The 1930 census reports that Laura and her sister were born in North Carolina,
consistent with the birth certificate. But her obituary reports that she was
born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where her brother Odell was born after
they moved down there. Family memory lost the original birth place. The same
thing happened with Pansy on her obituary.

The 1920 and 1930 census reports that Pansy and her sister were born in North
Carolina. But her obituary reports that she was born in Spartanburg, South
Carolina, even stating the orignial town of Fingerville.

Pansy's sister Laura's obit also reported that Laura was born in Spartanburg,
but her North Carolina Delayed birth certificate indicates Laura was born in
Polk County, North Carolina. Probably Pansy was too. It appers their brother
Odell was born in Spartanburg County after they moved down there. However, in
the 1920 census, Odell was also reported as born in North Carolina. Family
memory may have remembered the place of residence where they moved as the
birth place of Pansy.

One nudge in that direction is perhaps the 1940 census, which reports everyone
in the household, including Lizzie, as born in South Carolina.

In 1910, the census reported that Elizabeth and William Edwards with their son
James T. Her parents wree enumerated in the same townshp, on page 7B. This
census reports that Lizzie had lost one child before this census. James does
not appear in the 1920 census. It appears he died in that period of time. No
death record has been found for James or the previous child.

She went by her middle name, which is the primary name on her grave and most
records. Maude is descendaed form a German family named Eichenlaub, which
interprets into English as Oakleaf. This form and meaning derive from a folk
etymology reinterpretation of the original Middle High German name Eichenlau,
a form of Eichenloch, meaning Oak Undergrowth. Maude married Robert Gergory
of Saline County, Arkansas.

Notes for Rube ELLENBERG

After the death of her husband Roe Dempsey in 1937, Josie Benson Dempsey
married Rube Ellenberg in 1938. Rube is a nickname for Reuben. In the 1930
census his name is entered as Rubin.

In the 1940 census, Josie and Rube are reported in Crockett Township of
Arkansas County, with her daughter Rosella, age 6, Josie's two Dempsey sons,
and a cousin named Robert Weathers. Rosella is reported as the daughter of
Rube Ellenberg. But note that she is 6 years old, and her mother married Rube
only in 1938. Rosella was born about 1934, 4 years before Josie married Rube,
and 3 years before Roe Dempsey died. So it appears she should have been
reported as a step daughter.

Josie's two sons Thelma and Elvis are reported as stepsons, with the correct
surname of Dempsey. But Thelma is reported as a girl, though in all other
records, he is reported as a boy. And Elvis is reported as Ellis.

Notes for Eliza Ann ELLIOTT

Note that Eliza's death certificate reported her birth date as 22 Oct 1867, but
in the 1870 census she was reported as 1 year old, which would mean she was
born in October 1868, not 1867. Or alternatively, her parents reproted her age
wrong and she was actually 2 years old in August 1870 (almost 3).
