Notes for Gottlieb Theophil FISCHER

The following birth place, from his emigration record in Wurttemberg (Germany),
seems to be for our Gottlieb Fischer. There were many of this name. So other
genealogies may give the birth information for other individuals of the same
name from other parts of Wurttemberg, and I may also have settled on the wrong
one. The date of emigration here for the US matches their first presence in
Texas and the birth of Gottlieb's first child in 1852, according to the 1860
census of the family near Fredericksburg, Texas.

Boatloads, literally, of immigrants from German states were pouring into Texas
at this time. Whole shipfulls were contracted by agents for the specific
purpose of settling Texas. The Hill Country of Texas where Fredericksburg is
located became a German area, and other areas of Texas became German
settlements also. Northeast Texas along the Red River is another big German
settlement area. German was spoken and continued to be spoken and taught in
the schools until the current generation. Oktoberfest is a today big
celebration in Texas Metro areas as wel as the heavily German sections of
Texas.

Fischer, Gottlieb
Birth Place Friolzheim, Leonberg District
Application Date Jul 1851
Destination North America

Soon after they arrived to their destination near Fredericksburg, Texas, their
first son Rudolph was born. In the 1860 census, he is reported as 8 years
old.

In about 1852, Comanches took Gottlieb and Sophie's son Rudolph as he walked
along in the woods away from the house. He stayed with them until about 1877,
when he was released. But he went back to live with the Comanches. He and
his family are registered in Comanche censuses. Thus in the 1870 enumeration
of the Fischer family, the oldest child Rudolph is missing.

In 1917, Mary is living next to her parents, but it appears her husband has
died. She is alone with her two children. They are still living in
traditional fashion in their family group. They have been joined by Bertie's
husband, Len Parker, one of Quanah Parker's sons. The gfirst child, named
Augusta, is described with conflicting designations, a Son, but Female. This
seems to be resolved in the 1920 census below.

In the 1917 census, Mary's child Augusta Bosin Jr was reported as a Son but
Female. The female form of the name made it appear that this was a daughter.
In the 1920 census, conflicting designations are resolved to identify the
child as a Male, even though the name is Augusta. Mary's white husband is not
included in this family list. But another daughter has been born since the
1917 census.

Notes for Rudolph Asewaynah FISCHER

Rudolph Fischer's parents immigrated from the Prussian Empire in July 1851 to
settle Fredericksburg, in Gillespie County, Texas. Rudolph was born soon
afterwards and in the 1860 census, he is reported to be 8 years old, thus born
about 1852.

Rudolph was stolen by the Indians while he was walking alone away for the
home, around 1862. He was raised from then as a Comanche. He was released in
1877, but after a visit home he decided to stay with the Comanches, and
married a Comanche woman.

I'm researching the Daniel Line this week I found out that James & Eliza
Daniel's daughter Elizabeth married a man name Ezekiel Fuller and their son
Frank H. Fuller married Sophie Fischer who is Rudolph Fischer and Tes-at-shona
daughter. Do you know if Rudolph and his wife are related to Quanah Parker...?
Thanks,
Cathie Daniel

Cathie, two of Rudolph Fischer's daughters by Kahchacha (Bertie and Helen)
married two of Quanah Parker's sons (Len and Thomas). Everything that I was
able to learn about Fischer I incorporated into my book "The Captured."

-------------------------

Rudolph appears in the 1900 census in Oklahoma Territory, on the Kiowa,
Comanche and Apache Reservation with two Comanche wives. He himself is
reported as a Comanche Indian with two white parents.

There are not enough children reported here of ages and names to match the
children of the two wives reported in genealogies. The first wife, married to
Rudolph for 21 years, is here named Tis set see or similar, whereas family
sources report her as Tissey Chau er.

At least one genealogy, however, reports these as two separate wives. This
seems to be correct, since the ages are different: Tis set sie b May 1862, cf
Dussit-sie-wee in 1910 age 45 b abt 1865). Tisseychauer is so reported in the
1905 Indian Rolls, where the names have been typed out and are readable.

