Notes for Greg A FRANK

Greg was the son of Truman Andrew Frank and Dolores Bess Christiansen. One
genealogy reports Greg with birth and death information, but cites no records.
The place of birth matches his father's Truman's Idaho place of birth, and
later in life he and his wife were living in Meridian, Idaho, reported in this
genealogy as Greg's place of death. The date of birth reported here matches
his date of birth we have found in public records.

Notes for Truman Andrew FRANK

Dolores Bess Christiansen Frank gives information on her children in her letter
to her great-grandfather Joseph Asa Jenkins. In a photo taken 1 Feb 1957,
ages of the oldest child, Andrea Rose Frank, is given as age 9. I have
estimated time of marriage by adding a year to that age, allowing for about 10
years for marriage, depending on date of marriage and date of birth of Andrea.
Later records and references were found also on these children.

Obituary
TRUMAN FRANK

Former longtime Alaska resident Truman Andrew Frank, 70, died Jan. 14 in Bend,
Oregon

A service was held Jan. 18 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in
Bend.

Mr. Frank was born Aug. 13, 1921, inWeiser, Idaho, to Andrew Frank and Daisy
Ritzuis Frank.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Alaska for
a time. He later served with Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines.

Mr. Frank married Dolores B. Christiansen Jan. 8, 1953, in Winnemucca, Nev.
Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake City,
Utah. They raised three children.

After their own children were grown, he and his wife were foster parents to
about three dozen Eskimo children.

For the most part, Mr. Frank lived in Alaska, a state that was dear to his
heart, said a family member.

He worked in sales and managed jewelry stores, manufactured gold-nugget
jewelry and mined gold for several years.

Mr. Frank worked in radio advertising for KFQD Radio for many years. At the
same time, he was affiliated with the Alaska Sled Dog Association. He and his
wife lived and raised registered Siberian huskies on their homestead, at what
is now the University Center. He also raced dogs in local events.

In the '50s, Mr. Frank sold vehicles for Alaska Sales and Service. He did a
great deal of oil painting, and taught painting to others in both Anchorage
and Bend.

His family made this statement: "He was very artistic. He was known for his
cheerful, sweet disposition and will be greatly missed by his friends and
family. He was one of America's last true gentlemen."

Mr. Frank is survived by his wife, Dolores, of Bend; his daughter, Andrea of
Texas; his sons, Greg of Phoenix, Ariz., and Michael of Anchorage; and five
grandchildren.

Notes for Easom FRANKLIN

"My grandmother always had said that there was Cherokee Indian in her line. We
have never been able to prove that. However as I research the Franklin line I
hear many references to that same mystery. Easom and Luvina Forrester are
parents of Esom Franklin (1817) who married Susan Collier. Their daughter
Mariah Franklin (1850) married John Baptiste Dorway who is my Great
Grandfather. My grandmother Violet Dorway was the one who always told us that
she was part Cherokee."

Notes for Ephriam FRANKLIN

"Surnames Franklin. Sizemore, Dees. My ggreatgrandfather was brother to Esom
Franklin, son of Ephriam and Nancy Franklin"
-- Barbara Cook, Comment on an Ancestry Discussion Group, 26 January 2012

"You do know Gardner Green owned land next to Isshom [Isham or Issom]
Franklin, found on the Internet one time but can't find it now. Did I tell
you on my kin's Guion Miller application, she listed my Thomas Franklin born
around 1780 as dark complected, coarse black hair. She is the only one that
had seen Thomas Jefferson Franklin. I believe Ephriam [sic] Franklin and
Nancy were his parents. I have Ephriam Franklin's estate papers, and he names
Thomas Bartley Henry and James Sizemore as heirs. James was married to
Patience Franklin."
-- Barbara Cook, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 4 February 2012

---------------------------
I think eventually it wasn't accepted so much that the whites live amongst the
Indians and the half breeds and I believe they were forced south of the Black
River Swamp. And I think they were eventually forced off their land even more
East into Halifax County Va.

This is where we find people on the tax rolls listed as Indian such as William
Riddell. He's enumerated right next to John Green and Gardner Green. The
Sizemores also had legal issues with the government for adultery. My theory
is they didn't get married in the eyes of the Christian Church but in their
own native traditions. Prior to the Revolutionary War many of the Sizemores
and Greens were losing their land and being hung.

One Thomas Green was hauled away for execution. Supposedly Tory Ned Sizemore
was also hung. Oral tradition states that his name was Chief Golden Hawk.
Being hung and forced off their land, the Greens and Sizemores fled South,
first into the muddy water region of North Carolina. A few years later
they're found in the 96th district of South Carolina, Cherokee territory.

