Roy's middle initial here is E, whereas it is L in other sources. It also
appears that the enumerator switched the ages of Roy and his brother Edward.
Roy should be about 5 here, and Edward 6.

One genealogy has Roy's middle name as Lee, but most have only the initial L,
as do the censuses. Only in November 2012 did I find a source documentation
for this middle name. He is named as Roy Lee Dumond Sr in the obituary of his
second wife Agnes Niedzwiedz.

A marriage record reports that Roy married Martha Wright in 1936.

Most genealogies that report Roy L Dumond do not have his wife. One genealogy
of the Heinzelman family reports Roy L Dumond as the husband of Martha
Heinzelman. Could Martha Wright be her name from an earlier marriage before
she married Roy?

Martha C Heinzelman is reported with her parents in the 1920 and 1930 census
in the Barton Township of Arkansas County, while Roy and his family lived in
DeWitt, then in Stuttgart, in the same county. Barton is southwest of
Stuttgart, near Humphrey, and includes part of the Bayou Meto Game Reserve.
Martha's middle initial in the 1920 census is C, just as in the 1951 directory
listing below.

Notes for Solomon D Lewis DUMOND

I got the basic information on Solomon Dumond from his great-niece Bertie Lois
Dumond McSwain. All she had from family tradition was his name and nickname,
Sol.

In 1870 I found Solomon Lewis with his mother and stepfather and other Dumond
children in Cypress Bayou Township of Arkansas County, near Arkansas Post.
The surnames of Sol and his brother Caliste are not recorded correctly,
seeming to indicate that the enumerator was confused about the surname of
these two, though he got their sister Sarah Dumond's name right. Note that
half sister Mary DeBalt in the home.

Solomon remarried after his first wife died. He and widow Virginia (Jennie)
McCoy Watkins merged their two families together in 1900.

I did not find Sol and Jennie in the 1900 census until May 2014, when he
showed up in a new search for more info about his first wife Virginia (Jennie)

see the children from their previous marriages.

The birth dates for Walter and Curtis are confusing. They look like twins,
with the age of both reported as 3. But the years of birth are different, with
the same date of birth. Family sources and other records report Walter born
18 July 1894 and Curtis 28 Jan 1897. The enumerator has put Walter's birth
month for both, but changed the year and got Walter's year wrong. But, take
heart, this is not the worst mess I have seen in the 1900 cnsus. Birth dates
reported are often wrong, especially the year.

In 1910, he is listed under the name Sol L.

Note that no birth state is reported for Sol or his parents, but both parents
are reported as born in the USA. We know from other sources that they were
born in Arkansas, and Caliste in Arkansas County.

Since Sol and Jennie married in 1900, James O (Oliver) is the only child from
this marriage, born after 9 years of marriage.

Curtis' record here is strange, since the birthplace of parents appears to
match Sol and Jennie, but we are told they were not married but 10 years ago,
while Curtis is 13 years old. We know from other sources (such as the
L'Heureux genealogy below) that Walter is the son of Sol's first wife, Serena
(Serener) Elizabeth Young. Likewise, the enumerator was confused or
distracted when he recorded the information for Res (Reo?), showing him and
both his parents (Jennie and Mr Wadkins) as born in Arkansas. This child's
name appears to be Res, but Ancestry transcribes it as Reo.

On the same page, a few houses before Sol and Jennie, is another Wadkins, who
looks like a brother of Jennie's first husband. This is Sylvester Wadkins,
born in Mississippi, of parents born in Alabama. Jennie's Wadkins children's
father is reported as born in North Carolina. This would be possible,
especially if he was an older brother of Sylvester. With this initial
information in March 2008, I do not have enough information to confirm the
family ties of the Wadkins.

Note that the places of birth in Jennie's record have all changed now to
Arkansas. Sol's record now correctly shows Arkansas as the birthplace of
himself and both his parents. I find it interesting that in 1910 Anis was
listed as a foster child, but now is reported as a house servant.

The Heureux Genealogy, by Jacques Heureux has a lot of other good details,
including full names of the children from the first marriage of Solomon. This
list lacked dates of birth and other details.
-- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lheureux/lh1/d0033/g0000046.html#I116118

But this list enabled me to identify a Lewis J Dumond in the 1920 census, whom
I had been unable to connect to the other Dumonds. This would be the John
Lewis that Jacques Heureux reports. According to his age of 33 in the
February 1920 census, John Lewis would have been born in 1896.