But in the 1910 census the only wife reported is Dussit Sie Wee. The
handwriting in this 1900 census is about the worst I have ever found in the
censuses, and they can be pretty bad. The names have been transcribed various
ways, few of which match names given in genealogies. Most genealogies,
further, fail to give documentation, or provide documentation that does not
match the names they report.

The second wife's name here is unreadable, and Ancestry interprets it as
Awanata. She is always reported as Ka cha cha in genealogies, and named so by
writer Scott Zesch, who has interviewed most members of the family and others,
and written a definitive book on Rudolph and his family.

In the 1917 census, Mary's child Augusta Bosin Jr was reported as a Son but
Female. With the female form of the name, it appeared that this was a
daughter. The conflicting designations made it uncertain which of those
designations was correct. In the 1920 census, the two dsignations are
consistent to identify the child as a Male, even though the name is Augusta.
Mary's white husband is not included in this family list. But we see another
child has been born since the 1917 census.

Notes for Dorcas FISHBACK

There are uncertainties about Dorcas and her husband, presented by several
poorly-documented genealogies as Richard Gregory. Two versions of
transcriptions of a marriage seem to refer to them, but the variations of
Richard's last name may indicate that this was a different family lineage from
the Gregory lineages of Virginia, North Carlina and neighboring states, many
of whom appear to be kin, but connections have not been confirmed.

The name Gregory is derived from an ancient Greek name, which means Swift or
Adept, the name Gregory is associated with ethnic variations like McGregor,
MacGregory, and spelled as Grigory and other variations, in various records or
informal references, so there is nothing definitive about the name variations
in the marriage records below. Insufficient information is included to
clearly document identities.

One old publication has some partial information that notes the compiler (or
informant) says they think Dorcas had two children. the genealogies usually
have four names, which have been somewhat documented. We have been able to
well-document a son Philip, but clear documentation of his parentage is weak.
Some details have been found on others, but it is uncertain this is the same
family indicated, and clear parental relationship has not been established.

Steve Squier did an analysis of the early censuses on the family of Richard
Gregory.

--------------------
Censuses of 1810, 1830, and 1840 for Richard's household (the 1820 census of
Tennessee being lost). Here is how I propose to account for the tally-marks in
each of those years:

1810 Fauquier Co., VA
male 26-44 = Richard Gregory
female 26-44 = Lucretia Jones
female <10 = Sarah Ann Gregory (b. ~1807 VA)
male <10 = an unidentified son (b. 1801-1810) [appears to be William, based on
later discoveries by Steve]
female <45 = an elderly relative
female <45 = an elderly relative

1830 Jefferson Co., TN
male 40-49 = Richard Gregory
female 40-49 = Dorcas Fishback
[note that Sarah Ann is out of the household, having been married the previous
February]
male 20-29 = unidentified son (b. 1801-1810) [William]
male 15-19 = Few H. Gregory (b. ~1813 VA)
male 10-14 = Phillip Gregory (b. ~1817 VA)
female 10-14 = Lucretia Gregory (b. ~1819 TN)
female 5-9 = Mary Jane Gregory (b. ~1820 TN)
female 5-9 = Susan Gregory (b. ~1821 TN)
male 5-9 = James Henry Gregory (b. Apr 1826 TN)
male 60-69 = an elderly relative
female 60-69 = an elderly relative

1840 Jefferson Co., TN
male 50-59 = Richard Gregory
female 50-59 = Dorcas Fishback
[the unidentified son and Few are now out of the household, Few having been
married in 1834]
male 20-29 = Phillip Gregory (b. ~1817 VA)
female 20-29 = Lucretia Gregory (b. ~1819 TN)
female 20-29 = Mary Jane Gregory (b. ~1820 TN)
female 15-19 = Susan Gregory (b. ~1821 TN)
male 15-19 = James Henry Gregory (b. Apr 1826 TN)

Notes for Bernice Rosella FISHER

A niece of Bernice, Susanne Christian Uno, tells me that Bernice had an Irish
ancestor, who had been kidnapped as a boy and raised by the Indians. Family
information indicates that Bernice is from a Comanche and Caddo background. I
remember Bernice used to sign their Christmas cards "Harvey, Bernice and the
tribe."