This is where I believe Gardner Green married the daughter of Chief
Doublehead. Nancy Doublehead aka Alnenee Talliutsuve. Gardner Green shows up
as a lieutenant in the revolutionary war fighting for Britain. As many
Indians did side with Britain. I find some Indians fighting under him such as
Edward Vann, Joseph Vann and Martin Cloud.

These Vanns are very well documented and their home is a museum in Georgia.
There are also several other families connected to my Greens that migrated
down to Indian Territory that fought under Gardner Green. We can take a look
at what was going on in history at that time such as assimilation of Indians
or exclusion of Indians, in order to gather the true facts.

For instance if one was Indian and living next to a white they were listed as
white. If they live next door to blacks they were listed as blacks. This
happened with my family for several generations. They tried to sue the
government for millions of dollars for not allowing them to enroll with the
tribe. The government denied their claims not based on their lack of Indian
blood but on their lack of continued enrollment for several generations.

Mysteriously almost all of the documentation from file 976 that my family
filed with the US government has disappeared. Over 200 applications filed by
my family claiming relations to Gardner Green and Essam [Issom?] Franklin
gone. Gardener Green and Issom Franklin were neighbors in SC.

and Sizemore’s.  I believe they came out of the Northern Neck of Virginia;
Bristol Parish. My Green/Franklin family had over 200 NA applications filed
with the Guion Miller. All Denied. The Sizemore’s had over 2000
applications filed and most denied. Several got through Our families were
brought to court in Lunenburg VA for living in adultery. I believe they were
at one time Nottoway Indian and ruled by the Pamunkey 'Queen Betty.' ...

Chapter VI
The Cherokees

The first that we hear of the Cherokees, after the Spanish invasion, is their
connection with the early British settlers of Virginia. A powerful and
extensive nation, they even had settlements upon the Appomattox river, and
were allied by blood with the Powhattan tribe.

1623: The Virginians [ENGLISHMEN] drove them from that place, and they
retreated to the head of the Holston river. Here, making temporary
settlements, the Northern Indians compelled them to retire to the Little
Tennessee river, where they established themselves permanently.

About the same time, a large branch of the Cherokees came from the territory
of South Carolina, near Charleston, and formed towns upon the main Tennessee,
extending as far as the Muscle Shoals. [editor's note: These were lower, or
"Chickamauga" Cherokees.] They found all that region unoccupied, except upon
the Cumberland, where resided a roving band of Shawnees. But the whole country
bore evidence of once having sustained a large Indian population.

Notes for Lucretia FRANKLIN

"Isom Franklin is living in Greenville SC in the late 1700's. His land is well
into Cherokee territory, and is associated with Henry Sizemore, Meschack
Green, Gardner Green, Thomas Franklin, and Ephraim Franklin. I believe Isom's
daughter to be Lucretia Franklin that married Meshack Green." (Troy Sims is a
genealogical researcher on the Green familiy line among the various Native
American tribes of Virginia and the Caroinas, and a descendant of Meshack W
Green and Lucretia Franklin of Pendleton District, South Carolina.)
-- Troy Sims, Ancestry Discussion Group, 22 September 2011

The early Ancestry One World Tree (requires Ancestry.com subscription)
represents several genealogies with various information on Lucretia and her
family.

One Ancestry Trees, compiled by Jess Headley, reports on the parents of John
Green.

John Green b 1784
Father Meshack GREEN b: 1720
Mother Lucretia FRANKLIN b: ABT 1755
-- Jess Headley,
http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2716375&id=I26870

Different sources associate Lucretia's birth with either Guilford County,
North Carolina, or Pendleton/Anderson County, South Carolina. Anderson County
was one of the counties formed out of the old, larger Pendleton District, but
not until 1826. Pendleton District would be the place of birth, as well as the
place of death.

I found a reference to a Lucretia Franklin born in 1750 in the American
Genealogical-Biographical Index that is close to the other reports of
Lucretia's birth date. But this appears to come from a source in Boston.
This might indicate that Lucretia, or her family, originally came from Boston.
The birth place is not given in this information. This source reports other
Franklins as born in South Carolina.

American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI)
Lucretia Franklin
Birth Date 1750
Reference: Genealogical Column of the " Boston Transcript" 1906-1941. (The
greatest single source of material for genealogical data for the N.E. area and
for the period 1600-1800. Completely indexed in the Index): 10 Dec 1924, 2492;
13 Apr 1925, 2900, Volume 58, Page 46

In the will of Meshack W Green, written 19 March 1798 and probated 24 January
1799, the transcription spells his wife's name as Creory. This could be a
misreading of the name (nickname) Creasy on the handwritten marriage
certificate. No marriage date is given there, but birth places of the two are
Meshack SC and Creasy (with no last name) NC. This marriage certificate also
gives a nickname or alternate name for Creory as Cressa. These are all
obvious nickname short forms of Lucretia.

