860. Thus he should be only 10 in July 1870.

I have not been able to find Edward Caliste and his family in the 1880 census.

By 1900, Edward and his family are up north in Cleburne County, Arkansas, in
Sugar Loaf Township.

The latter child McKinley was reported by his niece Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain
as Willie. This would make the twins Willie and Lillie. This probably
indicates that Willie's name was William. Since he is enumerated here as
McKinley, this makes me think his full name was William McKinley. And William
McKinley was the President of the United States at the time the twins were
born.

The name in this census for Lillie is a bit uncertain. The name is scrawled.
It is transcribed by Ancestry as Zula. And sure enough, the first letter
seems to have the script tail of a capital Z. It runs into the M of McKinley
on the line below, but does look like a Z, and the vowels following probably a
U.

Some genealogies list this child as Ziola, so they read the vowel(s) following
the Z as IO. There is no dot there, but it could have been IO. One
researcher interprets the name as Viola. Bertie tells us this child's full
name was Lillie Viola.

We learn from the family that Edward L is Edward Luther, who had a son also
named Edward Luther.

Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain recorded:
"Emma Cornelia Dumond lost her mother (___ Kinard) Mar. 4, 1902, daughter Mary
Mar 11, daughter Dollie Mar 12, and husband Mar 22, 1902 -- all within 18
days. All died of pneumonia."
-- Personal family information compiled February 27, 1979, for Orville and
Edith McSwain Jenkins.

Later research and other sources revealed that Emma Cornelia Dumond's mother
was Emma Cornelia Kinard.

Edward Caliste is buried in the Roach Cemetery, DeWitt, Arkansas. Updates I

Notes for Edward Luther DUMOND

Edward Luther went by his middle name Luther.
-- Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain, letters and oral communication

His son Edward L was also Edward Luther, and this was confirmed when I found a
genealogy with many names and a few details by Julie Dumond, granddaughter of
Edward Luther and Emma Purdy. The name on the son's grave has Edward Luther
Jr. Various other Dumond family sources also have told us his name was Edward
Luther. Some genealogies report them as Senior and Junior.

The family information indicates that Edward Luther's birthday is 22 December
1889. This also matches the 1900 census. But on his WWI Draft Registration
in 1918, Luther reported his birth date as 22 December 1890. On the WWII
Registration, it is again 1889, Both report the place of birth as Ethel,
Arkansas. His age is not reported on his marriage record.

Luther married in 1912. His wife is reported as Hassie Lee. Some records and
genealogies seem to indicate that Lee is the middle name, but the name on
their marriage record is only Hassie Lee, indicating this was her maiden name.

A genealogy by Julie Daniels reports Luther's wife as Hassie E Sermons. I
have seen no other genealogy or record that has a last name for her. The
middle initial E seems to come from the entry in the 1920 census, the only
listing of her name with an E initial. The only documented name is Hassie
Lee. But see the 1940 census below.

Roy is reported as Roy E, differing from Roy L in the 1930 census.

In the 1940 census an entry that appears to be for Edward Luther presents some
problems. The enumeration was in LaGrue Township, near DeWitt, where they
were living in 1920. This Luther seems to match her son Edward Luther Dumond,
and Edward Luther's mother is living next door. But the age is a little
different, and his wife is Emma Teal, instead of Hassie Lee. Teal step
children in the home confirm the previous married name of Emma.

But the death date I have for Hassie Lee is 1978. So from the information in
this 1940 census, it looks like Luther and Hassie divorced some time before
1934, about the time Esther Lottie was born to Luther and Emma Teal Dumond.
From the age of Lottie here, we can estimate that Luther married Emma Teal
about 1933.

In the 1940 census, Emma Miller is living alone next door to this Luther
Dumond. Her presence next door would seem to strengthen the possibility that
this is her son Edward Luther Dumond, son of Edward Caliste Dumond. But this
Luther's age is a little off, and the wife is Emma instead of Hassie.

Miller, Emma Wife F W 73 [b abt 1867] Grade 5 b Ark same place in 1935

I have seen no info about Hassie Lee in other sources, either, that would
indicate a previous marriage to a Teal, or that she and Luther divorced.
Hassie Lee lived until 1978. I have considered that there was another Luther
Dumond born in about 1886, as Luther's 1940 age would indicate. But I cannot
find a place to put this Luther Dumond with the information now available.
Help is welcomed from family members who can clarify this.

But his WWII Draft card in 1945 has the name of his contact person as Mrs.
Emma Dumond. This is usually the name of the registrant's wife if married.
This seems to indicate his wife's name was Emma, matching Emma Teal, the wife
reported in the 1940 census. So did Luther and Hassie divorce? And why can I
find no record?

documentation.