Bernice's name is reported as Farris in her son Vernon's obituary. There is a
Nevada marriage record that seems to match her, giving the bride's name as
christian (see below). I have not found any information on a divorce from
Harvey.

"Vernon was born June 16, 1945 in the Lawton, Oklahoma Indian Hospital to
Bernice Farris [should be Fisher] and Harvey Christian."
-- Obituary of Vernon Garth Christian, Havenbrook Funeral Home (Norman,
Oklahoma) Online, March 2007

But a researcher for the Fisher-Christian families tells me her maiden name
was Fisher. She included information that matches Susanne Uno's on Bernice,
but fills in more detail. Records and family information I have found
confirms the Fisher surname, going back to Rudolph Fischer, a German immigrant
to Texas who was captured by the Comanches, and chose to remain a Comanche..

"I found your family info on Grover Cleveland Christian/Sallie Hester Jenkins;
you show their son Harvey Leon Christian married Bernice Farris (I believe
this should be Bernice Fisher). The Bernice Fisher I am researching is the
daughter of Henry Asewaynah Fisher and Agnes Sturm. Henry Asewaynah Fisher is
the son of Rudolph Fisher (Fischer) and a Comanche woman. This Rudolph Fisher
was captured by the Comanches at about age 10 or 12 near Fredericksburg TX;
his family were German. Rudolph Fisher was given the name "Grey Blanket" by
the Comanches and chose to remain with the Comanches when they were moved from
the Brazos Reservation in TX north to Indian Territory in 1859. He chose
never to return to his natural family in TX, only a short visit to settle
family affairs...Regards, Bee Gossett."
-- Email from Bee Gossett to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 December 2009

I found another genealogy also reporting the Fisher family of Bernice. Both
reported her correctly as married to Harvey Leon Christian, with the correct
information to match my cousin Harvey.

Only basic information was provided in the genealogies:

One genealogy reports her place of birth as Caddo, in Caddo County, Oklahoma,
not Anadarko in the same county. However, the family was living in Comanche
County at the time of her birth. Bernice's Social Security record, however,
reports her birthplace as Apache in Comanche County, Oklahoma, matching the
1920 census reprot of her as a 2-month-old infant in her father's household in
Chandler township of Comanche County.

Bernice was enumerated in the 1920, 1930 and 1937 Indian Census Rolls. In
1920 and 1930 her father is reported as 1/2 Comanche. Her mother is not
reported in 1920 or 1937, which normally indicates she was white. But in 1930
she was reported as Wichita. In 1930 percentages of blood are reported as 1/4
for all. Since the parents are of different Nations, this must mean
percentage of Native Nation of any kind, which seems odd.

In the 1920 Comanche rolls, Henry's wife Agnes is not listed with Henry and
the children. This is probably because she is a Wichita. Henry is listed
under his Comanche name, Asewaynah, but his daughters surname is reported as
the English translation Fisher.

organized the first school at the Old Wichita Indian Agency Commissary. After
much bribing, only eight students wearing traditional clothing, moccasins and

"Chilocco Indian School was an agricultural school for Native Americans
located in north-central Oklahoma from 1884 to 1980. It was located
approximately 20 miles north of Ponca City, Oklahoma and seven miles north of

derived from a Muscogee word meaning "big deer" or horse."

In about 1938, Bernice married Harvey Christian. Their first child was born
about 1939. But in the 1940 census, there is a listing for what appears to be
this same Bernice reported as single and working in the Morgan household in
Delaware County, Oklahoma. It was deteremined in 2019 that this is a record
for a different individual. A record was found only in 2019 for Bernice and
her husband Harvey Christian in the 1940 census in Whittier, California.

