The Farrar Family Genealogy has a good generational history of the Farrar (Ferrier) family going back to William the Conqueror. The first excerpt here introduces the origins and the line leading to the Thomas Farrar included in this genealogy. ================================= From the beginning, the Farrar family name has had many variations: Ferris, Ferrer, Farrer, Ferrier, Farris, Farrar, and Faries. All these families claim to be from the same family, and therefore must be variations of the same name. All are descended from the deFerriers who came to England with William Conqueror in 1066, and then from the Ferris family of Leicestershire, England, descended from Henri deFerriers, son of Gwalchalme deFerriers, who was Master of Horse to the Duke of Normandy. His name is found "upon the Battle Abbey Roll". We do know that there was a Henry Ferriers who came with William the Conqueror to England from a town named Ferriers or Ferrieres in France. His descendants continue to possess the estate of Baddlesley Clinton, Warwickshire, England. The Ferriers were a distinguished family in England and France. The surname is originally Norman and means "one who works in iron", which could have been in any country. This line begins with Henrie Farrar, Sr. He was born abt 1480 in Ewood, Halifax Parish, England, and died Nov. 6, 1549 in Yorkshire, England. He married Agnes Barcroft Horsefalls in 1513 in Halifax, England. She was born abt 1480 in Stothlay, Yorkshire, England, and died Nov. 26, 1549 in Yorkshire. -- http://www.angelfire.com/al2/bcampbell/farrar.html ================================= I include here an excerpt that provides information about Thomas and his father. This source explains that the Farrar family first settled in Farrar's Island (actually a peninsula within a hairpin bend of the James River) in what was then Henrico County, now Chesterfield County, south of Richmond. ================================= William Farrar II (son of William, gson of John Jr) was born 1626 at Farrar's Island, Henrico Co., VA, and died Feb. 1, 1678 in Charles City, VA. He married Mary Piggot Baugh abt 1653 VA. She was born abt 1627 VA, and died 1676 VA. This William Farrar was known as Colonel William Farrar. He served Henrico County, VA, as justice and as burgess. He and Mary had 6 children: (1) William III, b. 1656 Farrar's Island, VA, d. April 3, 1721 Farrar's Island (2) Martha, b. 1664 Farrar's Island, married Walter Shipley (3) Thomas, b. 1665 Farrar's Island, d. 1742, St. James Northan [Northam], VA married first to Mary Ligon and then to Katherine Perrin in 1686 (4) John, b. abt 1670 VA, d. bef 1729 Farrar's Island, married Temprance Brown (5) Cecily, b. abt 1672 Farrar's Island; AND (6) Martha, b. abt 1672, VA -- http://www.angelfire.com/al2/bcampbell/farrar.html ================================= Note that this source gives Thomas' birth year as 1655. Another Source reports the year as 1662. Years of birth were in many cases not recorded or variously reported in contemporary and later sources. ================================= Farrar, Thomas Birth 1662 Farrar's Island, VA Death 1742 Goochland Co, VA Father Farrar, William Col., Mother Piggot, Mary Marriage 2 OCT 1686 Spouse Perrin, Katherine Birth 1667, Death UNKNOWN Father Perrin, Richard, Mother Royall, Katherine -- Reaves, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tracks/reaves/dat10.htm#199 =================================

But in Volney's memorial on Find a Grave, it is reported that he married Lucy Farrington in 1841. His wife is reported as Lucy in the Minnesota census of 1865. Lucy's grave reports she died in 1873. However, in the 1870 census, Volney's wife is named Nancy, and she is his same age, born about 1825, close to Lucy/Laura's ages in other censuses. Another odd thing is that they are in Missouri. But In the 1875 state census, they are back in Minnesota, and Volney has no wife. That would match the reported death of Lucy/Laura in 1873 for him to be a widower in 1875. The simplest explanation for this report of a wife named Nancy is that this was another name of Laura, who used the nickname Lucy most of the time. Benjamin in genealogies matches the child named Monroe in the 1880 census, aged 1, and thus born about 1879. I have not seen sufficient clues to determine the order of his names, Benjamin Monroe or Monroe Benjamin. Since he is enumerated as Monroe at age 1, I am assuming this is the first name. Also this census clearly confirms that the birth state was Tennessee, not Missouri as some genealogies reprot. 1880 Federal Census, Hamilton County, Tennessee, 25 June, Second District, Enumeration District 45, page 33 (scan 17), Hse #296, Fam #314 Farris, John W M 21 Farmer Cannot read or write TN TN TN [born abt 1859] Farris, Nancy W F 20 Wife Keeping House Cannot write TN TN TN [born abt 1860] Farris, Monroe W M 1 Son TN TN TN [born abt 1879]

John Fastolfe built what became the famous Caistor Castle in County Norfolk, England. It was originally the manor house of his family's estate. In this manor house he was born, and he developed it into a formidable castle. ======================================= Caister Castle Itâs a ruin now, but once Caister Castle was among the most desirable addresses in Norfolk. Back in 1469, 3,000 men wanted to live there at once. Location, location... The site north of what is now Yarmouth occupied a strategic site near the Norfolk coast. The Romans recognised its importance by building a third century fort on their embattled âSaxon Shoreâ. The name âCaistorâ comes from the Latin âcastraâ - fort. Long after the Romans had gone home, a family of landowners settled west of the village of Caister. In 1378 John Fastolf was born in the manor house that would later become the castle, and the centre of an extraordinary row over his will. Fastolf, supposed by some to be the inspiration behind Shakespeareâs legendary Falstaff character, was a distinguished soldier. He made a fortune fighting in France at Agincourt and later. After returning from the wars he divided his time between his property in London and Norfolk. As he aged though, his thoughts turned to the welfare of his immortal soul. -- A Place in History, http://www.edp24.co.uk/content/edp24/norfolk-life/PlaceinHistory/content/20CaisterCastle.aspx ======================================= I have found that genealogies tend to report that John was born in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, England, while public scholarly sources, such as that source above, report he was born on the family's estate in Norfolk. I have not been able to account for this discrepancy. Sources report John's death variously as 5 and 7 November 1459. It appears that he died on 54 November and was buried on 7 November. Some genealogies report his death place as his burial site, St Benet (Abbey Church Cemetery). He died in his Castle Caistor.