This genealogy has no information on Luther Dumond's family. It indicates
that George Teal, Emma's first husband, died in 1928. This indicates he died
while Emma was pregnant with their last child, Jimmie.

In 1929, Florence married Reece Lewis, later spelled Louis in other records.
It appears that Reece died soon afterwards, since Florence appears reported as
married but without a husband in the 1930 and 1940 censuses, and her daughter
was born soon after the 1930 census, reported as 10 years old in the 1940
census, though not reported yet in the 1930 census. We later learned he was
back in Weona, Poinsett County, working in the sawmill. His 1942 military
record reprots he was Separated, with Dependents. In the marriage record, the
recorder used the older French spelling for Florence's surname Dumont.

Florence Dumont
Residence De Witt, Arkansas
Spouse's Name Reece Lewis
Spouse's Gender Male
Spouse's Residence Weona [Poinsett County], Arkansas

We assume the marriage took place in DeWitt, the county seat where the license
was issued and where Florence and her family were living. Notre that Reece's
residecne is reported in Poinsett County, about 5 counties northeast of
Arkansas County, north of Memphis, Tennessee. He was boack there working in
the saw mill in Weona for the 1930 census enumeration.

Florence was reported still in her mother's home, but with the last name of
Louis (Lewis). Oddly, she is reported as Single, but then in 1940 she is
reported as married. No chaild is reported, but Marion is reported in 1940 as
10 years old. This should mean she was born in after the April 1 census date.
However, her Arkansas birth record says she was born 23 March 1930.

She is reported as Married but no husband is reported. Her two sisters
Pauline and Aline are in the home with her.

Debra Whiddon, in a genealogy of the Dumonds and Reeces, seems to reference
family information for some details, with no documentation provided. She
reports Marion as Marion Janet Rreece. Marion's Social Security record,
linked by Whiddon, reports her name as Marion J Whiddon.

Marion J. Whiddon
Born 23 Mar 1930

Whiddon identifies the following death record for Florence Lewis in Ellis
County, Texas, south of Dallas. Whiddon adds that the town was Waxahachie.
The date fits other details. There was no memorial in Find a Grave.

Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
Florence Lewis
Death 12 Jun 1996 Ellis County

Whiddon also provides a link to another marriage record for a Reece Lewis and
a Florence Lewis. It appears to be a reconsecration or a remarriage after a
divorce. The marriage is in Arknasas, but in Miller County, not in her home
county of Arkansas, where they were first married in 1929.

Florence's reported age her is about 2-3 years greater than earlier census
ages would suggest. Other details, though, match our Florence Dumond and
Reece Lewis. The residence in Dallas correlates with the death record above
for a Florence Lewis in Ellis County, Texas. At this stage (June 2015),
howeve, too many other details are missing to confirm that these are the right
individuals.

The Arkansas Death Index confirms the date of death as provided by Bertie Lois

birth place, but we know it was in Arkansas, and likely Arkansas County, like
most of the family. The Index provides only the year of birth, while Bertie
has provided the full date. Bertie tells us he died in the home at Ethel.

Notes for Isabella DUMOND

Brian Demoe lists this child in his genealogy of this family. But I do not
find her with her mother in the 1870 census. Brian estimates her birth as
about 1864, but does not give the source of this date. This would mean that
in 1870 she should have been 5-6 years old, but she is not in the census. If
she is truly Caliste and Sarah's daughter, then she must have died before
1870.

But her birth date is also a problem. Brian himself also reports the actual
death of her father Caliste as 29 April 1863. This means the latest period in
which Isabella could have been conceived was April 1863, meaning the latest
birth date was in January 1864.

I think it is possible Isabella is a daughter of another Dumond, rather than
Caliste and Sarah, but I have not found where she should go in the
Dumont/Dumond families. Otherwise, she died at the age of about 5 before the
1870 census.

Notes for Israel A DUMOND

Israel is reported in several different family genealogies of different
lineages that intersect with the Dumont line. In 1850, we find him for the
first time by name in the census. He is in the household of his widowed
mother Felicity/Félicité and an older brother Regis/Reges. His name is
misspelt here and in 1870, but we can tell what is meant.

1850 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 1 November, Chester Township,
page 71 (141), Hse/Fam #268
Felicita [Félicité] Dumond 42 F [No occupation listed] $1500 Real Estate
born Arkansas
Ragios [? maybe Ragies = Regis] Dumond 21 M born Arkansas
Isreal Dumond 19 M born Arkansas

In 1860, Israel is listed as A Dumond. He is living next door to his mother
Félicité (written in the census as Felicita). I was able to identify him
with the help of his entry in the Noonan-Howarth genealogy, which includes
this line of Dumonds
(http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=1008393&pid=-2016416830&ftm=1).
Patrick Noonan reports that Israel was married to Elizabeth Narcissa White in
1855. The wife of A Dumond in 1860 is Narcissa.