Bernice Rosella Fisher and Harvey Leon Christian ... divorced and both
remarried, producing no new offspring. Only the youngest two daughters are
living, both in Norman.

1. Grover Cleveland Christian (1940-2012) married Martha Joyce Hodge (b.
1940), producing three children: Scott (b. 1961), Steven (b.1962) and Jeffrey
(born circa 1966 and died circa 1994)

2. Patrician Ann Christian-Young-Keesee (1941-2005) married Richard Lee Young
(I don't remember him) producing three living children: Richard, Jr. (b. April
14, 1965), Edward (born circa 1966), and Gaylon (born 1970).

3. Richard Donald Christian (1943-2015) married Pearl Gould (b. 1942). He has
four living offspring, I think all of whom are from Pearl. I've met them all,
but did not grow up with them, so haven't mastered the dates. They are
Richard Christian, Jr., Nadine Christian, Julene Christian-Todd, and Shelley
Christian-Chamberlain.

4. Vernon Garth Christian (1945-2007) married Donna Pigorsch (will have to
track down dates and maiden name. Pigorsch was previous marriage, I believe).
Aunt Donna had two older children (Ronnie and Christina), who were raised by
Uncle Vernon but not his offspring. Together, Uncle Vernon and Aunt Donna
produced two living children together: Vernon Garth Christian, Jr. (b. 1972)
and Brenda Ranelle Christian-Hogue-Mitchell (born circa 1979).

5. Mary Sue Christian (b. 1948) married Larry Varner (b. 1946) producing two
living children: Larry, Jr. (b. 1970) and Jan Varner - Serrate (b. 1971)

6. Sally Sue Christian-McDonald-Morris (b. February 16, 1953) married Robert
Lynn McDonald (b. December 14, 1940), producing two children together: Robert

Notes for Geniece FISHER

Both the name Fisher and the name Asewaynah come form Geniece's grandfather,
Rudolph Fischer, a German immigrant's child who was captured by Comanches as a
child and raised as a Comanche. He decided to remain with the tribe and
culture, and was given the name Asewaynah by the Comanches, according to a
family tradition prominently discussed on genealogy sites. and in genealogies.
Asewayna means Gray Blanket, according to these sources.

In 1914, Henry has moved out next door. He is enumerated as a separate
household, but there is no wife, just him. He is now listed between Rudolph
and Bertie's household.

In 1917, the Fisher family list has grown with the addition of Len Ne hi o
Parker, one of Quanah Parker's sons, who has married Bertie A se way nah
Fisher. In these censuses Henry's wife does not appear, probably because she
is Caddo, not Comanche. The 1930 census reports Agnes' father was a Caddo,
and her mother of Mixed Blood. However, in the Comanche census of 1930, she
is reported as Wichita. So perhaps her mother was Mixed Blood Wichita. I dio
not have Agnes' parents information.

In the 1920 Comanche rolls, Henry's wife Agnes is not listed with Henry and
the children. This is probably because she is a Wichita. Henry is listed
under his Comanche name, Asewaynah, from his father's name given by the
Comanches, meaning Gray Blanket. But his daughters are reported under the
English name from Henry's father, Fisher, originally the German Fischer.
Later children were listed under the Comanche surname. In the US Federal
censuses, the English name is always used.

There was a great discrepancy about who should be listed and who was listed in
the various Indian tribal rolls. A good summary of factors in provided by the
University of Indiana on this topic. Following is an excerpt on some notable
people who were included or excluded in the Comanche rolls.

--------------------
The Comanche Census Lists

The earliest extant name-based Comanche censuses are from July 1876, recording
the Penateka local bands of Tosawa and Asehabit, residents of the Wichita
Reservation north of the Washita River at modern Anadarko. The lists are by
head of extended family under the two chiefs, and show a total of 166 people
in twenty-four families.