Various sources have quite varying dates of birth for Lucretia Franklin, wife
of Meshack Green. Ranges vary from 1706-1775! Though the name is the same,
the information obviously represents two or three generations of persons.
Some sources indicate Creasy was Cherokee or part Cherokee. Details are hard
to get. Substantial reference is also found to the claim that Meshack Green
was Cherokee or part Cherokee. Green is a big name among Eastern Cherokees, I
am told. There is indication of some connection to the Gardner Green line in
Indiana.

A descendant, Sheri Horton, contributed these family comments:
"Regarding Meshack Greene m Creasy (Franklin ?) Daughter Nancy Anne Greene
married Jonathan Horton son of Abraham and Martha Brissels Horton. Jonathan
of Quaker faith was excommunicated from the church for marrying out of the
faith leading me to believe that my gggggrandmother Nancy Anne Greene was of
Cherokee descent. Jonathan and Nancy's son John married Susan Grider and the
family moved to Washington Co Mo. John, a soldier in war of 1812, had a land
grant. The family remains in the Washington and surrounding counties."
-- Sheri Horton, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 19 October 2010

Sheri continued working along various lines for more information about the
Cherokee connection. In May 2014, I got a note from Sheri celebrating her
discovery of finding documentary evidence of Meshack and his wife being
fullblood Cherokee.

"I just got my card from the Northern Cherokee Nation for proving John Horton,
wife Nancy Anne Green daughter of Meshack Green(e) . I found therm on the
Emigration rolls of 1817-1835 That Meshack, Creasy, and Nancy Anne were full
Cherokee! Happy Happy Happy Dance !!!!! They are recognised by the state of
Missouri and are working on Federal recognition."
-- Sheri Horton, Ancestry Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 May 2014

Thanks to Keith Henderson of Alabama for finding Meshack's will. His
information come to me from a distant cousin, Glenda Pool, through another
cousin Butch Mixon, both working on this and related family lines.

A A Smith adds some detail and corrects the transcription of John Cadwell's
name from her copy of the original handwritten will.

"Meshack Green's will: Meshack Green gave land to John Cadwell, not Caldwell
in Pend. Dist. SC. My John Cadwell was living there in 1800 close to Creasy
Green. John and his wife, Mary, moved to Christian Co. KY in 1806 (tax list).
John and Mary had children: William, b 1790 NC, Daniel, b 1794 NC, Moses, b
1796 NC, John G., b 1800 SC, Nancy, b 1802 SC, Chloe, b 1804 SC, Sally, b
1806, Jane, b 1808. Their daughter, Nancy Cadwell, married John Kesterson in
Christian Co. KY in 1819. They had a son, Harvey W. Kesterson, who married
Charlotte Casteel in Pike Co. IL. They were living in the Cherokee Nation in
1860. We believe there was Indian blood in both the Cadwell and Kesterson
families. Kestersons were from Northumberland Co. VA to Fauquier Co. VA to
Green Co. TN to Christian/Caldwell Co. KY to Pike Co. IL. I just wonder if
Mary was a Green (John Cadwell's wife)."
-- A A Smith ( aasmith589), Comment on Ancestry.com, 4 July 2014

Dates provided by Glenda Pool and some other genealogies are too late to
account for the reported birth dates of some of the children. There is a
great discrepancy in reported dates of birth and marriage for Meshack and
Lucretia Green. I have rationalized and adjusted the dates showing in my
genealogy to some extent, based on analysis of the conflicting sources I have
found.

None of these sources have parents for either Meshack or Lucretia. Some of
these state that one or both of them are full-blood Cherokees. One source
states that one of their sons is a full-blood Cherokee (but lacks full
information on all the children), which would mean they both had to be
full-blood.

But few of these genealogies provide full sourcing information, which makes
them generally unreliable. The internal consistency and amount of total
detail then becomes a major factor in determining possibilities. Why can't
people tell you where they get their information?

Notes for Mariah FRANKLIN

"My grandmother always had said that there was Cherokee Indian in her line. We
have never been able to prove that. However as I research the Franklin line I
hear many references to that same mystery. Easom and Luvina Forrester are
parents of Esom Franklin (1817) who married Susan Collier. Their daughter
Mariah Franklin (1850) married John Baptiste Dorway who is my Great
Grandfather. My grandmother Violet Dorway was the one who always told us that
she was part Cherokee."

An earlier memorial was posted right after her death and cremation, but it
reported only the cremation. This memorial was created soon after her death,
so did not report on the burial, which was planned later as a joint burial
ceremony for the ashes of both Jane and her husband Johnny Mack, who had died
erlier that year. This memorial included her whole obituary and gives her
full name.