Here is the information on Solomon Louis DUMOND and family from Jacques
Heureux:

BIRTH: 2 OCT 1861, Mena, Polk, AR
DEATH: 20 MAY 1938, Stuttgart, Arkansas, AR
Father: Caliste DUMOND
Mother: Sarah HAGA
Family 1: Serener Elizabeth YOUNG
MARRIAGE: 6 MAR 1886
Children:
John Lewis DUMOND
Minnie Ada DUMOND
Walter DUMOND
Curtis Edward DUMOND
Family 2: Jennie MCCOY
child: James Oliver DUMOND

This provides information on the first wife, which one or two other
genealogies with Solomon lack. I am puzzled by the birth in Mena, however,
which is on the border with Oklahoma. All other information I have on Caliste
and his family occurs in the east central area of the state, in Arkansas and
Desha Counties. It would be odd if he and Sarah went that far west, had a
child, then came back. He already had a land grant from 1850 in
Arkansas-Desha, and public records before and after place the family there.

I thought it might be related to Caliste's Civil War assignment. He was a
member of the Desha County Militia. Checking on the dates, I see that Caliste
did not enroll in the militia until 28 November 1861, just 6 weeks after Sol's
birth. So he was still in the Arkansas Post area. In the 1860 census he was
enumerated in the Swan Lake area of Arkansas County, in Old River Township.

While Jacques seems wrong about the place of birth, the exact date he provides
for the birth of Solomon Lewis would fit the other known information about
Solomon. The death date here also fits within a range reported by another
major Dumont researcher, Brian Demoe.

This compilation lacks the child Walter, but provides some additional details
I had not found on the children,

The above baptismal record is for the Roman Catholic diocese covering this
area, but it was an itinerant priest who came. New Gascony was in Jefferson
County, southwest of the Arkansas River, near Pine Bluff, while the Dumond
families lived near St Charles, on the White River in Arkansas County. Other
records indicate they were there once to twice a yar to confirm marriages,
baptize children and perform other rites.

St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, New Gascony, Arkansas
"Located on Morgan Road at the former town site of New Gascony in Jefferson
County [near Pine Bluff], is the two acre St. Peter's Cemetery site. The
foundation of a small c. 1855 parish church lies within the 1919 iron fence of
the cemetery which is located within a cotton field. Volunteers from St.
Joseph's parish in Pine Bluff have documented 53 burials dating from the first
recorded death date of 1827. Not all of the monuments are visible and some
are just jumbled segments of grave markers."

In the 1960 census Thérèse (Teresa) was reported as the youngest of two
children. Thérèse is spelled in a somewhat anglicized manner as Toresa
[Teresa]. The wife of her father Caliste here is her step mother, Sarah M
Haga.

Teresa married George Harris about 1873. Their first child, Mary Elizabeth

1880 census. No marriage record has been found. No record has been found for
them in the 1870 census.

The name of the oldest child at first looks like MargE. But then there is a

There is a puzzling memorial on Find a Grave for a child of Caliste Dumond,
whose wife is not linked or reported. The name on the memorial is Mary
Theresa Dumond, which combines the names of the two daughters we know about of
Caliste Dumond and Desirée Pinot. The names from baptismal and family
sources, reported on this page and elsewhere, are Mary Elizabeth Dumond and
Thérèse or Teresa Ann Dumond.

The memorial for Mary Theresa Dumond reports her birth date as 28 January
1882, and death date as 11 December 1902, with death in LaGrue. Burial is in
the Roach Family Cemetery, a family we do not know about in this genelaogy.
The birth date reported for our Thérèse Ann Dumond in the 1900 census (which
is often off by about a year) is August 1852, 30 years before this Mary
Theresa Dumond.

Notes for Thomas Eddie DUMOND

Thomas Eddie was called Ted from a very early age by his family. The name
derives from his initials, TED. Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain would tell us the
story that when Ted was a child he used to play checkers with himself. On one
side of the board he was Thomas Eddie. On the other side he was Ted. -- OBJ

Vergie's Obituary provides a lot of detail about her life and family. From
this I first learned her mother's maiden name, Pittman. Note also the
spelling of Vergie's name. I found it interesting that the obituary gives no
middle name for Vergie. I wonder if she did not have one.

