In 1880, she is Lucy B, indicating she was Lucy Bell (Belle). Some genealogies have her name as Louise Bell Conrad. Lucy was apparently a nickname for Louise. In the 1870 census, Lucy & her siblings' last name is Winter. Besides genealogies, her death certificate reports the name of her father as Fitzpatrick. Genealogies (with no documentation) give his name as Granville Kirkpatrick. However, a Tennessee marriage record for Granville Fitzpatrick and Ellen Bradley seem to match the family. Genealogies giving the name as Fitzpatrick even attach the Fiotzpatrick records. These two names are often confused by people, but the record seems so full and so consistent, lacking any other records to the contrary, Fitzpatrick it is. These facts all present a picture of the first marriage and family of the Helen Winter we see as the wife of Stephen Winter in 1870. It is not clear if the Fitzpatrick children were formally adopted or the enumerator just gave them Stephen's name in the census. Some genealogies report her birth state as Tennessee in 1870, but in 1880 it was Arkansas, like her sister Susan's report in 1870. 1870 Federal Census, Grayson County, Texas, 19 November, Precinct 3, PO Whitesboro, page 40, Hse Fam #278, Fam #283 Winter, Stephen Head F W 50 Farmer $3000 Real Estate $500 Personal b Tennessee [b abt 1820] Winter, Ellen 45 F W Keeping House b Alabama [b abt 1825] Winter, Susan 23 F W born Arkansas [b abt 1847] Winter, Elizabeth 21 F W 8 born Tennessee [b abt 1849] Winter, Thomas 20 M W born Mississippi Attended School [b abt 1850] Winter, John 16 M W born Mississippi Attended School [b abt 1854] Winter, Bell F W 15 born Tennessee Attended School [b abt 1855] Winter, Amelia F W 13 born Tennessee Attended School [b abt 1857] Her marriage record has her name as Lucy Belle Fitzpatrick. This Butler line in Ireland started with the Fitzwalter family in England. The following notes describe when the Butlerage if Ireland began: "Theobald Walter was the first of the family to migrate to Ireland where, by 1185, he had been created Chief Butler." -- http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2738450&id=I76626 I find in most sources the earlier Theobalds, usually Walter and the first Butler, are listed with this spelling, and usually with the third Theobald, the spelling becomes Theobold. I have known the name previously from Germanic sources as Theobold. I have kept the two spellings for the different generations, following the majority of sources reporting these families.