The earliest extant name-based list for the rest of the Comanches is from
1879. It is ordered by the heads of nuclear households. ...

It listed 1,427 people under 602 heads of families under 41 "chiefs". But
although the Kiowa and Wichita Agencies were consolidated in 1879, it did not
include the Penatekas at the Wichita Agency. They were not included in the
Comanche totals until 1885. There are similar lists for 1880, 1881, and 1883.

The earliest name by name is list from 1885, but it is problematic. There are
only some 912 names are on it, and several whole bands were excluded. There
are more comprehensive name-by-name censuses for 1889, 1892, and 1895--the
last year the censuses were listed by "bands" under "chiefs" -- and annually
for the years thereafter through 1939. After 1929, the lists are alphabetical
by the surname of the head of the family, although spouses continued to be
listed with their own surname.

Even as listings of individuals, there are pitfalls in using the lists. First,
there is the simple problem of misnumbering; the handwritten 1895 list has a
total of 1507, a figure also used in the "Recapitulation" at the end. But the
list omitted the numbers 1330-1339, so the total is really 1497.

Then there is the problem of exactly who is counted. From 1879, a number of
non-Comanches were listed. These range from various other Indians, both
captives and spouses, to non-Indian captives who remained with the Comanches
after capture: Asewaynah was the Texas-German Rudolph Fisher; Waysee, the
"oldest Comanche" when he died, was also non-Indian, although his origin is
unknown. After the so-called Jerome Allotment Agreement of 1892, a number of
other non-Comanches were listed. Some were captives who came back in hopes of
getting an allotment; Herman Lehman got on the rolls in 1904, but Bianca Babb
was rejected. There were "squaw men," non-Indians who had married Comanches;
George Chandler was married to a non-Comanche captive woman. There were
hangers-on such as the old interpreter Horace P Jones, and Quanah Parker's
handyman, David Grantham.

Finally, there is the question of fraud. It is sometimes claimed that people
placed dogs in cradleboards to get extra rations or allotments (Jackson
1979:112). While this cannot be ruled out, comparison of the original
allotment lists, both the allotment list and the original allotment maps with
census lists from both before and after allotment, shows near 100 percent
alignment over the next decades: there were no allotments attributed to
otherwise unknown individuals. While there are cases of new-borns being listed
as "no name" on censuses, in most cases they can be linked to later-named
children.

In 1937 Henry is reported as married but his wife is not listed on this
census, which would normally indicate she was not an Indian. But in 1930 she
was included, reported as a Wichita.

The 1930 census reports all children 1/4 blood, the same as both parents, even
though one parent is Comanche and one is Wichita. The percentage of Comanche
(or any Native?) blood has changed, 1/4 in 1930 and 1/2 in 1937. Note that
Henry is reported as 1/2 Indian, matching the family history report that his
father was a German captured as a child by the Comanches. But then all his
children are also reported as 1/2. If his wife was Comanche, they would be
3/4. The match works in 1930 if by "degree of blood," they mean 1/4 of any
Native Nation.

If his wife was white, they would be 1/4. But if his wife was half white and
half Comanche, then the children could be 1/2 Comanche. But, then, if she was
half Comanche, she should also be listed here. Agnes was listed in the 1930
census, why not here? But we saw above that the 1930 census reports that
Agnes Sturm was a Wichita Indian. But she is repoted as 1/4 blood.

Analyzing the two 1930 records, we see Agnes is reported as a Wichita, and her
mother as Mixed Blood and her fther as Caddo. The 1/4 then would mean her
mother was half white and half Wichita, her father fullblood Caddo. Thus
Agnes is half Caddo and 1/2 Wichita. The census appears to be reporting
percentage of Indian blood, but Agnes, who is 3/4 (1/4 Wichita and !/2 Caddo)
is reported as 1/4 blood. In some censuses, the percentage of WHITE blood was
reported, so maybe the enumerator got confused.

In the 1940 census, the enumerator wrote Verbena's name as Berbena.