-----------------------------------------------------
Vergie Dumond Denman McCollum

Vergie Dumond Denman McCollum, 86, died June 21, 2006.

She was born Dec. 27, 1919, in DeWitt to Curtis and Jacie Pittman Dumond. Her
husband, Maurice McCollum, and her former husband, Al Denman of Stuttgart,
preceded her in death.

When she was 15, she moved to Stuttgart with her family. She graduated from
Stuttgart High School the next year and remained a resident of the city until
her death. She was a businesswoman and farmer and attended Arkansas A&M
College in Monticello. During World War II, she worked as a bookkeeper for
Walt Disney Studios in California and helped in the war effort as a munitions
inspector for the Lone Star Ammunition Depot in Texarkana.

Following the war, she was a bookkeeper for Rice Belt Butane and Enterprise
Gas many years. She also owned and operated the Majestic Dress Shop.

She eventually retired to farm life full-time and spent her remaining years
traveling the world, visiting with family, and working with friends in the
community. She loved to read and, after macular degeneration took her sight,
she continued to read through the Arkansas Services for the Blind books on
tape program and often listened to six-eight books a week.

She was a life-long member of First United Methodist Church, the Mary John
Circle, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Yoder Home Demonstration
Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her daughter, Allison Denman Holland of Little Rock; two
granddaughters, Allison Brooks Fenner and her husband, Chad, and Anne Denman
Holland; and one great grandson, Elijah Dean Fenner, of Austin, TX. Close
family members are her sister, Mary Oliver, and her niece Karen Carnahan and
her husband, Charles, of Stuttgart; nieces Lynne Siems and her husband,
Curtis, and Brooks Holt and her husband, Dennis, of South Carolina; special
friends John and Judy Conrad, and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins,
and friends.

The funeral was held June 26 at First United Methodist Church in Stuttgart,
with burial at Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers,
donations in her memory may be made to Macular Degeneration research, First
United Methodist Church of Stuttgart, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

---------------
(Excerpt from a news article in an Orlando, Flrida, newspaper about Wayne
Dumond and Forrest City, Arkansas)

In 1976, he was arrested and charged with rape in his hometown of DeWitt, Ark.
Charges were dropped when the woman involved refused to testify.

After his arrest in DeWitt, Dumond's marriage dissolved. He took two of his
three sons and moved to Forrest City, a place where he knew no one, and no one
knew him.

One of the first people Dumond met in Forrest City was an older woman, a widow
named Mary Lou Wolf. She calls herself Dusty. Dusty Wolf introduced herself
one day with a knock on Dumond's door.

"I brought him a kettle of stew and a chocolate pie with whipped cream," she
said, "and I invited him to church."

They met in February and married in May. She worked at the Forrest City Sanyo
plant, making television sets. He worked at the Holiday Inn as a maintenance
man and later as an automobile mechanic. They moved to a house out in the
country.

"We were just going to live in the woods, mind our own business and go to
church," she said.
Eighteen months later, Forrest City police came to the Dumonds' home and
arrested Dumond and charged him with the rape of the daughter of a prominent
Forrest City businessman. Dumond contends that he was home sick when the rape
occurred.

"Wayne DuMond was born on September 10, 1949, in DeWitt (Arkansas County), one
of two sons of Ira Eugene DuMond and Ethel Christine DuMond. His father, an
automobile mechanic, also had two sons and a daughter by another wife. DuMond
was a soldier in the Vietnam War and worked as a handyman and carpenter in
communities around DeWitt and Forrest City and in Texas. He was married three
times: to Lywanda Jean Strain at DeWitt in 1968, to Mary Lou “Dusty” Davis
at Ethel (Arkansas County) in 1983, and a woman identified in sources only as
“Terry Sue” at Smithville, Missouri, in 2000 after his parole from
Arkansas. He had three sons with his first wife; the marriage had apparently
ended by 1983."
-- "Wayne Eugene DuMond (1949-2005)," The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History
and Culture,

While he was married to Dusty, Wayne was convicted of a rape murder of a local
cheerleader in Forrest City, Arkansas, in 1984. She divorced him in 1986, but
remained loyal to him, continuing to maintain his innocence until her death in
1999.

The Orlando Sentinel article tells us that Mary Lou (Dusty) moved to Houston,
Texas.