1860 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 2 August, Chester Township, PO
Redfork, page 13 (65), Hse/Fam #96
A Dumond 28 M Planter born Arkansas
Narcissa Dumond 25 F Housekeeper born Tennessee
Sarah Dumond 2 F born Arkansas
Louis Dumond 3 M born Arkansas

Israel Dumond's wife here is Elizabeth Narcissa White, married in 1855,
acording to Patrick Noonan. Several genealogies report that Israel Dumond had
two wives. Narcissa died sometime after the birth of Robert, born in 1860.
When she died, Israel married Sarah E Frazier 25 Sep 1865. But the 1870
census reports a third wife named Serina (Serena?).

1870 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 11 August, Chester Township, PO
Chester, page 5 (477), Hse/Fam #48
Du Mond, Isriel 38 M W Farmer born Arkansas father and mother of foreign
birth cannot read or write
Du Mond, Serina A 28 F W Keeping House born Tennessee can read, cannot write
Du Mond, Sarah R (P?) 12 F W born Arkansas cannot read or write
Du Mond, Robert F 10 M W born Arkansas cannot read or write
Du Mond, Nancy A 7 months F W born Arkansas Oct 1869
Allen, Charles 8 M W At Home born Arkansas [literacy not noted]
Allen, Edward 4 M W born Arkansas

In the 1870 census, the wife of Israel is Serina A, and there are two children
surnamed Allen in the household. This appears to be a widow and her two
children from the marriage to a man named Allen. The younger Allen child,
Edward, is 4, meaning he was born to Mr Allen and Serina in 1866, a year after
the reported marriage of Israel to Sarah Frazier.

This Serina seems, then to be a different person from the Sarah Frazier
reported as Israel's second wife. It appears that Sarah died before the 1870
census, with no children. No children appear which could be the children of
Sarah. Robert F is reported as age 10, so born in 1860-61, before Israel
married Sarah (1865). Louis, who was age 3 in 1860 (a son of Narcissa), does
not appear in 1870, and it appears that Robert is a different child. Louis
must have died before the 1870 census.

This census also reports a 7-month old Nancy A Dumond, and her month of birth
is given as October 1870. This would be the first child of Israel and Serina.
Thus they were married probably in 1869, possible January 1870. Note,
however, that 7 months old does not match October 1869! It should be 9 months
old or born in January 1870.

Israel is buried in the Nady Community (Tichenor, Arkansas, address), not far
from Arkansas Post. In Find a Grave the old burial spot is described thusly:

Notes for Jean-Baptiste DUMOND

There are few details about Jean-Baptiste. No marriage information is known.
It is unclear when he died. I have reported the date as after 19 Mar 1838.
Patrick Noonan in his Dumond genealogy reports this as the date of
Jean-Baptiste's death.

Ralph Dumond, posting on RootsWeb Dumont List, 1999, clarifies the meaning of
this date: "Jean Baptiste Dumond b 1810-1815 (first taxed for poll in 1837) d
after 19 Mar 1838 when he witnessed the will of Michael Petersel in Ark Co."

Yet there is a listing for a J Dumond in the Desha County Militia (Confederate
States of America) in 1861. The only Dumond we know that matches this is
Jean-Baptiste. There is also a listing for a C Dumond in that Militia, which
appears to be his brother Caliste.

Desha County Battalion Arkansas Militia
DUMOND, C.
DUMOND, J.
Enlistment as Nov 28, 1861
Laconia [Desha County], Arkansas
"A copy of a letter dated Laconia, (AR) Nov 28, 1861, attached to the roll is
addressed to Gov. H.M. Rector, Commander in Chief, Arkansas Militia, b T. C.
Fluornoy, Col. C.D.C.M. and it shows that the Court of Desha County, Ark in
accordance with an ordinance of the State Convention passed in June 1861,
organized the militia of the county according to the following plan: The
county was divided into military districts (believed to be 13) and a company
ordered to be organized in each district. This was done in July 1861 and all
the officers of the battalion were commissioned from the County Court. If the
emergency arises, which may require the services of the Desha County Battalion
to the field, a call will be promptly responded to."

Unfortunately, Noonan gives no source for his information. If this J Dumond
in the Desha Militia is our Jean-Baptiste, he may have died in the war, since
he is not listed among the heirs of Félicité Dumond in the settlement of her
estate after her death in 1862.

There is a burial in DeWitt Cemetery of one Robert Lee Davis, who fits the
pattern of Jennie's husband named in their marriage record as TR K Davis. His
birth on the gravestone is reported as 25 December 1900. The age reported on
the marriage record would make him born about 1902. This is a match as age
reports and estimates go. A wife is reported on the memorial for Robert Lee
Davis, which would fit for a second wife after Jennie's early death in 1932.