"After Dumond's conviction, his wife moved to Houston to live near the oldest
of her four children. She rarely tells anyone in Texas about her life. "When
you tell people your husband is in prison for life for something he didn't do,
not many people believe you," she said."

There she got a divorce from Wayne. The Arkansas marriage and divorce records
for Wayne and Dusty report they married on 8 May 1983 and divorced on 24 June
1986.

"His second wife, Dusty, staunchly supported him throughout his imprisonment
in Arkansas, but died in a car crash January 8, 1999, after the approval of
his parole but prior to the approval of his release plan."

After Wayne's release on a parole agreement in October 1999, he moved from
Missouri in August 2000 and married a woman named Terry Sue Wood.

"Following his 1999 parole, DuMond moved to Smithville, Missouri in August
2000, where he married Terry Sue, a member of a church group who visited him
while he was incarcerated in Arkansas. On June 22, 2001, DuMond was arrested
and charged with the September 20, 2000, rape and murder of Carol Sue Shields
of Parkville. DuMond was convicted in the summer of 2003."

-------------------
DuMond's case became notorious in Arkansas when he claimed he was castrated
while awaiting trial for a 1984 rape at Forrest City, Ark. No one was ever
charged in the assault. Stephens is a distant relative of former President
Bill Clinton, who was governor of Arkansas at the time of the rape.

DuMond moved to Missouri after being paroled from Arkansas and shortly
afterward was arrested for the Sept. 20, 2000, murder of Carol Sue Shields of
Parkville. He was convicted and sentenced to life without parole.

Prosecutor Dan White in Clay County, Mo., said the Appeals Court for the
Western District of Missouri upheld Dumond's appeal Tuesday of his
first-degree murder conviction.

White said Dumond was also the lead suspect in a murder in Platt County, Mo.,
but had never been charged in that case. [Another story iindicats that
charges had been prepared and were abotu to be filed when DuMond's death
occurred.]

After his conviction in Missouri, Wayne died in prison in of apparent natural
causes, suffering from recently diagnosed vocal chord cancer, but the day
after the Missouri Court of Appeals upheld his Missouri murder conviction.

-------------------
DuMond moved to Smithville, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City, in August 2000
and married a woman named Terry Sue, who had been in a church group that had
traveled to the Arkansas prison to visit him. Only days later, on September
20, Carol Sue Shields, thirty-nine, of nearby Parkville was raped and
murdered. The next June, Sarah Andrasek, twenty-three, who was pregnant, was
raped and murdered.

On June 22, 2001, DuMond was arrested and charged with Shields’s murder and
was convicted in the summer of 2003. Charges were being prepared for
Andrasek’s murder in the fall of 2005, but DuMond was found dead in his cell
at the Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron, Missouri, on September 1
[but see news story below; he was found on 31 August], a day after the
Missouri Court of Appeals unanimously upheld his conviction in Shields’s
murder.

While his death occurred immediately following the bad news of his appeal;, he
was also suffering from cancer of the vocal chorde.

-------------------
Missouri prison officials said DuMond had been diagnosed two months ago with
cancer of the vocal cords and that his death appears to have been natural.

DuMond was pronounced dead at 7:03 a.m. by medical staff of a prison infirmary
at Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron, Mo., said Wanda Seeney, a
spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Corrections. Prison guards found
DuMond unresponsive during a routine inmate count earlier that morning and
tried to revive him before taking him to the infirmary, she said.

Two months ago, DuMond was diagnosed with cancer of the vocal chords, she
said. "He was being treated for cancer, but it was still a shock because his
cancer had not progressed to where they were expecting him to die at any
moment," she said.

Wayne's funeral was held in his home community, at Belleview Missionary
Baptist Church, Ethel, Arkansas, Arkansas. Funeral and burial were prepared
by Essex Funeral Home, DeWitt, Arkansas, on 2 September, two days after his
death was discovered. George Oliver McSwain provided some information about
Wayne from personal knowledge of his cousin. See documentation notes on
facts.

A copy of Wayne's obituary from the newspaper was provided by a family member.
The clipping does not indicate which newspaper it was printed in, but it
appears to be the DeWitt Era-Enterprise. I got the name of other family
members and children from the obituary. With these names I was able to find
further information on some family members, which appears on their profiles,
from public records in Arkansas and Missouri.
